The impact of storytelling on the social development of learners with Asperger's SyndromeSanders, Debbie Anne 30 June 2006 (has links)
This study investigates the nature of Asperger's Syndrome and specifically the social impairments experienced by learners affected by this syndrome. The incorrect social language, narrow interests and repetitive routines, and the deficits of theory of mind, central coherence and executive functioning of learners with Asperger's Syndrome are also outlined, and an attempt is made to relate these impairments to the social difficulties that learners with Asperger's Syndrome may experience in any inclusive setting.
Chapters two and three comprise an in-depth literature study on this specific subject, thus forming a basis for the empirical research reported in chapter five. A qualitative research design is used, first to gain information about and understanding of the nature of the social impairments that afflict learners with Asperger's Syndrome, and secondly to gauge the effectiveness of using social stories as a means to assist the social development of affected learners. More specifically, an ethnographic research design has been chosen for its flexibility which readily permits last-minute adjustments to suit any design, and also because it helps to give meaning to personal encounters. The sensitive nature of the topic is another important reason for choosing this approach (ie. interaction with the researcher could be "fine-tuned" to achieve the ends of this adapted interview situation effectively, circumspectly and safely without undue upset for all concerned).
The interview responses of two mothers of learners with Asperger's Syndrome, as well as the observation of these learners are reported. The results of the interviews and observations are checked against the literature study for corroboration in order to bring about a more positive awareness of the impairments experienced by these learners.
The technique of social stories was investigated as a method of enhancing the social development of learners with Asperger's Syndrome. Three specific social stories were developed for this research in order to test the effectiveness of this method. Positive outcomes were achieved after implementation of the stories.
Results of this study indicated that knowledge and understanding of Asperger's Syndrome, as well as positive attitudes, are critical to ensure the acceptance and accommodation of learners with Asperger's Syndrome in the school environment and in society as a whole. Also, the issue of accommodating learners with Asperger's Syndrome in an inclusive setting should receive concerted attention since it can have major implications for their educational prospects. / Educational Studies / Thesis (D. An investigation into the subjective well-being of the female stripperJansen, Renée Claudia 30 June 2008 (has links)
This study investigated the subjective well-being of female strippers. The effect that certain variables namely, self-esteem, general health, self-efficacy, perceived social support and sense of coherence had on subjective well-being and the independent components of subjective well-being, namely life satisfaction and positive and negative affect, were investigated. The sample consisted of 75 female strippers and was a consequence of a combination of purposive and convenience non-probability sampling. These women were employed at Teazers - a chain of strip clubs in Gauteng, South Africa. Information was gathered through self-reported questionnaires with quantifiable scales. The results of the regression models showed that life satisfaction depends on perceived social support, but positive and negative affect depends on self-esteem and general health. If life satisfaction and positive and negative affect is combined into a measurement of subjective well-being, 6.7% of the total variance in subjective well-being is uniquely explained by self-esteem. / The present research demonstrates the importance for the Brazilian justice system in adopting the Theory of Transcendence of Determining Motives in the decisions handed down by the Federal Supreme Court, in the concentrated control of Constitutionality and it happens from the articulation with the Law of the Animals and the analysis of Judged by the Magna Court on the protection of non-human animals. The final decisions of merit rendered by the Federal Supreme Court in the direct actions of unconstitutionality produce erga omnes and binding effects, removing from the legal system the normative act or law incompatible with the Constitution (article 102, § 2 of the CF). However, such effects cover only the sentence device. The STF declared the unconstitutionality of state law number. 15,299 / 2013, which regulated the activity of the "vaquejada" as sports practice and culture, but the objective limits of this statement were only binding on the State of Ceará, because the transcendental effects of this decision are not recognized. In the present case, the Fundamental Right to protect the environment (Article 225 of the Federal Constitution) overlaps with the cultural values of sporting activity, given the intrinsic cruelty applied to animals in the “vaquejada”. This plea was the determining factor for the merits of the case, but the Supreme Court has not been acknowledging the extent of the binding effect of its decisions on concentrated constitutionality control. It argues about the fragility of the configuration of the STF as a constitutional court due in particular to the varied matters of its competence and form of constitution. Beside these impasses, another problem appears, regarding Constitutional Amendment 96/2017, which added a new subsection to art. 225, paragraph 1, of the Federal Constitution, in the event that sporting practices that use animals are not considered cruel, provided that they are cultural manifestations. It demonstrated that the overcoming of legislation offends fundamental right, presenting itself as unconstitutional, due to the prescription contained in article 60, § 4, of the CF. It also examines the importance of consolidating of the judicial precedents micro-system established by the new Code of Civil Procedure, which provides a dialogue between the sources contained in the Civil Law, Common Law, Stare Decisis, indicating that the STF’ s application of Transcendence of the determinant motives can contribute and promote the consolidation of the principles of security and legal coherence, primacy of Fundamental Rights, in which Brazil is inserted.

