Authorizing the self : negotiating normality in contemporary American memoir

Leaf, Patricia L. January 2010 (has links)
This study examines the contemporary American memoirs Goat (2004) by Brad Land, Prozac Diary (1998) by Lauren Slater, and The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts (1976) by Maxine Hong Kingston to reveal how these texts push traditional thematic and genre boundaries as well as conceptions of minority identity. Their inclusion of fictional aspects, episodic structure, narrative excesses, and non-teleological endings work to enhance their status as sociocultural critique and protest. This dissertation utilizes a social oppression angle within disability studies to demonstrate the overlapping processes and experiences of marginalization faced by these disparate protagonists who are dis-abled due to their undesired bodily variations and their failure to meet sociocultural standards of appropriate embodied behavior. Society is ideologically unwilling to accommodate or accept the differences the protagonists possess. Such a frame expands the artificial and culturally constructed notion of disability by illustrating the ways that discourse and ideologies of embodied normalcy intersect to constitute various minority identities as incompetent and unworthy. The texts bear witness to each protagonists’ struggle to cultivate meaningful subjectivity and reject passive victim status; however, their resulting survivor subjectivities are both resistant to and complicit with hegemonic tenets. This literary project augments ongoing work in minority, identity, autobiography, cultural, and disability studies that deconstructs essentialist paradigms while reinforcing the important cultural and literary work of contemporary memoir. Moreover, it fills a critical gap with respect to Goat and Prozac Diary, bringing these two texts into the critical discussion of autobiography. Finally, this dissertation illustrates that memoir is uniquely positioned within literary genres to navigate the interconnectedness of identity, subjectivity, and ideology, thus challenging readers to confront the injustice of a sociocultural structure that sanctions these inequities in the first place / Writing a better story : authorizing a vivid and valid self -- Lauren Slater's Prozac diary : the medical model and the suppression of the patient -- Maxine Hong Kingston's The woman warrior : the spectacular subjugation of the dually oppressed and dis-abled body -- The three memoirs : no prosthesis needed. / Writing a better story : authorizing a vivid and valid self -- Lauren Slater's Prozac diary : the medical model and the suppression of the patient -- Maxine Hong Kingston's The woman warrior : the spectacular subjugation of the dually oppressed and dis-abled body -- The three memoirs : no prosthesis needed. / Department of English

"I didn’t see an iPod, but you did – so I’ll say I did, too": exploring source memory and subjective experiences accompanying memory conformity

Azad, Tanjeem 08 February 2010 (has links)
Memory conformity effects occur when witnesses report misleading suggestions they learned about from another witness. Using a new paradigm the present thesis investigated whether what subject-witnesses report about an event also implies what they personally remember or know about that event. Subjects were tested in pairs, with each member of a pair shown a different version of a video using the MORI technique. There were critical details (e.g., theft of an iPod) in each of the following conditions: visible to only one member of each subject spair, visible to both members of the pair, and not visible to either member of the pair. Pairs subsequently completed a questionnaire together to remember details from the video. Subjects then individually completed a similar questionnaire. A source monitoring and subjective experiences test revealed that co-witness discussion does not necessarily lead people to experience illusory recollections for details they did not witness themselves.

[en] SYSTEM FOR CONFORMITY ASSESSMENT OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHS / [pt] SISTEMA PARA AVALIAÇÃO DA CONFORMIDADE DE ELETROCARDIÓGRAFOS

MARCIO CANDIDO DA SILVA 27 October 2008 (has links)
[en] Motivated to contribute with the guarantee of metrological reliability of electrocardiographs, the present work aims at developing a system for conformity assessment of ECGs, based on the IEC 60601-2-51 standard and on the Metrological Recomendation R-90 (1990) of OIML. Since 1995, the standard series IEC 60601 have been used as base to regulate the evaluation of electromedical equipments in Brazil. The IEC 60601-2-51 standard (performance evaluation of electrocardiographs - ECGs) has been published by IEC in 2003 and incorporated by ABNT in 2005, with the denomination ABNT NBR IEC 60601-2-51. To allow the conformity analysis to the applicable standards, the proposed system was structured in two subsystems: subsystem for electric safety evaluation and subsystem for performance evaluation. The system allows to evaluate analogical and digital electrocardiographs without automated measurements, in agreement with the IEC 60601-2- 51 standard. In order to evaluate the system, it was applied on two digital ECGs in use at a public hospital of Rio de Janeiro. Its calibration, with traceability to SI, has been performed at the Metrology Laboratory of the Electronics Material Depot of the Air Force at Rio de Janeiro (PAME-RJ). The tests performed have shown that the system complies with the requirements of the IEC 60601-2-51 standard. The detected limitations, which were characterized in this work, have simple solutions, concerning the common-mode rejection ratio, temperature drift and reticulate of time and amplitude.

Conformité, Originalité et Santé au Travail des Chercheurs Scientifiques / Conformity, Originality and Health at Work of the Scientific Researchers

Guyon, Marc 14 April 2016 (has links)
The clinical investigation of work concerning the activities of researchers reveals suffering linked to the rivalries, to the relationships of domination, to the subjective commitment necessary for the use of the practical intelligence; and the negation of this subjective one. The relation between conformity and originality is addressed by the work of objectification and the thesis of a subjectivity conformed by this work. The scientific practice is approached by the models of the sociology of sciences, themselves discussed from a study case based on an investigation by the method of psychodynamic of work in a scientific institution. From a double discussion, with the sociology of science and the psychodynamic of work, the strategic activity seems to be a large part of the researchers’ one. They are exposed to a suffering that leads them to adopt some objectivistic defenses. The incidences of the evaluation methods on the evolution of researcher’s activity, on the modalities of recognition and on the creativity are analyzed by considering the issue of the health. So we consider the researcher as a collective entity, in a collective unit and with his organization of work.

