Latitudinaria latitude in thought or conduct

Landolt, Sandra, Art, College of Fine Arts, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
Latitudinaria* explores and critiques the ambivalence between current technological progress and the consequently depersonalised social structures and systems. I am using the development from mechanical Automata to mass production juxtaposed to Charlie Chaplin??s film and Jean Tinguelys kinetic art, as examples for the change of the social condition from the industrialisation to the current post-industrial era. The change of social condition I refer to as the ??depersonalisation?? or ??dehumanisation?? effect supported by my working experiences in the health system. The ??medicalisation of the life span?? and the discrepancy of creating a sustainable future less profit orientated are two indicators of how far we have been removed from our bodies. These observations are supported by the writing of Ivan Illich??s Medical Nemesis and Frank Schirrmachers?? analysis of the change of the social structure using the family configuration as an example. These conceptual ideas are visualised by a selection of kinetic art works and video installations. In the heart of this body of work is the process-orientated documentation of Zero AGL project. The project documents the journey of a discarded airplane that was re-assembled and reanimated by myself and a group of volunteers supported by local businesses. The struggle of the group of people stands as a metaphor for the current dilemma of the restricted usage of public space. Further it reflects on my own limitations dealing with the Australian outback culture and the transition of my own sculptural practice from small scale art works into the arena of life size public Art. Those experiences shaped the process and the direction of the project. The motivation for the creation of the body of kinetic sculptures and video installation is to highlight the absurdity of social constructed categories and controlling systems in a post-industrial society. The subject matter focuses on the social construction of the categories of the ??Norm?? and the limitations of failure. Latitudinaria gives the audience a lateral view on how human betterment is not always essentially connected to technological progress but on transforming ideas and enhancing it from a different point of view. * freedom from normal restraints, limitations and regulations.

What does it mean to be a pariah? : assimilation, depersonalization and uniqueness in the thought of Hannah Arendt

Kasper, Rafael Lembert January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation questions the meaning of the pariah in Hannah Arendt’s work, aiming at its comprehension within the broader context of Arendt’s political thought. The research departed from articles published in the anthology The Jewish Writings, in which Arendt approached the pariah relying on experiences of European Jews, mainly between the 19th and the 20th centuries; dealt with The Origins of Totalitarianism, text in which she defined the exclusion and destruction of European pariahs, specially Jews, as the “catalytic agent” of Europe’s broader collapse; arrived at texts such as The Human Condition (1958), in which Arendt presented plurality and uniqueness as new principles required by the reestablishment of human dignity in a post-totalitarian world. Developed in non-monistic lines, this text deals with topics of Arendt’s work, as assimilation, the attempt of absorption of Jews and other pariahs by the “social”; depersonalization, the radical movement of dissolution of personality and alienation of the ego towards historical forces; and uniqueness, as a basic condition of plural and irreplaceable human beings. It holds, in broad terms, that the pariah’s experience, its exclusion, disappearance and attempt of reappearance, is a fundamental example for acting and thinking politically in the present world.

An Empirical Investigation of Personality and Situational Predictors of Job Burnout

Caudill, Helene L. (Helene Litowsky) 12 1900 (has links)
Empirical research exploring the complex phenomenon of job burnout is still considered to be in its infancy stage. One clearly established stream of research, though, has focused on the antecedents of the three job burnout components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. In particular, situational characteristics have received a great deal of attention to date. Four situational factors: (1) role ambiguity, (2) role conflict, (3) quantitative role overload, and (4) organizational support were included in this analysis to test their significance as predictors of job burnout. Another set of antecedents that has received far less attention in job burnout research is personal dispositions. Individual differences, most notably personality traits, may help us understand why some employees experience burnout whereas others do not, even within the same work environment. Four personality characteristics: (1) self-esteem, (2) locus of control, (3) communal orientation, and (4) negative affectivity were included to test their significance as predictors of job burnout. An on-site, self-report survey instrument was used. A sample of 149 human service professionals employed at a large government social services department voluntarily participated in this research. The main data analysis techniques used to test the research hypotheses were canonical correlation analysis and hierarchical analysis of sets. While role ambiguity showed no significant associations with any of the three job burnout components, the remaining situational factors had at least one significant association. Among all the situational characteristics, quantitative role overload was the strongest situational predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while organizational support was the strongest situational predictor of personal accomplishment. The personality predictor set as a whole showed a significant relationship with each of the job burnout components, providing strong proof that dispositional effects are important in predicting job burnout. Among all the personality characteristics, negative affectivity was the strongest personality predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while communal orientation was the strongest personality predictor of personal accomplishment. Comparisons between the personality and situational predictor sets revealed that personality characteristics were the stronger predictor for all three of the job burnout components. No interactions among the situational and personality predictors proved significant.

