Francisco Mário Ribeiro Castro 31 August 2015 (has links)
Our Lady Consolata Church is the holly place made by Saint Vincents community in Boa Vista city, State of Roraima. This temple, built in 1983, by Consolatas missionaries helped by catholic folk who lives in the district where the church is situated, is the result of the many social cultural and religious processes for what this catholic community has passed by. This temple, considered the holly place, suffered actually a reform and reorganizational process of its space. Such process, besides modifying the ancient architecture of the temple, added new elements and symbols and redimensioned its space by giving to it a new architecture. This work has as objective to analyse this process of reform but mainly to reflect about the meaning of the symbols and icons which were added by the reform process. In this analyses we start from the principle which the temple is the most holly place into the Christian catholic experience and because this such place must have symbol elements for helping the communication between prayer believer and theirs worshipped the divine be. Therefore this reflection will be done by trying to understand the meaning of the geometrycal shapes of the temple and all icons in its interior side such as: Cristo Pantokrator, the cross, the mosaics of the altar and Virgin Consolata icon. To come true the analyses we used the qualitative search methodology by taking as investigative tools such elements: searches in archives and bibliographies, talking groups and interviews. All this search work made us to realize that the composition process of the social group of Saint Vincent Pauls district and of Our Lady Consolata Community were the result from several rights and wrongs that is also the result from exodus process which the people was submited (or submited themselves), printind this way, a particular character in that religious group. Understand itself, therefore, that to create a worship space, was the motivation for fighting for a life space too. And in these experiences the folk was descovering itself , it was raising roots and it was growing up as cultural social and religious group by conquering its territory, identity and suverving. Followed in this perspective, we can say that , in this case, the worship space become itself an essential factor, such as conquests expression as important tool in this historic process, result from their creativity and frequent re-meaning required by the life, maily, for a people which knew re-invent own culture and their symbols.

Fritoli, Clara Landim 26 October 2012 (has links)
In this study, paper samples were produced and naturally exposed to varying temperature and humidity conditions at two university libraries, located in Curitiba (910m a.m.s.l.) and in Caiobá, on the coast of Paraná state. The paper samples were produced with unloaded long-and short-fiber cellulose, without adhesives, in order to facilitate the analysis of the relationship between sample decay rate and natural ageing conditions at both libraries, relative to outdoors. The purpose of the research was to identify which climatic context presents the highest paper preservation potential, by means of the preventive conservation indices PI and TWPI (Preservation Index and the Time Weighted Preservation Index), which quantify the effects of temperature and humidity on paper life expectancy. The samples were placed in naturally ventilated acrylic containers covered with UV film, whose openings were protected with activated charcoal so that temperature and humidity had the major effects on the paper samples. For outdoors, Stevenson screens were used, wherein the acrylic containers were placed. Climatic data were recorded with data loggers and the paper samples were tested with regard to physical and chemical properties before and after a 12and 24 months natural exposure. Results indicate the largest decay rates for the samples with the shortest life expectancy according to PI/TWPI (obtained from ambient temperature and relative humidity) estimates. / 5000

Protest and identity in the context of Sacred spaces: A historical appraisal of three selected sacred sites of the Eastern Free State

Ngobese, Derrick Horecious Dalifa 18 May 2018 (has links)
PhD (African Studies) / Centre for African Studies / Sacred sites are the preferred space for ritual performances and identity construction from which the issue of sensitive structures, distinctive features, individual interpretations, and symbol and meaning emanates. The history and importance of Motouleng, Mautse and Mantsopa caves (Eastern Free State, SA) for different religious persuasions, indigenous knowledge and ancestral veneration of Africans and traditional healers, were investigated apropos of the following: namely, how sacred sites are exemplifications of African indigenous religion; why they form locations of cultural and spiritual expression, and why they may be regarded as pertinent nodes of identity construction in a vibrant, changing, South African society. This study explored the way in which interpersonal experiences of the cave dwellers shape their sense of self, and the conflict they encounter in the context of interaction, in which identities are constructed and deconstructed in various ways. African religion, landscape and social identity theories are the basis of all theoretical claims utilised here. An interpretative phenomenological analysis research method was explored, to provide a detailed personal experience and examination of the participant’s life world on various issues pertaining to contestation and identity construction at the sacred space of the Eastern Free State. The existence of these sites poses a number of challenges to cave dwellers, land owners, heritage practitioners, and to continued preservation, management and restoration of the said sites. Crucial to this debate is how these sites may be protected both physically and legally. The study used qualitative findings to discover new ideas on identity construction and adjunct belief systems. The study also used thematic analysis to evaluate the research findings and make predictions on the effects on protest and contestation by cave dwellers around sacred spaces. / NRF

