In our present image-laden environment that only seems to keep growing, the nature of how we see and interpret this visual information becomes highly relevant for me in my art. Spectacle, nostalgia, notions of portraiture, theatricality and other visual reflections of our present culture industry, are all elements that I address in my work. It is with these ideas in mind that I construct visual fields where disparate forms and images coexist, forming new narratives aside from their individual isolated implications; incorporating art production methods that construct an evolving dichotomy that contains a sense of play, tension, and irony while evoking references to our current social experiences. This dissertation articulates the ways in which black (e)migration to the territorial frontier challenges the master frontier narratives as well as African American migration narratives, and to capture how black frontier settlers and settlements are represented in three contemporary novels. I explore through the lens of cultural geography the racialized landscapes of the real and symbolic American South and the real, symbolic and imaginary black territorial frontier. Borrowing perspectives from cultural and critical race studies, I aim to show the theoretical and practical significance of contemporary literary representations of an almost forgotten historical past. Chapter I traces the sites of history, memory and imagination in migration and frontier narratives of enslaved and newly freed black people in the Oklahoma Territory. Chapter II addresses an oppositional narrative of masculinity in frontier narratives depicted in Standing at the Scratch Line by Guy Johnson. Chapter III examines how the black frontier landscape can be created and recreated across three generations who endure racial threats, violence and the razing of Greenwood during the Tulsa Riot of 1921 in Magic City by Jewell Parker Rhodes. Chapter IV scrutinizes the construction of black frontier subjects and exclusive black communities in Paradise by Toni Morrison. My dissertation seeks to add to and expand the literary studies of migration and frontier narratives, taking into account two popular novels alongside a more academically recognized novel. The selected novels mobilize very different resources, but collectively offer insights into black frontier identities and settlements as sites of a past, present and future African American collective consciousness.

This research has focused on the correlation between corruption and social norms by the used of the anomic theory, which is supported by six variables: the rule of law, the division of labor, the regulator organisms, the collective consciousness, the homogeneous society and amiguismo. The anomie theory refers primarily to the absence of rules that measure the relationship of the various individuals in a group or parts of a whole society; where it is possible to find human appetites with no limits. This theory contributes to the discussions around, and new understandings of, how societies may develop a culture of anti-corruption; by influencing existing social norms and improvements to existing value systems. Analysing the mandate period of the former president of Peru, Alberto Fujimori (July 28, 1990 - November 17, 2000) will provide a working example to explore and understand the relationship between corruption and social norms within the Peruvian society. All the while analysing these case through the framework of the chosen theory.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of partnership in the organization and functioning of groups in society, especially in the formation of an interdisciplinary team working in the educational environment. The study began by investigating the personal opening of every human in order to the partnership possible. It was intended to highlight the role of partnerships for more training and social responsibility in relation to the role of individuals to join a larger group as a team, community or society. The survey also examined how youth are presented in this setting, which are the agonies of our civilization and how interdisciplinarity can influence a more transformative education with reference to its five principles: humility, wait, consistency, respect and detachment. The point of view of the authors Richard Sennet, Georges Gusdorf and Ivani Fazenda was followed. Interdisciplinary research was done through an analysis of the current features in the formation of individuals and a survey about how man has been forming their values in contemporary society. The central question for this reflection was: Is it possible, through an interdisciplinary education, to highlight the partnership as an essential factor for the formation of a collective