Microprocessor power management and a stand-alone benchmarking application for Android based platforms

Yeager, Hans L. 19 January 2012 (has links)
Components used in mobile hand-held devices (smart phones and tablets) vary greatly in performance and power consumption. The microprocessors used in these devices also have vastly different capabilities and manufacturing limitations leading to significant variation effects. Battery life is a significant concern to the end users of these products. A stand-alone Android application capable of benchmarking a device's performance and power consumption is introduced. The application does not require the end user to have any analytic equipment or to have a technical background. This enables individual end users to better understand their particular device's performance and battery life interaction. They may also use the application to determine if their device's performance or battery life has degraded over time. Data is also uploaded to a central location so that devices can be compared against each other. The benchmarking application is capable of resolving variation effects caused by device, environmental changes and power management actions. This application demonstrates the feasibility of creating a low cost ecosystem where thousands of devices can be quantitatively compared. / text

As Information Society is rapidly developing, technological conquests in computer science and telecommunications are becoming a very important part in many areas of social life, including Culture. The diversity of the cultural material and the intention of utilizing the added educational value, combined with the demand for preservation of the original works, compose a complex technological problem with legal and social extensions. The inspiration and creativity of the artists are expressed by Intellectual Property Rights – IPR, the protection and management of which is the subject of this thesis. The set of rights as well as the way they are specified, rised, binded and assigned changes while we pass from the analog to the materialess digital display. In this thesis we define the several types of Intellectual Property Rights and clarify the engagements and restrictions that result from them in connection with the International, European and National legislation. We also define the process that an entity (usually a cultural organization) must follow in order to clear the rights of the works it owns, during a digitization process which will lead to publication on the Internet. In the second part we study the technological solutions that can be used for the protection of IPR in parallel with a suitable metadata set. A special part of the thesis is the study of Digital Rights Management Systems – DRMs. We analytically present the standards on which modern DRMs must be based on in terms of identification and declaration of digital resources, as well as the representation of rights through rights expression languages. Finally we present the architecture, basic functionality and realization of a new Digital Rights Management System for digital images.

Teisinių ir techninių intelektinės nuosavybės apsaugos formų suderinimas / The compatibility of legal and technical protection measures of intelectual property

Meizeraitis, Mantas 06 February 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Master Paperwork thoroughly overviews technical protection measures of intellectual property and various classifications of them and determines the main differentiation in this work context – i.e. classification to active and passive technical protection measures. This paperwork also deeply analyses legal protection mechanisms of technical protection measures, starting WIPO Copyright, Phonogram producers and broadcasters treaties of year 1996, continuing to European Union directive on the harmonization of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society of year 2001 and finishing the analysis of the national legal regulations of different world countries, including Lithuania. Under the basis of the analysis of the legal information, the author reveals harmonized and incompatible areas between legal protection of intellectual property and technological protection measures and concludes that the legal protection mechanism, which was chosen to regulate the usage and other related actions of technological protection measures, was not correct and did not serve the purpose, because many countries diversely and without seeking primary goals of WIPO treaties interpreted and implemented the provisions of the legal protection of technological protection measures. The practical survey of the situation reveals negative opinion of society, scholars and justice institutions concerning the chosen legal protection model and concerning the usage of technological... Influence of Fenugreek gum on bread and in vitro physiological effects

Roberts, Keisha 18 May 2012 (has links)
ABSTRACT Influence of fenugreek gum on bread and in vitro physiological effects Keisha T. Roberts Advisors: University of Guelph Dr. S.W. Cui Professor T.E. Graham This thesis examined the effect of fenugreek gum, from Canadian grown fenugreek on bread quality, when substituted for wheat flour at 5 % and 10 %, and the in vitro physiological effects of these breads, based on models of acute and long - term feeding. Study I determined bread could be produced with 10 % fenugreek gum, while maintaining quality parameters of volume and texture, comparable to a control. This was accomplished through the development of a novel bread production method, using the lamination procedure for puff pastry production. The behavior of fenugreek gum and starch (wheat flour) was determined by rapid visco analysis (RVA), farinograph and dynamic rheological measurement, while scanning electron microscopy of bread found fenugreek gum could be identified within the bread matrix. Study 2 in vitro starch digestion found fenugreek gum at 5 % and 10 % reduced glucose liberated from bread, with 10 % fenugreek gum causing a reduction of over 30 %. RVA of fenugreek breads highlighted differences in viscosity between breads and wheat flour substituted with the gum. This was substantial as viscosity measurements by RVA are conducted on raw ingredients and not the food as consumed, which reflects the possible reduction in viscosity with food processing. This study also determined extruding fenugreek gum may have caused morphological changes to the gum, which may possibly contribute to attenuation of glucose liberated in vitro. Study 3 evaluated the accumulation of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) from the fermentation of three substrates: Extruded fenugreek gum, bread with 10 % extruded gum and control bread, based on fecal microbiota from three donors. SCFA profiles varied with substrates and donors, with fenugreek gum having the highest accumulation of SCFA after 12 hours. Donors were a caucuasian Canadian, a black Jamaican and a black Trinidadian who was the only donor culturally exposed to fenugreek. This Trinidadian’s SCFA profiles were consistently higher for fenugreek gum than the other donors. These studies collectively showed fenugreek gum, though viscous could be successfully incorporated into bread and have potential as a functional food and nutraceutical.

