Battisti, Juliana January 2016 (has links)
This study aims to describe the literacy orientations of children from first and third grades of an elementary public school located in a rural area in southern Brazil, as well as to investigate the presence and uses of writing at school, at home, and in other scenarios. The study involved nine months of ethnographic fieldwork, wtih participant observation, audiovisual recording of classroom settings, interviews with teachers and other members of the community, photographic records, and document collection. The entire theoretical investigative framework is based on the New Literacy Studies (HEATH, 1982.1983, 2012; STREET, 1984; BARTON, 2007), which understand literacy as a set of social practices involving reading and writing inscribed in a specific cultural context. The main concepts that guide this work are literacy (BARTON, HAMILTON, 1998), literacy events (HEATH, 1982) and practices of literacy (BARTON, 2007). From the data analysis, we could conclude that there is, in the school, literacy guidelines aligned with the promotion of a socially constructed knowledge, and it is directly connected to the socio-economic configuration of the groups who are part of the community. Writing mediates a connections between life that is out of school and life that happens inside of it, establishing determined functions for literacy. In this school, reading and writing are used to: be a farmer; be a citizen of the world; be a researcher. In addition, we found that children and their families are members of a social group that uses writing in different ways and for different purposes, as well as the children end up getting involved in literacy practices related to the adult world, either as participants or observers of them. Moreover, we found that there is a complex relationship between social identities of gender, the social identity of being a farmer, and literacies. This study aims to give visibility to the literacy practices of members and of children living in a rural community in different contexts, opening ways for the school institution to recognize and to value the knowledge that these people bring to school, deconstructing a deficit view of rural populations.

Marciana Gomes Falcão Alves 08 April 2014 (has links)
Family and school are areas of human development that promote physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth of the individual preparing him for insertion in his culture by strengthening his social relationships. However, each of them has its specific features in its tasks . While families have the primary function of providing conditions which favor the full development of their children, regarding the feeling of belonging, physical, emotional and financial care, school, on the other hand, has as its ultimate purpose to lead children and young people for life in society as citizens able to live, socialize and act competently in the contemporary world. It is in this context school/family that it is sought to investigate this relation, which is as narrow as it is conflicting. Thus, our thesis main goal was to understand the social representations that families that live in situations of social vulnerability, in São Lourenço da Mata, make or build about school. The chosen theoretical and methodological support was Moscovicis Social Representation Theory, which provided the understanding of how families that joined this study anchor and objectivize their social relationships about school, considering the values, feelings and social beliefs shared by this group. The methodology of the study was of qualitative nature, and for data collection were utilized semi-structured interviewing and the Free Association technique. Ten members of municipal school students families participated, from a city of the Metropolitan Region of Recife, who live in situations of social vulnerability. The findings of this work were analyzed by the Analysis of the Theme Content, where we sought to identify centers of meaning from the words evoked in Free Association as well as the content of the interviews. As a result, we infer that the group of studied families represents the School as" education" and "respect", supported by the social, political and educational environment where they are in and make their objectives when en rolling their children at school aiming for a more dignified future, and a good job.

A study of school stakeholder perceptions of the Safe Schools Programme of the Western Cape Education Department as implemented at a primary school in the Mitchell's Plain district

Powrie, Joy L January 2003 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Education))--Peninsula Technikon, 2003 / Teaching and Learning cannot take place in an unsafe environment. The school plays a central role in the socialisation of a child and it is critical that schools offer a safe environment in which learning can take place. This study attempts to investigate school stakeholder perceptions of the Safe Schools Programme of the WCED and its impact on the learning environment of one primary school in the Mitchell's Plain district. The study as a whole is set against the research literature on crime and violence in schools. The literature surveyed covered the following aspects: (I) What constitutes crime and violence in schools; (2) The effects of crime and violence on the school environment; and (3) Approaches to reducing crime and violence in schools. This research project is a case study of school stakeholder perceptions of the Safe Schools Programme of the WCED as implemented in one primary school. Qualitative research techniques were employed and data was collected by means of individual semi-structured interviews with the acting principal and the safety officer of the school. A focus group interview was held with a group of educators and support staff members. Learners were excluded from the study as the aim was to determine the perceived impact of the Safe Schools Programme on the learning environment at the school. Primary school learners may perhaps not be able to articulate their views on the issue under research. Parents were not included in this research process but could be a valuable source of data for future research.