”En kvalitativ studie om servitrisens självkänsla och emotioner inom restaurangbranschen” / ”A qualitative study on the waitress' self-esteem and emotions in the restaurant industry”

Andersson, Ida, Syamo, Fayza January 2023 (has links)
In the restaurant industry, there are requirements and standards about how a waitress should treat the restaurant's guests. These demands are part of the work role and affect the waitress's emotions and self-esteem, which creates an emotional burden for the waitresses. To alleviate the emotional strain, they use coping strategies to keep their self-esteem in balance and continue working in the profession. The purpose of the study is based on a social psychological perspective to gain a deeper understanding of how social interaction within the restaurant industry affects the waitress's self-esteem and emotions. The study is based on a qualitative method with 10 semi-structured interviews that were conducted at the respondents' workplaces. The theories in the study focused on self-esteem, emotional labor and coping strategies. The study used a thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes in the collected material. The results showed that working as a waitress creates an emotional burden, and affects the waitress's self-esteem. Therefore, waitresses used various coping strategies to manage the emotional burden in the workplace. Some important factors that influence self-esteem and emotions are customer service, feedback from guests and the manager, and working according to professional requirements. The respondents dealt with the negative emotions with the help of social support and they recovered in their free time to find a balance between work life and free time.

A Study of the Outcomes of Stress Management Training in Ministerial Programs of Higher Education

Shirley, Philip E. (Philip Elwood) 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation studies the outcomes that higher education courses and seminars in stress management have on the stress levels of pastors. It identifies stress level differences between a sample of pastors who have and who have not been trained in stress management. The instrument that was used to assess the levels of stress was the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The Inventory is a twenty-two item dual-rating instrument that measures the frequency and intensity of three aspects of the burnout syndrome: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of personal accomplishment. Demographic questions were used to determine the respondents' sex, age, education, and experience in the clergy. These questions were asked for descriptive purposes only. In addition, questions were asked that would determine whether or not the pastors had had stress management training.

Sociální opora a její vliv na depersonalizaci, pracovní spokojenost a prožívaný zdravotní stav u sester na intenzivní péči / Social support and its influence on depersonalization, job satisfaction and subjectively experienced health condition of nurses on intensive

Blahníková, Věra January 2015 (has links)
This thesis will deal with social support perceived by intensive care unit nurses (from colleagues, family, friends and superiors) and its impact on job satisfaction, depersonalization and subjectively experienced health condition. Foreign research suggests that social support has crucial effect on amount of perceived stress, coping and quality of provided health care. Lack of support can also contribute to the development of psychosomatic diseases like headache, back pain and others. Main attention will be paid to the influence of social support on depersonalization (emotional hardness, apathy towards the patient), job satisfaction and intensive care nurses subjectively experienced health condition. Basic concepts, terms, constructs and variables will be defined in the theoretical part of this thesis. Current scientific findings about effects of social support on work and various aspects of intensive care nurses' lives will be summarized. Diagnostic methods and test used by author of this thesis will be also described. In the empirical part of the thesis, author will examine relationships between variables and will test hypothesis using statistical methods, mainly correlation analysis and ANOVA test. Some of the hypotheses were confirmed and others were not. However what is indisputable is the...

[en] STRANGE SHADOW IN VAIN MOVEMENTS: IMAGES OF POETIC WRITING IN CAMILO PESSANHA / [pt] ESTRANHA SOMBRA EM MOVIMENTOS VÃOS: IMAGENS DA ESCRITA POÉTICA EM CAMILO PESSANHA

IZABELA LEAL 17 February 2004 (has links)
[en] The objective of this work is to relate the poetry of Camilo Pessanha to a questioning about the art of poetry itself, analyzing the relationship between the feeling of time and the activity of poetic creation which may be perceived in his work, a relationship which can be established through the title of his only book of poems: Clepsydra. The clepsydra, an object connected to the counting of time attributed to the orators in ancient Greece, points, therefore, to a fusion between time and discourse, allowing us to engage in a reflection on the act of writing.

EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OCCUPATIONAL BURNOUT AND THE BEHAVIORAL WELL-BEING OF SOCIAL WORKERS

Pisapia, Damian A 01 June 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between occupational burnout and the behavioral well-being of social workers. Burnout is a multidimensional syndrome where workers experience feelings of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment as a consequence of work related stress and overwhelming job demands. Burnout can negatively affect organizational functioning, work performance, and pose significant health risks to workers. There are a limited number of studies focusing on the impact of occupational burnout on the behavioral well-being of workers. The findings of this study indicated that there was a significant relationship between burnout and behavioral well-being. Emotional exhaustion was found to negatively impact exercise frequency, which was consistent with previous study findings. Depersonalization was positively correlated to the number of hours of sleep and the frequency of self-care activities participants engaged in. The effects of depersonalization on sleep and self-care activities suggest that workers may engage in these activities as a way to cope with feelings of depersonalization on the job.
