Barn som far illa i det tysta : En kvalitativ studie om barns uppväxt i sekter samt hur skola och socialtjänst uppmärksammar och arbetar med dessa barn / Children who suffer in silence : A qualitative study of children's upbringing in cults and how school and social services pay attention to and work with these childrenLjungmark, Stella, Svensson, Hanna January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the meeting between children in cults and personnel in Swedish schools and Child Protective Services (CPS). Furthermore, the study investigates whether children in cults who are being mistreated receive the help and attention they need from school and the CPS. This study has a qualitative research approach. Five semi-structured interviews with former cult members and professionals who have worked with children in cults were conducted. The interviews were supplemented with a content analysis of two autobiographies written by former cult members. The theory chosen was the general systems theory with the aim to use it as a tool to further understand how cults work as a system and how it affects the children in them. The results show that children who live in cults can be exposed to physical and mental abuse. Furthermore, it is difficult for professionals to identify children that have experienced abuse, due to the cults view of and approach to people outside their own community. Lack of knowledge regarding how to recognize these children in cults that have experienced abuse and non-existent training in how to handle said cases is one reason for why many children have been overlooked.

If you take my children I will kill you” : A qualitative study about social service workers' experience of threats and violence from clientsKarlsson, Moa, Eriksson, Rebecca January 2021 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how social workers experience and understand threats and violence aimed towards them in their profession as well as what factors increase and decrease their motivation to report threats and violence from clients in order to conspire to a better work environment for social workers. Method: The empirical material of this study was collected through semi-structured interviews with six social workers within child protective service in Sweden. Theory: The theories used to analyze the empirical material has been Berger and Luckmanns theory about social construction and Lundgrens theory about the normalization process. Results: The results showed that all six social workers had experienced threats or violence from clients at some point. Our results also indicate that social workers normalize threats and violence from their clients. The normalization may be a result of the mentality that threats and violence is a part of the job which is present among social workers. Another finding was that the social workers propensity to report threats or violence depended on the relationship to the client. If they had a long and good relationship the propensity to report decreased.

Among children and youth who have been maltreated, several studies point to the elevated risk of developmental problems such as delinquency and justice system involvement. Presenting serious behavioral problems is a sufficient condition to receive child protection services (CPS) in the province of Quebec; this offers the opportunity to focus on this condition and on the role it may play or not in the subsequent risk of Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) involvement. The primary role of CPS is to end an abusive situation and to prevent its recurrence. However, a better understanding of the risk factors that lead to an YCJA involvement would help to identify and to adapt interventions for those at greatest risk of juvenile delinquency. The aim of this study is to describe the risk of an YCJA event after a first intervention of CPS due to behavioral problems, and to determine the individual and intervention related factors associated with this YCJA involvement. Administrative data from 16 youth centers in the province of Quebec has been used. Thus, all children and adolescents who have had their file closed after a first CPS intervention due to behavioral problems between January 1st 2005 and December, 31st 2009 were observed (N = 6,630). Survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier model) and Cox regression analyzes were performed. The results indicate that youths in the sample present a 39.7% overall risk of YCJA involvement within the 5-year follow-up period. Boys present a higher risk of YCJA involvement than girls, an unsurprising result. It also appears that the risk varies by gender and the presence of co-occurrence of maltreatment at initial report. Individual risk factors seem to have a greater impact on YCJA involvement than those associated with the CPS intervention. Moreover, recurrences of CPS due to behavioral problems but also because of new information related to child’s maltreatment are particularly important since they are strongly associated with future YCJA involvement. Implications for theory, research, and practice are discussed.

Možnosti využití úkolově orientovaného přístupu v praxi OSPOD / Application possibilities of a task centred aprroach in the department of social and legal protection of children practiceSedláková, Eliška January 2019 (has links)
140 Abstract GOALS: Intention of my diessertation work was to answer the main research question: "What is the utilazation rate of TCA when working with involuntary clients of social workers from CPS in the capital city of Prague and selected CPS in Vysocina region?". Theoretical starting-points: Basic signs of TCA are partnerships and strenghten. In terms of TCA the success depends on How people can actively participate and understand the process of helping. Clients role is active and he is participating everything what has been happening in the whole process of helping. Task centered approach says, that experience from your own decision is more usefull then just assuming how the future situation could be. TCA holds the idea, which just a little success build up self-confidence and self-esteem. Accomplishing of goals and achieving of another goal motivates a client. When smaller goals are set up there is a much more chance for possitive result of the whole advisory process. METHODS: Semistructured questionnaire has been used. The questionnaire have 47 questions, which are based on operationalization of main research question. RESULTS: The outcome of questionnaire investigation method is that the workers don`t use TCA, but in general in their practice we are able to identify some of the elements of approach.

