'Land of rape and honey' : settler colonialism in the Canadian West

Canada is widely regarded as a liberal, multicultural nation that prides itself on a history of peace and tolerance. Oftentimes set up in contrast to the United States, Canada’s history of colonialism has been popularly imagined as a gentler, necessary, inevitable, and even benevolent version of expansion and subjugation of Indigenous populations. In recent decades scholars in the social sciences and humanities have challenged the rhetoric of Canada as a consistently benevolent and peaceful nation. They have pointed to the discontinuity between Canada’s rosy image, drawn from foundational nation-building myths of benevolence, and the deeply rooted colonial narratives of necessity and inevitability that underpin those nation-building myths. This discontinuity manifests itself in far reaching patterns of social and economic disparity between Indigenous and settler populations over time across the nation. This reality is acutely seen in the Canadian West, as Canada’s historic frontier. This thesis re-problematises narratives of Canadian nation-building from a regional perspective. It is argued that positioning the West as the frontier peripheral to Canadian ‘civilisation’ is part of a broader settler colonial logic that sees the contemporary manifestation of disparity between Indigenous and settler populations as emanating from uniquely backward, peripheral places in Canada, rather than challenging the fundamental benevolence of the Canadian nation. Through a close reading of two trials pertaining to an instance of multiple perpetrator sexual assault that occurred in Saskatchewan in 2003, I demonstrate how the complex web of interlocking systems of domination that oppress and privilege in trials do not emanate from the backwardness of the place in which they occurred, but are rather indicative of broader societal processes and power relations indicative of settler colonialism. This thesis argues there is a conflation between western Canadian identity, and settler identity, owing to the foundational nation-building myths in which the West became Canadian. In moving forward, this thesis proposes an acknowledgment of the settler colonial nature of westward expansion and suggests practicing openness to considering different ways westward expansion might have been understood and experienced. Key to this process is learning to listen, learning to hear, learning to believe, and learning to see oneself implicated in the stories of those who experienced westward expansion differently from how it is popularly constructed in settler society. I begin here by proposing the complainant’s voice in the trial be heard, and be believed. Her voice and her silence provides insight into understanding the oppressive power of settler-colonialism.

CAN YOU SEE THE BEE? : COOPERATING WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF NATIVE BEE AWARENESS IN BRAZIL

Brazil is the country with the second-largest number of cataloged bee species in the world, about 2,000. Among these we have stingless bees, with around 250 different species; these live in society, produce honey, and unlike the European Apis Mellifera, do not sting. Sadly, most Brazilians only know of the existence of a single bee species, which is the invasive European bee. Native bees are not only the most important pollinators of our native flora but are also part of an intricate and fragile web of life that is currently under threat. For each bee species that go extinct, there are far-reaching consequences for the entire ecosystem it belongs to, therefore it’s imperative to protect and care for our native bees.In this project, I've worked alongside the Terra Mirim foundation. I’ve compiled information on native bees, their biology, the native history of beekeeping, societal behavior, their importance, risks, etc. I started this work in collaboration with Terra Mirim, a foundation that works on the recovery of the Atlantic Forest and has over 60 native beehives under their care, they also receive many visitors throughout the year who are looking for closer contact with nature. I believe awareness, knowledge, and proximity are important starting points for developing empathy towards other forms of life, so along with the photographs I’ve been taking, I am transforming the information I compiled into signboards to promote awareness among Terra Mirim’s visitors.