The present work is a comparative analysis of the Unit Development Plans (PDUs) and its relation to the Pedagogical Political Projects (PPPs) of two public nursery schools in Jundiaí. The first school is located at downtown and the second one at the rural area. This paper was focused on the nursery schools taking into consideration the low investment, research and valorization in that area in detriment of other steps of the Education. The Federal Constitution of 1988 recommends the democratic administration of the public school viewing a new comprehension of the education and the relations inside the School as a way to democracy, once the school is an excellent place to mature the democratic process. So, the possibility of the collegiate administration of the pedagogical project is recent and few investigated, especially the Childish Education. At first, this paper intends to be a source for new researchers in this area. Secondly, intends to valorize and recognize the importance of that step of the education. The research was structured in the analysis of the written plans of the two nursery schools, and at the cultural atmosphere of the schools, brought face to face to the fellows¿ interviews involved in the process. As a secondary source we make reference to writes as Raymond Williams, Viñao Frago, Ilma Veiga, Marília Spósito, among others, which allowed us to keep the dialog between the documents of this paper. Our purpose is to compare the theorical aspect, the plans, the proposals; the legal aspect, the deliberations imposed by the laws, and finally the dimension of the culture of the school, which permeates thoughts and actions. In view of that some questions guide our research: What are the limits and possibilities for the collegiate administration in the nursery schools? How can we measure if the professionals involved understand the democratic process? Do they know the difference between ¿take part¿ and ¿decide¿? Does the legislation compromise or not the possibilities of the collegiate work regarding to the PPP and the democratic administration? This democratization movement has to be understood as a process, in which although it isn¿t totally finished show us ways and possibilities. At the same time this paper reconstructs the history of the Childish Education, point us new challenges / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestre em Educação

Exploring rural household strategies to keep children in school : the case of Nyamande village, Murewa, Zimbabwe

Zaranyika, Hazel R. 14 November 2012 (has links)
M.A. / This dissertation is about how poor households struggled to keep children in the school system during a protracted political and socio-economic crisis in post-2000 Zimbabwe. The setting of the research is Nyamande village in Murewa District, Zimbabwe. Fieldwork was conducted between May 2010 and July 2010, at a time that many believe to be past the peak of Zimbabwe’s crisis in 2008. In-depth interviews and observations were used to collect qualitative data from families and households in Nyamande village. My findings revealed that even when such households did not get surplus produce, they still sold what they had in order to obtain income to fund their children’s schooling. Households supplemented their farm produce with off-farm activities such as casual labour on plots, informal trading and sale of assets. Child labour was also employed as a means of supplementing family income in order to meet schooling requirements through activities such as casual labour on farms and roadside selling of produce. The introduction of the multi-currency system or dollarisation (as it was commonly known) in April 2009 improved the conditions in Zimbabwe to some extent; however complexities experienced in Nyamande village included access to the US dollar and Rand currencies. These challenges led to the re-emergence of the barter or exchange system during and after dollarisation as most households adopted this as a strategy to provide for their children’s schooling. Although households displayed various forms of resilience in their efforts to keep children in school, interventions regarding the viability and sustainability of some of these strategies should be considered. Various stakeholders including government, private sector and non-government organisations need to play an active role in uplifting rural communities in promoting children’s schooling.

Parental involvement in the governance of secondary school in Eritrea: Current trends and future possibilities

Sebhat, Kidanemariam Menghistu January 2003 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / This study was designed to investigate the current policies and practices of secondary school governance in Eritrea. There is a basic need to investigate the nature of parental involvement in school governance, particularly in relation to policies enshrined in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) guidelines. The study examined the parents' commitment to execute their school governance role properly and to determine their capacity to fulfil their responsibilities with respect to the powers and functions vested in them. Education was merely the domain of the school and parents were discouraged from interfering in matters of school governance, therefore parental participation has been very limited. Thus, the focus of the study was to investigate the prevailing problems that curtail parental involvement and identify appropriate strategies for improving and strengthening school governance. / South Africa

A study of the collaborative team approach in education support services in the Western Cape

Tau, Mamathealira Irene January 2006 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / In South Africa, some of the problems experienced in moving towards an inclusive education system are a lack of resources, a lack of commitment and a poor understanding of how to aid successful inclusion. The implementation of inclusion is a process that has been initiated by Education White Paper 6 (Dept. of Education, 2001) and is still in the process of developing the necessary education support. This study aimed to investigate the collaboration between the District Based Support Team, the School Based Support Team and the School Governing Body which represents the parents. The main objective was to investigate how the above bodies support and assist learners who experience barriers to learning, development and participation through a collaborative and consultative problem approach. / South Africa