Discursos normativos e de profissionais da rede de proteção à infância: o trabalho intersetorial contra a violência em uma região de São Paulo - SP / Normative and professional\'s discourses of the child protection network: intersectoral work against violence in a region of Sao Paulo - SPPeretti, Andrezza Gomes 09 March 2018 (has links)
The knowledge that every child is a subject of rights is historically recent in Brazil. The current paradigm, based on human rights, advocates the end of exploitation and any other type of abuse in this stage of life. However, the phenomena still occurs and its lead to short or long term consequences, and is one of the risk factors associated to cognitive, linguistic, affective and academic problems. The coping to that question in Brazil is established from many institutions that are part of a child abuse network protection, as it is recommended since 1990 by Child and Adolescent Statute (Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente) and better organized in 2006 by the Rights Guarantee System (Sistema de Garantia de Direitos), that seeks a work considered intersectoral. Nevertheless, the literature points some failure in the communication of its components. Understand how the network works and to what extent it makes up an intersectoral work is important to reflect about its dynamic and possibilities. Therefore, the objective of this research is to understand the composition and operation of the Protection Network. In order to carry out the research, we used two sources of information: 1) standards, orientation and guidelines for professionals in large areas that are part of the protection network, separating them by the following sectors: Human Rights, Justice and Public Security, Health, Education and Social Assistance; and 2) semi-structured interviews with professionals who work in these sectors and acts in the same region in the southern part of Sao Paulo city. The material was analysed by qualitative methods using discursive analysis to understand how the articulation of the different spheres of child protection emerges as a device for coping with violence against children. We note that there are some differences between the attributions expected by each sector and there is a greater flexibility of the service flows in the professionals\' discourses when compared to normative discourses. Regarding the notifications of violence, we highlight challenges to its occurrence related to the lack of capacity of professionals to deal with the issue, insecurity to notify and still lack of trust in the Tutelary Council. Concerning this institution, we observe a lack of legitimacy regarding the effectiveness of its actions, becoming only a necessary institution for the Protective Network because the rules and laws so determine. Regarding the functioning of the network, we note that although the documents affirm their importance, conceptualize violence in a homogeneous way and define guidelines to be taken, the network works in a still fragile way, as evidenced by the professionals\' discourses. In order to build an intersectoral policy, it is necessary to standardize the flow of attendance, the information and notification systems of violence, and to empower professionals for this process. Promising strategies for building intersectoral service plans in the region are concentrated audience and other similar meetings. The institutionalization of these mechanisms could facilitate greater articulation between sectors

African American Women's Perceptions of and Experiences with Mandated Substance Abuse Treatment: Implications for CounselorsNewton, Kathryn 16 May 2008 (has links)
African American women, in particular those who are economically marginalized, are disproportionately subject to surveillance by social service and criminal justice agencies (James et al., 2003) and are vulnerable to race- and gender-biased policy implementation (Chibnall et al., 2003; Zerai, 2002). They also experience population-specific personal (Ehrmin, 2001, 2002), social (Riehman, Iguchi, Zeller, & Morral, 2003; MacMaster, 2005), and economic barriers (Tighe & Saxe, 2006) to accessing and entering substance abuse treatment services. These factors contribute to lower rates of treatment entry follow-through (Siqueland et al., 2002) and higher drop-out rates (Scott-Lennox, Rose, Bohlig, & Lennox, 2000) than women from other racial and ethnic groups. This qualitative study explored African American women’s perceptions of mandated referral to substance abuse treatment and the impact of those perceptions on their treatment entry. The sample included 17 women age 18 years and over who were currently enrolled at three gender-specific treatment programs (one intensive outpatient and two residential) in a major southeastern urban area. This naturalistic inquiry (Lincoln and Guba, 1987) was informed by Black feminist epistemology (Collins, 2000) in accordance with recommendations for culturally sensitive research with women of color (Landrine, Klonoff, & Brown-Collins, 1995). Participants completed one-time, in-depth (one to two hour) interviews in which they were invited to explore their experiences with mandated substance abuse treatment referrals from state agencies (child protective services and the criminal justice system). Results indicate that participants generally perceived the treatment mandate as helpful. However, they also indicated that their willingness and ability to follow-through with treatment entry were influenced by multidimensional (Marlowe, Merikle, Kirby, Festinger, & McLellan, 2001) and interacting factors. Participants identified influence factors that included intra- and interpersonal concerns, the quality of interactions with state agencies, and treatment-specific issues. Results are presented along with suggestions for counselors and future research.