We also analyzed how the said writings reproduced and merged themselves into another authors' works, disseminating domination ideologies. We verified socio-political elements through the religion diffusion proposed by Companhia de Jesus and the effects to the guarani culture, we also verified factors studied by Eco (2012), about the author-work-reader and concepts like decolonialism and medieval imaginary. The works chosen as corpus for the investigation are: Os Três Mártires Rio-Grandenses, from the priest Luís Gonzaga Jaeger S. J. (1951); the epic poem O Uraguai, from Basílio da Gama (1769); the work Sepé Tiaraju - Uma farsa em nossa história, from Ubirajara Raffo Constant (2006) ant the theorical essay Terra de Ñheçu, from the writer Nelson Hoffmann (2009). This investigation proposal signalizes to the qualitative research field; the theoretical basis is the comparative literature from authors like Coutinho and Carvalhal (1994) and Santiago (2000). It was important, to this research, the analysis from scholars like Anibal Quijano (2005), that deciphered aspects relating to the power coloniality; Walter Mignolo (2003) and Gayatri C. Spivak (2014), that based this research about the questions related to decoloniality and subalternity; Erneldo Schallemberger (2006), which talk about the guarani territoriality; and Laura de Mello e Souza (1986), that discuss the respect to medieval imaginary in her works. We can note that, nowadays, this representation about all and any indigenous is still made naturally; for this reason, we understand that this study could contribute to the reversion of this value judgement, in the sense of recognize that in these representations there is almost always present only the colonizers' voice. By using the polyphony and dialogism concepts, in the Bakhtin (2010) perspective, and the comparative literature methodology, we find out, in the corpus works, that the winners voice become present, promoting prejudice by disseminating a colonized thought. Therefore, we understand that creation of historical and literary characters, as Ñheçu and Sepé, thus represented, helped to ideologically structure the projection of Portugal and Spain colonialist imperialism, apart from the ideologies coming from the Religious Counter-Reformation, sowing conservative ideals, good practice and politeness in conformity with the religious and Eurocentric precepts to represent the good and the bad savage. / O objetivo geral desta pesquisa foi a análise das representações históricas e literárias que se construíram sobre os caciques Ñheçu e Sepé Tiaraju, que viveram entre os séculos XVII e XVIII, e como tais visões reforçaram as ideias que caracterizaram o bom e o mau selvagem, a partir do eurocentrismo. Os objetivos específicos foram: responder como são representadas figuras dos dois caciques na literatura brasileira e entender como as referidas escritas se reproduziram e se fundiram nas obras de outros autores, disseminando ideologias de dominação (colonialismo e subalternidade). Verificaram-se elementos sócio-políticos a partir da difusão religiosa proposta pela Companhia de Jesus e os efeitos para a cultura guarani, além de fatores estudados por Eco (2012), sobre as intenções do autor-obra-leitor e conceitos como decolonialismo e imaginário medieval. As obras escolhidas para o corpus da investigação foram: Os Três Mártires Rio-Grandenses, do padre Luís Gonzaga Jaeger S. J. (1951); o poema épico O Uraguai, de Basílio da Gama (1769); a obra Sepé Tiaraju – Uma farsa em nossa história, de Ubirajara Raffo Constant (2006) e o ensaio histórico Terra de Ñheçu, do escritor Nelson Hoffmann (2009). É uma pesquisa qualitativa; serviram, de base teórica, a literatura comparada de autores como Coutinho e Carvalhal (1994) e Santiago (2000). Foram importantes, para esta pesquisa, as análises de estudiosos como Quijano (2005), que decifrou aspectos referentes à colonialidade do poder; Mignolo (2003) e Spivak, (2014), que embasaram o texto com relação a questões referentes à decolonialidade e subalternidade; Schallemberger (2006), que discorre sobre a territorialidade guarani; e Mello e Souza (1986), que trabalha em suas obras a respeito do imaginário medieval. Utilizando os conceitos de polifonia e dialogismo, na perspectiva de Bakhtin (2010), e a metodologia da literatura comparada, averiguou-se, nas obras do corpus, que se torna presente a voz dos vencedores, promovendo o preconceito ao disseminar um pensamento colonizado. Entende-se, portanto, que a criação de personagens históricos e literários, como Ñheçu e Sepé, assim representados, ajudaram a estruturar ideologicamente a projeção do imperialismo colonialista de Portugal e Espanha, além das ideologias advindas da Contrarreforma Religiosa, semeando ideais conservadoristas, boas práticas e boas maneiras em conformidade com os preceitos religiosos e eurocentrados para representações do bom e do mau selvagem.

