Sweden has the highest number of single households in the world, yet the majority of household appliances are targeted towards other groups. In a society where single households and compact living are becoming increasingly present, the need for targeted products has become more relevant. The purpose of this project was to design a product which addresses these problems, and eases the everyday life of the intended users. The project was executed using several design methods, such as analytical, observational and practical ones, including interviews with a focus group consisting of 15 people. The use of these design methods identified that the biggest sources of concern amongst the target group were those related to the drying of dishes washed by hand, which led to the development of a dish rack with built in dryers. The design of this product was based on the testing of potential technical solutions and feedback from the focus group, resulting in a kitchen appliance that is uniquely adapted to the needs of single households with limited kitchen space. This design was then presented through sketches, virtual 3D models, and a physical prototype.

Uppsatsen utforskar Compact Livings hållbarhetsperspektiv. Hur design kan användas för att skapa en positiv erfarenhet hos allmänheten. Idén är att kommunicera och vidga förståelsen av hållbarhet med Compact Living. Det resulterade i en möbel som harflera funktioner (avskärmare, spegel & anslagstavla) och som kanplaceras fritt för att arbeta med kreativiteten hos användaren. I utforskningen utfördes interjvuer och undersökning av marknaden därdet kom fram ett stort behov av förvaring. Ett negativt behov somuppfattades komma ifrån den ökande överkonsumtionen. Projektetsresultat bygger på en annan aspekt av Compact Living; Varierad eller Flexibel användning. Utvecklingen av resultatet bestod utav individuell idégenerering och workshops tillsammans med användare.I skapandet av modell användes skiss och cad för att ta fram formoch lätt hantering. Diskussionen tar upp bland annat defintionen avCompact Living och att ha kreativtet som en funktion.

As cities face widespread housing shortages, as well as a large need for reducing the average ecological footprint, two of the biggest challenges for the housing sector today concerns affordability and environmental impact. The tiny house movement is a growing movement that is meeting these challenges head-on - but as of now, the topic has been largely overlooked in academia. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the motivations why people choose to live in tiny houses of tiny houses and the challenges the residents encounter. Furthermore, the study explores what can be learned from the tiny house movement that is of relevance to the Swedish housing market. To fulfill the purpose of the study, a mixed-methods approach has been used in the form of a literature study and semi-structured interviews. The most common motivations identified in the study were financial and simplicity. The main challenges were identified to be legal, placement and practical challenges. The results from this study have been very much in line with what previous studies have found, and this could mean that we might be reaching a general understanding of motivations and challenges in the tiny house movement.

Det här projektet berör människor som är engagerade i kreativt hantverk i sin hemmiljö, och de särskilda utmaningar de står inför. Arbetet har genomförts i enlighet med designprocess. Med en grund i enkätstudier, personliga intervjuer och observationer har en djupare förståelse för användargruppens situation och behov kunnat skapas. Genom sätta i målgruppens perspektiv i fokus har en iterativ process av generering och utvärdering kunnat genomföras och återkopplastill användare för att kunna säkerhetsställa arbetets riktning. Designarbetet har resulterat ett förslag på en produkt som är ämnad att underlätta kombinationen av levnadsmiljö med den miljö som gynnar användarens kreativa skapande.  Den resulterande lösningen erbjuder en möjlighet att kunna förvara redskap och annat material,överblickbart i anpassad ordning inom en armlängds avstånd. Samtidigt är det enkelt att gömma innehållet och flytta undan möbeln när ytan behövs till andra delar av vardagen. Anpassningsbarhet och flexibilitet har varit grundläggande krav för att användaren både skall få maximal nytta och kunna fortsätta använda produkten även när hens behov ändras. Detta är mycket viktigt för att kunna göra en produkts livscykel ekologiskt försvarbar. Konstruktionen är skapad för att ge produkten en bra potential att kunna vidareutvecklas för en effektiv och klimatvänlig produktion.

