Trata-se de investigar a autoridade civil como fruto de convenção e artifício, bem como a sua relação com o estabelecimento da lei e do comércio no pensamento de Hume. A influência recíproca entre o artifício político e estes dois elementos é abordada como produtora de liberdade, que diz Hume no ensaio Da origem do governo ser a \"perfeição da sociedade civil\". A ideia, assim, é expor como a autoridade, inicialmente arbitrária, concorre não apenas para a superação de problemas de cooperação e escassez, como também se mostra passível de uma ordenação geradora de regularidade, liberdade e florescimento humano. / This is an investigation of political authority as a product of convention and artifice, as well as of its relation with the establishment of law and commerce in the thought of Hume. The reciprocal influence between the political artifice and these two elements is addressed as productive of regularity and liberty, which Hume describes in the essay Of the Origin of Government as being the perfection of civil society. Thus, the idea is to show how authority, initially arbitrary, concurs not only in the overcoming of cooperation and scarcity problems, but also reveals itself as liable to an order generative of liberty and human flourishing.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Este trabalho se propÃe a analisar os modos de agenciamento do cinema reflexivo proposto pelo artista estadunidense David Lynch, com atenÃÃo maior para as obras Mulholland Drive e Inland Empire. Para isso, serÃo resgatadas discussÃes sobre o dispositivo cinematogrÃfico, desde a proposiÃÃo por Baudry, passando por atualizaÃÃes como as propostas por Metz e noÃÃes mais recentes como as apresentadas por Andrà Parente. As perspectivas sobre o dispositivo sÃo relacionadas com o conceito de mise en abyme; operacionalizado por Andrà Gide, posteriormente desenvolvido por DÃllenbach, e aplicados aos filmes de David Lynch por FÃtima Chinita; bem como os de reflexividade metacinematogrÃfica e reflexividade metafÃlmica, apresentados por Metz. SÃo ainda trabalhadas algumas questÃes que costumam orbitar a filmografia do cineasta e as pesquisas referentes ao tema, sendo estes: a desterritorializaÃÃo das linguagens artÃsticas, os conflitos entre um cinema de gÃnero e um cinema independente e o surrealismo. Estas discussÃes nos ajudam a compreender traÃos secundÃrios de nossa pesquisa que perpassam tanto a trajetÃria do autor quanto os filmes em observaÃÃo. As anÃlises dos filmes sÃo fundamentadas nos percursos apresentados acima e, quando possÃvel, articuladas com pensamentos transdisciplinares que nos possibilitem explorar aspectos especÃficos, principalmente com estudos da cibercultura, das teorias cinematogrÃficas e da psicanÃlise. A relaÃÃo dessas diferentes correntes teÃricas nos munem de artifÃcios para aprofundar instÃncias narrativas, tÃcnicas e estÃticas de Mulholland Drive e Inland Empire. O ordenamento desses aspectos aparentemente fragmentados, na teoria e nas obras do cineasta estadunidense, traduzem-se na prÃpria estrutura do trabalho, com capÃtulos referentes a cada tema e nÃo-cumulativos e sequenciais. Por fim, as operaÃÃes conceituais propostas à anÃlise das imagens em movimento do corpus escolhido nos permitem defender que a reflexividade à um elemento estruturante nos trabalhos do cinema de David Lynch e, de modo geral, em partes do cinema contemporÃneo. / This study aims to analyze the agency modes of reflective films proposed by the north-american artist David Lynch, with greater attention to both movies Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. Besides, some discussions will be redeemed on cinematic apparatus, since its conceptual proposition by Baudry, through updates as proposed by Metz and some recent notions such as those presented by Andrà Parente. The outlook on the cinematic apparatus are related to the concepts of mise en abyme, operated by Andrà Gide and subsequently developed by DÃllenbach, and applied to the films of David Lynch by the work of Fatima Chinita; and the metacinematographic reflectivity and metafilmic reflectivity, presented by Metz, as well. It will present another issues that orbit the filmography of the director and researches on the topic oftenly, namely: the dispossession of artistic languages, conflicts between a genre cinema and an independent film and the surrealistic art movement. These discussions help us to understand some secondary traits of our research that pervade both the trajectory of the author as the films under our observation. The analyze of both movies are based on the routes listed above and, where possible, articulated with transdisciplinary thoughts that allow us to explore specific aspects, especially with cyberculture, studies of film theory and psychoanalysis. The relationship of these different theoretical perspectives endow the artifices to deepen narrative, technical and aesthetic instances of Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. The management of those aspects apparently fragmented, in theory and in the works of the north-american filmmaker, are reflected in the structure of this work, with noncumulative and non-sequential chapters for each treated subject. Finally, the conceptual operations proposed to analyze the chosen corpus of moving images allow us to defend that reflectivity is a structural element in the David Lynch film works and, in general, in some parts of contemporary cinema.

