Understanding user interaction problems with wireless connection via research through design

People frequently have problems making multiple devices work together. In this thesis, I use the Research‐through‐Design approach to understand the issues and propose solutions. Through an iterative series of investigations, the problems people have with the connection of multiple devices has been examined, including usability issues, difficulties with the sequential connection procedure, and difficulties performing an action. I found non‐expert users to have difficulties with interpreting and evaluating the devices’ interaction status regarding the sequence of the connection procedure. When an evaluation problem occurs, they have problems dealing with the required sequence or diagnosing the error in their interactions. The problem understanding was examined from additional cases. The comprehension of the problems allowed me to generate design implications and propose a design solution. I proposed two implications with which to solve the stated problem. I suggested helping users evaluate device interaction and reduce unnecessary user interactions. A design framework was suggested as a solution by providing diagrammatic representations of system interaction and signals revealing device status. I then assessed the suggested solutions using paper prototypes, and demonstrated their effectiveness. The improved interfaces helped users evaluate device connection status so they may determine how to proceed with sequential interaction. With the Research‐through‐Design approach constructing knowledge by integrating theories and hypothesis, I found the feature of user‐multiple device interaction in which a user is required to manage the interaction between the devices. A single device cannot aid the user interaction. In the dissertation, I proposed a desirable state of user interaction, which is achieved by two devices revealing connection states together so that a user can earn a useful system image.

Flexible Learning: The Design Thinking Process as an Educational Tool

Flexible Learning is a personal investigation of the relationship between the design-thinking process and standardized primary education. The problem-solving methods used in graphic design, are studied as a means of enhancing skills among students—skills that are not generally being developed, some of which are creativity, engagement, collaboration, evaluation, refinement, and presentation techniques. While I access and synthesize information from my clients, a child also access and synthesize information from his or her teacher. When a client comes to me with a design request, I research, create, and then present the most appropriate solution. In the classroom, this kind of thinking process is also possible when the teacher offers students the opportunity to solve a problem, usually in the form of a project. I will explain how more intensive and creative application of design thinking process could expand the horizons for whole brain learning and creative thinking among students.

Estabelecimento de startups: proposta de framework cíclico para geração e refinamento de conceitos e estruturação da operação inicial de negócios inovadores. / .