Elektronické knihy na VŠE / Electronic books at VŠE

Saska, Filip January 2012 (has links)
The master dissertation Electronic books at VSE is focused on analysing the opportunities of e-books in the environment of VSE. The aim is to describe the current state of different study materials used at VSE and to explore different ways of improving them using e-book technology. The dissertation briefly describes various attributes of e-books with stress on the relevant attributes -- the possibility of inserting notes, bookmarks, multimedia and interactive content. Also the possibility of editing the content and sharing resulting changes with other students is a key attribute. The dissertation then moves on to describe the different kinds of study materials that are in use at VSE. The second half of the dissertation builds on previous analysis of the study materials and introduces a hypothetical optimal state, which could result from implementing e-book technology. This state is the answers the question of what is actually possible to achieve. The next chapter in this half is the technical analysis, which answers the question of how is it possible to achieve the suggested hypothetical state. The conclusion of this dissertation answers the questions whether the proposed solution is a viable candidate for implementation. The results of this dissertation could be used as a guideline for the project of implementation of e-book technology in the environment of VSE.

Adaptive Memory and Social Influences

Leedy, Aaron D. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Recently, cognitive psychologists have focused their research on the survival aspects of human memory, showing advantages for remembering information encoded for adaptive qualities. When participants rated words related to survival relevance (stranded in grasslands), Nairne et al. (2007) and others found survival processing’s retention superior to many semantic encoding techniques, however, we questioned the global application of survival processing. In the present adaptive memory experiment we used the thematic word list paradigm pioneered by Deese, Rodeiger and McDermott, allowing us to measure false recall of critical items from sets of word lists. To investigate recall differences based on the material type encoded, we separated recalled material into two categories: survival and non-survival. Because arousal can influence memory performance, we extended research on adaptive memory to include social arousal induced by videotaping participants during study and recall tasks. Videotaping subjects has been shown to induce arousal levels similar to those when being observed, and may parallel arousal experienced in survival scenarios. Overall, recall was lower for survival processing. Survival-relevant information was more accurately remembered, and was not hindered by camera presence, unlike non-survival information. Additionally, false memories were higher under videotaped conditions. While our results did not support Nairne and colleagues, our findings may support the development of evolved brain mechanisms. The current findings are discussed with an emphasis on contemporary high arousal situations that may influence the activation of adaptive memories. We join a growing set of literature that questions the overall benefits of survival processing.

Chromosome-Biased Binding and Function of C. elegans DRM Complex, and Its Role in Germline Sex-Silencing: A Dissertation

Tabuchi, Tomoko M. 21 July 2011 (has links)
DRM is a conserved transcription factor complex that includes E2F/DP and pRB family proteins and plays important roles in the cell cycle and cancer. Recent work has unveiled a new aspect of DRM function in regulating genes involved in development and differentiation. These studies, however, were performed with cultured cells and a genome-wide study involving intact organisms undergoing active proliferation and differentiation was lacking. Our goal was to extend the knowledge of the role of DRM in gene regulation through development and in multiple tissues. To accomplish this, we employed genomic approaches to determine genome-wide targets of DRM using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system. In this dissertation, I focus on the DRM component LIN-54 since it was proposed to exhibit DNA-binding activity. First, we confirmed the DNA-binding activity of C.elegans LIN-54 in vivo, and showed it is essential to recruit the DRM complex to its target genes. Next, chromatin immunoprecipitation and gene expression profiling revealed that LIN-54 controls transcription of genes implicated in cell division, development and reproduction. This work identified an interesting contrast in DRM function in soma vs. germline: DRM promotes transcription of germline-specific genes in the germline, but prevents their ectopic expression in the soma. Furthermore, we discovered a novel characteristic of DRM, sex chromosome-biased binding and function. We demonstrated that C. elegans DRM preferentially binds autosomes, yet regulates X-chromosome silencing by counteracting the H3K36 histone methyltransferase MES-4. By using genomics, cytology, and genetics, we defined DRM as an important player in the regulation of germline X-chromosome gene expression, and addressed molecular mechanisms vii behind the antagonistic interactions between DRM and MES-4. I present a model to explain the interplay of DRM and MES-4, and propose a novel function of DRM and MES-4 in maintaining proper chromosome gene expression dosage. This work extends our knowledge of the conserved roles of DRM in development, and provides a new view of differing DRM functions in soma versus germline. Furthermore, we defined a novel chromosome-specific aspect of DRM-mediated regulation.

DRAWN TO LIFE: Exploring real-time manipulation of the digitally represented surface in comics on smartphones and tablets

Ericsson Duffy, Mikael January 2013 (has links)
This research thesis is an exploration into what possibilities lie beyond the representation of analog material when it transcends into the digital realm. Specifically, how printed comics can be altered in realtime by creator- allowed user interaction, when adapted for presentation within the digital sphere of mobile smartphones and computer tablets. Using legacy computer-game techniques like parallax scrolling with modern digital layer filters, device sensors and applying them in realtime to the comic creators digitally layered content, alternative forms of presentation arise. This is an investigation into the comic creator’s will of allowing possibilities of added depth perception, interactivity and alternative visual narratives in their comic, manga or graphic novels when employing new techniques based on sensor data input from a reader, like accelerometer-, gyroscope- or eye-tracking sensors. Several different techniques are evaluated. The focus is mainly on the context of creators of comics or manga who use digital tools and layer compositions when producing their work. Several aspects of the user-centered experience are also explored.Although mainly an interaction design project, most of the design methods are used from a service design approach, emphasizing co-design techniques like interviews, observations and user tests. The results are digital prototypes and proof-of-concepts featuring technology tests that support final design conclusions. The results will show both enthusiasm and reluctance from test subjects towards the new technologies presented. The professional craft of comic, manga and graphic novel creation has a deeply rooted aesthetic and production cycle in its history of the printed form. It could be difficult to alter its standard, reverence and nostalgia in the eyes of its readers and creators, when pursuing the digital format and narrative possibilities of the future. A video explaining the project’s “Drawn To Life” technology is available online.