A dissertação procura compreender o fenômeno da financeirização no âmbito do capitalismo contemporâneo. Uma série de transformações iniciadas nos anos 1970 assinalou o declínio do regime de acumulação fordista e a provável emergência de uma nova fase do capitalismo. Sua característica fundamental consiste em um movimento de financeirização, decorrente em parte de mudanças desenvolvidas na esfera financeira. Seus traços mais destacados são o aumento exponencial das transações, tanto em termos absolutos como em relação às atividades produtivas; a liberalização e desregulamentação de mercados e das atividades financeiras em todo o mundo; o surgimento de novos agentes e instituições ligados às finanças. Processo este que desembocou no aumento da importância do capital financeiro nos circuitos de valorização. O caráter recente deste fenômeno ainda não permitiu que fossem estabelecidos consensos teóricos sobre a questão. Por conta disso, a dissertação debruça-se sobre as obras de dois pensadores marxistas, François Chesnais e David Harvey, buscando estabelecer semelhanças, diferenças e, sobretudo, as complementaridades de suas contribuições. A escolha de Chesnais se impõe pelo papel destacado que o assunto ocupa em sua obra. Harvey, por sua vez, concede primazia à discussão das relações das finanças com os demais aspectos que caracterizam o capitalismo na atualidade. / The dissertation seeks to understand the phenomenon of \"financialization\" under contemporary capitalism. A series of transformations started in the 1970s which began out the decline of the \"Fordist\" regime of accumulation and the possible emergence of a new phase of capitalism. Its key feature is a movement of \"financialization\", which results in part from changes in the financial sphere. Its distinctive aspects are the exponential increase in transactions, both in absolute terms and in comparison to productive activities; liberalization and deregulation of financial markets and activities around the world; the emergence of new actors and institutions related to finance. This process led to an increased importance of financial capital in the circuits of valorization. This new moment has not yet allowed to establish a theoretical consensus on the issue. For this reason, the dissertation focuses on the works of two Marxist thinkers, François Chesnais and David Harvey, seeking to establish similarities, differences and, above all, complementarities of their contributions. Choosing Chesnais is imposed due to the prominent role the subject occupies in his work. Harvey, in turn, prioritizes the discussion of relations between finance and other aspects of capitalism today.

Há geralmente duas maneiras de se estudar o ceticismo de Hume: aproximando-o dos céticos pirrônicos, apesar dos seus protestos, ou aproximando-o dos acadêmicos, seguindo a recomendação do próprio autor. Entretanto, existe outra maneira de compreendermos o seu ceticismo, que consiste em avaliar em que medida Hume se aproxima de cada escola cética, e em que sentido se distancia delas. Para este propósito, nada melhor do que tentar compreender o ceticismo de Hume comparando as suas concepções com as de outros céticos do período em que ele viveu. A tese tem por finalidade realizar este confronto, a fim de contribuir para a interpretação do ceticismo moderno e sugerir uma maneira de aproximá-lo do ceticismo de Hume. / In general, there are two ways to study Humes skepticism: comparing his ideas to Pyrrhonic skeptic, in spite of his disapproval, and comparing him to academic philosophers, following the authors recommendations. However, there is another way to interpret Humes skepticism, namely, evaluating how he differs from Pyrrhonic and academician philosophers. The better approach is to compare Humes skepticism to other skepticss conceptions of Humes age. The main goal of the present thesis is put in evidence these approaches to understanding modern skepticism and, specifically, a way to compare it to Humes skepticism.

