Youth, aspiration, and mobility : young people debating their potential futures in Nepal

Kolbel, Andrea January 2015 (has links)
This study is centrally concerned with young people's capacity to identify and realise promising educational and occupational pathways. Whilst it is now well established among social scientists that young people have agency, much less is known about what types of agency young people might demonstrate. Based on field research conducted in 2011-2012 with a group of young people studying, working, and living in Nepal's capital city, Kathmandu, the present study scrutinises Western-inspired approaches prevalent in the scholarship on youth which equate agency to resistance and individuality. It does so, by bringing the literature on youth agency into conversation with theoretical work on the concepts of aspiration and mobility. Through an in-depth analysis of young people's time-space-strategies, the thesis contributes to existing literature in three ways: First, it shows that young people may grow in power as they learn to fulfil social obligations and foster stronger relationships with other people. Second, it illustrates that young people's agency may not only take the form of observable practices, but may also reside in young people’s active efforts to think through their options for improving their own and other people's situation. Third, it highlights the importance of young people's spatial mobilities and immobilities in negotiating various social pressures and in developing a sense of themselves as competent, educated, and successful people. The findings of this thesis are, therefore, of relevance to the interdisciplinary field of youth studies as well as to emerging debates in geography about the apparent need to produce 'aspirational citizens' and about the meanings attached to spatial (im)mobility in contemporary societies.

Lezení u dětí a mládeže: akutní fyziologická odezva a využití lezení pro rozvoj síly na příkladu horních končetin / Climbing in children and youth: acute physiological responses to climbing and their implications for upper body strength.

Zozul'áková, Michaela January 2019 (has links)
Title: Climbing in children and youth: acute physiological responses to climbing and their implications for upper body strength. Objectives: The aim of this thesis was to determine the physiological responses of children and youth to climbing and its implications for upper body strength. Methods: One hundred and twelve children (aged 9,8 ± 1,4 years) participated across two studies. Study one (91 children) explored the effects of climbing on upper body strength, with the aid of a battery of climbing specific tests (bent arm hang on the trapeze, finger hang on the wooden bar and maximal hand grip with the manual dynamometer). These tests were designed for the measurement of the key muscle groups involved in climbing. Study two (21 children) assessed acute physiological response to climbing using the indirect calorimetry method. Energy expenditure was used as an indicator of the climbing skills and to express the total climbing work completed. Study two lasted for 16 weeks, during this time the children underwent three measurements. Instructors recorded the routes climbed and their difficulty during each session. The period of the study corresponded with the duration of the climbing course for children during the school year. The results of the acute physiological response of children during climbing...

Att stödja barn och ungdomar med psykisk ohälsa : En kvalitativ intervjustudie med skolsköterskor i särskilt utsatta-, utsatta- och riskområden.

Ånmo Sandqvist, Hanna, Fagerstrand, Emma January 2021 (has links)
Fagerstrand, E & Ånmo Sandqvist, H. To support children and youth with mental illness. An qualitative interview study with school nurse professionals in disadvantaged areas. Degree project in pediatric nursing 15 credits. Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Care Science, 2021.  Background: Mental illness among children and youth is increasing in Sweden. At the same time, the social gaps are widening and more and more children and youths are living in disadvantaged areas. It has been established that socio-economic vulnerability is a risk factor for mental illness. The school nurse has a key role in identifying and preventing mental illness at an early stage. Aim: The aim of the study was to shed light on school nurses' experience of supporting children and youth with mental illness in advantaged areas. Method: This was a qualitative study with an inductive approach where data were collected via semi-structured interviews with eight school nurses. The analysis was conducted with content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in two overarching themes and five categories. The results highlighted that the school nurses' work required a great deal of personal commitment, such as seeing that there was a connection between the social context and mental health. This study highlighted that a well-functioning collaboration was a success factor and that the school nurses used personal relationship building as a tool to counteract mental illness. Conclusion: In order for the school nurse to be able to identify symptoms of mental illness and possible risk factors at an early stage, as well as initiate preventive and health-promoting measures, time, capacity and conditions must be provided. A major risk factor for mental illness among children and youth in disadvantaged areas is the socio-economic vulnerability, which is reflected in the results of this study, so school nurses in these areas bear a great responsibility for health promotion work in schools.    Keywords: Children and youth, Disadvantaged areas, Mental illness, School nurses, Student health. / Fagerstrand, E & Ånmo Sandqvist, H. Att stödja barn och ungdomar med psykisk ohälsa. En kvalitativ intervjustudie med skolsköterskor i särskilt utsatta-, utsatta- och riskområden. Examensarbete i pediatrisk omvårdnad 15 högskolepoäng.

