Investigation of an aeroelastic model for a generic wing structure

Cilliers, M. E. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Computational Aeroelasticity is a complex research field which combines structural and aerodynamic analyses to describe a vehicle in flight. This thesis investigates the feasibility of including such an analysis in the development of control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles within the Electronic Systems Laboratory at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University. This is done through the development of a structural analysis algorithm using the Finite Element Method, an aerodynamic algorithm for Prandtl’s Lifting Line Theory and experimental work. The experimental work was conducted at the Low-Speed Wind Tunnel at the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. The structural algorithm was applied to 20-noded hexahedral elements in a winglike structure. The wing was modelled as a cantilever beam, with a fixed and a free end. Natural frequencies and deflections were verified with the experimental model and commercial software. The aerodynamic algorithm was applied to a Clark-Y airfoil with a chord of 0:1m and a half-span of 0:5m. This profile was also used on the experimental model. Experimental data was captured using single axis accelerometers. All postprocessing of data is also discussed in this thesis. Results show good correlation between the structural algorithm and experimental data.

To this end, we will analyze the procedures suggested by the artists Lygia Clark and Pina Bausch. The artwork as a device that causes the spectator's perception and action is the core of this research. The phenomenon of art in this context occurs in the relationship between subject, object and space. All of them happening at the same time. Public and artwork as an unique landscape. They are not separated, but constitute each other. The place of the spectator also becomes the place of the artwork. This work is built on references that addresses the experience as an event that encourages participation from the spectator trough approaches, questions and revelations. These movements coincide with the displacement of the gaze and the transformation of meanings imposed. The proposals and reflections suggested by the artists provide material for speculation of art and contemporary theatrical environment as a growing field - a place that pushes the boundaries of languages and is legitimated as a field of experience seeking a cannibalistic look, look which observes and absorbs the world as the first time / Esta dissertação tem como objetivo investigar processos de produção da arte contemporânea que se fundamentam em princípios de interação e experiência estética.

Numerical Analysis on the Effects of Blade Loading on Vortex Shedding and Boundary Layer Behavior in a Transonic Axial Compressor

Clark, Kenneth Phillip 14 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Multiple high-fidelity, time-accurate computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the effects of upstream stator loading and rotor shock strength on vortex shedding characteristics in a single stage transonic compressor. Various configurations of a transonic axial compressor stage, including three stator/rotor axial spacings of close, mid, and far in conjunction with three stator loadings of decreased, nominal, and increased were simulated in order to understand the flow physics of transonic blade-row interactions. Low-speed compressors typically have reduced stator/rotor axial spacing in order to decrease engine weight, and also because there is an increase in efficiency with reduced axial spacing. The presence of a rotor bow shock in high-speed compressors causes additional losses as the shock interacts with the upstream stator trailing edge. This research analyzes the strength of shock-induced vortices due to these unsteady blade-row interactions. The time-accurate URANS code, TURBO, was used to generate periodic, quarter annulus simulations of the Blade Row Interaction compressor rig. Both time-averaged and time-accurate results compare well with experimentally-observed trends. It was observed that vortex shedding was synchronized to the passing of a rotor bow shock. Normal and large shock-induced vortices formed on the stator trailing edge immediately after the shock passing, but the large vortices were strengthened at the trailing edge due to a low-velocity region on the suction surface. This low velocity region was generated upstream of mid-chord on the suction surface from a shock-induced thickening of the boundary layer or separation bubble, due to the rotor bow shock reflecting off the stator trailing edge and propagating upstream. The circulation of the shock-induced vortices increased with shock strength (decreased axial spacing) and stator loading. Most design tools do not directly account for unsteady effects such as blade-row interactions, so a model is developed to help designers account for shock-induced vortex strength with varying shock strength and stator loading. An understanding of the unsteady interactions associated with blade loading and rotor shock strength in transonic stages will help compressor designers account for unsteady flow physics early in the design process.

Farias de Carvalho, Humberto 21 November 2022 (has links)
[EN] The aim of this doctoral research is to assert that the activity of the conservator of museological institutions is of great importance, emanating from a paradigm shift that places the conservator at the centre of discussions regarding decision-making on works of art belonging to the collections of these institutions. Starting from the presupposition that it is possible, by analogy, to compare the museum institution to an ecosystem, that is, as a larger system made up of several minor systems, it is intended to examine the relationships between conservators, acting within a specific subsystem, and various individuals acting within other subsystems. Museums, like other social fields, are spaces of social interaction in which hierarchical structures of power can generate conflicts between the individuals who participate in them. The acknowledgement of this exposes various problems that can affect works of art, from acquisition, through to conservation and storage and restoration itself, and even the exhibition of these works, amongst other things. As an alternative, it is proposed that the conservator must be recognised as a kind of manager, who seeks to react to the various problems related to the decision-making process for the benefit of the works of art. The hypothesis asserts that the conservator, as an individual possessing the power to operate as a political interlocutor at the interface between the various subsystems of the museum system, is the person best-placed to lead discussions and give opinions on the various aspects related to the objects that confer an identity upon the museum institution. Thus, the proposed paradigm shift can contribute to the balance of the museum ecosystem, to the benefit of all those who share working relationships there, in search of the common good. / Farias De Carvalho, H. The Novel on a New Scale : Considering the World in a Tree’s Lifetime Through Richard Powers’ The Overstory

Dahlmann, Carlotta January 2024 (has links)
This essay explores the different levels of scale used in Richard Powers’ novel The Overstory. The central thesis of this essay, “The Novel on a New Scale: Considering the World in a Tree’s Lifetime,” examines the different levels of scale, from the general concept to the particular scale of the novel as a medium, as well as the spatial and temporal scales of human and non-human entities in The Overstory. This exploration unfolds through four sections, each with its own sub-sections: Scale, History to Fiction, The Character and the Decentering of the Human, and the Temporal Scale.            By examining how The Overstory tackles the challenges of operating on multiple scales to provide an authentic narrative, this essay contributes to the emerging field of Anthropocene fiction. It further emphasizes the need to acknowledge multiple scales both as authors and readers, as they inherit the power to shift perspectives. Richard Powers is a novelist who successfully brings the natural world closer to his readers while truthfully addressing the critical issues of climate change and deforestation.

Modélisation financière avec des processus de Volterra et applications aux options, aux taux d'intérêt et aux risques de crédit / Financial modeling with Volterra Lévy processes and applications to options pricing, interest rates and credit risk modeling

Rahouli, Sami El 28 February 2014 (has links)
Finalement nous étudions la modélisation du risque de crédit / This work investigates financial models for option pricing, interest rates and credit risk with stochastic processes that have memory and discontinuities. These models are formulated in terms of the fractional Brownian motion, the fractional or filtered Lévy process (also doubly stochastic) and their approximations by semimartingales. Their stochastic calculus is treated in the sense of Malliavin and Itô formulas are derived. We characterize the risk-neutral probability measures in terms of these processes for options pricing models of Black-Scholes type with jumps. We also study models of interest rates, in particular the models of Vasicek, Cox-Ingersoll-Ross and Heath-Jarrow-Morton. Finally we study credit risk models
