Ability beliefs, achievement goals and intrinsic motivation in physical education

Wang, C. K. John January 2001 (has links)
This thesis examined the relationships of the conceptions of sport ability, achievement goals, and intrinsic motivation in Physical Education. Studies 1 and 2 investigated the psychometric properties of the Conceptions of the Nature of Athletic Ability Questionnaire (CNAAQ), a measure of sport ability beliefs. Results showed that the revised version of the scale possesses sound psychometric properties in assessing sport ability beliefs among children and youth. In addition, the relationships between ability beliefs, goal orientations, perceived competence, and behavioural indicators (intentions and amotivation) were also examined in the first two studies. An incremental belief predicted task orientation, whereas an entity belief predicted ego orientation. Intentions to be physically active were predicted by goal orientations indirectly through perceived competence, and directly by task orientation. In addition, amotivation was predicted directly and indirectly by ability beliefs and directly by achievement goals. Specifically, entity beliefs directly predicted amotivation, task orientation negatively predicted amotivation. Study 3 examined the interrelationships between ability beliefs, achievement goals, perceived competence, behavioural regulation, and arnotivation using cluster analysis. Five distinct clusters were identified based on these motivational constructs and these profiles were found to be related to perceived physical self-worth and levels of sport participation. Study 4 experimentally manipulated sport ability beliefs and examined their causal influence on achievement goals and motivation patterns when faced with failure. The causal link between ability beliefs and goals was supported. Ability attributions for failure were stronger for entity theorists compared to incremental theorists. However, hypotheses predicting differences on effort attributions, affective reactions, and behavioural markers were not supported. Study 5 examined the effects of goal involvement on enjoyment and intrinsic motivation under positive feedback. The results suggested that task-involved and ego-involved participants did not differ in self-reported enjoyment and free-choice behaviour measure. However, the free-choice behaviour of the ego-involved participants may not be fully intrinsically motivated. In addition, autonomous communication increased the positive effects of task and ego involvement on intrinsic motivation and enjoyment, whereas controlling communication had an undermining effect. Overall, results show that high incremental beliefs and high task orientation facilitate adaptive motivational patterns. Autonomy-supportive contexts also enhanced students' task motivation compared to controlling contexts.

Effectiveness Ofconceptual Change Instruction Accompaniedwith Demonstrations And Computer Assisted Concept Mapping On Students&#039 / Understanding Of Matter Concepts

Yavuz, Ayse 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT EFFECTIVENESS OF CONCEPTUAL CHANGE INSTRUCTION ACCOMPANIED WITH DEMONSTRATIONS AND COMPUTER ASSISTED CONCEPT MAPPING ON STUDENTS&rsquo / UNDERSTANDING OF MATTER CONCEPTS Yavuz, Ayse PhD., Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education Supervisor: Prof. Dr. &Ouml / mer Geban January 2005, 133 pages The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of conceptual change instruction accompanied with demonstration and computer assisted concept mapping on seventh grade students understanding matter concepts. In addition, the effect of instruction on students&rsquo / attitudes toward science as a school subject and the effect of gender difference on understanding matter concepts were investigated. Seventy five, seventh grade students from four classes of a General Science Course taught by the same teacher at &Ouml / zel ENKA Middle School during fall semester of 2003&ndash / 2004 was enrolled in this study. The classes were randomly assigned as conrol group and experimental group. Students in the control group received traditional science instruction including traditional lecture method with discussions and traditionally designed labsheets. Students who were in the experimental group received conceptual change instruction accompanied with demonstration and computer assisted concept mapping. Both groups were administered Matter Concept Test as pre- and post-tests and Attitude Scale toward Science as a School Subject. In addition to these, Science Process Skill Test was used at the beginning of the study to determine students&rsquo / science process skills. T-test, univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used for testing the hypotheses of the study. The results indicated that conceptual change instruction accompanied with demonstration and computer assisted concept mapping caused a better acquisition of scientific conceptions related to matter concepts and produced more positive attitudes toward science as a school subject than traditionally designed sicence instruction. In addition, science process skill was a strong predictor in understanding matter concepts. On the other hand, no significant effect of gender difference on students&rsquo / understanding of matter concepts and their attitudes toward science as a school subject was found.

