Spaces of Trade in Tallinn: Uncertainty and Everyday Life

Dzadonova, Jana January 2015 (has links)
The everyday survival of the other at the border between ‘East’ and ‘West’ is the object of this study. The country in-between, Estonia, is a ‘melting pot’ of Russian, Western and Nordic influence, what makes this zone an active, diverse, nevertheless invisible in the global awareness. The process of transition and rapid neoliberalization, which is characteristic for the post-socialist country such as Estonia, brings together number of side-effects, lots of redundant people, who could not adapt to the new regime, who speculate and trade. The investigation of ‘Russian’ semi-official spaces of trade in Estonian capital, Tallinn, reveals the values and defects of the open-air markets.  The thesis highlights the need to politicize the processes around the disappearing and/or transforming the open-air markets in the city. In spite of the fact, that the informal trading is often connected with poverty, illegality, low hygiene, distrust and crime, this work explores the alternative ways of trading, the power of immediacy and aesthetics in confrontation to the global capital. The architecture as the transversal practice cuts across the patterns of trading based on irresponsible consumerism and desire, and experiments with the original concept of the market with the dialogue in front. The speculative interventions are the sites of the common life, production and renewal.

Fisionomia da cidade: Sorocaba - cotidiano e desenvolvimento urbano - 1890-1943 / Physiognomy of the city: Sorocaba daily routine and urban development 1890-1943

Carvalho, Rogério Lopes Pinheiro de 13 June 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to create a social-cultural history about the city of Sorocaba, in the corresponding period between the decade of 1890, when industrialization is intensified in the city, and the first years of the decade of 1940. Therefore the object to be studied is the city of Sorocaba itself during this period; the challenge is also to reflect about the entrance and specificity of the city in the modernity flow, a historical process regulated by the transformation and intensification of the capitalistic relations in the country. Concerning this issue, I intend to investigate aspects of the urban development that took place in Sorocaba, so in order to think of the city as an artifact, it is crucial to study a few fundamental urban improvements, like the introduction of the water and drain system and the use of electricity, and the representations, impressions and perceptions elaborated in this context that interact with these transformations. The idea is to search for and grasp the physiognomy of the city. Such modifications are implemented by the local governing elites, which consequently build an image of the city that would become known as the Manchester of São Paulo. Therefore, the aim is to analyze and historicize this symbolic construction, connecting it with other representations/ perceptions of the urbe, produced by several groups, segments and social classes in the daily routine, by this means the endeavor is to grasp the various practices, forms of sociability, that occur among different actors in the urban space as a consequence of the modifications that the city goes through during the observed period.

Bonassi, Edna Celeste Vieira 20 September 2010 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the teaching of globalization as course content in the final year of primary level education. The study endeavors to bring to light how globalization is understood at the theoretical level, however, it mainly focuses on how globalization is inserted into the everyday experience of students, how it is expressed in their day-to-day lives and the dialectic processes that arise therein, with the purpose of taking advantage of the contextual conditions of this subject matter and how it is delivered in Geography classes. The concept for this study arose from the contradictions and paradoxes evident in the behavior of students with regards to their possession and use of the latest generation technological devices, and also from the difficulties that we, as teachers, face in teaching this subject. Thus, the aim of this study concerns the possibility of contextualizing the subject of globalization from a dialectic perspective, considering the variables that constitute it: the technological, cultural, political, economic and social dimensions, which overlap each other in everyday life. Beforehand, however, part of the study is dedicated to the comprehension of youths and their position in the context of globalization, and how it is received in their experiences and daily life. At the beginning of this new century, youths are living in the \"perpetual present\", a world fragmented by a plethora of images, signs and meanings; the present time is an apparently unique moment, detached from the past and with supposedly no link to the future. Youth as a condition is laid out in the moulds of economic rationality and is exposed to globalization through senses that are oriented towards the consumer market at this socio-historical and cultural junction, when signs, products and culture take the form of merchandise and delineate a type of behavior defined by immediatism and ephemerality. The students relationships with the context are demonstrated by the replies they gave in questionnaires containing both closed-ended and open-ended questions. Accordingly, comprehension of the formative elements of globalization is necessary, in this case technology and consumption stand out, the latter with a cultural connotation, as a result of the emphasis given to merchandise comprising of signs, images and goods that, in general, take on new meaning in the process, like citizenship linked to the consumption rights at the service of capitalism. This dialectic process is apparent in the relationship between the teaching and learning of globalization, aimed at the formative development of the student. Accordingly, interviews with teachers are emphasized, with the purpose of ascertaining how the subject of globalization is articulated in the final year of primary level education, with the intention of making evident the difficulties that these professionals face with regards to the subject, when they are confronted by relevant issues, and to propose suggestions. In turn, the promotion of this subject is the axis for possible suggestions to compose the articulation of globalization as subject matter in the dialectic movement of the dimensions it takes on, with the purpose of favoring the teaching and learning of this complex subject. Furthermore, it is necessary to make the content relevant from the standpoint of the reality experienced by these youths and to contribute to a more conscious manner of thinking and educating the student in the development of citizenship.

