Une méthode d'optimisation multicritère pour le Design For Manufacturing : application aux portes d'avion / A multicriteria optimization method for Design for Manufacturing : application to an aircraft door

Actuellement, le marché aéronautique est en constante augmentation. Pour faire face à cela, les avionneurs doivent se restructurer et revoir les processus de fabrication des pièces. En effet, il est nécessaire d’augmenter les cadences et réduire les prix tout en conservant les performances des pièces (poids et résistance mécanique). Cependant, ces trois objectifs sont contradictoires et un compromis est difficile à trouver. Ces travaux de thèse abordent cette problématique dans le cadre du CORAC. Ils proposent une manière originale d’optimiser une pièce de structure aéronautique qui vise à développer une nouvelle approche de la conception de pièces et de processus de fabrication pour tendre vers des solutions de compromis performantes. Pour ce faire, une méthodologie multicritère en trois étapes est proposée. D’abord, l’expertise industrielle est formalisée afin de formuler le problème mathématiquement. Ensuite, un algorithme génétique est utilisé afin de déterminer une population de solutions dont les performances sont placées sur un front de Pareto.Enfin, une étape de choix parmi la population finale prenant en compte le contexte industriel est mise en place. Cette méthodologie est appliquée à une porte d’avion moyen-courrier fabriquée par matriçage puis usinage. Dans ce cas, elle permet de choisir la solution la plus adaptée au contexte industriel parmi mille solutions de compromis. / Nowadays, the aeronautical market grows constantly. To face this, aircraft industry has to restructure and the manufacturing processes must be revised. Indeed, production rate must increase and manufacturing cost decrease while keeping the performances of the parts (weight and mechanical resistance). These objectives are contradictory and compromises must be found. This thesis broaches this problematic in relation to the CORAC. A novel method to optimize an aeronautical structural part and its manufacturing process is developed to tend toward performing compromise solutions. To do so, a three steps multi-criteria method is proposed. First, the industrial expertise is formalized to mathematically express the problem. Then, a genetic algorithm is used to determine a population in which every solution is located on a single Pareto front. At least, a decision step is set up to find the best solution in the population considering the industrial environment of the part. This methodology is applied to an aircraft door manufactured by forging and machining. In this case, it allows choosing the solution that fit the most the industrial environment within a one thousand solutions’ population.

Life Cycle Perspective in relation to ISO 14001 : 2015 and associated impacts of Design For Environment (DFE) and Sustainable development

ISO 14001:2015 is a certifiable environmental management standard applicable to any enterprise, large or small, in all fields of manufacturing or trades and services. It is the updated version of the previous ISO 14001:2004 standard. The updated standard contains a new High Level Framework which is expected to be used in the future by all ISO management system standards. ISO 14001:2015 sets out to implement methodologies such as the environmental management system and prescribes certification criteria including environmental policy and goals, important environmental issues, pollution reduction and continuous improvement of environmental efficiency. This report starts by looking into the documentation regarding life cycle perspective in the context of the ISO 14001:2015 standard. The revised model adopts a holistic approach across the value chain and encourages companies to accept a "life cycle perspective" with regard to the product and service design and development process. The methodology of life-cycle assessment (LCA) is also explored. The report goes on to examine another important aspect in environmental management which is the concept of Design For Environment (DFE). More specifically it is examined whether adhering to DFE principles can also help companies to adapt to the ISO 14001:2015 requirements. The concept of sustainable development in the context of ISO 14001 was given due precedence and it was found that ISO certified organizations will have an implicit awareness of sustainability because of the way ISO 14001 is structured. Utveckling av arbetsmetodik för Design for Assembly genom en exempelprodukt - För produktutveckling