Atualmente as organizações enfrentam grandes desafios como por exemplo a necessidade de reduzir o ciclo de vida de produtos e serviços, enfrentar exigências de qualidade superiores, menores tempo de desenvolvimento e menores custos de produção, devendo buscar a excelência produtiva mas, contraditoriamente também sendo cobradas pelo desenvolvimento de inovações e pela busca de maior agilidade. Neste cenário verifica-se o aumento na importância das startups, organizações que exploram novas oportunidades no mercado e que apresentam grande potencial para geração de inovações radicais. Apesar do aumento da sua relevância, ainda existem poucos modelos elaborados e validados, capazes de auxiliar estas organizações em seu processo inicial de estruturação de operação. Como consequência, atualmente as startups podem adotar técnicas inadequadas à sua realidade, reconhecidamente burocráticas, inflexíveis e pouco inovadoras. Buscando reduzir esta lacuna de conhecimento este estudo propõe um Framework Cíclico que visa contribuir com as startups em seu processo de geração e refinamento de conceitos e na estruturação inicial da sua operação, tendo como objetivo facilitar o atingimento do sucesso. Para o seu desenvolvimento inicialmente foi realizada ampla revisão bibliográfica, resultando numa primeira versão do Framework. Esta versão foi utilizada para a realização de dois estudos de caso que, em conjunto com a qualificação, resultou em alterações no seu layout porém manteve suas características essenciais. Uma segunda versão do Framework Cíclico foi avaliada em um painel que contou com a participação de 8 especialistas em startups, profissionais conceituados cujas observações foram analisadas utilizando de Análise Qualitativa, resultando numa mudança de etapa no Framework, incorporando o Canvas do Value Proposition Design e algumas contribuições no detalhamento das etapas. Com a terceira versão do Framework estruturada foi realizada uma survey que contou com a participação de 88 empreendedores de startups consideradas de sucesso. Para isto, de forma a estabelecer a amostra da pesquisa foram selecionadas startups com existência de mais de um ano, já aceleradas ou em processo de aceleração em aceleradoras brasileiras. Os resultados obtidos foram trabalhados com aplicação de Análise Qualitativa e Análise Fatorial e, como resultados, ocorreu a mudança de posicionamento de uma etapa, além da contribuições que destacam alguns pontos de atenção no desenvolvimento das diferentes etapas. Assim, foi obtida a versão final do Framework Cíclico, correspondendo ao objetivo proposto para este estudo, auxiliar na geração e refinamento de conceitos e estruturação da operação inicial de negócios inovadores. / Currently organizations face major challenges such as the need to reduce product and service life cycles, to obtain higher quality standards and lower production costs, aiming to obtain excellence in production but, contradictorily, aiming to develop significant innovations and to foster more agility. In this scenario it is possible to observe the growing importance of startups, emerging companies that explore new market opportunities and have big potential for the generation of radical innovations. Despite the increase of their relevance, until now there are few structured and validated models, capable of contributing with these organizations in their initial phases. As a consequence, currently startups can only adopt techniques that are inadequate to their reality since they are bureaucratic, inflexible and little innovative. Aiming to reduce this gap of knowledge, this research proposes a Cyclic Framework that aims to contribute with the startups in their process of generation and refinement of concepts and in the initial structuration of its operation, in order to facilitate the achievement of success. For the development of the first version an extensive literature review was performed. This version of the Framework was applied in two case studies that, in conjunction with the qualification, resulted in changes in the layout of the Framework but maintained its essencial characteristics. This second version of the Cyclic Framework was evaluated in a panel that counted with the participation of 8 specialists in startups, recognized professionals whose observations have been analyzed with the application of qualitative analysis. As a result a stage changed in Framework, including Canvas of Value Proposition Design and some other contributions were incorporated into the detailed steps of the Framework. Considering this third version of the Framework structured and validated, a final survey was performed and 88 entrepreneurs of startups participated. The sample for this research was selected at startups with existence of more than one year, that are already accelerated or in acceleration process at Brazilian accelerators. The obtained results were analyzed with the application of Qualitative Analysis and quantitative Factor Analysis and, as results, there was a change in the position of a step and the improvement of points of attention in the development of different steps. As a result the final version of the Cyclic Framework was developed and the main objective of this study was obtained, the development of a tool to contribute in the generation and improvement of concepts and structuring in the initial operation of innovative businesses.

O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar a adequação e o alinhamento da metodologia de desenvolvimento de produtos de acordo com o tipo de projeto, comparando-se projetos baseados em Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) e Design Thinking (DT) em uma mesma empresa. Optou-se pela estratégia de pesquisa qualitativa, com o desenvolvimento de um estudo de caso, realizado no período de dezembro de 2015 a março de 2016, em uma empresa multinacional do setor financeiro, que utiliza ambas as metodologias. O estudo envolveu a análise de dados de oito projetos, sendo quatro DFSS e quatro DT. Para a interpretação e síntese dos resultados, utilizou-se a estatística descritiva e o teste de mediana de Mood. Os resultados indicam que o tipo de projeto e o tipo de problema afetam a escolha da metodologia, sendo possível refletir sobre a utilização de abordagens soft mais voltadas para negócios, ao invés da aplicação de abordagens hard. Projetos DT estão mais alinhados aos conceitos de projetos soft e comumente são utilizados na solução de problemas abertos. Por outro lado, projetos DFSS estão mais alinhados aos conceitos de projetos hard e geralmente são utilizados na solução de problemas fechados. Verificou-se também que o questionário de pesquisa pode ser empregado como um framework de análise para a seleção correta da metodologia a ser utilizada. / The aim of this study is to analyze the appropriateness and the alignment of product development methodology according to the project type, comparing projects based on Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Design Thinking (DT) in the same company. A qualitative research strategy was applied, with the development of a case study, carried out from December 2015 to March 2016, in a multinational financial company, which applies both approaches. The study involved eight projects data analysis, four DFSS and four DT. To the interpretation and synthesis of the results, descriptive statistics and the Mood median test was applied. The results indicate that the project type and the problem type affect the choice of the methodology and it is possible to reflect on the use of soft approaches more focused on business instead of applying hard approaches. DT projects are more aligned with the concepts of soft projects and are commonly used in solving ill structured problems. On the other hand, DFSS projects are more aligned with the concepts of hard projects and are commonly used to solve well structured problems. It was also found that the survey questionnaire can be used as an analytical framework for the correct selection of the methodology to be applied.