Idén bakom examensarbetet är att vidareutveckla mitt tidigare koncept som innefattar ett kombinerat smink- och skrivbord som är designat för målgruppen som bor trångt och är i behov av en multifunktionell lösning. I det här arbetet ser jag över huruvida mitt koncept kan tas vidare till en fullt fungerade prototyp. Genom en iterativ designprocess har jag kunnat arbeta fritt för att nå mitt mål.  Designprocessen inleddes med att jag behövde se över de beslut som tidigare tagits och hitta ytterligare grund för dessa. Produkten var inriktad mot målgruppen användare som har behovet att sminka sig och använda en laptop. Dessa personer är till en majoritet kvinnor och därför är produkten anpassad efter personer med en längd mellan 150-180 cm. För att få en förståelse för hur jag utvecklar en mer förfinad produkt utefter målgruppen utforskade jag olika material och produktionsmetoder. Genom att utföra och analysera nya användarundersökningar kunde jag fastställa behoven och gå vidare till att ta fram prototypen. Materialundersökningar, ett ständigt produktionstänk, snabba skalmodeller och funktionsmodeller har varit avgörande för att skapa den skarpa prototypen. Fasen för att ta fram prototypen har innefattat mycket testande och undersökningar för att få en förståelse för materialen. Den slutgltiga skarpa prototypen ger en känsla för de olika materialmöten som finns och hur ergonomiupplevelsen vid användning känns samtidigt som det erbjuder alla funktioner som jag fastställer. Man kan öppna luckan, förvara sitt smink och kan spegla sig med en belysning som förenklar då du sminkar dig. Utöver det går det också att använda en laptop på bordet eller ha den uppställd på hyllan tillsammans med separat tangentbord och mus för bättre ergonomi. Den är tänkt att användas i en miljö där man vill spara in på plats men samtidigt vill behålla funktionalitet.

This thesis proposes "compact living" as a sustainable lifestyle, enabling dwellers to fulfil theirliving requirements while considering ecological concerns. The idea of this project is derivedfrom a phenomenon that urban immigrants move to smaller houses because of the shortage ofaffordable rental house in dense Chinese urban areas, which causes an issue regarding lack ofwell-functioning small housings for urban tenants. In order to develop suitable compact livingsolutions, this scenario-based design project has developed. The compact living requirementsof Chinese urban tenants were studied through design research. Meanwhile, the studies ofexisting small-space solutions aim to come up with solutions by concluding strategies for thespatial-plan. This is an examination paper in information design specializing in spatial design. This work is searching for more understanding of what joy and co-creation in interaction with a 3D-model can bring to the process of communicating possibilities to live flexibly within a small space in a modular house, focusing on the digital oriented ‘generation Z’. We live in a time where climate threats are more real than ever but in Sweden we consume and expand more than is sustainable within our planet’s bio-capacity. Since Sweden is a rural country, Swedes are used to having a generous amount of personal space. This may be one reason why we don’t realize or understand that, or even how, we can live in smaller space, making our biological footprint shallower. Even though Sweden could be seen as a highly democratic country we still need to strive to make our building processes more democratic. Many of our built environments are designed without participation of the users, in the area of housing or domestic construction this can lead to an experience of alienation in shaping one’s life, due to the strong connection between the home and the resident’s identity. This examination paper is based on theories within Information Design, Human Centered-Design, Human-Computer Interaction and on theories concerning spatial perception and how shapes and form can be used to influence it in order to make smaller living-spaces appear more attractive. The methods are mostly based on literary study which has been supplemented with user dialog and cocreation in real-time, making every user a part of the process and therefore even a co-creator of their own design proposal. This with the intention of demonstrating how a modular house can be an alternative for living smaller but still living according to every user’s own personal needs and values.