[pt] O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar, a partir da perspectiva decolonial, a história da incorporação do modelo Eurocêntrico de autorregulamentação na criação do Sistema Brasileiro de Autorregulamentação Publicitária, durante contexto de ditadura civil-militar, entre 1978 e 1980. Para isso, foi realizada uma pesquisa histórica, adotando perspectiva decolonial, utilizando dados primários e secundários para analisar o caso em questão. O uso da perspectiva decolonial permitiu entender que a incorporação de elementos estrangeiros ao sistema brasileiro ocorreu por meio, principalmente, de quatro fatores: o alinhamento da publicidade brasileira a padrões internacionais, o incentivo da International Advertising Association ao setor publicitário brasileiro para implementar a prática de autorregulamentação; a relação entre setor publicitário e governo militar; e os movimentos consumeristas estadunidenses replicados no Brasil. Mais do que uma discussão focada no poder de empresas sobre consumidores, espera-se que a problematização de narrativa homogênea de consumerismo gere mais conhecimento sobre as relações entre o Norte Global e o Sul Global e como o controle pós-colonial se materializa em consumerismo, limitando formas de pensar que sejam distintas à lógica neoliberal de defesa do consumidor por meio de livres mercados, assim ajudando a manter domínio Eurocêntrico sobre conhecimento. A pesquisa oferece subsídios para a discussão de d formas possíveis e alternativas de proteção do consumidor, excluídas da narrativa homogênea, levando a outras reflexões, como, por exemplo, o que poderia ser feito para melhorar a proteção do consumidor brasileiro, e qual deveria ser o dever do Estado na proteção do consumidor. / [en] The objective of this study is to analyze, from a decolonial perspective, how the incorporation of the Eurocentric model of self-regulation occurred in the creation of the Brazilian Advertising Self-Regulation System, considering the context of a civil-military dictatorship, in the years of 1978 to 1980. In order to do so, a historical research with a decolonial perspective was carried out, using primary and secondary data to analyze the case in question. The use of a decolonial perspective allowed the researcher to understand that the incorporation of foreign elements into the Brazilian system occurred mainly through four factors: the alignment of Brazilian advertising sector with international standards; International Advertising Association s incentive to Brazilian advertising sector to implement its practice of self-regulation; the relationship between the advertising sector and the military government; and the US consumerist movements replicated in Brazil. More than a discussion focused on business power over consumers, the problematization of a homogeneous narrative of consumerism is expected to generate more insight into the relations between the Global North and the Global South and how postcolonial control materializes in consumerism, limiting ways of thinking that are distinct from the neoliberal logic of consumer protection through free markets, thus helping to maintain Eurocentric dominance over knowledge. The research offers subsidies for the discussion on possible and alternative forms of consumer protection, excluded from the homogeneous narrative, which leads to other reflections, such as, what could be done to improve the protection of Brazilian consumers, and what should be the State s role in consumer protection.

[pt] O presente estudo buscou analisar, a partir de uma perspectiva decolonial, como e por que padrões eurocêntricos foram adotados pelo movimento de consumerismo no Brasil e as consequências colonialistas desse processo. Para alcançar o objetivo proposto, foram desenvolvidos três artigos, que abordaram discussões relacionadas a modernidade/colonialidade/decolonialismo; consumerismo e movimento consumerista; e um estudo empírico de uma organização consumerista brasileira. Foram revisadas as literaturas acerca de decolonialismo e consumerismo, nas quais ficou evidente a resistência da área de marketing em abordar o tema de consumerismo em pesquisas e a baixa presença de estudos que utilizem perspectivas alternativas àquelas originadas no Norte Global para analisar fenômenos de consumo, mesmo os de natureza crítica. No caso da Proteste foi identificado que as práticas consumeristas da organização refletem a colonialidade praticada por organizações eurocêntricas, que influenciam o consumerismo no Brasil, impondo o modelo de consumerismo praticado no Norte Global, ignorando as particularidades do mercado brasileiro e as necessidades da população que não se relacionam ao consumo. Com base em entrevistas e em dados secundários, a análise demonstrou como a Proteste lida com a hierarquia criada dentro da Euroconsumers, posicionando-a na parte inferior dessa estrutura, bem como adota o conhecimento consumerista universalista eurocêntrico, que não necessariamente contribui para resolver as questões consumeristas do Brasil. A perspectiva decolonial pode contribuir para a identificação da colonialidade presente na influência eurocêntrica no movimento consumerista, evidenciando a imposição do conhecimento do Norte Global sobre o tema, que é visto como universal e ignora as necessidades do consumidor brasileiro, que não são tratadas em profundidade. Assim, o movimento consumerista brasileiro se concentra nas questões relacionadas à escolha de produtos e serviços, valorizando a etapa transacional do consumo, deixando de lado o bem-estar e as necessidades básicas do consumidor. / [en] The present study sought to analyze, from a decolonial perspective, how and why Eurocentric standards were adopted by the consumerism movement in Brazil and the colonialist consequences of this process. To achieve the proposed objective, three articles were developed, which addressed discussions related to modernity/coloniality/decolonialism; consumerism and consumerist movement; and an empirical study of a Brazilian consumer organization. The literature on decolonialism and consumerism was reviewed, in which it was evident the resistance of the marketing area to address the topic of consumerism in research and the low presence of studies that use alternative perspectives to those originated in the Global North to analyze consumption phenomena, even those of a critical nature. In the case of Proteste, it was identified that the organization s consumerist practices reflect the coloniality practiced by Eurocentric organizations, which influence consumerism in Brazil by imposing the model of consumerism practiced in the Global North, ignoring the particularities of the Brazilian market and the needs of the population that does not relate to consumption. Based on interviews and secondary data, the analysis demonstrated how Proteste deals with the hierarchy created within Euroconsumers, positioning it at the bottom of this structure, as well as adopting the Eurocentric universalist consumerist knowledge, which does not necessarily contribute to solving the issues consumers in Brazil. The decolonial perspective can contribute to identifying the coloniality present in the Eurocentric influence on the consumerist movement, highlighting the imposition of knowledge from the Global North on the subject, seen as universal, and ignoring the needs of the Brazilian consumer, which are not treated in depth. Thus, the Brazilian consumerist movement focuses on issues related to the choice of products and services, valuing the transactional stage of consumption, leaving aside the well-being and basic needs of the consumer.

