Home Away from Home : A comparative study on identity, collective memory and integration with first and second-generation Assyrians in Sweden / Hemma hemifrån : En jämförande studie om identitet, kollektivt minne och integration med första och andra generationens assyrier i Sverige

Hermez, Maria, Al-Taji, Biblina January 2022 (has links)
This study is about the first and second generation Assyrians in Sweden. It aims to understand what shapes their identity, and how they integrate in their host country Sweden. Previous studies have looked into the transformation of ethnic identity and integration of Assyrians in Sweden and the role that the collective memory plays. While these studies provided a good framework they have some limitations. Firstly they are not in English so do not have as much reach globally and there was no distinct comparison of first and second generation Assyrians. Lastly, there have been no contemporary studies conducted, considering the growth of the diaspora it is important to come back to these questions. It is the hope that our research can start to bridge the gap that is left from these limitations, thus providing the rationale for our study. By using different theories on ethnic, indigenous and situational identity, the impact of cultural trauma and the process of acculturation, we drafted a set of interview questions for each theory. Based on the empirical data collected from the interviews, we argue that first and second generation Assyrians both agree that they have multiple identities but that their Assyrian identity is the most important for them. Secondly, we argue that the collective memory is still very prevalent in the consciousness of these individuals but that it is more palpable in the first generation rather than the second because of their personal experiences linking the past to the present. The second generation are more removed from the trauma related to the collective memory as they themselves make their own identity and rituals in a new context that is Sweden by integrating both cultures they grew up in. And lastly, we argue that the collective memory is a driving factor for integration in Sweden for both first and second generation Assyrians as they appreciate greater freedoms and rights despite being an indigenous ethnic and religious minority.

Forced assimilation of Indigenous children: The case of the Danish-Greenlandic experiment

Høeg, Kirstine January 2019 (has links)
This thesis examines personal consequences of forced assimilation in relation to identity and belonging of 22 Greenlandic children who were sent to Denmark to participate in a ‘social experiment’ in the beginning of the 1950’s. By adopting a social psychological approach, the theoretical framework of intergroup identification and cultural trauma theories has been applied to the experiences of the children as accounted in the two books ‘For Flid og God Opførsel’ by Thiesen(2011) and ‘I den bedste mening’ by Bryld(1998). Findings of the analysis show issues of identity division and confusion, lack of belonging and severe hurt caused by forced assimilation in childhood. Furthermore, elements of cultural trauma theories such as contemporary consequences, trauma as a structural process and intergenerational effects are identified in the narratives. The thesis speaks to the larger case of Danish colonialism in Greenland and contributes to the academic field of forced assimilation of Indigenous children.

Polish Collective Memory, The Jedwabne Pogrom inPolish Newspapers 2016-2018 / Polskt kollektivt minne, Jedwabne-pogromen i polska tidningar 2016–2018

Repelewicz, Radoslaw January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the Cultural Trauma associated with the Jedwabne pogrom, as portrayed in three Polish newspapers. The essay seeks to answer the following questions: How did the chosen three Polish newspapers with varying ideological and political views depict the discussion about the Jedwabne pogrom in their articles in the years 2016-2018? In what ways do these usages and representations reflect or challenge the dominant narratives of Polish national mythology? How has the discussion on Polish antisemitism in relation to the Jedwabne pogrom changed after the conservative Law and Justice party came to power in 2015? The source material used consists of 45 newspaper pieces from Gazeta Wyborcza, Tygodnik Powszechny, and Polonia Christianapublished between 2016-2018. The theory applied was inspired by Barbara Törnquist-Plewa's studies which originate from the theory of Cultural Trauma and Collective Memory and Geneviève Zubrzycki's theory of National Mythology. The method used to analyze the source material could be best described as a qualitative close reading of the sources, where the theory of cultural trauma with its associated diagnosed coping strategies and the perspective of national mythology is used as an analytical lens to highlight how the Jedwabne pogrom discourse is being portrayed intertextually. The study's results found two camps with different stances on the topic concerning the Jedwabne pogrom and Polish antisemitism, namely, the pro-Gross/identity-transformative camp and the anti-Gross/Gross-skeptical camp. The presented two camps used two different strategies concerning the pogrom debate, namely, the politics of shame and the politics of pride, which suggested a laboriously political state of the discourse in the years 2016-2018. The resulting politicization of these two political strategies was explained by their link to cultural trauma responses used by the camps conforming to Törnquist-Plewa's results. The study found that the national myth of Polish messianism was used in the source material. However, it was predominantly used mindfully by the newspaper's authors in an attempt to combat this national myth, which was tied to a cultural trauma response and political usage. The study found that the debate on Polish antisemitism tied to the Jedwabne pogrom has regressed after the Law and Justice party came to power in 2015, as their political meddling with state institutions sabotaged the Polish scholarly debate and effectively polluted the public debate in various scandals

Let the great world spin, de Colum McCann: superando um trauma? / \"Let the Great World Spin\" by Colum McCann: a working through trauma?