Thinking styles influence on the individual\'s readiness for adopting design thinking in organizations / A influência de estilos de pensamento sobre a prontidão individual para adoção de design thinking nas organizações

Private sector, government and the academia have been recognizing the value of a \'designerly\' approach to business problems, in the context that the traditional technical-rationality has been insufficient to address issues in the contemporary volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment. Design Thinking has been growing since Tim Brown, CEO of a prestigious global design agency, started advocating and disseminating this approach in the business environment ten years ago. As more organizations are implementing Design Thinking (DT), this research aims to analyze the relation between individuals\' Readiness for adopting DT in organizations and their thinking styles, namely Rationality and Experientiality. From the literature review, some authors characterize Design Thinking by its focus on human needs, open objectives so creativity can arise, iteratively, reliance on qualitative methods, intuition and experience, - to name some of the characteristics. Accordingly, the initial hypothesis of this research stated that individuals with high Experientiality score would be the ones with higher Readiness to adopt Design Thinking. A quantitative survey was designed based on existing instruments in the academic literature. For assessing the thinking styles, the Rationality-Experientiality Inventory (REI) developed by Pacini & Epstein (1999) was integrally applied; for measuring the individual\'s Readiness for adoption of Design Thinking, the Readiness for Organizational Change Measure (ROCM) developed by Holt, Armenakis, Feild, & Harris (2007b) was partially applied; and to collect the respondents\' understanding on Design Thinking, questions were designed based on the paper published by Glen, Suciu & Baughn (2014). The sample size had 251 valid respondents from the state of Sao Paulo (Brazil), with declared knowledge or experience with Design Thinking. One-way ANOVA was conducted to determine significant differences within the terciles of Rationality, Experientiality and Readiness-for-change and between the thinking styles terciles and the score of Readiness for adopting Design Thinking; Regression Analysis was conducted to determine, among all variables in the research, which are the ones explaining Readiness for adopting Design Thinking. The results pointed out that the group of individuals with high score of Rationality (third tercile) presented higher Readiness for adopting Design Thinking, as well as the third and first terciles of Experientiality. Furthermore, when Rationality and Experientiality scores were analyzed together, both thinking styles did have influence on the individuals\' Readiness for adopting Design Thinking. The understanding of the level of individual\'s thinking styles provides some light on the challenges ahead regarding the acceptance of Design Thinking. Smoother and more efficient change management programs can be designed for educational programs relying on Design Thinking or for departments in organizations implementing Design Thinking. Construção de uma cadeia sustentável para destinação de resíduos da construção civil (RCC) pelo método do Design Tthinking

Considerando que, com vistas à sustentabilidade, a questão dos resíduos sólidos deve ser tratada sob a perspectiva integrada na qual é fundamental a noção de corresponsabilidade, este trabalho tem como objetivo propor um modelo de cadeia para tratamento e destinação de resíduos. Para tanto, foi aplicada a técnica de storytelling e a metodologia do Design Thinking para o desenho de cenários econômicos e o desenvolvimento de personagens, os quais possibilitaram a indicação de medidas consideradas de baixa e de alta efetividade para aferir a viabilidade e a sustentabilidade de uma usina de tratamento de resíduos. Os dados obtidos permitiram a proposição de um modelo de negócios híbrido, onde o enfoque encontrado deslocou-se da mera criação de uma usina de tratamento para a implantação de um sistema cooperativo de triagem, separação e tratamento dos resíduos, mais resistente às variações de conjuntura econômica. / Considering that, with a view to sustainability, the issue of solid waste should be dealt with under the integrated perspective in which the notion of co-responsibility is fundamental, this work aims to propose a chain model for the treatment and disposal of waste. For that, the technique of storytelling and the methodology of Design Thinking for the design of economic scenarios and the development of characters were applied, which enabled the indication of measures considered of low and high effectiveness to assess the viability and the sustainability of a waste treatment plant. The data obtained allowed the proposition of a hybrid business model, where the approach found shifted from the mere creation of a treatment plant to the implantation of a cooperative system of sorting, separation and treatment of the residues, more resistant to the conjunctural variations economic development.

