Dwelling on Thresholds

Dwelling on Thresholds reflects upon different modes of living/being, how we feel in different rooms and whom we decide to share space with. It asks how the spaces we dwell in affect our ability to access common and private spheres when needed or wanted. Along the way, tactility has come to play a big part in the work which has visually crystallized into a 30 m2 threshold curtain made up of floor plans of all apartments I have lived in over the past 10 years. An abstract information graphics with textures and colour nuances reflecting levels of well-being, alienation and moods in-between. The accompanying publication investigates our constructed environment as well as modes of thinking and dwelling in ‘the common’.

Essential is cooperation with a blind person Martin Chrastecky, who applies seriously to audio perception. The main outputs are audio records which came into being during this cooperation and the mutual discovering of the space where we live is recorded there.

The Impact of the Physical Environment on the Social Integration of Individuals with Disabilities in Community

Social integration in community is especially important for individuals with disabilities well-being. Although individuals with disabilities reside within the community's physical environment, they are often marginalized in the social environment. This may be the result of individuals with disabilities residing in physical environments that negatively affect opportunities for integration in the social environment. However, there has been little investigation to understand the impact of the physical environment on the social integration of individuals with disabilities in community. The purpose of this investigation was to (a) examine the current body of evidence concerning the impact of a community's physical environment on opportunities for social integration, and (b) determine to what extent individuals with disabilities reside in physical environments that contribute to opportunities for social integration in community. To address the first study purpose, a review of the current body of evidence suggests that community environments that are pedestrian-oriented, possess appropriate common spaces, and fewer neighborhood incivilities, are likely to promote social integration. Secondly, two questions were evaluated: (a) to what extent adults with disabilities' places of residence are correlated with mixed-land use community environments, and (b) to what extent adults with disabilities' place of residence are correlated with community common space. Linear regression was used to determine the magnitude of the relationship between Utah's Davis and Weber counties' census block groups' percent of population with disabilities, percent of population below poverty level, land use diversity, and the percent of the area within walking distance of community common space. The most significant association with individuals with disabilities places of residence are socioeconomic. This study indicates that poverty level predicts 30-35% of the variance in individuals with disabilities place of residence. Given, the very modest association with mixed-land use (4%) and common space (2%), poverty level is the most useful predictor of an individual with disabilities place of residence. Future research should explore more appropriate measures of community common space, at the residence and neighborhood level, and the pedestrian-orientation of the community environment. Future research should also explore the strong association between socioeconomic factors and individuals with disabilities places of residence.

Space organisation of urban blocks is a significant topic of urban design field to achieve correlated urban parts that enhance the variety in urban spaces. However, the rapid urban transformation experienced in the Turkish cities resulted in the generation of similar urban blocks with the lack of spatial variety. Therefore, a re-evolution of space organisation concepts for urban blocks emerges as a design problem in order to cope with the defined problem. From this point of view, the interfaces among public, common and private spaces as the formative parts of space organisation process constitute the essence of this study. Thus, the morphological elements of urban blocks as street, plot and building are constantly reshaped and redefined based on the correlations of this realms. Within this scope, Conzen&rsquo / s town plan method has been adopted in this study for Bah&ccedil / elievler Housing Cooperative Site, to reveal the transformation experienced and the changing relations of street, plot and building throughout the morphological formation processes. In the light of this problem case and method implemented, this research indicates that in Bah&ccedil / elievler, the changing relations between street, plot and buildings are an outcome of the interfaces among public, common and private regarding the permeability along boundaries. Based on this outcome, this study suggests that a new understanding of space organisation in urban blocks regarding the interfaces among public, common and private spaces as counterparts of street, plot and buildings arises as a significant issue that needs to be reconsidered by urban designers, planners, architects and public authorities while defining the design and planning process.

Ce travail de thèse vise à proposer une méthodologie d’évaluation de la capacité à innover et à exporter des PME manufacturières et de procédés. Cette méthodologie est basée sur l’identification et la caractérisation d’un espace commun innovation/export représentant les activités, ressources, compétences qu’une PME doit mobiliser en priorité pour améliorer de façon simultanée ses performances concernant l’innovation et l’export, tout en réduisant l’effort associé à cette montée en performance. Ce travail contribue à la recherche scientifique à travers différents aspects. Tout d’abord, la relation innovation/export en PME, traditionnellement pensée de façon causaliste, a été envisagée à travers le prisme du paradigme de la complexité. Cette contribution théorique a permis d’aboutir à l’identification d’un espace commun conceptuel innovation/export. Puis, cet espace commun a été caractérisé à travers l’identification d’activités conjointes. L’identification de ces activités conjointes est un apport à la fois théorique et managérial car en améliorant une de ces activités, les entreprises actionnent un seul levier qui se répercute simultanément en matière d’innovation et d’export. Dans le contexte des PME, pour qui le manque de ressources est une difficulté capitale, cela prend tout son sens. Enfin, une méthodologie d’évaluation de la capacité à innover et à exporter basée sur cet espace commun a été conçue de façon à proposer un outil multicritères d’aide à la décision dédié aux PME. Cet outil a finalement été testé auprès de PME manufacturières et de procédés de la région Lorraine / This research work aims to suggest a methodology for analyzing the innovation and export capabilities of SMEs working in the manufacturing and process sectors. This methodology is based on the identification and the characterization of a conceptual innovation/export common space representing the activities, the resources, the skills that a SME has to mobilize first and foremost in order to improve in a simultaneous way its performances concerning innovation and export. Working on the activities included in the common space allows the reduction of the effort associated with this performance improvement. This work contributes to the scientific research through various aspects. First of all, the innovation / export relationship in SMEs, traditionally thought in a causal way, was envisaged through the prism of the complexity paradigm. This theoretical contribution allowed the identification of an innovation/export common space. Then, this common space was characterized through the identification of joint activities. The identification of these joint activities is both a theoretical and managerial contribution because by improving one of these activities, companies activate a single lever which echoes simultaneously on innovation and export capabilities. In the context of SMEs, for whom the lack of resources is a major difficulty, it makes perfect sense. Finally, an evaluation methodology of the innovation and export capabilities based on this common space was designed so as to propose a multicriteria decision-making tool dedicated to SMEs. This tool was finally tested within manufacturing and process SMEs of the Lorraine region

Škola, základ života - Soubor školských staveb v Ostravě na Černé louce / School, the Foundation of Life – a Complex of Educational Buildings in Ostrava, Cerna louka

The location of Černá louka is situated between the city-centre of Moravská Ostrava and an area of Slezská Ostrava next to the confluence of two rivers – Ostravice and Lučina. The development at the building site of Černá louka is a result from an international competition 2010, which winner was the project Culture Meadow from studio Maxwan. The main idea of the project is to concentrate cultural and educational buildings around a culture meadow. This design has been used as a default situation for the master´s thesis. The complex of schools is situated at the parcel of existing Miniuni-site between cultural cluster Černá louka and the residential quarter Nová Karolina. The volume of the school with its front-spaces reacts to the surrounding structures. In the middle of the complex arises a half-public open space, where are located the internal entrances. Because of the placing of the school next to the city-centre the multifunctional pitch is situated on the roof of the gym. The design of the school respects principles of the age differentiation just as the horizontal integration. That´s why the substance makes up a symbiosis of 5 parts - common space, gym, first and second level, gymnasium. These parts are connected together and at the same time enable to use individual parts separately. The building of kindergarten with its garden is separated from the school because of differential needs of the smallest children.