In Sweden, there are students who live in small student apartments. These apartments can be called compact living as a student apartment can be as small as 16 square meters. To take advantage of the place that is in small homes, it would be good if larger furniture could be combined into a piece of furniture. On behalf of Husmuttern AB, this work has been aimed at exploring furniture concepts with sleeping and their functions in a compact living environment for students. The issues being examined are: -          What functions are desirable in a multifunctional seating and sleeping furniture for students and people living in compact living environments? -          How can a multifunctional seating and sleeping furniture be designed, that is applied to students living in a compact-living environment? Human Centered Design was used as a method and thus a qualitative data collection was carried out in the form of observations. The respondents were in the primary target group and were observed in their everyday lives in their homes. A focus group was involved in generating ideas and concepts. Functional prototypes were built, and 3D models were created in SolidWorks. Digital testing of the concepts was carried out and the development of the Generation Sofa Bed was realized. There is a discussion about how reliable this study is, when the results became situational. However, the respondents were from a limited audience and had different views on what they wanted from a sofa bed, which provided rewarding information for the development of the furniture. The conclusion is that while the Generation Sofa Bed needs to be further developed through testing and evaluation of storage facilities, it has great potential to become a finished product. / I Sverige bor det studenter i små studentlägenheter. De lägenheterna kan kallas för compact living då en studentlägenhet kan vara så liten som 16 kvadratmeter. För att ta vara på den plats som finns i små hem vore det bra om större möbler kunde kombineras till en möbel. På uppdrag av Husmuttern AB har detta arbete haft som syfte att utforska möbelkoncept med sov- och sittfunktioner i en compact living miljö för studenter. De frågor som undersöks är: 1.      Vilka funktioner är önskvärda i en multifunktionell sitt- och sovmöbel för studenter och personer som bor i compact living miljö? 2.      Hur kan en multifunktionell sitt- och sovmöbel konstrueras, som är tillämpad för studenter som bor i compact-living miljö?  Human Centered Design användes som metod och därmed genomfördes en kvalitativ datainsamling i form av observationer. Respondenterna var med i den primära målgruppen och observerades i sin vardag i sina hem. En fokusgrupp var med och genererade idéer och koncept. Funktionsprototyper byggdes och 3D modeller skapades i SolidWorks. Digital testning av koncepten genomfördes och utvecklingen av Bäddsoffan Generations blev förverkligad. Det finns en diskussion om hur pålitlig denna studie är, då resultaten blev situationsbaserade. Dock var respondenterna från en begränsad målgrupp och hade olika syn på vad de ville ha av en bäddsoffa, vilket gav givande information till utvecklingen av möbeln. Slutsatsen är att medan Bäddsoffan Generations behöver vidareutvecklas genom testning och utvärdering om förvaringsmöjligheter, så har den stor potential att bli en färdig produkt.

The goal in my bachelor thesis has been to create a multifunctional furniture, a product in which the form has followed the function to allow the user variation for the body and practical functions. The purpose of this project has been to encourage reduction of unnecessary furniture within compact living spaces and instead offer better solutions to practical multifunctional furniture. In my research phase for this project I studied different forms of multifunctional furniture on the market as well as carried out different observational studies of student living and how students generally use their furniture. The first being various visits to different student rums and apartments. The other being a closer study at Malmstens school in which I allowed students to create their own space and interact with the furniture to study how the students used the furniture and how the students sat in the furniture. A basic, yet crucial, survey about multifunctional furniture was sent out to gather information on what people do at home and what type of furniture people prefer if they were to live in a compact space. The research gathered led to the next phase of the project in which many different sketching techniques, both 2d and 3d, resulted in a multifunctional furniture which offers variation within sitting and practical use. As a result of the analysis a furniture prototype will be built and shown at Malmstens Spring Exhibition and Vallastaden Living and House Society Exhibit in September 2017. / I detta examensarbete har målet varit att skapa en multifunktionell möbel, en produkt där form följer funktion som erbjuder variation både för kroppen och för praktiska funktioner. Syftet med att uppnå detta mål är att uppmuntra till minimering av antalet möbler på en begränsad yta och därmed bidra till minskad konsumtion och erbjuda fler praktiska lösningar i hemmet. Jag vill upplysa om och uppmuntra tanken att möbler kan passa människans flexibla behov. En insamlingsetapp av information från studiebesök, deltagande observationer, en enkät och en omvärldsanalys har lett till en god uppfattning om hur människor kan möblera i framtiden. Under dessa observationsstudier besöktes olika former av studentboende med fokus på att observera förhållande mellan hur möbeln användes och placeras i rummet. I den andra studien som ägde rum på Malmstensskolan skapades ett påhittat rum som fick inredas av olika studenter för att se vilka funktioner möbeln användes till och hur studenten rörde sig i sina möbler. Undersökningen har lett till en omfattande skissprocess med olika skissmetoder. Resultatet är en multifunktionell möbel som ger variation för både sittande och praktiskt användning. Utifrån detta examensarbete tillverkas en prototyp som ska ställas ut vid Malmstens Vårutställning 2017 och vid Vallastaden Bo- och Samhällsexpo 2017.