Re-Use as a Means of Preservation

Farley, Jennifer Lyne 18 August 2011 (has links)
People are often attracted to an image painted for them by history, fiction, and romantic novels. Artists have tried to construct these images for centuries, often exaggerating the past in order to make a more attractive narrative. I propose an architecture that works in the same way. The architect controls the narrative through the preservation and curation of tectonic details. She can create, destroy, or restore an existing building, and by altering the brick pattern, window style or ornament, can create his own version of history. This thesis addresses the image of a post-Civil War industrial site, the Appomattox Iron Works & Supply Co., building, in Petersburg Virginia. By taking advantage of one existing structure, the architect can reinvent the city as a modern destination. By juxtaposing the old, with a new set of residential apartments, the area becomes attractive to those young professionals who want to submerge themselves in the locale of an artistic urban community. / Master of Architecture

Caballero Rubio, Francisco Javier 13 March 2023 (has links)
[EN] The existing Roman fish tanks in the province of Alicante, as is the case with the rest of those scattered along the Mediterranean coast, are one of the examples of cultural heritage that is currently most threatened by the effect of climate change. Through this work, we have tried to document the largest number of existing facilities throughout the Mediterranean, locating them and briefly describing their characteristics. Given that possibly, within a short time, many of them will have been definitively submerged or severely damaged by the effect of rising sea levels and waves. The research began with the study and analysis of the not excessively abundant bibliography on the subject. Thus, it was possible to verify how the rise in sea level, despite being a generalized threat to all these sites, had affected the facilities located in the central area of the northern Mediterranean, mainly on the Italian Tyrrhenian coast, to a greater extent. Through a Research Stay at the Sapienza-Università di Roma, it was possible to visit in situ many of the existing fish tanks on this coast, and document their state of conservation, their physical characteristics, their relationships with the environment and their values. In turn, it was possible to increase the volume of bibliography analyzed, by counting the holdings of various institutions located in Rome, with a much greater number of publications on these facilities. About the four sites detected so far in the province of Alicante, the description made has been much more detailed. The socioeconomic status of the environment has been analyzed, both from the historical moment in which they were built and from the current one, as well as their legal situation. In this way, and knowing the current state of the site, it is possible to address an eventual enhancement that could have a significant impact on the tourist destination. The proposals made for the use and conservation of these elements focus on guaranteeing the legal certainty of heritage assets, establishing criteria and requirements that must be met to carry out the public visit in minimum conditions for the visitor of comfort and quality, and mark the guidelines to follow so that the entire process reaches a successful conclusion. Finally, the possibility of presenting a candidacy for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list has been raised, which would give greater significance to this type of heritage. / Caballero Rubio, FJ. Assessing the state of implementation of the National Archives and Records Management act at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique

Pereira, Renato Augusto 09 1900 (has links)
Archival legislation is a crucial tool for the public sector to ensure the management, preservation and access of a country’s national documentary heritage. In Mozambique, archival legislation has been enacted which sets the scene for records appraisal and disposition, as well as classification schemes and retention schedules for administrative records of governmental bodies falling under the auspices of the Act. As a result, public agencies in Mozambique are required by the archival legislation to adopt a systematic and organized approach to the management of their records from creation to disposal. Despite this, the records management processes of many public entities in Mozambique have remained ineffective and inefficient. This study utilized the record life cycle concept as a framework to assess the state of implementation of the National Archives and Records Management Act at Eduardo Mondlane University (EMU) in Mozambique. The study applied a quantitative research approach with triangulation of data collection tools, namely, questionnaire and document analysis. The study revealed that EMU has only established one central records appraisal and disposal committee for its directorate units, which has not coped with the records management demands from other academic units such as faculties, schools and research centers. In most of the academic units the records management staff were not involved in the training, records appraisal and disposal processes, as well as in the destruction and/or transfer of records to the Mozambique Historical Archives (MHA), as required by legislation. The study concludes that most EMU units do not comply with archival legislation resulting in few provisions of the Act being implemented. The study therefore recommends that the records management function at EMU should put in place the basic procedures of control for records management systems with the leadership taking a proative role in the strategic planning, budgeting and monitoring. A further empirical study on the assessment of the state of implementation of the National Archives and Records Management Act throughout the entire public sector in Mozambique is recommended. / Information Science / M.
