Delinquent gangs in context : towards an ecology of meaningVenter, Anneri 03 1900 (has links)
Gangs exist as metaphors of the societies in which they are embedded and are powerful, hence the need is great for an ecologically powerful model and a collation of a picture about gangs and gang life as described by knowledgeable individuals. With so much literature and knowledgeable individuals at hand to provide insight into the problem, the rationale for this study comes forth in the form of taking all this knowledge and insight and creating a collation of a picture of gangs as it is understood by those who study them and by those who have been confronted with them.
The theoretical framework is a social constructionist cybernetic epistemology. One-on-one interviews were conducted with knowledgeable sources and audio-visual material assisted in understanding the context of gangs better. A hermeneutic analysis was used.
The interview transcripts from the participants were analysed and themed according to a thematic network analysis and linked with available literature. These themes were then used to represent a Time Cable of gangs. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Chronic headache : an ecosystemic explorationRawsthorne, Julie Karen 12 1900 (has links)
Chronic headache may be the most frequently reported
somatic symptom, yet it puzzles health experts and poses a
considerable treatment challenge. It was suggested that this
is because conventional views of headache, adhering to a
Newtonian-Cartesian epistemology, focus almost exclusively on
intrapsychic factors ignoring the wider social context in which
the problem is embedded. An overview of the existing body of
knowledge on the most widely researched headache conditions was
presented, and it was argued that a conceptual shift is
required to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the
problem.
This study was conducted within an holistic, ecosystemic
epistemology. A qualitative approach employing a case study
method was adopted to provide rich descriptions of the contexts
in which two chronic headache sufferers' symptoms were
embedded. The case study presentations also illustrated the
attempts that were made to intervene into the headache contexts
from a second-order cybernetics stance. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Irreverence : a psychotherapeutic stanceVan Rooyen, Hanlie 07 1900 (has links)
The development of the concept of irreverence is examined in terms
of its historical, theoretical and metatheoretical contexts. The underlying
assumptions of the concepts of neutrality, curiosity, and irreverence are
distinguished and contextualised. Neutrality is discussed with reference to
Milan systemic therapy and first- and second-order cybernetics, while
curiosity is examined in the light of constructivist and narrative approaches
to psychotherapy. It is argued that these two concepts represent two sides
of a dualism, which is transcended through irreverence. Irreverence is
interpreted as a postmodern stance, involving the questioning and
relativising of therapists' basic assumptions. The pragmatic components of
an irreverent stance, namely self-reflexivity, orthogonality, flexibility and
accountability, are explored with reference to related concepts in the work
of other authors. Throughout the text metalogues are used in an attempt to
engage reader and author in a collaborative enterprise of acknowledging
and reevaluating their own basic assumptions. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Sociokybernetika a její aplikace v analýze organizace / The application of Sociocybernetics in Organizational AnalysisMalinová, Ludmila January 2010 (has links)
Diploma thesis focuses on clarifying of sociocybernetics principles and its connection to other sciences. It refers to possible approach to information, knowledge, systems. Further, it appeals to individuals in terms of social system and their values, abstract reality perception, utilization of feedback, autopoiesis (self-organization) and many others. Theoretical frame offers to reader awareness about this topic. Practical part points out possible application of this concept along complex organization analysis. Results of analysis refer to bottlenecks and possible improvements, in terms of sociocybernetics principles and methods.

World Management : The case of the Lord of Hosts ChurchMadeland, Jonathan January 2021 (has links)
Bringing together current research strands stemming from the Festinger tradition of failed prophecy, and by observing a recent case of a prophetic group dealing with disconfirming events under a period of 210 days, I theorize on what roles cognitive dissonance, rituals and continuous prophetic adaptation play in the management of prophetic groups’ alternative world views. The traditional conception of dissonance management is reinterpreted as a process of maximizing mental desirability, which is contingent on the level of cognitive dissonance as well as cognitive activity. Through the use of rituals, prophetic groups maintain a certain mental network of categories (world) that invalidates the judgement standards of the mainstream society in favor of the prophet. Finally, prophecy itself is considered to be a device that regulates the collective level of cognitive dissonance and activity in order to maintain an ideal state of collective mental desirability; it is a tool to organize the present, rather than a prediction to be judged based on its accuracy. This sociological study is an assessment of the research on prophecy stemming from Festinger and makes the contribution of synthesizing it under the single logic of world management through the study of an empirical case.

Between a baby and a boardroom : social constructions of mothers' employment decisionsVan Beek, Liezel 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English, isiZulu and Afrikaans / The topic of work-life balance has gained much attention in recent years. A focal point
remains the effects of maternal employment on the well-being of women and children, despite shifts
in society towards gender equality. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of mothers
who either had chosen to stay at home after having children or to continue with full-time
employment; and how their decision impacted their lives. This qualitative study, based on the Social
Constructionist paradigm, and Second Order Cybernetics and Feminist Theories, included interviews
with four full-time employed and four stay-at-home South African mothers. The data were analysed
using hermeneutic analysis. The findings suggest that the participants’ tensions regarding
motherhood and employment were strongly influenced by structural obstacles at work and at home,
interpersonal relationships with other mothers, as well as intrapersonal experiences. Breastfeeding
was identified as a prominent topic within the various themes. / Eminyakeni yamuva nje ukulinganisela phakathi komsebenzi nokuphila kwasekhaya kube

raak. Die lewende sisteem en die kenmerke van outonomie, outopo"ise, organisasie en

evolueer 'n proses waar binne realiteite geskep word, konsensus binne die sisteem

constructivism. The principles of reductionism, neutrality and linear causality on which
Newtonian thinking is grounded are compared with circular processes and non
objectivity of interrelated elements that are to be found in living systems.
The differences in assumptions of personnel in a welfare organisation are investigated
through observation of changing processes of thinking that evolved over a period of
time. The process of change is discussed by way of a case study.
Recognition is given to the systemic orientation where the interactive interrelatedness
of elements within the system evolved within changing patterns of thinking. The living
system and characteristics of autonomy, autopoiesis, organisation and structure are
discussed from a philosophy of constructivism. From this philosophy evolved a process
in which realities were created, consensus was reached within the system, and the
organisation of the living system was reflected. / Social Work / M.A. (Sosiale Wetenskappe(Geestesgesondheid))