Processo de decisão estratégica em uma empresa empreendedora: um estudo de caso da empresa Ciao Mao / Strategic decision-making process in an entrepreneurial company: the case study of the company Ciao Mao

O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar o processo de tomada de decisão de um empreendedor de sucesso, desde a decisão de criação da empresa até a sua implementação, identificando as boas práticas realizadas. A empresa estudada foi a Ciao Mao, marca de calçados brasileira fundada em 2007, que teve destaque ao conquistar diversos prêmios de design no Brasil e exterior e obter reconhecimento por seu caráter inovador, sendo considerada em publicações especializadas como um dos grandes destaques do empreendedorismo nacional. A empreendedora em questão, Priscila Callegari, continua na direção executiva da organização desde sua criação e é a principal tomadora das decisões estratégicas. Por essa empresária ter uma formação em design e não em administração, o processo de criação da empresa não seguiu com rigor nenhum modelo de administração estratégica, porém foi notável o processo estruturado de pensamento em suas tomadas de decisões e uma habilidade em gerar soluções inovadoras, sendo este o grande fator motivador para o presente trabalho. Seguindo a proposta de um mestrado profissional, o trabalho faz uma análise da prática para a teoria, tendo natureza exploratória e abordagem qualitativa. A metodologia utilizada foi a de um estudo de caso único realizado em profundidade com um observador participante, sendo este o próprio autor do trabalho que também ocupa o cargo de gerente comercial e marketing da Ciao Mao desde 2009. A análise verificou convergências e divergências entre as teorias de tomada de decisão estratégica e o caso prático, assim como identificou afinidades com as teorias de design thinking e design estratégico. Observou-se que uma empresa empreendedora tem desafios diferentes de uma grande corporação. Ao tratarmos do processo de tomada de decisão, um empreendedor tem a vantagem de possuir mais liberdade nas suas escolhas, porém tem o desafio de assumir os riscos integralmente, em especial com produtos inovadores, onde a previsibilidade de resultados é baixa e os riscos são inerentes. Dado a restrição de recursos de um empreendedor, o desafio em toda decisão estratégica foi viabilizar a existência da empresa sem perder o senso do possível, ou seja, vislumbrando novas soluções criativas e assumindo riscos de forma consciente. A análise do caso mostrou que nem sempre a solução ideal é a solução viável. Os estudos de teorias de design demonstraram que uma das principais contribuições do designer é sua capacidade de identificar necessidades não atendidas ou mal atendidas e a partir desse conhecimento gerar soluções criativas para solucioná-las com os recursos disponíveis. Outro fator identificado foi a importância do preparo para a criação de um negócio sustentável. Através do estudo realizado também se concluiu que uma das principais habilidades da empreendedora foi ser uma líder agregadora. A empresária tinha autoconhecimento das suas competências e limitação, e soube otimizar os diversos elos da cadeia de valor articulando os envolvidos para um objetivo comum. Para isso buscou entender os impactos que suas decisões tinham a cada um dos participantes dessa rede e desenvolveu soluções criativas agregando valor em cada um dos elos. O trabalho traz como contribuição principal a descrição de uma série de práticas adotadas pela empresária no processo de tomada de decisão estratégica que podem servir de inspiração para outros empreendedores. / The present study has the purpose of analyzing the decision-making process of a successful entrepreneur and identifying good practices adopted by this professional. The case studied is of a Brazilian footwear brand, Ciao Mao, founded in 2007. The enterprise has won five design awards in Brazil and abroad and it was considered one of the greatest highlights of Brazilian innovative entrepreneurship by several specialized publications. The entrepreneur, Priscila Callegari, has been the executive director of the organization since its start; therefore she is the main responsible for the decision-making of every strategy of the company. She didn\'t have a Business Administration background, she has graduated and worked as a designer her whole career, therefore the company in its creation did not strictly followed any strategic management model. However there was evidences that she had a structured thinking process in her decision-making that generated innovative solutions. Following the proposal of a professional master\'s degree, the paper made an analysis from practice to theory. It has an exploratory nature, a qualitative approach and it used the methodology of a single case study in depth with a participant observer. The author of this research holds the position of sales and marketing manager of Ciao Mao in the past eight years. The analysis verified convergences and divergences between theories of strategic decision-making and the practical case, as well as it identified affinities with theories of design thinking and strategic design. The study of the case showed that when dealing with the decision-making process, an entrepreneur had the advantage of having more freedom in her choices, but she had the responsibility of taking full risk for every decision. This matter is especially important when dealing with innovative products which has low predictability of results. Every strategic decision taken by the entrepreneur had to be well thought and bring new creative solutions while taking risks in a conscious way. Since she had restricted resources of time, team and money, the viable solution was not always the ideal one. The study showed that one of the main contributions of a designer in an organization is her ability to identify unmet needs and generate creative solutions to solve them with the available resources. The analysis also concluded that one of the main skills of the studied entrepreneur was her ability to be an aggregator leader. The entrepreneur had self-knowledge of her skills and limitation, and knew how to optimize the various links in the value chain by articulating all of those parties involved to a common goal. In order to do this, she had to understand the impacts that her decisions had on each one of the participants of this network and she developed creative solutions adding value in each of the links. The main contribution of the work is the description of a series of practices adopted by this businesswoman in the process of strategic decision making that can serve as inspiration for other entrepreneurs.