Coelho, Maria do Rosario Casas 22 October 2015 (has links)
A presente dissertação tem por objetivo compreender de que maneira se dá a representação do trauma em Let the Great World Spin (2009), do premiado autor irlandês, Colum McCann. / This dissertation is concerned with the representation of trauma in the award-winning celebrated Irish writer Colum McCann\'s novel, Let the Great World Spin (2009). The novel was written about the terrorist attacks of 9/11, in New York. Although the event is never directly mentioned within the text. My analysis took account of some statements made by the author to the effect that no matter what he writes about, he is always talking about Ireland. This creates the need to find common traumas between Ireland and the United States. For this reason, the topics of \'migration\' and \'family\' are part of this dissertation, as emigration impacted enormously on the compostion of the Irish family. Moreover, setting the novel in New York, on 7 August, 1974, suggests a temporal distancing in which commonalities between 1974 and 2001 are highlighted in the novel. The presence of the French artist, Philippe Petit, who walked in a tightrope between the Twin Towers, as a reference to the biggest artistic crime of the 20th Century, establishes the metaphorical link to what may be understood as the most savage terrorist act of the 21st Century. Scholars such as Sztompka, Versluys, Smelser and Gibbs were highly useful to the development of the analysis of the trauma portrayed in Colum McCann\'s text. The novel provides a polyphony of narrative voices, which assist the author to avoid stereotyping the characters.

The dominant view of legal ethics as an obstacle for the construction of a cultural trauma and as a cause of an individual trauma / La visión dominante de la ética profesional del abogado como obstáculo a la construcción de un trauma cultural y como causa de un trauma individual

Anzola Rodríguez, Sergio 10 April 2018 (has links)
Law and psychoanalysis are disciplines that address different questions and have different purposes. However efforts have been made to find some spaces for interdisciplinarity. One of these efforts has been to use judicial proceedings as places in which individual traumas can be transformed into cultural and social traumas. This article aims to show the risks and pitfalls of this enterprise by using a real life example. The purpose is to show how law can fail on this purpose and turn itself instead into a place for revictimization. In this latter scenario the role of lawyers and their professional duties play a key role.

Documentary as a Medium to Advance a Public Apology to Comfort Women in a Transitional Justice Context

Wang, Jenny January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores how the documentary film The Apology (as a medium) and its filmmaker (as a carrier group) functions as connection points between cultural trauma and transitional justice reparations driving social change. Earlier approaches to bringing justice to comfort women have been based on legal frameworks which this thesis considers restrictive and instead examines justice and reparations from a victim-centred perspective. To dig for details about how the protagonists' and the filmmaker understand justice, this thesis conducted a narrative analysis of the documentary film The Apology and an interview with the film director. Connecting theories from cultural trauma and transitional justice, the findings show a lack of higher levels of participation of the comfort women in designing and implementing justice and reparation programmes. The documentary produced new master narratives that facilitated the comfort women’s identity shift from passive receivers to active seekers of justice and reparations. This thesis concludes that carrier groups are humane agents with the ability to create powerful influencing narratives to support collective identity shaping, awareness raising, and push for social change and government actions. Finally, an effective public apology must be victim-centred and truthful. Otherwise, it risks remaining as a nice-looking political gesture to deceive the public.

Vad det innebär att vara en rysk HBTQemigranti tider av död och förstörelse : - En fenomenologisk studie av ryska HBTQ-emigranters levdaerfarenheter i ljuset av Rysslands invasionen av Ukraina 2022

Andersson, Andreas January 2023 (has links)
This study examines what it means to be a Russian LGBTQ emigrant in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The study follows a phenomenological research approach that differs from the commonly used scientific approach that strives for objective knowledge. Through a qualitative study consisting of 5 participants who identify themselves as Russian LGBTQ emigrants, this research examines findings via affect theory, queer theory, and theories of social and cultural trauma to ask what it means to be a Russian LGBTQ emigrant, how the LGBTQ emigrant is constructed, and how the construct of being a Russian LGBTQ emigrant affects the subject. The study shows how the meaning of being a Russian LGBTQ emigrant is constructed through the effects of affect and how these effects create a collective, social, and cultural trauma that manifests in their everyday lived experiences while shaping their prospects for the future. /
2023-09-14