[pt] O conceito de desenvolvimento é um fator chave que impulsiona diversos aspectos da vida em sociedade, inclusive os próprios processos de gestão. Conforme os estudos de Arturo Escobar, percebe-se que o desenvolvimento se tornou um discurso poderoso e envolvente. Essa lógica divide o mundo desde o século passado, classificando e hierarquizando os países com bases em parâmetros que foram estabelecidos por aqueles que já atingiram o almejado patamar de país desenvolvido, ignorando muitas vezes o contexto histórico de colonização que assombrou diversas nações. Tal é o caso do Brasil, que hoje carrega o título de país em desenvolvimento. Porém, ainda que essa seja uma realidade social, o campo da administração e do marketing pouco se debruçam para entender os impactos desses valores e dos resquícios coloniais. Diante disso, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar, a partir de uma ótica decolonial, de que maneira a propaganda empresarial contribui para a construção de uma imagem de desenvolvimento/subdesenvolvimento do Brasil. Para tal, foi feita uma análise com base na semiótica greimasiana de 71 imagens publicitárias de 5 campanhas globais da empresa Havaianas, com o intuito de entender os textos e as interações simbólicas transmitidas por essa marca. Por meio desta investigação, averiguou-se a exploração de elementos de uma brasilidade estereotipada, que resgata sempre os aspectos naturais e a noção do paraíso tropical como forma de sedução ao país, que permanece sendo representado com associações que reforçam o pouco desenvolvimento. / [en] The concept of development is a key factor that drives several aspects of life in society, including business processes. According to studies by Arturo Escobar, development became a powerful and engaging discourse. This logic divides the world since the last century, classifying and ranking countries based on parameters that were generated by those who have already reached the desired level of developed country, often ignoring the context of colonization that haunted several nations. Such is the case of Brazil, which today bears the title of the developing country. However, even though this is a social reality, the field of administration and marketing do not focus very much on understanding the impacts of these values and colonial remains. the present work aims to analyze, from a decolonial perspective, how business advertising contributes to the construction of an image of development / underdevelopment in Brazil. To this end, an analysis was made based on the Greimasian semiotics of 71 advertising images from 5 global campaigns of the Havaianas brand, in order to understand the texts and symbolic interactions transmitted by this brand. Through this investigation, it was verified the exploration of elements of a stereotyped Brazilianness, which always rescues the natural aspects and the notion of tropical paradise as a way of seducing the country, which remains represented by associations that reinforce little development.