Conceptions of geographic information systems (GIS) held by senior geography students in Queensland

West, Bryan A. January 2008 (has links)
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) represent one of the major contributions to spatial analysis and planning of the new technologies. While teachers and others have viewed its potential contribution to geographical education as considerable, it has not been known with any certainty whether they present a valuable educational tool that aids geographical education. The value of GIS to geographical education is viewed as depending on a geographical education being, in itself, valuable. Within this context, synergetic focus groups are employed to explore the conceptions of GIS held by 109 secondary school students studying Senior Geography in metropolitan and regional Queensland, Australia. A phenomenographic approach is adopted to identify the six qualitatively different ways, or conceptions, in which the participating students experience GIS as: 1. Maps and a source of maps in geography. 2. Mapping in geography: a way to use and create maps. 3. A professional mapping tool: exceeding the needs of senior geography. 4. Frustrating geography: irksome and presenting many challenges to the student-user. 5. Relevant geography: within and beyond the school experience. 6. A better geography: offering a superior curriculum, and broader geographical education, when contrasted to a senior geography that omits its use. The structural and referential elements of each of these conceptions are elucidated within corresponding Categories of Description. The qualitatively different ways in which the conceptions may be experienced are illustrated through an Outcome Space, comprising a metaphoric island landscape. This structural framework reveals that for the Senior Geography students who participated in this investigation, the extent to which GIS may augment the curriculum is influenced by the nature of students' individual understandings of how GIS manages spatial data. This research project is a response to repeated calls in the literature for teachers of geography themselves to become researchers and for a better understanding of GIS within geography education. It reviews the salient literature with respect to geography and geography education generally, and GIS within geographical education specifically. The investigation has confirmed that qualitatively different conceptions of GIS exist amongst students and that these are not consistently aligned with assumptions about its use and benefits as presented by current literature. The findings of the study contribute to knowledge of the potential educational outcomes associated with the use of GIS in geography education and decisions related to current and potential geography curricula. It provides guidance for future curriculum development involving GIS and argues for additional research to inform educators and the spatial sciences industry about the actual and perceived role of GIS within geography education.

Reverberações da Lei n 8.213/91 à luz das concepções de deficiência: estudo de caso sobre o programa de sensibilização gerencial em uma organização privada de ensino profissionalizante / Reverberations of Law n 8.213/91 in the light of conceptions of disabilities: a case study of the sensitization management program in a private organization of vocational education

Andrea Soares Caruso 22 March 2012 (has links)
Based on the repercussions of Law n. 8.213/1991, which provides the legal obligation of private Brazilian companies to hire from 2% to 5% of recipients of Social Security or rehabilitated persons with disabilities (PCDs) qualified in their staff, the goal of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the Quota Law, with reference to prevailing conceptions of disability within a private organization of vocational education through its Management Awareness Project. The project aimed to strengthen managerial awareness in the initial steps in implementing an institutional program of valuing diversity. The main hypothesis formulated for the research, among others related to the concepts of disability by managers, is that the positive reverberations produced by the Quota Law reach, including business organizations allegedly apart of the movement inclusionist. In order to evaluate the concepts of disability, statistical research designs were used, including the Shapiro-Wilk test to determine if the answers to questions were configured or not using a normal distribution, as well as the Pearson Correlation Coefficient to measure the intensity of the linear relationship between variables. It served as instruments of a socio-demographic questionnaire survey and an inventory of conceptions of disability (ICD), which is directed to the attitudinal object, considering the favorable and unfavorable social perceptions in this group. This conceptions of disability inventory is made up of seven blocks of statements and a Likert scale of six points, which was applied in a universe that includes 60 strategically selected participants in three (3) groups (Group 1 pilot - involving 30 participant areas of the Steering Committee of the project in the company, Group 2 pilot - involving 12 trainees and Group Management - involving 18 participants, including Area Managers and Team Managers of the Superintendent of Educational Products). With the results of the evaluation of the concepts of disability by the DCI, sensitization workshops were conducted with participants in order to sensitize them and disseminate knowledge on social inclusion and employment of PCDs, the actions of public policy at the present time, the nature deficiencies, considering the social aspects of professionalism, and employability of disabled people in the company. For this purpose, techniques and procedures employed were recreational, and debates for critical reflection on the part of the participants. The evaluation of the reaction was conducted at the end of these workshops. All the data collected so far allowed the possibility to proceed to a diagnosis of conceptions that prevail over the organization PCDs target search. The results showed the coexistence of different conceptions of disability, indicating that, although negative conceptions were self perpetuating, the reverberations of the Quota Law have shown positive effects clearly valuing thus corporate actions pointed to human diversity in the workplace. In conclusive terms, it is considered, however, that the process of labor inclusion should be perceived by managers as continuous and toward changing human behavior in organizations facing the professionalization of PCDs. Later, having the results of this research as support, an institutional action plan will be implemented, as a proposal for a program christened on 10 projects that will serve as a synthetic model for Brazilian companies interested in including diversity and retaining talented people with disabilities in their jobs in order to guarantee them the right to full citizenship.