ESAB har beslutat att analysera om en Design For Assembly (DFA) metodik går att implementera med syfte att sänka monteringstiden och utveckla deras produktutvecklings-process (PU-process). Målet för det här projektet är således att presentera hur en arbetsmetodik inom DFA kan tillämpas genom att undersöka en exempelprodukt, rullbock. För att förstå DFA och dess relaterade områden genomfördes en litteraturstudie. Studien utfördes för att få en djupare förståelse där undersökningar gjordes inom vetenskapliga artiklar, böcker och webbkällor. Undersökningarna utfördes med mål att samla information om andra lyckade DFA-implementeringar, tillämpningsområden och riktlinjer. Genomförandet följer en PU-process med DFA som fokus. Till en början av PU-processen framställdes en kravspecifikation och en rotorsaksanalys. En DFA-metodik utnyttjades för att framställa konceptförslag för rullbocken. Metodiken grundar sig i de riktlinjer och frågor som presenterats i litteraturstudien. Resultatet presenteras i former av CAD-ritningar och riktlinjer. CAD-ritningar framställs för att få en förståelse över konceptförslagen och hur metodiken har tillämpats. Riktlinjerna är kortare punkter som bör övervägas av användaren vid utveckling av produkter. Lösningarna viktades mot varandra med hjälp av Pughs matris. Syftet och frågeställningen för projektet har besvarats. En arbetsmetodik och riktlinjer för DFA presenterades genom att undersöka exempelprodukten och en litteraturstudie inom området. / ESAB has decided to analyze whether a Design for Assembly (DFA) methodology can be implemented with the aim of reducing assembly time and developing their product development process (PD-process). The aim of this project is thus to present how a working methodology within DFA can be applied by investigating an example product, roller bed. To understand DFA and its related areas, a literature study was conducted. The study was conducted to gain a deeper understanding where research was done in scientific articles, books, and web sources. The surveys were conducted with the aim of gathering information about other successful DFA implementations, areas of application and guidelines. The implementation follows a PD-process with DFA as the focus. At the beginning of the PD-process, a requirements specification and a rotor case analysis were created. A DFA methodology was used to produce concept proposals for the roller bed. The methodology is based on the guidelines and questions presented in the literature study. The results are presented in the form of CAD drawings and guidelines. CAD drawings were created to gain an understanding of the concept proposals and how the methodology has been applied. The guidelines are shorter steps that should be considered by the user when developing products. The solutions were weighted against each other using Pugh's matrix. The purpose and question of the project have been answered. A working methodology and guidelines for DFA were presented by examining the example product and a literature study in the area.

Developing a grading tool for sustainable design of structural systems in buildings

Construction is known for consuming large quantities of raw materials and high amounts of energy. In 2018, the construction industry was responsible for 6% of global energy consumption, 11% of global CO2 emissions, and approximately 36% of the total waste in the European Union. These drawbacks are just a part of the gap between the construction sector and Sustainability, which can also be perceived as challenges to the industry and demands for new and innovative strategies to increase Sustainability. For example, recent efforts of EcoDesign on structural systems show a trend in the importance of materials efficiency, durability, adaptability, and reuse.    This thesis aims to create a set of guidelines that will help designers and other construction stakeholders apply Design for Deconstruction and Adaptability DfD/A principles to increase the knowledge of how structural design and structural systems in buildings can be designed to promote Sustainability. For this purpose, a grading tool to assess structural systems based on the ISO 20887 was developed. The general methodology for this research was adapted from Design Research Methodology with a particular focus on the Product Development approach for the tool development. A literature Review was conducted in both scientific and grey literature to identify relevant information and current efforts on sustainable design of structural systems and application of DfD/A principles on the construction sector. Three additional methods for data collection were used: (1) questionnaire for identification of customer needs and expectations, (2) benchmarking to identify similar tools, strategies, and certifications systems that include sustainability performance in buildings; and (3) workshops with the purpose to rate the usefulness quality of the tool based on the application of the tool by potential users in different case studies.  A ready-to-use computer-based EcoDesign tool was developed. The assessment performed by this tool consists of an indicator system of DfD/A strategies to enhance sustainable development by improving material efficiency and stimulate a circular economy in the construction sector. A top-down approach was used for the concept generation, which starts with the ReBuilding Index as an indicator of sustainable performance for structural systems. This index is based on five categories defined on the relationship of the DfD/A principles with the design process of the structural system. A total of 20 principles are distributed in these categories, defined by 54 strategies to reach the goal of the principles.     The tool was tested by 11 potential users with different roles in the construction sector. Five case studies were selected to grade the design of five different typologies of structural systems. The usefulness quality of the tool was evaluated based on indicators of usability, utility, and user experience. It was found that developing the tool based on DfD/A principles and the ISO 20887 gave the tool a solid theoretical background and a flexible structure that can be used for sustainable design or as part of an extensive framework of certification systems or ecolabel programs. The tool accomplishes the goal of grading and helping to improve the structural design. However, during the evaluation of the tool, many barriers and difficulties of application were found. Therefore, these findings and obstacles are instead identified as challenges and turn them into opportunities for improvements in future versions of the tool. / InFutUReWood project