The journalistic threads with which everyday life is entwined are the narrative articulations that this thesis analyzes. It investigates the temporal identity of journalistic narratives and the value that time plays for such a type of communication, by checking the contributions of journalism to the perception of social time. This research also investigates the notions of time that contribute to its legitimacy, while separating journalistic narrations into the production of past, present and future. The thesis purposes analyze these productions in two ways – as commemorations and as events - and investigates the need to celebrate the past and the ways that this celebration experience takes as history, as tradition and as memory, three different strategies of narratives of bygone days. It also notes the participation of the past in the construction of news, a particular form of producing events, different from that held by the historiographical operation. We present a typology of the uses of time in daily narratives of three newspapers with more than one hundred years in Rio de Janeiro: Jornal do Commercio, O Fluminense and Jornal do Brasil. These uses of time expose some functions performed by journalistic practices in everyday life, especially that of counting the course of time, either fixing it or potentiating its flow effect. Then, this thesis shows the concepts of history involved in these journalistic emplotments and, in a broader approach, investigates the long-term processes of signifying journalism by the different connections we have established over time with this social practice. Finally, we highlight the importance of journalistic narratives to frame multiple consciousness of history, due to their daily work of synthesizing gates to other times, whether to the past or to the future or even to the present as an extended territoriality larger than experiences personally attended. We tend to approach journalism as a particular form of social interaction, defined by a specific experience based on the periodicity and for whom most of its history has been based on the expectation and the generation of novelties.

Harju, Anne January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is about the every day life of children who suffer from economic hardship. The aim is, from the children's point of view, to create an understanding of the consequences that economic hardship has on their relationships with their parents and other children. A further aim is to gain an understanding of how children act in relation to the families' economic situation and how they experience their every day life and general living conditions. Parents have also been interviewed about the families' general living conditions and the interaction between children and parents in relation to the economic situation. The empirical data has been collected over a period of fourteen months. Fourteen children aged 7-19 years and eight parents in seven families have been interviewed on five occasions. A total of 44 interviews have been conducted. The theoretical foundation of the thesis is childhood sociology, symbolic interactionism and social identity. The conclusions of this thesis can be summarized in two major results. The first is that economic hardship is of importance in the relationship with other children and in the interaction between children and their parents. The children's possibilities of participating together with peers through possessions and activities are affected to a varying extent depending on the circumstances. The relationship with their parents is also affected by children having to take economic responsibility and by children cooperating with them. Economic hardship also causes a strain on the relationship. The second major result is that children are active in forming theirs and their families' every day life in relation to the economic limits. On the basis of their understanding and their definition of the situation they choose different strategies, the aims of which are either to live within the limitations of the situation, so-called reactive strategies, or to change their own situation and sometimes also the situation of their household. These are defined as proactive strategies in the thesis.

Otsuka, Ed 01 September 2009 (has links)
The study has as objective the discussion about the insertion of the leisure activities in the everyday of the Mental Health services users. The relevance of the work is affirmed by the expanding demand for this kind of activity, wich access is restricted. The presented questions have their origin in observations accomplished by an activity called Copa da Inclusão (Inclusion Cup) that gathers Mental Health services located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. It constitutes in a meeting of users, professionals, relatives and friends. The purposeof the event is promoting the access to leisure activities wich shortage highlights the lack of oportunities provided to then. The leisure aspect is an essential component in the men´s life. It makes possible the liberation of the everyday obligations. From these activities may occur a breakup of the repetitive, stereotyped and alienated way of living. In this space is possible the creative and transformer expression that reflects in others aspects of life. We investigated the elements that compose and define the everyday life of the interviwed people. From this context we verified the transformations that these practices may promote in the their lives. We find the way that this kind of activity can constitute a space that enable for the user the comprehension of the ill role and the imposed limits by this socially built condition. Promotes the social insertion of the user when recognizes his capacities, necessities and desires. Three enterviews were achieved with users of differents services of Mental Health located in the city of São Paulo. The analysis of the data collected in the interviews is accomplished from the Social Psychology theory formulated by Enrique Pichon-Rivière. We identified thematic nucleuses wich we refer: the house, the work, the health service as a bridge and view of the disease.