[pt] Esta pesquisa tem o objetivo de apresentar um método de análise de projetos realizados em favelas, relacionados aos efeitos de ações de comunicação multissensorial, vinculadas ao que se denonima sustentabilidade comunicacional. Como categorias analíticas, são usados os conceitos de sustentabilidade comunicacional, colonialismo e saberes subalternos. A junção entre a pesquisa, a ação e a abordagem do Design, tendo como locus de estudo a materialização de três projetos gerados em comunidades cariocas, compõe este trabalho. Dois desses projetos têm em comum os desafios e soluções próprias desse campo de investigação, tendo em vista os esforços despendidos para mitigar os impactos da pandemia nesses territórios. O terceiro projeto diz respeito à atuação dos trabalhadores ligados à cultura da favela. Os resultados da análise de dados, a partir da triangulação de métodos, quais sejam: a pesquisa bibliográfica, a pesquisa de campo e uma série de entrevistas, apontam para o efeito das ações de comunicação e os seus impactos simbólicos e culturais nas referidas comunidades. / [en] This research aims to present a method for analyzing projects carried out in favelas, related to the effects of multisensory communication actions linked to what is called communicational sustainability. Analytical categories used include communicational sustainability, colonialism, and subaltern knowledge concepts. The intersection of research, action, and a Design approach, focusing on the materialization of three projects generated in Rio de Janeiro communities, comprises this work. Two of these projects share the challenges and solutions inherent to this field of investigation, considering the efforts made to mitigate the pandemic s impact in these territories. The third project concerns the activities of workers involved in favela culture. The results of data analysis, based on triangulation of methods, including literature review, field research, and a series of interviews, point to the impact of communication actions and their symbolic and cultural effects in these communities.

Practicing Coexistence: Entanglements Between Ecology and Curating Art

This thesis formulates ecological thinking in curatorial practices, as a way to act against neoliberal values, far-right politics and find ways to work in a sensitive way in a time of accelerating ecological crisis. The current socio-political landscape, and its oppressive forces, influence profoundly the art world and whole societies at large. This thesis starts by looking how those forces affect artistic and curatorial practices, and suggests, that a counter-action for these threats could be a practice, that is informed by ecological thinking. Different, ecologically motivated curatorial practices are discussed with curators Jenni Nurmenniemi and Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, as well as collective Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology. Some additional examples are drawn from the work of Mustarinda association. What comes clear, is that ecological thinking is much more than thinking about the environment or sustainability, but rather, it has connection points with theories of new materialisms, post-fossil experimentation and decolonial thought, all of which are also interconnected and entangled. This thesis gathers a praxis, that is informed by said ecological thinking, which functions both as a thinking and a doing. Ecological thinking is about radical coexistence and entangled in the materialities of the more than human world. Ecologically informed practice, then, could mean paying attention to material dimensions of practices, slowing down and rethinking exhibition formats.

Doctrines and practices of the Burhaniya Sufi Order in the arab world and in the west between 1938 and 2012 : a decolonial and transdisciplinary analysis from an insider perspective

Ce mémoire présente une exploration décoloniale et transdisciplinaire des doctrines et pratiques de la confrérie soufie transnationale Burhaniya, dans le monde arabe et en Occident. Il traite principalement de la période s’étendant de la fondation de la confrérie en 1938 jusqu’en 2012. Pour bien contextualiser les particularités de l’émergence de cette confrérie moderne, ce mémoire présente tout d’abord son ancrage historique par l’étude de ses racines en lien avec l’histoire du soufisme en Afrique du Nord et en Asie de l’Ouest. Puis, ce mémoire offre une analyse comparative de certains des principaux contextes nationaux où s’est disséminée cette confrérie, à partir du Soudan, vers l’Égypte, la France, l’Allemagne, les États-Unis et le Canada. Suite à ses recherches, l’auteur conclut que les cheikhs de la Burhaniya ont facilité l’expansion de la confrérie en occident et ont perpétué un héritage soufi plutôt traditionnel au sein du monde moderne. Ils ont su le faire en préservant les doctrines fondamentales de leur tradition tout en adaptant leurs pratiques à divers contextes. / This thesis presents a decolonial and transdisciplinary examination of the doctrines and practices of the transnational Burhaniya Sufi order, in the Arab World and in the West. The main time period under consideration is from the foundation of the order in 1938 until 2012. In order to contextualize the particularities of this modern order’s emergence, this thesis begins by presenting its historical roots related to the history of Sufism in North Africa and West Asia. Then, the thesis offers a comparative analysis of certain national contexts in which the order was disseminated, from Sudan to Egypt, France, Germany, the United States, and Canada. The author concludes from his findings that the sheikhs of the Burhaniya have facilitated the expansion of their order in the West, and perpetuated a fairly traditional Sufi heritage in the modern world. They have done so by combining strong commitment to core doctrines and adaptability to contexts of practice.