Characterizing the Indoor Air Environment In the Homes of First Nation Children and Youth Using Remote Community-Based Research Methods: Household Conditions, Air Quality, and Preliminary Health Outcomes

Ng Cheng Hin, Rhiannon 18 January 2023 (has links)
Indoor air quality is a critical determinant of physical and mental health. Despite evidence linking poor indoor air quality to adverse health outcomes, this issue is understudied in the context of First Nations children and youth health and wellbeing. The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize indoor air quality, housing conditions, and respiratory health of children living in the Kanesatake First Nation and (2) evaluate the feasibility of using remote community-based participatory methods in the context of First Nations health research. Community-assisted data collection occurred between June 2021 and February 2022 in the Kanesatake First Nation, Quebec. Indoor air data were collected from 31 randomly selected houses. Results showed elevated levels of contaminants, including particulate matter, benzene, toluene, and xylene, compared to the Canadian averages. Houses generally lacked adequate ventilation, and over one-quarter were reported to be in need of major repairs. We developed instruction tools for air sampling and house inspection to facilitate off-site data collection. High rates of participant completion (95%) and low attrition rates (5%) indicated the feasibility of remote community-based participatory research methods. Lessons learnt are summarized and important recommendations are made for adaptation to improve future data collection. This research served as a pilot project for a multi-year, cross-Nation study, as well as the first study to evaluate the indoor air environment in the Kanesatake First Nation.

The Impact Of Homelessness And Remaining In School Of Origin On The Academic Achievement Of Fourth Through Eighth Grade Students In Brevard County Public Schools

Dunkel, Richard 01 January 2012 (has links)
This study examined the impact of homelessness and the ability of homeless students to remain in their school of origin on the academic achievement of fourth through eighth grade students in Brevard County, Florida. To determine effects of homelessness, homeless students were compared to non-homeless students who qualified for free lunch utilizing developmental scale scores and learning gains from 2011 FCAT Reading and Mathematics. To determine effects of remaining in school of origin, homeless students who changed schools were compared to homeless students who did not change schools utilizing the same assessment data. Independent t-tests and chi-square tests of association were used with .05 significance levels. Findings showed that homeless and non-homeless students had no significant differences in reading scores, and homeless students had significantly higher mathematics scores. However, significantly fewer homeless students made an annual learning gain in reading and math learning gains were statistically equal. Remaining in school of origin also had no significant impact on reading and math developmental scale scores, but a significantly lower percentage of homeless students who changed schools made annual learning gains in reading and mathematics. These results led the researcher to develop a theory called the Weighted Saddle Effect, caused by homeless mobility, to describe the difficulty homeless students had in making annual learning gains commensurate with their developmental scale scores. Recommendations for policy included school districts ensuring transportation to school of origin was available for all homeless students as mandated by the McKinney-Vento Act

A descriptive study of Hmong youth gang members in the California Central Valley

Xiong, Mai 01 January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
This study investigated the perceptions of Hmong youth gang members and professional workers related to the following research questions: How does a Hmong youth become a gang member? Why are Hmong youth involved in gangs? What are the benefits of being in a gang? What are the activities that Hmong youths do in a gang? How does a gang member get out of the gang? An open-ended survey questionnaire was used for the Hmong youth gang members. A standardized open-ended interview approach was used for the professional workers. Twenty-eight youth gang members and ten professional workers participated in this study. The data collected from this study were analyzed using description, classification, and interpretation techniques. The findings show that a Hmong youth can become a gang member by forming a gang, jumping in (being beaten), or committing a criminal activity. It was found that the youth gang members joined the gang for a variety of reasons, such as having siblings or friends who were in the gang, intimidation, discrimination, fun and excitement, family problems, or school problems. The most frequently stated reasons were gang friends and intimidation. The findings show that the gang provides the gang member friendship, social bonding, belonging, economic gain, respect, support, protection, fun and excitement. The activities that the youth gang members engage in include smoking, drinking, partying, dealing drugs, stealing, fighting, drive-by shootings, and home invasions. The study indicates that jumping out (being beaten), moving away, or getting married are the different ways that a Hmong youth gang member can get out of the gang.
