Exploring the Impact of Dynamic Design Elements on User Experience in Digital Interfaces : Understanding the Role of Dynamic Elements

Al-Hufah Al-Otaibi, Abdulmalek, Kiaee, Kiarash January 2024 (has links)
This study seeks to investigate the subtle impact that dynamic design elements in web interfaces have on users, particularly on users' decision-making and engagement. In contrast to most current research efforts, which predominantly address mobile applications, the current study aims to direct the focus on web-based environments to reveal special behavioral responses evoked by dynamic design features. The study adopts a comprehensive mixed-methods approach that encompasses qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. This includes A/B testing on the prototypes of web interfaces, which provides the base for measuring engagement objectively from users. A very salient point here is that animations increase user retention by 30%, which shows that well-applied dynamic elements can advance the stickiness and interaction users would have with a digital platform. On the other hand, the thesis also mentions the risks related to such design elements, like the ability to cause cognitive overload and distraction in case of non-judicious use of these elements. Through the account of user behavioral analysis in response to various implementations, the research provides useful insights to web designers and developers about how to use animations and transitions judiciously for navigational intuitiveness and responsiveness without hampering web interface usability. The present research also adds to theories for UX and user interface design (UID) by promoting the balanced integration of dynamic design elements. What was brought to the forefront was that research to understand the specific impacts of these elements can lead to more effective digital environments, tailored to foster user engagement that could support efficient processes of decision making. This thesis not only fills the academic gap related to digital interaction but also provides a practical guideline for the improvement of web interface design given user behavior and technology.

Gamification and online grocery shopping : a proposal to buy more fruit and vegetables.

Nasufovski, Harun January 2019 (has links)
Online grocery shopping is an ever-growing service in Sweden, as more people are starting to purchase their food online. Despite this, the Swedes do not eat well since over 51% of the population is overweight or obese, which can lead to serious diseases. The inclusion of fruits and vegetables in the daily diet has proven to be the optimal way to counteract obesity and diseases. Since year 2010, the term gamification has been formed and has meant that game elements have been used in different contexts outside of games. Studies have shown that the implementation of gamification and game elements such as points, badges and leaderboards in various services has had a positive impact on learning, teaching and, above all, motivation. The purpose of the study was to investigate how gamification could motivate people to purchase more fruit and vegetables via an online grocery shopping site. The study was conducted with a high-fidelity prototype containing the game elements badges, leaderboards, avatars, points, levels and feedback and was tested on six participants who had previously purchased food online. The qualitative methods of observation and interview were used to generate the result. The study resulted in the participants experiencing increased motivation to purchase more fruit and vegetables and showed that gamification could also be implemented in online grocery shopping services.

The digital nudge : A study of the design principles in digital nudging and it´s presence on ascendant online stores / Den digitala knuffen : En studie av designprinciper inom digital nudging och deras närvaro på dominerande nätbutiker

Delden, Anna, Persson, Ellen January 2018 (has links)
Digital nudging is a relatively new phenomenon that is increasingly mentioned and demanded in human-computer interaction. The concept originates from behavioral economics and aims to help individuals make better decisions that are beneficial to the individual as well as the society, by making subtle changes to the environment in which the decision is made. Nudging implies to pushing people in the right direction and affecting them in different types of decision making. Digital nudging aims at applying the user interface design element to guide people's decisions in digital environments. This thesis presents a study of digital nudging in the form of the six design principles in the user interface of e-commerce sites through the method cognitive walkthrough. It is based on theories of mainly digital nudging but also persuasive design and user experience with connections to psychological aspects. The conclusion of the study has shown that principles in digital nudging exists in e-stores interfaces. The study aims to develop frameworks for an alternative way of implementing digital nudging and to contribute to more knowledge in the field.

Vikström, Emma, Karlström, Rebecka January 2020 (has links)
The task manager Habitica was studied to explain 1) How Habitica motivates by satisfying the psychological needs identified by SDT and 2) Why users keep using Habitica. Based on theories of gamification, motivation and the theoretical framework METUX an interview study was conducted with 10 participants followed by a thematic analysis. Personalization, avatars, responsibility toward party members and different rewards were identified as motivating factors. However, some participants experienced the opposite with some of the factors mentioned. The motivating factors identified by the study could be connected to one or more psychological needs, based on the theoretical framework of the study. More research is necessary to determine if the findings apply to other settings outside of the context of the study.