Le couple en droit international privé : contribution à l’adaptation méthodologique du droit international privé du couple / The couple in international private law : contribution to the methodological evolution of private international law of the coupleEscudey, Gaëtan 01 December 2016 (has links)
The liberal influence in Family Law and the rise of individualist ideology have led to a multiplication of conjugal life forms and considerably increased the diversity of laws and methods applicable to couples in International Private Law. To analyse couples under International Private Law leads us to rethink the International Private Law of the Couple. Deconstructing this subject brings to light the current non-adaptation of the classic conflict of laws method and the insufficiency of the recognition approach. In fact, current International Private Law as it pertains to couples neither guarantees the international recognition of theconjugal bond nor ensures a coherent legal treatment of legal problems faced by international couples. It is therefore necessary to examine a possible methodological evolution of thesubject. This study aims to demonstrate that it is possible to adapt the classic conflict of lawsmethod by taking into account the objectives of the recognition approach whilst founding iton the lex auctoritas rule. This would not only bring better coherence to International Private Law of the Couple but it would also assure a real legal stability for international conjugal relationships.

Vad innebär hunden för våra brukare? : Personalens erfarenheter av djurassisterade insatser medhundar inom kommunal LSS-dagverksamhet i Dalarnas län. / What difference makes the dog to our users? : Staff perspective onanimal-assisted interventions with dogs in municipal day-care forpersons with autism and/or intellectual disabilities in Dalarna County.Zimmermann, Angélique January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to investigate how users are influenced by animal-assisted interventions with dogs in municipal day-care centres (developing centres or working places for persons with autism and/or intellectual disabilities) in Dalarna County. This is a qualitative study, initiated through a quantitative mapping concerning the presence of dogs or other animals in all municipal LSS day-care centres in Dalarna. Its limited to the staff perspective on the impact of dog-assisted interventions on the target group, and results are based on semistructured interviews with staff from all municipal day-care centres in Dalarna, where users are offered dog-assisted interventions. The results where analysed through previous research, KASAM and social responsiveness. They show that the dog-assisted interventions promote mental/physical wellbeing and motivate the users of the day-care centres to develop physical, mental and social skills. I found evidence that users benefit from animal-assisted interventions with dogs – in many ways.

Pour l’histoire du « discours bien construit » : le livre I du De contructione d’Apollonius Dyscole et les reprises chez Priscien / For the history of the "well constructed speech" : the first book of the De Constructione by Apollonius Dyscolus and the improvements by PriscianCallipo, Manuela 15 April 2013 (has links)
The subject of this research is the De constructione by Apollonius Dyscolus, the first treatise on syntax written in classical antiquity, and in particular its first book, studied in comparison with the book XVII de constructione of the Institutiones grammaticae by Priscian, who looked back to Apollonius at the beginning of the VI century. The Greek text, printed according to the edition by G. Uhlig (1910), sometimes modifed because of different textual choices, is followed by its first Italian translation ; furthermore, to allow a comparison with the latin treatise, the corresponding passages of the book XVII by Priscian have been printed and translated too. The commentary aims to explain the critical choices, but particular attention has also been paid to the order of the parts of speech set by Apollonius and to their relationship with Greek and latin grammatical tradition, also on papyrus. With respect to the translated sections of Priscian, a new manuscript, the Vaticanus lat. 3313, has been transcribed ; this made it possible to improve, although only in the details, the text of the edition by Hertz (1855-1859). Texts and translations are preceded by an introduction which, after an excursus about Apollonius' analogical method, analyses the relationship between grammar and philosophy, especially Stoicism and Platonicism, to show that it is not possible to correct Apollonius through Priscian through Apollonius : Priscian's Neoplatonic background seems not to be active in Apollonius, who lived four centuries earlier. Finally, this work offers a short history of manuscript tradition and of modern editions of the two treatises De constructione.

