Audiovisual translation : subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing

Neves, Josélia January 2004 (has links)
A study of subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH) with special reference to the Portuguese context. On the one hand it accounts for a descriptive analysis of SDH in various European countires with the aim of arriving at the norms that govern present practices and that may be found in the form of guidelines and / or in actual subtitled products. On the other hand, it is the result of an Action Research project that aimed at contributing towards the improvement of SDH practices in Portugal. These two lines of research are brought together in the proposal of a set of guidlines -Sistema de legendagem vkv - for the provision of SDH on Portuguese television. This research positions itself within the tradition of Translation Studies (TS) by taking a descriptive approach to its subject. Nonetheless it takes a step beyond to seek reasons and to propose change rather then simply to describe objects and actions. Given its topic and methodological approach, this research also drank for other fields of knowledge, such as Deaf Studies, Sociology, Linguistics and Cinema Studies, amongst others. In this contect SDH is addresssed as a service to Deaf and Hard - of - Hearing viewers, thus implying a functional approach to all that it entails. In order to arrive at an emcompassing understanding of the subject, in the body of this work we may find a summary of the history of SDH as well as an overview of the overriding and specific issues that characterise this type of subtitling. Following this, the Portuguese situation is made known through the account of five case studies that were carried out in the course of 2002 and 2003. In response to the needs and requirements of Portuguese Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing viewers, the proposed set of guidelines is based on the special concern for adequacy and readability and is envisaged as a useful tool for students and practitioners of SDH.

A Framework for Studying the Physical Degradation Characteristics of DVDs and Their Relationship to Digital Errors

Saville, Brian K. 09 December 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The methods used to store data on DVD-R discs have been proven to work over the last 15 years. However, there has been a growing concern that these discs will be outlasted by the paper records they were meant to replace. The data on a DVD-R is stored as optical contrasts which have the potential to be misread and even damaged. This damage may occur either on the surface or internally to the disc, especially on the recording layer itself. The literature is saturated with studies attempting to determine the time period in which discs may fail and what the general signs of the degradation are, but almost all fail to determine the fundamental causes of DVD degradation. In particular, the exact connection between the physical state of the disc and its digital errors is undetermined. This study undertook to develop a framework to study and understand this relationship. The study also consisted of a characterization validation experiment involving several brands of DVD-Rs. The framework constructed during the course of the research included several tools. Due to the lack of an existing tool able to aggregate the gathered data, a specialized software program, called SectorDraw, was developed. In the course of this study, this software tool was validated. Additionally, it was discovered that physical defects should be evaluated and characterized by using a process of visual inspection, microscope examination, and measurements. Although not all relationships between physical defects and digital errors were explored, the study established the fact that defects can directly cause bursts of digital errors. This indicated that there was a connection between physical defects and digital errors. It was also found that physical defects developed over time after treatments of artificial aging. The developed framework was established as viable for future research to study specific relationships between physical defects and digital errors.

Video på universitetsbibliotek : En studie kring kvalitet och urval / Videos in university libraries : A study of quality and selection

Hägerdal, Måns January 2022 (has links)
This thesis concerns the subject of videos in libraries, with a special focus on university libraries. The problem statement concerns that videos as a library resource have been far less studied than books. Also, videos in university libraries have been less studied than in public libraries. There is also a need for further investigation of how libraries define the concept of quality, and how this issue affects their acquisition decisions. The purpose of the thesis s to investigate how university libraries prioritize in their selection of videos. Three research questions are posed. The first question relates to aspects of quality. The second question concerns the aspects of education and entertainment. The third question concerns the view of physical and digital formats of videos. The main source of theory is Johannsen (1996), who discusses five certain views of quality. The main method used is semi-structured interviews, conducted at two Swedish universities: Lund University and Malmö University. The selected libraries all had (mostly physical) videos in their collections, according to the universities’ library catalogues. The results show that various factors, both subjective and objective, affect university libraries’ selection of videos. Overall, it seems clear that no single rule or definition of quality is enough. One main conclusion is that the quality of a video never can be judged entirely objectively. Libraries will have to make a judgement call, or leave this judgment at least partly to their users.

No. of bitstreams: 1 imagem.pdf: 3526629 bytes, checksum: 2b8ae7994cf555fe9618160e1573cba8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-06-05 / The images (painting, photograph, cinema, etc.) had always been constructed for specific ends and through the mediation between us (spectators) and the reality, it was possible to represent the world that surrounded us. With the arrival of the graphical computation and new digital formats, the image acquires new abilities. To argue the properties and trends of the digital image are extremely excellent aspects for the development of new systems, processes and theories in communication. When it is conceived and allied to the interface concept, this image can be transformed into image-interface, thus multiplying, its characteristics and potentialities. A good platform to think the digital medias as inhabitable medias and the parameters to argue the transformation of the image in image interface is the digital video disc, because it possess technical characteristics witch allows the mapping of information and the storage of great amount of data. The objective of this research is to argue and apply the image-interface concepts, elaborated mainly by Peter Weibel, Lev Manovich and Mark Hansen, in the DVDs and the new formats of the digital communication like the Internet and electronic panels. The interfaces analysis of commercial and experimental DVDs and DVD Roms will allow to understand the current limitations in the interfaces´exploration and argue if it is possible to extend its resources and to use these concepts in the scope of a market culture, which a media quickly is substituted by another one before they deplete its possibilities / As imagens (pintura, fotografia, cinema, etc.) sempre foram construídas para fins específicos e através da mediação entre nós (espectadores) e a realidade, foi possível representar o mundo que nos cercava.

Le DVD et la transformation des séries TV en oeuvres : le cas de la réception des séries TV d'animation japonaise en Europe / The DVD and the transformation of TV series into collectibles : the case of the reception of Japanese animated TV series in Europe

Beldi, Ariane 18 October 2013 (has links)
Since the end of the 1990’s, most Japanese animated TV series have been arriving in Europe as DVDs, even though they used to be the main content of children TV programs 30 years ago. Breaking away from the usual marketing circuit which usually imposes a television broadcasting of a series before it is edited for the video market, animes on DVD illustrate a form of TV series « demediation ». Through this “repackaging” process, they are turned from regular TV programs into collectibles, directly sold to consumers . This dissertation studies the ways anime publics accept or not this logic of collecting TV series. The hypothesis offered is that of cine-videophilie, based on the premisse of a convergence of formerly distinct cinephile and videophile practices. This research combines reception studies and sociology of technology, thus highlighting under this specific angle some present developments in the transmédia processes at work within the audiovisual entertainment industries.