EDUCAÇÃO MUSICAL NOS ANOS INICIAIS DO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL: CONCEPÇÕES E AÇÕES DE COORDENADORAS PEDAGÓGICAS ESCOLARES / MUSICAL EDUCATION IN THE INITIAL YEARS OF FUNDAMENTAL STUDY: CONCEPTIONS AND ACTIONS OF THE SCHOOL S PEDAGOGIC COORDINATORS

Santos, Lucimar Marchi dos 15 May 2006 (has links)
This dissertation is part of the Education and Arts research line in the Post Graduate Program in Education at the Education Center of the Federal University of Santa Maria. This research used a qualitative approach, with the application of semi-structured interviews for data collection, in order to understand the conceptions and actions of the pedagogic coordinators working inside the city schools of Santa Maria / RS. Two criteria were utilized - spatial proximity and availability to be part of the research process. I chose to interview pedagogic coordinators working in schools in Camobi, a neighborhood in Santa Maria/RS. Nine institutions matched the spatial proximity criteria, and all nine pedagogic coordinators agreed to become part of the research. This work is divided in five chapters, dealing, respectively, with (1) school democratic management, in which I consider the pedagogic coordination in the school context and in relation to the processes of administration; (2) Musical Education in the initial years, presenting aspects of Musical Education at this level of instruction, since the LDB 9.394/96 and the PCN-Arte, and approaching the role of teachers working in the initial years with the teaching of Music, as well as showing the functions music can have in school; (3) research methodology, in which I refer to the methodological paths takes to the accomplishment of this dissertation; in (4) pedagogic coordinators: brief description, there are outlines of the participants; and (5) discussion of the results, chapter in which I write about the results found by the research in relation to the intended goals.

ABSTRACT The starting point for the study is culture and body as basic conceptions which I argue as necessary in the discussions of monographs developed in a format of degree completion in Licentiate Physical Education, in public Universities in the estate of Bahia and in the projects of the referred courses. The methodological characterization of the research is on a qualitative and exploratory approach according to the established objectives, based on the conception of the historical dialectical materialism, and it is characterized as a concentrated effort in analyzing the existence or not of a hegemonic or counter hegemonic process in the categories of culture and body, acknowledging the existence of a modernity project of corporal alienation through the medicalization of the body and society. The plotted objectives were analyze the conception of “culture” and “body” expressed in the monographs for the degree completion (from 2007 to 2009) and in the projects of the courses in Licentiate Physical Education of the public universities in Bahia; and, analyze the study object of the field of Physical Education expressed in those projects, understanding them as the delineators of such conceptions the guiding Resolutions and delimiters of the organizations of courses in the field and the courses’ projects themselves, which are also guiding documents for the course formation and of the political and social project. Thus comes the meaning of analyzing, under the light of the contradictions, the conceptions of culture and body in the monographs and in the pedagogical projects of the field in question. For the reasoning and orientation in the analysis process in this research, three theses were also supportive to treat the object of study in the field, the professional formation and the pedagogical projects of the courses Licentiate in Physical Education enlighten by the Physical Education Guidelines of the field (SILVA in 2002, FIGUEIREDO in 2005 and ROCHA in 2010). Gramsci oriented the discussions on hegemonic and counter hegemonic culture, power and the ideological of critical subjects in the historical process, as well as Véron was highlighted to treat the social system in the production of meaning. From a total of two hundred and sixty five monographs tabulated from four public Universities, fifty four works were selected as they had as topic of reflection and knowledge production “School”. In the analyzed period, within the knowledge of Physical Education, it is noticeable the exploration of the area in other fields of knowledge which very recently not even integrated the debate in the area, as well as it is perceptible the visualization of isolation of knowledge including the ones which come from related areas, with no articulation in the discussions with the empirical field, including in the perspective of society, culture and body. In this lack resides the hegemonic role of formation, as well as the counter hegemonic role, having in direction the school space as field of reflection, because it is where the most expressive basis of political pedagogical formation happens. Thus, it is urgent the discussion about/on the culture and about/on the body as a historical subject, in the school space, a local elected to an educational politic of consensus (alienating, servile, noncritical, controlled). This is the space, in potential to the transformation intended to the overcoming of a Physical Education still technical instrumental.

Thalamus Håkansson, Amanda, Seilitz, Maria January 2018 (has links)
Background: Several studies have mapped self-injury related material online, consisting of blogs, videos, photos and chatcommunities.