Varje år produceras mer än 10 miljoner ton kaffe i världen (www.ico.org) och Sverige är världens näst störst kaffedrickande nation med ca 80 ton kaffe på år, vilket motsvarar i snitt 3,5 koppar kaffe per person dagligen (www.kaffeinformation.se). Med en stor produktion tillkommer också en stor mängd avfall. När kaffebönor rostas får man ett restmaterial av kaffebönans skall, så kallad kaffechaff. I denna studie undersöks om detta spillmaterial vid kafferosterier kan få ett mervärde genom material driven design. Syftet är att minska avfall och skapa ett nytt material. Arbetet rör sig i områdena materialitet och hållbar utveckling och metod används Material Driven Design method (Karana et al., 2015) samt Material Driven Design for Sustainability (Bak-Andersen, 2018). Resultatet blev tre olika biologiskt nedbrytbara material, bland annat ett som kan användas som till engångsartiklar eller förpackningsmaterial. Studien visar på möjligheter att ge mervärde på restprodukter inom kafferosteri och skulle kunna användas som möjligt underlag till att se om spill från andra industrier skulle kunna få ett mervärde. / Every year, more than 10 million tonnes of coffee are produced in the world (www.ico.org) and Sweden is the world’s second largest coffee drinking nation with about 80 tonnes of coffee a year, which corresponds to an average of 3.5 cups of coffee per person daily (www.kaffeinformation.se). With a large production there is also a large amount of waste. When coffee beans are roasted, you get a residual material from the coffee bean shell, so-called coffee chaff. In this study, this waste material are investigate whether it can get added value through material driven design. The purpose is to reduce waste and create new material. The work moves in the areas of materiality and sustainable development, and the method is the Material Driven Design method (Karana et al., 2015) and Material Driven Design for Sustainability (Bak-Andersen, 2018). The result was three biodegradable materials, including one that can be used as a disposable or packaging material. The study shows opportunities to add value to residual products within coffee roasters and could be used as a possible basis to see if waste from other industries could gain added value.

Integrating Eco-design Thinking in Redesigning of a Communication Device : Eco-design strategies for sustainable product design and development

The current wave of environmental awareness in the market has led to an increase of sustainability demands by the consumers. The focus of manufacturing companies has increasingly shifted from end-of-pipe solutions to the environmental performance of products and services. Companies find themselves in a situation where they must simultaneously create value for consumers and be profitable while considering environmental considerations. A case study is performed to explore this issue from the perspective of several eco-design tools. The existing product development process of a DECT communication device is investigated through the lens of eco-design. The theory looks into the apparent benefits and unforeseen difficulties, barriers and other factors in adopting an eco-design approach amongst companies, particularly SMEs. An eco-design audit comprising assessments on organisation capacity and potential for eco-design is carried out. This is followed by the creation and implementation of a comprehensive eco-design tool to generate a simple yet effective checklist for corporations with operational strategies for sustainable product design. Since changes in the product development and/or production to accommodate a higher level of sustainability cannot be easily or readily implemented, the framework functions as a guide of strategies within different time-scopes.