The goal of this study was to determine the influence of sense of coherence on the experiences of participants in a developmental corporate adventure training programme. The corporate adventure training programme was described from an experiential learning paradigm, while sense of coherence was described from a salutogenic paradigm.
The study was undertaken with 37 members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) from different seniority and position in the SAPS. In order to determine the participants' sense of coherence and their experiences in the corporate adventure training programme, one quantitative measuring instrument and one qualitative measuring instrument were used. The quantitative instrument used to determine the participants' sense of coherence, was the orientation to life questionnaire (OLQ). Five participants with the highest scores and five participants with the lowest scores on the orientation to life questionnaire were identified. These 10 participants were subjected to an interview, determining their experiences during the corporate adventure training programme.
The results of this study have shown that people with a higher score on the orientation to life questionnaire approached and experienced the programme differently to those with a lower score on the orientation to life questionnaire. Various hypotheses were formulated from the results of the study. These hypotheses were based on the participants' feedback, and included the fact that all participants experienced the corporate adventure training programme as an opportunity to relax away from work, therefore enhancing their psychological well-being. Relationships between the participants' experiences in the corporate adventure training programme and their scores achieved on the orientation to life questionnaire, was found. The environment influenced the experiences of the participants to a large extend, a finding that differed from findings suggested by previous research. / Indust and Org Psychology / MCOM (IND AND ORG PSY)

Stress, burnout and salutogenic functioning amongst community service doctors in Kwazulu-Natal hospitalsDhaniram, Nirasha 28 February 2003 (has links)
This research worked toward a general aim of analysing the role of salutogenic functioning as moderator variable in coping and noncoping. A sample of forty-one community service doctors (N = 41) employed in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals was obtained.
According to the literature, salutogenic properties are expected to act as generalised resistance resources. Based on this assertion, it was assumed that:
degree of salutogenic functioning = degree of coping = degree of stress and burnout.
The results demonstrated high levels of stress and depersonalisation burnout. Salutogenic functioning tended to be low, especially for sense of coherence. The results indicated, no significant relationship between stress/burnout and salutogenic functioning. Salutogenic functioning was unable to differentiate between copers and noncopers.
These results contradicted the literature assertion that high scores on salutogenic functioning correlate with low scores on stress/burnout. It was concluded that variables other than personality moderated for the high levels of stress and burnout in the sample. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

Personality, coping and sense of coherence of the working motherHerbst, Aletta Wilhelmina 30 June 2006 (has links)
Working mothers face various challenges today, one of which is to be a mother, wife, caretaker and employee all at the same time. Fulfilling these challenging and sometimes demanding roles can contribute to role overload and conflict, which can have a negative impact on organisational effectiveness, as well as the overall wellbeing
of the working mother. This dissertation outlines the relationship between personality dimensions, sense of coherence and the coping styles of working mothers from a salutogenic perspective.
The Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ), Orientations to Life Questionnaire (OLQ) and the Coping Orientations to the Problems Experienced
(COPE) Questionnaire were used to measure the relationship between personality dimensions, sense of coherence and the coping styles of working mothers. The study was conducted with 102 working mothers representing different ethnic groups and occupational levels in different occupational fields and organisations.
A theoretical relationship was established. The empirical investigation provided evidence of such a relationship and it seems that coping styles can be predicted from considering personality dimensions and sense of coherence. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

Exploring peer review in a process approach to student academic writingMotha, Kholofelo Charlotte 11 1900 (has links)
This research explores peer review in the academic writing of ESL university students.
It investigates the problem from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. Overall
findings showed no significant differences between the holistic coherence ratings
given to the original and final drafts of the group of students exposed to a process
approach to writing with peer review. Similarly, there were no significant differences
between the holistic coherence ratings of this experimental group and control group
on their final drafts. However, the findings of finer-grained comparative analyses of
each experimental group student's original and final drafts revealed both positive and
negative results with respect to changes made. The study also explores the changes
in terms of the peer review process, so attempting to analyse in more qualitative
detail how coherence is constituted in student academic writing. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Linguistics)