Integrating behavioural science and design thinking : development and evaluation of a mobile intervention to increase vegetable consumption

Poor diet including inadequate vegetable consumption is among the leading causes of death in the US and UK. Mobile applications (apps) have been heralded as a potentially transformative tool for delivering behavioural nutrition interventions at scale, but most have yet to incorporate theory-based strategies known to drive changes in health behaviours or undergo systematic testing to demonstrate their effectiveness. Moreover, published frameworks to guide the development of such technologies have yet to integrate best practices from academia and industry. The aim of this dissertation was therefore to introduce a process for guiding the development of more effective mobile interventions and to apply that process in the development and evaluation of a mobile application to increase vegetable consumption. This dissertation introduced IDEAS (Integrate, DEsign, Assess, Share), a step-by-step process for integrating behavioural theory, design thinking, and evaluation to guide the development of more effective mobile health interventions. IDEAS was then applied in the iterative development of Vegethon, a mobile app to increase vegetable consumption among overweight adults. Behavioural theory and two stages of qualitative interviews with participants (n=18; n=14) shaped intervention conception and refinement. The final mobile app enabled easy self-monitoring and incorporated 18 behaviour change techniques including goal setting, feedback, social comparison, prompts, framing, and identity. A pilot randomized controlled trial among overweight adults (n=17) was conducted and indicated the initial acceptance, feasibility, and efficacy of the intervention, showing significantly greater consumption of vegetables among the intervention vs. control condition after 12 weeks (adjusted mean difference: 7.4 servings; 95% CI: 1.4, 13.5; p=0.02). A more substantially powered randomized controlled trial among overweight adults (n=135) was conducted and similarly found significantly greater daily vegetable consumption in the intervention vs. control condition (adjusted mean difference: 2.0 servings; 95% CI: 0.2, 3.8, p=0.03). These findings show, for the first time in a rigorous randomized controlled trial, the efficacy of a stand-alone theory-based mobile app to increase vegetable consumption. Given the improved health outcomes associated with greater vegetable consumption, these data indicate the need for longer-term evaluations of Vegethon and similar technologies among overweight adults and other suitable target groups. Theory-based mobile apps may present a low-cost and readily scalable tool for delivering behavioural health interventions. The IDEAS framework may be useful to investigators in the development of their own mobile health interventions.

