This work deals with the relation between people and the city of Goiânia at the construction of a social and spatial identity. This geographic identity is based on landscapes, stories, representations of a community about itself and its place. The cultural landscape is, itself, conceived as representation, formed symbolically and, in part, unconsciously. This investigation emphasizes this feature of the goianiense identity, seeking to see it, also, in the metropolitan identity context and the Brazilian cultural identity. Empirical data were collected by interviews, in two previously chosen places of Goiânia, in arder to perceive in the geographical space of the city, in its daily life and in the imaginary, symbolic elements of the culture. The weight of rural aspects on the self-image of local identification and the visibility of the effects of the female prevalence in the demographic structure of the Capital were corroborated. Furthermore, provincial features were revealed beside images of a "Big City". The dialectical method, which understands geographical space as material expression of the social relations, supports this research, in arder to understand the geographic character of a range of symbolic manifestations. The extemality of spatial organization dialogues, thus, with what man, its subject, has as an individual character, and at the same time in its deeper stratums, has as an universal character: his psyche.

Legendary landscapes: a cultural geography of the Paul Bunyan and Blue Ox phenomena of the North woods

Harty, John Patrick January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Geography / Karen J. De Bres / Landscapes express much of who we are. Our history, thoughts, and values are all interwoven into cultural landscape features. By researching the landscape similarities and dissimilarities on the regional level, geographers are able to learn more about a people's identity. Scattered across the vast expanses of the Northwoods, residents and visitors alike are greeted by representations of a lumberjack and his blue ox. In addition to large statues of Paul Bunyan and the Blue Ox, festivals, sporting events, businesses, and public lands are all named in honor of the two folk giants. These features are so prevalent and well known that references to the region by those who live outside the Northwoods often begin by acknowledging the folk heroes. This study explains the relationship between Paul Bunyan and the Northwoods region. Focusing on the area of northern Minnesota between the towns of Bemidji and Brainerd, qualitative research methods were conducted over a four-year period (2004-2007) to better understand the phenomena. Since the 1930s, residents of the Northwoods have used Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox landscape features to celebrate symbolically the region’s golden age of logging. These representations have evolved over the years to include both public and private landscape features. Given the level of permanence of many of the items as well as the authenticity, popularity, and attachment local residents express towards Paul and Babe, cultural landscape features of the lumberjack and his blue ox will continue to be seen as an integral component of the Northwoods regional identity.

Affective Impacts of Tourism in a Post-War, Re-Emerging Destination

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Tourism is not always a lighthearted affair. Visitors are often attracted to places associated with dark and complex pasts, where communities host a wide range of lived experiences, memories and associations. While tourism has potential to facilitate progress and create opportunities, it may also emphasize a place’s hardships or its controversial history. For tourism development to be ethical and sustainable, it is vital to understand its community impacts, including how it may influence residents’ perceptions and wellbeing. This research investigated residents’ senses of affect and emotion within touristic spaces of Mostar, a re-emerging destination city in Bosnia and Herzegovina that experienced some of the worst physical destruction and human casualties during the Bosnian War of the 1990s. An interdisciplinary, multiple-methods approach employed qualitative and quantitative methods, including an intercept survey, resident interviews, participant observation, and autoethnography. In Part 1, construal level theory of psychological distance was applied in quantitative, survey-based research to understand how tourism may impact residents’ affective responses to local places. In Part 2, fourteen young adult residents were invited to experience their city as “tourists for a day,” visiting attractions alongside the researcher and reflecting upon their experiences via a three-stage interview process. The resulting article specifically explores the concept of affective atmospheres, drawing connections to interdependence theory. Part 3 employed a creative and introspective autoethnographic approach incorporating journaling, poetry and photography to examine the researcher’s own experiences and observations as a visiting researcher in a post-war city. This inquiry was inspired by works from cultural geography engaging non-representational theory and affect theory. These three discrete studies under a shared thematic umbrella allowed for an in-depth exploration of affect, emotion, and lived experiences within touristic spaces of a post-war, recovering city. Overall, findings suggest that residents perceive tourism as a generally positive force, fostering senses of pride and creating opportunities for the city to move on from the persistent social and economic repercussions of war. However, the social and affective impacts of war are deeply engrained within the fabric of the city, and tourism has the capacity to emphasize differences and discomforts amongst residents and visitors alike. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Community Resources and Development 2020

A Geographical Study of North Dumfries Township

Beatty Mackenzie, Marilyn 02 1900 (has links)
Features topographic maps and aerial photographs of Dumfires Township /
Bio-physical and cultural geography are two major divisions of this science. A geographical study may be based on one or both of these aspects, discussed systemtically or regionally. The historical factors of a geographical study may be discussed in relation to the present and as an entity in itself.

The following discussion of North Dumfries Township is, for the most part, a regional study of the present physical and cultural relationships, e.specially land use, although a short discussion of the historical geography of the township is included.

Information for the study was gained from various sources. The field work was done in the fall of 1957 and involved a series of traverses through the township and numerous interviews with farmers and townsfolk. References were made to a number of books and pamphlets, listed in the bibliography, and to aerial photographs and topographic maps of the township.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Arts (BA)

A Lost Cause Found: Vestiges of Old South Memory in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

Bohland, Jon Donald 09 November 2006 (has links)
This dissertation examines issues of neo-Confederate collective memory, heritage, and geographical imagination within the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I analyze a whole range of material cultural practices throughout the entire region centered on the memory of the Civil War including monuments, battlefields, museum exhibits, burial rituals, historical reenactments, paintings, and dramatic performances. These mnemonic sites and rituals throughout the Great Valley of Virginia serve to circulate a dominant and mythologized reading of the Civil War past, one that emphasizes the Lost Cause myth of the Confederacy. In addition to uncovering neo-Confederate forms of memorialization, I also examine how normative lessons of morality, honor, patriotism, masculinity, and hyper-militarism become naturalized as a result of Lost Cause remembrance. The dissertation combines qualitative, practice-based modes of research with a Foucauldian influenced archival methodology that attempts to uncover particular silenced and alternative versions of the past that do not fit with normative version of heritage. / Ph. "Almost islands": A research synthesis of Aboriginal communities in Canada as metaphorical islands

Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to describe the geographic distribution of Aboriginal people who live in remote, isolated Aboriginal communities in Canada in terms of how geographic settings and features, particularly those that are characteristic of island dwellers, are related to and can impact aspects of culture and identity. Through this process, data was collected using a research synthesis, which allowed for a great deal of data from various sources to be analyzed, extracted, and coded. Based on this qualitative study, numerous geographic characteristics similar to those of islanders and islands emerged. Physically, islands and Aboriginal communities represent bounded, finite spaces that are located on the periphery and are impacted by isolation. These unique isolated areas allow for islanders and Aboriginal people to experience ethnic homogeneity and strong attachments to place, both of which allow for the preservation of culture and identity. That being said, islanders and Aboriginal people both experience migration as a way of life, and leaving their places of origin to experience life in larger, more diversely and densely populated areas is necessary for many. As a result of these findings, this study compares isolated Aboriginal communities in Canada and Aboriginal people to various small islands around the world as well as islanders, through various spatial metaphors.