consciousness? In this study we verified that an interdisciplinary education that emphasizes the partnership could be critical to the formation of a collective consciousness, since it can build and develop social values in individuals creating significant changes in contemporary society and on the next generations. This work also revealed the need for an analysis of the importance of valuing people through an interdisciplinary education. It is only possible to develop a new collective consciousness and partnerships, with diversified values, by individual knowledge. And so, the interdisciplinarity and partnerships are key-pieces in an ontological dimension in which man becomes an integrated and unforgettable part of diverse lives / Essa dissertação de Mestrado apresenta uma pesquisa qualitativa do tipo análise documental histórico/pessoal sobre o significado da parceria na interdisciplinaridade. Seu objetivo é investigar o papel da parceria na organização e funcionamento de grupos na sociedade, principalmente na formação de uma equipe interdisciplinar de trabalho no ambiente educacional, investigando a começar pela abertura pessoal de cada ser para a parceria ocorrer. Pretendeu evidenciar o papel das parcerias para uma formação mais social e responsável em relação ao papel dos indivíduos ao integrar um grupo maior como uma equipe, parceria, coletividade ou sociedade. A pesquisa também analisou como se apresenta a juventude nesse cenário, quais são as agonias da nossa civilização e como a interdisciplinaridade pode influenciar uma educação mais transformadora com referência em seus cinco princípios: humildade, espera, coerência, desapego e respeito e a atual maneira de se pensar a educação sob o ponto de vista dos autores: Richard Sennet, Georges Gusdorf e Ivani Fazenda. A investigação interdisciplinar se deu por meio de uma análise das atuais características na formação dos indivíduos e um levantamento sobre como o homem vem formando seus valores na sociedade contemporânea. A questão central para essa reflexão foi: é possível, por meio de uma educação interdisciplinar, destacar a parceria como fator essencial para a formação de uma consciência coletiva? Verificou-se com esta pesquisa que uma educação interdisciplinar, que destaca a parceria, pode ser fundamental para a formação de uma consciência coletiva, uma vez que pode estruturar e desenvolver nos indivíduos valores sociais capazes de criar mudanças significativas na sociedade contemporânea e para as próximas gerações. Analizuojamą romano pasaulį skirstome į tris personažo gyvenimo sferas: gyvenimą su gamta, gyvenimą su žmonėmis, gyvenimą su dvasinėmis esybėmis. Pastebėta, kad pagrindinis romane vaizduojamas objektas yra ežeras. Jis simbolizuoja pirminį chaosą. Ežero centre – dieviško grožio ir didžiulės energijos sala, ji taip pat yra visos romano erdvės centras. Ežero pakraščiai įkūnija mitinio pasaulio dalis: vienoje pusėje pelkė – anapusinis pasaulis, kitoje dvaras – žmogaus gyvenamasis pasaulis. Kuo toliau į pakraščius nuo salos, tuo aplinka klaidesnė. Dvaro gyventojai nesikeičia nei išvaizda, nei charakteriu, pagrindinio veikėjo Gabrieliaus Aušauto pasikeitimai priklauso nuo jo gyvenimo dvare laiko. Dvaro šeimininkę Augustę, pasaulio tvarkos prižiūrėtoją, nužudo jos virėja Juta, nes pastaroji nori sustabdyti kosmoso kūrimąsi ir grąžinti pasaulį į chaosą. Pagrindinės romano temos – amžinybė, chaoso ir kosmoso kova, pasaulio pirmapradiškumas, kurį žmogus išvysta tik miręs. / This paper deals with intercultural dialogue between Western culture (Lithuanian) and Eastern culture. We suggest to think of myth as a connection between those two cultures in Donaldas Kajokas’s Novel "Ežeras ir kiti jį lydintys asmenys". The main object of this novel is a lake. It symbolizes the primordial chaos. In the middle of the lake there is an island of divine beauty and enormous energy. In this novel the center of the space is an island. The edges of the lake embody the sections of the mythical world. On one side there is a swamp – the ulterior world. On the other side there is a manor house – the man‘s living place. Manor residents do not change their appearance neither their character. The main character Gabrielius Ašautas changes depends on the time he spends in the manor house. The manor house hostess Augusta is the warden of the world order. She was killed by her kitchener Juta because the last-mentioned wants to stop the creation of the cosmos and to recreate the chaos. There are a lot of unreal creatures in the swamp, so-called anatta. In Buddhism, the term anatta refers to the notion of soulless. Eventually the main character turns into anatta. The main themes in this novel are: an eternity, struggle between chaos and cosmos, and the primordiality of the world.