Heterogeneous implementation of CSR in an MNE : the role of subsidiaries’ institutional contexts and behaviors / Mise en œuvre hétérogène de la RSE dans une multinationale : le rôle des contextes institutionnels et des comportements des filiales

Jacqueminet, Anne 16 June 2015 (has links)
The main objective of this dissertation is to explain heterogeneity in conformity within multinational enterprises (MNEs). More specifically, I focus on what makes an MNE’s subsidiaries implement practices that are consistent with the policy designed by the MNE’s headquarters. Given the increasing normative pressures on MNEs, managing conformity within them is of strategic importance. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an example of such mounting norms. My work relies on a unique set of data (including surveys, archival data and interviews) I collected on CSR practices in one MNE between 2012 and 2014. Overall, the findings of my three essays show that heterogeneous conformity within MNEs stems not only from diverse internal and external pressures exerted on subsidiaries, but also from (1) the subsidiaries’ varying levels of attention to normative demands that depend on peers’ behaviors, (2) their heterogeneous internalization of the Group policy which reduces peers’ and headquarters’ influence and (3) the specific characteristics and institutionalization levels of different practices.

However, small business mortality rates remain high, being recorded that 29% of new businesses go out of business within the first year of activity and 56% close within five years. This study aimed to analyze the situation of micro and small enterprises in the state of Paraiba during the period from 2001 to 2005 by identifying the key factors that influence the vitality these units, their institutional arrangements and the impact of institutional changes on them. The results discussed here allow the inference that the reasons for success or failure reported by small business, the reasons for longevity or premature closure of resides with the manager. The formulation of strategies, due to their own limitations, does not occur in a fully rational manner, and their cognitive abilities, subordinate to personal values, beliefs and interests form the "gap" between their organization´s performance and isomorphic structures. The decisions of the manager outline the "organizational field" of the company and the interpretation of the environment can lead from a condition of conformity, which as response to the environment required by the organizational structure of the business achieves legitimacy, to an unfaithful attitude which may be a reactive mechanism seeking to solve conditions arising from the environment or to find shelter form them, or even the development of a sham in which the response to institutional requirements and pressures of the environment is ritualized and apparent but has at it´s heart the exploitation of inconsistent situations or conflict.

Almeida, Taynná Vernalha Rocha 06 August 2013 (has links)
Introduction: The definition of gross target volume, especially concerning cases of lung cancer, requires the greatest amount of information possible with regard to location, tumor size and tumor mobility. The literature demonstrates an important advancement using metabolic images such as PET/CT, however, its application in radiotherapy planning is still controversial due to its complexity. Objectives: To assess the impact of PET/CT in tumor delineation in cases of non-small cell lung cancer and regional lymph nodes as additional findings. Materials and Methods: Retrospectively studies of PET/CT of 26 lung cancer cases were selected. All were confirmed by biopsy, in its entirety NSCLC. All studies were performed on a PET/CT with dedicated acquisition identical parameters. Image interpretation and subsequent delineation were performed by two experienced physicians, one radiotherapist and the another nuclear/radiologist. The optimal parameters display were pre-defined, being mandatory for the designs. Each case received an identification of three random letters to access the medical images to be analyzed. The delineation was made in two main steps. The first reference to the drawing only in tumor CT and the second, after two weeks of visual rest, referring to the drawing on tumor PET/CT. Only the gross tumor volume (GTV) and regional lymph nodes were enlarged or PET + outlined. Conformity index (CI) were calculated both interobserver (11 cases), and intra-observer (26 cases). For comparison between observers and between designs in relation to the volume, was considered the nonparametric Wilcoxon test. Comparisons regarding the conformity index were made using the Student t test for paired samples. To assess the degree of agreement regarding positive lymph nodes were estimated with kappa coefficients of agreement. In all tests, p values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Data were analyzed with the software SPSS Statistics 17.0 (USA). Results: Data analysis showed significant difference between the average volumes delineated on CT and PET/CT (p = 0.02), with obvious volume reduction. Significant difference between the volumes delineated by CT observars medical distinct classes (p = 0.03) and a tendency to present significant difference between volumes PET / CT (p = 0.05). The intraobserver volumetric evaluation was significant (p <0.001) only for observer 2, being the nuclear medicine physician / radiologist, reducing up to 51% of the volume CT and a relationship between methods of 2.11 ± 0.22. In the analysis of CI, there were no significant differences between the two imaging modalities (p = 0.598).CI analysis showed that intra-observer to observer 1 PET / CT has an impact of 46% (average CI = 0.54 ± 0.06). The viewer 2, the impact was greater, 46% (average IC = 0.39 ± 0.03), representing a difference of opinion regarding the CI (p = 0.03) between the medical classes. To regional lymph nodes with PET/CT revealed an important difference in the visualization of lymph nodes, changing 10 of the 26 cases, 9 to positivity only in the image fusion. Conclusion: PET/CT has a significant impact on the design of the GTV and regional lymph nodes in cases of NSCLC.