The environmental impacts of the construction industry, and the built environment, as the end product of construction activity, are massive due to the extensive use of energy and resources. Sustainability and circular economy are recognized as the main solution to the existing environmental impacts of this industry and the main approach to the sustainable development of it. The transition of a construction project’s life cycle from a linear one starting with material processing and ending up at demolition stage to a real cyclic life cycle needs defining alternative end-of-life scenarios. Deconstruction as one of the alternative end-of-life scenarios is defined as salvaging material of a dismantled structure for reuse or recycling. Design for deconstruction refers to the importance of considering deconstruction as the end-of-life scenario in the design stage of structures. This thesis aims to define the existing challenges and opportunities in the deconstruction of timber structures by the study of cases in which dis- and re-assembly are done. The study also aims to measure deconstructability by developing an indicator system for design for deconstruction of volumetric timber structures based on design for disassembly principles existing in ISO 20887:2020 and the practical principles of the case studies. This is done by interviewing people at five different companies who were engaged in the dis- and re-assembly of structures. The study of these cases shows the gap between disassembly principles and real-world experience from a learn-from-practice point of view. The design project examines collaboratively what transformative climate-communication can look like, and whether conversations can be a possible form of activism. Stemming from a concern that extreme forms of activism and their depiction in media have the potential to highly polarize civil society, the project explores the navigation and negotiation of spaces of communication and interaction in empathetic and connective ways. In the project I look at conversations as an additional or alternative way to disruptive protest forms of activism, within the non-violent liberal civil-disobedience movement and explore how to design for empathy and agency in the context of facilitating and curating spaces, tools and methods. The project recognizes the importance of conversations in the context of shaping opinions, changing perspectives and influencing behavior, and thus their relevance in the context of mitigating and communicating the climate emergency. During the project different conversation tools and methods have been designed, tested and developed in the framework of several gatherings.

DIVIDE : En iterativ designprocess av en cirkulär möbel för kontor

I detta examensarbete har vi genomfört en designprocess och utvecklat ett tidigare projekt av en rumsavskiljare med inriktning i detta projekt på funktionalitet, form och estetik. Vi har arbetat utefter ett aktivitetsbaserat kontorslandskap där behovet varit att avskilja. I processen har vi lagt fokus på att följa behoven i ett kontorslandskap samt se till att den är produktionsanpassad och hållbar. Möbeln i det tidigare projektet gick inte att producera och uppfyllde inte behoven, vi har därför i det här projektet arbetat med att få en djupare förståelse kring detta. I denna rapport presenteras en rumsavskiljare anpassad för kontorsmiljö, med fokus på hållbarhet har den designats utifrån principerna Design for Assembly och Design for Disassembly men också med ett stort fokus på form och estetik. Den är konstruerad av enbart två material: varmpressat ull och pulverlackerat stål. Dessa två material kan beskrivas som kontraster till varandra, vilket är något vi arbetat med. Hårt möter mjukt, kallt möter varmt. Vi har lyckats få det kantiga, hårda och statiska stålet att upplevas mjuk, varm och dynamisk med hjälp av pressad ull. Ullet bidrar också till att rumsavskiljaren får ljudabsorberande egenskaper och kan därmed fungera som en ljudabsorbent.

Enhancing the Swedish Defence : Development of a Modernized Hanguard for AK 4B Battle Rifle

This master thesis report describes the development process of a modernized handguard for the AK4B battle rifle, which is the main armament for the Swedish Home Guard. The project was carried out in cooperation with ALTEN Sweden AB. The goal of the project was to develop a new, competitive handguard design and to establish a complete design documentation as a foundation for production. This documentation consisted of a final material selection, process plan with suitable manufacturing methods and engineering drawings. The project was initiated with a problem definition to establish a thorough understanding of the product to be improved and enabling a determination of aspects that might be of importance to the product development. From this, research areas could be selected and studied to acquire necessary insights to complete the project goals. The product development process implemented is mainly inspired by Ulrich & Eppinger, and includes the stages concept development, detail design and testing & refinement. Thus, well-established methodology was implemented, ensuring credibility and a qualitative result. Throughout the stages ofthe product development process, a product specification was established, before generating concepts and selecting a final candidate which were refined based on the selection of materials and elaborated process plan. Finally, a verification of the requirements was concluded using several methods to prove the performance of the product. The results presents a developed product fulfilling established requirements and includes required documentation for production. Overall, the product is considered to have great potential for customer satisfaction, and to perform well in a final testing according to military standards.