"In Praise of Music": A Motivation for Choral Conductors, is a conductor’s survey of four contemporary works for chorus all titled "In Praise of Music." This study was created in tandem with the recital presentation of two of the works by composers David Conte and David Frank Long and an additional two works by Keith Bissell and Paul Hindemith. Each work is different in style, in the choice of text, in accompaniment, and in the choral forces required. There is no single text titled "In Praise of Music" from which each composer might have begun the creative process. What binds these works together is the concept that music carries emotion and shares it with those who hear it. Bissell requires orchestra, an Orff instrument ensemble, satb mixed chorus and women’s chorus in his music with texts from four different poets: Alfred, Lord Tennyson; John Dryden; William Shakespeare; and Robert Herrick. David Conte’s work is set for chorus, six soloists, semi-chorus, and orchestra. Conte also chose the texts for his work from three poets; Thomas Carew, John Dryden, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Paul Hindemith’s work, set to a text by Martin Luther, offers many different performance options as it is meant to be performed by non-professional musicians and singers, using whoever might be available. "Our Song (In Praise of Music)" was commissioned by this writer for his D.M.A recital performance. Composer David Frank Long wrote both the text and music for the work. The essay includes biographical information on each composer and poet and the texts used for each work. There is also a structural chart and compositional analysis of each work.

Upproren i arabvärlden och Västeuropa har haft olika tillvägagångssätt och olika utfall. Syftet med uppsatsen är att visa att David Kilcullens teori kring upprorsbekämpning är tillämpig oavsett konfliktens natur eller geografiskt läge. Uppsatsen vill illustrera detta genom att pröva teorin mot en annan konflikt än, konflikten på Östtimor och i Irak, ur vilken Kilcullen dragit sina erfarenheter och slutsatser. Min förhoppning är att det inte finns någon skillnad och att teorin därför är fullt tillämplig och därmed även kan användas i ett större perspektiv. Den fråga uppsatsen därmed eftersträvar att svara på är i vilken omfattning är David Kilcullens teorier kring upprorsbekämp-ning tillämpliga på en inomeuropeisk, inomstatlig konflikt likt Nordirland. Uppsatsen avser att använder en teoriprövande metod med en jämförande, mest lika design. Det innebär att den utgår från ett redan bestämt värde på den beroende variabeln och arbetar sig så att säga bakåt genom teorin. Teorin är i högsta grad tillämpbar och enligt uppsatsens analys påvisas att den har en styr-ka. Tack vare att det påvisats att när agerandet i större omfattning överrensstämmer med teorin blir utfallet mer fördelaktigt. Detta gäller även i ett, för vilken teorin inte utvecklades, annat geogra-fiskt område. När insatser varit framgångsrika har det varit en högre frekvens av de önskvärda beteenden som beskrivs i Kilcullens teori. Där insatser varit mindre framgångsrika, eller rent av direkta misslyckanden, kan konstateras att frekvensen av de önskvärda beteendena har varit betyd-ligt lägre och i många fall till och med direkta motsatser till dessa. Detta oavsett geografiskt områ-de är teorin tillämpbar. / The uprisings in the Arab world and Western Europe have had different approaches and different outcomes. The purpose of this essay is to show that David Kilcullens theory of counterinsurgency is irrespective of the conflicts natural or geographical location. The essay intends to illustrate this thesis by examining the theory against another conflict then, the conflict in East Timor and in Iraq, out of which Kilcullen has drawn his experiences and conclusions. My hope is that there is no difference and that the theory is therefore fully applicable and therefore can be used in a wider perspective. The question the essay seeks to answer is how far David Kilcullen regarding counter-insurgency theory is applicable to an intra-European, intra-state conflict like Northern Ireland. The essay intends to use a theory challenging approach with a comparative, most similar system de-sign. This means that it assumes a pre-specified value on the dependent variable and works its way backwards, so to speak, by theory. The theory is highly applicable to and in accordance with the essay analysis demonstrated that it has strength. Thanks to the detection of when the conduct of counterinsurgency units is in line with the theory the outcome becomes more favourable. This also applies to a, for which the theory was not developed, different geographical area. When efforts have been successful, it has been a higher frequency of desirable behaviours as described in Kil-cullens theory. Where efforts have been less successful, or even direct failures, it can be observed that the frequency of the desired behaviours have been much lower and in many cases even the direct opposites of the desired. Regardless of the geographic area the theory is applicable.
