Nerovnosti vnímané studenty-imigranty v Čechách / Perceived Inequalities by Immigrant Students in CzechiaStrnadová, Kristýna January 2018 (has links)
The Diploma thesis presents how teenage students from third countries understand their daily life problems and difficulties which happen to them as a consequence of being a foreigner in a host country. Based on an analysis of ten semi-structural interviews, it is shown that students face several types of problems. The situations mentioned reveal a lack of recognition of their position in the Czech Republic; however, students perceive problems this way rarely. Even though students describe relatively large amount of language and scholastic difficulties, and problems with classmates and unpleasant encounters outside of the school environment, they tend not to see them as inequalities but rather as inevitable situations connected to their status of being a foreigner. They also often understand the problems as individual experiences which do not happen collectively, they see these problems as exceptions and bad luck or as the same problems that Czechs have. Sometimes the problems are seen as inexplicable by the students. Only when an experience is strong enough, they perceive it as a racist behavior or discrimination. Despite the fact that students sometimes demonstrate an inability to react to such behavior, they create several strategies on how to avoid them and how to deal with them. What...

Approach, Adjust or Avoid? : A descriptive case study on how women human rights defenders in Colombia cope with political violenceCarlsson, Karin January 2020 (has links)
Violence targeting politically active women is increasingly researched and recognised as a barrier to gender equal political participation. Previous studies on political violence targeting women have tended to focus on women in formal politics and mostly on the prevalence of violence rather than the impact it has on actors who continue to navigate violent political contexts. This case study uses semi-structured, digital interviews with eighteen Colombian women human rights defenders, focusing on their appraisal of (gendered) political violence and the coping strategies they use to navigate their political space. It finds that both strategies that involve taking up more political space and strategies with a silencing impact are used. For women human rights defenders in Colombia, their geographical conditions and access to resources, especially networks, are important factors to take into account when describing their possibilities to cope with political violence. Their perceptions of where and how gendered political violence occurs indicate that disproportionate impacts of political violence can be underestimated if research and policy does not account for the experiences of different groups of women. The thesis finds that studying lived experiences and micro-level mechanisms can contribute to the literature on macro-level phenomena such as barriers to participation, political violence and marginalisation.

Personality and coping: is there any connection? : A quantitative study about the relationship between The Big Five and coping strategies among university students in Sweden.Björnsson, Emma, Gustavsson, Sabina January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine whether there were any associations between the big five and coping strategies among university students in Sweden, as well as to examine which personality traits that would predict the different coping strategies. By using quantitative method, a survey was constructed and published in various groups on Facebook. The aim of the study was to examine if the five personality dimensions: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness would relate to four selected coping strategies: active coping, denial coping, behavioral disengagement and use of emotional support. We used theories on what influences individuals' choices of coping strategies. The theories contradict each other and therefore we wanted to consider our study as another contribution to the research area, to analyze which theory our study supports. A total of 121 people participated in the study and we analyzed the data through multiple linear regression analyzes, in order to shed a light on which personality traits predicted which coping strategies. Our hypotheses were that extraversion would be associated with high active coping, that neuroticism would be associated with high use of emotional support and low active coping, and that conscientiousness would be associated with high active coping. Through multiple linear regression analyzes, the results of the study showed that the personality traits extraversion, conscientiousness and neuroticism predicted active coping positively. The personality traits extraversion and conscientiousness predicted the denial coping strategy negatively. The personality traits extraversion and conscientiousness predicted behavioral disengagement negatively. The personality traits extraversion and agreeableness predicted use of emotional support positively. We concluded that there was a strong association between the big five personality traits and the four coping strategies.

An assessment of household food security status and food security determinants in Brazzaville informal settlement, PretoriaMkhatshane, Nhlamulo William January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc. (Geography)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / South Africa’s population is more than 60% urbanised. Although food poverty has historically been associated with rural communities, this is no longer the case. With sustained urbanisation, food insecurity is now being experienced in the urban areas as well. The aim of this study was therefore to assess household food security levels and determinants, and to examine household food security coping strategies in Brazzaville informal settlement, Pretoria. The study adopted a quantitative approach which involved the collection of information through a standardised household questionnaire. A statistically representative sample of 95 households participated in the study. Household questionnaires were used to collect information on household demographics, income and expenditure statistics, poverty data as well as household food access issues. In terms of data analysis, the survey used three measures of household food insecurity: a) the Household Food Insecurity Access Prevalence Indicator (HFIAP); b) the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS); and c) the Months of Adequate Household Food Provisioning (MAHFP) measurements of household food access. The survey results indicate that 29.5% of households in Brazzaville informal settlement were food secure and 70.5% food insecure. Contrary to conventional wisdom of female-headed households being the most food insecure, results of this study show that maleheaded households were the most food insecure. In addition, households with low incomes, low level of education, and high unemployment were also likely to be food insecure. The results of the regression analysis suggest that gender, household income, and employment influences household food security. The probability of food security decreases if household is headed by a female, because females can adopt multiple coping strategies. The study concludes that food insecurity coping strategies vary significantly from one household to another according to their expenses, objectives and constrains.

Psychologické souvislosti umírání blízkého člověka u mladých dospělých / Psychological Factors of Dying of a Close Person in Young AdultsPikola, Michal January 2020 (has links)
Almost everybody at some point in life experiences the event of a dying of a close person. It presents the perspective of the end of existence, which is often difficult to relate to. That is understandable, because a living person typically doesn't want to imagine their own death - nonetheless, it seems to be important to be able to accept death and dying as a closing period of life. Theoretical section of the thesis characterizes phenomena of death and dying and their psychological context, as well as e.g. mourning. Next, palliative care is described as a field, which sees death and dying or care for the dying and their close persons respectively as its main area of focus. Lastly, the theoretical section analyzes wellbeing and coping strategies in relation to death and dying as extraordinary situations, in which all sorts of effects and processes occur that influence these psychological characteristics. Empirical section focuses on connecting wellbeing and coping strategies to the process of dying of a close person in young adults. Members of this age group usually already have several distinct experiences with dying and death of a close person, them being relatives or other close persons. Results of the study showed a wide scale of used coping strategies, as well as the fact that circumstances...