Para tanto, esta pesquisa apresenta uma abordagem qualitativa de caráter exploratório, que conta com pesquisa bibliográfica - que oferece aporte teórico aos temas relacionados; etapa complementar quantitativa através de pesquisa survey - que buscou verificar percepções das escolas privadas sobre design, inovação e Design Thinking; seminário - realizado com instituições privadas a nível de ensino fundamental e médio, para apresentação de resultados prévios obtidos e ampliar a discussão sobre design e educação; e investigação do tipo estudo de caso junto aos Colégios Luterano da Paz e Luterano São Paulo - a fim de melhor compreender como o Design Thinking poderia contribuir para o contexto educacional de Porto Alegre/RS. Como principais resultados, cabe destacar o design atuando como um mediador na composição de estratégias para a troca e geração de novas ideias, bem como na identificação e solução de problemas, ao tempo em que desperta a comunidade escolar para a cultura colaborativa que, por sua vez, é necessário para inovar na educação. Para além da discussão, apresenta-se um quadro de referência de Design Thinking para ser utilizado por escolas na identificação e solução de problemas internos, de forma exploratória e criativa. / This study aims to discuss the contributions of the strategic design perspective in education, through the Design Thinking approach to support teachers in theplanning of teaching and learning strategies, due the transformations driven by the technology advancement that, in turn, modifies the school environment. For such purpose this research presents a qualitative exploratory approach, which includes literature review - that offers theoretical supportto related topics; complementary quantitative phase through survey research - that sought to verify the private schools’ perceptions on design, innovation and Design Thinking; seminar - performed with private institutions in the level of elementary and secondary education, to present preliminary findings and broaden the discussion about design and education; and a case study investigation with the schools Luterano da Paz and Luterano São Paulo- in order to better understand how Design Thinking could contribute to the educational context of Porto Alegre / RS. As main results it is worth mentioning the design acting as a mediator in the composition of strategies for the exchange and generation of new ideas, as well in the identification and solution of problems, by the time that arouses the school community for collaborative culture that, in turn, is necessary to innovate in education. In addition to this discussion, it is presented a framework of Design Thinking to be utilized in schools, in the identification and solution of internal problems, in an exploratory and creative way.

Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa, de caráter exploratório, utilizando o estudo de caso, junto a uma escola de educação básica da rede privada de Porto Alegre. As fontes de dados que subsidiaram a análise desta investigação, contemplam a pesquisa documental e pesquisa de campo, onde foi desenvolvido um Seminário, realizado com os profissionais do caso em estudo e com aplicação de questionário com questões abertas. A segunda fase abrangeu a observação direta na realização de benchmarking, onde foram entrevistados, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, os gestores de três instituições de ensino com práticas inovadoras de gestão. Foram discutidos integradamente os dados gerados no desenvolvimento do estudo, levando em conta o contexto onde a unidade de análise e as unidades de observação estão inseridas; os ambientes correlatos; a estrutura de gestão; e a percepção de colaboradores e gestores acerca do tema. Os resultados obtidos permitem apontar, que por meio do Design Thinking, é possível explorar novos percursos na ação estratégica da gestão, com a contribuição de indicadores e intervenções que representam alternativas para romper com abordagens mais tradicionais e transformar qualitativamente o processo de gestão. / The current study aims to understand and explore the contribution of Design Thinking for the innovation in strategic management in education. Therefore a qualitative survey was conducted, with an exploratory approach, using the case study at an elementary private school in Porto Alegre. The data sources that supported the analysis of this investigation include documentary research and field research, where a seminar was developed and conducted with the professionals involved in the case study and the use of a questionnaire with open questions. The second phase included the direct observation in carrying out benchmarking, where the managers of three educational institutions with innovative management practices were interviewed by means of semi-structured interviews. The data generated in the development of the study were integrally discussed taking into account the context in which the unit of the analysis and the units of observation were inserted, the related environments, the management structure, and the perception of employees and managers on the subject. The findings may point out that through Design Thinking is possible to explore new paths in the management strategic action plan, having the contribution of indicators and interventions that represent alternatives to break with more traditional approaches and change the management process qualitatively.
