A Systematic Review of the Effects of Postsecondary Education in the Penal System on Recidivism and Incarceration Rates

Munroe, Monekka L. 31 December 2016 (has links)
The problem is Florida is ranked as having the 10th largest incarceration rate in the United States, with a recidivism rate of almost 30%. Therefore, this researcher conducted a systematic review of the literature to determine any benefits to providing college courses to inmates, including the reduction of recidivism. To determine the effectiveness of higher education in prisons, three states that offer higher education options were reviewed. The Campbell Collaboration outlined the framework for the systematic review protocol. Multiple electronic databases were searched for literature including Education Resource Information Clearinghouse (ERIC), Google Scholar, Journal Storage (JSTOR), LesixNexis Academic, National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS), ProQuest, and Psychological Information Database (PsycINFO). In addition, the Campbell Collaboration website was also reviewed to search for additional systematic reviews relating to the availability of postsecondary education opportunities in the prison system. There is growing concern about the problem of mass incarceration in the United States as well as increasing recidivism rates. Although several federal policies have been enacted in an attempt to decrease the number of America’s prison population, the findings revealed that the most cost-effective method is providing inmates with an opportunity to earn a college degree during incarceration. The implications of this research may have an impact on many entities such as legislative and policy measures, availability of economic resources, improved family and community structures, an increase in the number of taxpayers, and the reduction of prison inmates.

Frihetsberövades erfarenheter av isolering samt personalens betydelse : En litteraturstudie / Detained people´s  experiences of isolation and the importance of facility members : A literature study

Eriksson, Emma, Hagström, Evelina January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this essay was to compile science concerning social isolation based on the experiences from people who had been detained, in what ways the social isolation affected an individual and to what extent the facility members mattered concerning the work with clients in social isolation. The method used was a literature study in the form of a scoping review based on seven studies and the theory used was Honneth's theory of recognition. The collected data was processed through a qualitative content analysis which resulted in the four themes social strain, consequences of isolation, dehumanization and treatment. The conclusion based on the essay's purpose was that client's experiences of isolation were negative, with self-harm, neglect and loss of identity. It also stated that the facility memberscould play an important role in terms of understanding concerning the effects the isolation had on an individual. The social aspect remained as a fundamental need even when an individual was detained.

Motivation : Från straff till förändring / Motivation : From punishment to change

Wikström, Peter, Wikner, Caroline January 2023 (has links)
Our study deals with motivating work methods within the Correctional Service based on threedifferent professions; parole officers, correctional officers and study and career guidance counselors. We have learned about the methods used within program structure and what is considered motivatingin a general context. In the results part, we report the empiricism, i.e. the material, that we obtainedfrom our qualitative interviews. The results part is structured by first presenting our empiricism basedon each issue on which we base our study, and then we share our analysis of the material. Thisstructure occurs repeatedly after each question, except for the third question. We have chosen to reportit a little differently, as in that question we tie together the work as a summary of results and analysis, which will provide answers to purpose and research questions. We then conclude our thesis with adiscussion section where we present our conclusion of the study.

Perceived Stress Among Police and Correctional Officers

Hill, Travis D 01 May 2018 (has links) (PDF)
There is no doubt that police and correctional officers face an extraordinary amount of work related stress. The current study hopes to shed additional light on what stressors each profession perceives as being particularly stressful, establish how each profession copes with these stressors, and conclude with what similarities or dissimilarities exist between the two. Officers working for various police and correctional facilities in East Tennessee were surveyed for this study. Independent samples t-test determined that police and correctional officers are similar in many ways. However, correctional officers did reported statistically higher rates of stress associated with organizational aspects of the job (p=.029). Correctional officers and police officers reported identical rates of operational stress, overall stress, and use of coping strategies.

The American and Swedish Criminal Justice System: A Comparative Study

Hedstrom, Josefin 01 May 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Hosting 22 percent of the world’s prison population, the United States is the number one country in the world regarding incarceration rates where 1 in 109 adults are locked up behinds bars and about two-thirds of offenders will recidivate within three years of their release (Durose, Coope, & Snyder, 2014; Kaeble, Glaze, Tsoutis, & Minton, 2016; U.S. Census Bureau, 2015; Walmsley, 2013). Sweden has one of the lowest recidivism and incarceration rates in the world where only 29 percent reoffend and 1 in 2,278 of their total population is behind bars (Kriminalvården, 2017; The World Bank, 2016). The purpose of this study is to understand the underlying reasons to these differences by comparing the U.S. and Swedish criminal justice systems and to find possible solutions of improvement to diminish the incarceration, recidivism, and crime rates in the U.S. Specifically, the policing, court, and correctional systems will be further compared.

Pain in the ass eller samhällets hjälte- En studie om lekmannaövervakares arbete

Fors, Marina, Lindberg Mårtensson, Denise January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore the effects of probation officers and their work. The following questions have been asked to come to a conclusion: How do probation officers view their work and the purpose of it? What are the effects of probation officers work? The approach of the study is of a qualitative nature and has been conducted by interviewing three officers of the correctional service system, three probation officers and two ex-criminals that have been on probation. The selection is based on a snowball type selection. To analyse the results of the study we have applied previous research and phenomenological theory to examine the experience of correctional service officers, probation officers and ex criminals. The results of our empirical study show that motivation is a key factor for successful results of probation officers work. The effects probation officers and their work have on preventing crime are uncertain, but the study shows that the experiences of the work of probation officers are positive and that the work is meaningful to the clients. The supportive and prosocial aspects of probation officers work has been identified as a priority. Our study also shows that the work of probation officers has to change in order to successfully prevent crime and a number of improvements are suggested, such as giving the probation officers specific assignments and giving the probation officers a better education before they are given assignment.