BACKGROUND:  This is an ethnographic study of two communities coming together to serve at-risk youth in St. Augustine, Florida. Compassionate St Augustine (CSA) is a non-profit organization grounded in the Golden Rule that promotes compassion-based practices in schools, businesses, faith communities, and government. The Youth Academy is a high-risk residential juvenile facility housing 70 boys between the ages of 13 and 19. The two joined forces to bring opportunity, healing and hope to these boys and over the last two years, CSA has had over 30 ongoing classes, programs, events and workshops at the academy – teaching everything from Qi Gong to how to properly butter your bread. AIM: My overall aim is to study spiritual activism to inspire action and create a shift in collective consciousness. In this specific setting, I examined what spiritual and/or humanistic factors motivate transformation, what impact happens from the spiritual activism and how does it change the future? THEORY: I examine these questions through the lens of spiritual activism, using ethnographic social science theory. In ethnography, it is important to present a full picture, to use description and quotations. It was important to me to give these at-risk young men their voice, to share their quotes and the pictures they took to give insight into their lives. After the inductive study of ethnography, I applied a deductive study to my observations through a framework of existential health theory, thus doing an abductive study of the spiritual activism and its impact.   METHOD: I spent five weeks doing participatory observation in classes, meetings and events. I conducted semi-structured interviews with students, activists and staff. The boys also participated in Photovoice, taking pictures to show aspects of their life and transformation.     RESULTS: I found the program components of meditation & Alternatives to Violence Program, music, art & etiquette, compassion & service and restoring health equity & social justice created changes the existential health dimensions of these young men. They received tools to transform their current life and their futures.        CONCLUSION: The goal of the CSA program at the Youth Academy is to help change the mindset of the young men and improve their quality of life. The overall goal of spiritual activism is to create an individual transformation in hearts and minds in order to create a collective consciousness shift in worldview. Both involve changing people existentially – changing how a person relates to themselves, to each other, to the world and to life. How we relate to existence determines how we define existence. CSA is helping to fulfill the Youth Academy’s vision of offering these underprivileged young men a true academy – a learning environment filled with opportunities for growth, exploration and healing that will give these boys a new chance to define who they are from a place of wholeness. They are a clear example that restorative justice is what is needed to help heal these young men, to help bring more social justice to society in general and to bring health equity to future generations.

La cancel culture (culture de l'annulation) est depuis quelques années une pratique en ligne populaire, mais controversée. Souvent par milliers, les utilisateurs de réseaux sociaux se rassemblent pour dénoncer publiquement et tenter de minimiser la présence en ligne d’une personnalité publique ou d’une entreprise qu'ils jugent problématique, leur fureur atteignant parfois des sommets impressionnants. Considérant l'impact de cette pratique, nous nous sommes interrogées sur la manière dont elle est perçue et vécue par les personnes qui y participent. Cette étude exploratoire définit d'abord la culture de l'annulation à travers diverses modalités numériques et sociohistoriques, puis analyse les réponses de 19 individus ayant participé à des annulations en ligne. Ces étapes ont permis de découvrir pourquoi les gens décident « d’annuler » et d'explorer les expressions de leurs participations. Finalement, c'est surtout le désir de défendre leurs propres valeurs et les communautés marginalisées qui sont ressorties comme les principales motivations de leurs annulations. / Cancel culture has been a popular, but controversial online practice for the past few years. Often by thousands, social media users gather to publicly denounce and attempt to minimise the online presence of a public figure or company they deem problematic, their fury sometimes attaining impressive heights. Considering the impact of this practice, it is worth asking how it is perceived and experienced by the people concerned. This exploratory study first defines cancel culture through diverse digital and sociohistorical modalities, and then analyses the responses of 19 subjects who have participated in online cancellations. These steps served to discover exactly why people canceled and to explore the expressions of their participations. In the end, it was mostly the desire to stand up for their own values and for marginalized communities that stood out as their main motivators for canceling.

This dissertation concurs with the Jungian postulation that certain psychological archetypes are inclined to be reproduced by the collective unconscious. In turn, these psychological archetypes are revealed to emerge in literature as literary archetypes. It is consequently argued that science fiction has come to form a new mythology because the archetypal images are displaced in a modern, scientific guise. This signifies a shift in the collective world view of humanity, or a shift in its collective consciousness. It is consequently argued that humanity’s collective consciousness has evolved from mythic thought to scientific thought, courtesy of the numerous groundbreaking scientific discoveries of the past few centuries. This dissertation posits as a premise that Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s supposition of humanity’s collective consciousness evolving towards what he calls the Omega Point to hold true. The scientific displacement of the literary archetypes reveals humankind’s evolution towards the Omega Point and a cosmic consciousness. / English Studies / M.A. (English)
