Water | Desire: Design of a Responsible Urban Retreat in Georgetown, Washington, DC

Zimmerli, Tanya 26 April 2013 (has links)
The design of an urban retreat within an industrial building in Georgetown, DC provides an opportunity to experience water in the built environment. The location of the building between two bodies of water—the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Potomac River—creates an opportunity to connect water and the visitors. Management of the water to ensure responsible resource use was researched and accommodated in the design. Water is further used to shape the space and the moods created by the volumes, materials and finishes. The final project provides a luxurious shower and locker room, a series of pools, and a tea room, open to the sky, across three levels.

Differentiation, negative attributions and sexual desire in committed relationships

Dharnidharka, Prerana January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / School of Family Studies and Human Services / Amber V. Vennum / Sexual desire is important to personal and relational well-being but inevitably declines over time in committed relationships. Individuals, further, commonly report times when they desire more or less sex than their partners (desire discrepancy) which is negatively associated with both relationship and sexual satisfaction. How partner’s make meaning out of (i.e., attributions about their partner’s lower desire for sex) and respond (pursue, withdraw or engage) to moments of discrepant desire is likely influenced by the extent to which partners are able to maintain a clear sense of self in the context of physical and emotional closeness (i.e., their level of differentiation), although this has yet to be tested. Through two studies, I explored the types of attributions and behaviors in response to desire discrepancies and how negative attributions and behaviors mediate the link between differentiation and sexual desire. Specifically in Study 1, I analyzed open-ended responses from 463 participants, using deductive content analysis to examine types of negative attributions and behaviors in response to moments of desire discrepancy. In Study 2, using the findings from Study 1, I developed items to quantitatively measure specific negative attributions and behaviors in response to desire discrepancies. Using a sample of 511 participants, I refined the factor structure of the Desire Discrepancy Attributions and Behaviors Scale and used a path analysis to examine how differentiation is associated with sexual desire both directly and indirectly through negative attributions, emotions, and behaviors (pursue-withdraw). Results indicated that an individual’s level of differentiation is positively associated with sexual desire and this link is significantly mediated by negative attributions and certain negative behaviors. The clinical implications and areas for future research based on the findings of this study are discussed.

Keep It Up: The Things Within and Without

Centeno, Vanessa R 16 May 2014 (has links)
My art explores my attraction and repulsion to a commodity driven society. Paint Thing and Saint Thing are characters that I created to push my boundaries as a painter and question my process within painting. Working through my agitation, feeling of loss and confusion, I find that two parts need to be present: a belief in the process and the fear of it coming undone. I use painting, sculpture and video to question the materiality of canvas and paint. I incorporate plastic objects, glittery materials, and things that have ephemeral qualities. I am attracted to synthetic forms and objects when arranging them in my compositions. In my work I look closely at the social constructs and systems that bind us to the commodity driven market. I feel if we are to understand our current conditions, we must also include the impact and importance of things in our material world.

A função educativa no laço professor e bebê a partir do desejo: alcances e limites / The function of education tie teacher and baby from desire: reach and limitations

Brandão, Daniela Bridon dos Santos Reis 25 April 2016 (has links)
The thesis presented here, entitled \"The educational role in teacher tie and baby from the desire: scope and limits\" aims to investigate the place of desire in the meeting between teachers and infants, as well as monitor the effects of listening and intervention conducted by a psychoanalyst this meeting, focusing on the construction of an educational function. To monitor the effects of listening to the interventions of teachers and babies, we seek to identify Child Development Clinical Risk Indicators (Kupfer, et al, 2012) present or absent in the loop, which have become a reference for interventions. The development of the research was based on two assumptions. The first assumption refers to the participation of the nursery teacher in the psychic Baby constitution. We can vouch for the presentification of clinical indicators that there is inclusion of some teachers in the Other field for some babies. The point is that the teachers weave one subjectifying bond with some babies, keeping your present indicators. Ie the same teacher is snared differently with several babies who attends, looking like some become your favorite, and others, their unsuccessful. Teacher subjectivity of something seems to put the meeting with babies, determining often over their heads, these \"choices\" and its position in the speech. The second assumption refers to the possibility of turning the teacher\'s position in his meeting with babies through psychoanalytical listening and interventions to education, which can make the meetings with all babies - favorite or not - most fertile to establishment of the loop. Both assumptions have allowed the construction of the guiding question of this research as regards the place of desire in educational activities nursery teacher. You can make it in this teacher\'s bond with each baby and make it operator of an educational function with everyone? To answer our question, we built five chapters. At first, we made considerations about the place of the desire of institutional adult meeting and baby over time, in Brazil, from some documents and historical sources. The second chapter aimed to present some psychoanalytic concepts that provide theoretical basis for our question, such as the notion of desire and affection in psychoanalysis, narcissism and primary repression and the notion of ideal for me. In the third chapter we seek to build the notion of educational function of babies from the Borromean knot, which articulates the real records, Symbolic and Imaginary (Lacan, 1953/2005). The fourth chapter is a presentation of fundamental methodological concepts for psychoanalysis, as transfer and discursive spins and discusses teacher training possibilities from psychoanalysis. The fifth chapter presents vignettes of research, in which you can follow the interventions in the loop teachers and babies, as well as the construction of the educational function in the loop from these interventions

Da mãe a mulher : os circuitos do amor, desejo e gozo\" / On the woman and the mother : the circuits of love, desire and joy.

Lima, Glaucineia Gomes de 23 June 2006 (has links)
What does a woman want? This question has remained enigmatic in Freud´s work. Some psychoanalysts indicated maternity as one of the answers for the unsoundable question of being... a woman. The privileged discussion topic of this study is the articulation between femininity and maternity, in an investigation path of Freudian texts, of post-Freudian theories and Lacanian formulations. It consists of a clinical-theoretical study, motivated by questions originated in the psychoanalytical experience with female subjects, in face of the impasses of being a mother and a woman. Freud understood maternity as being submissive to the phallic function of a girl, but kept in open the question related to the enigma of femininity. The indictment of phallus remained with the post-Freudians who emphasized the role of the mother, from the discourse on maternal love. Lacan, when postulating on something else more than a father, promoted women´s sexuality, emphasizing the woman´s wish in the mother. To point out the disjunction between the woman and the mother, this study proposes an analysis of histery in the novel Memoirs of Two Young Wives (Honoré de Balzac, 1955) and of paranóia, from Émile (Rousseau, 1762) and also in Aimée´s case (Jacques Lacan, 1932). All in all, it stresses the division between the mother and the woman, articulating them to the slopes of desire and joy, totally related to female subjects.

A poesia desterritorializante de Néstor Perlongher: uma leitura de Hule / The deterritorializing poetry of Néstor Perlongher: a reading of Hule

Ferro, Gabriela Beatriz Moura 21 October 2010 (has links)
This research concentrates on the analysis of the relation between desire and language presented in the book of poems Hule (1989) by the Argentinean Néstor Perlongher. Based on the concept of deterritorialization, we aimed at observing such relations by the study of three themes in the work of this writer: territoriality, identity and desire. In particular, we studied the intercession of this subject and of some procedures of poetic experimentation from Neobarroque esthetics, used by the writer; among them, we mention the use of poems with hybrid vocabulary, in which we can find not only a mixture of archaic but also highly refined words from a vulgar lexicon, such as slang and varied jargon. The mixture of languages are also part of these procedure, there is the use of interlanguage which is created by the contact of speakers of Portuguese and Spanish, known as \"portunhol\".

Os meandros da paixão / The meanders of passion

Toledo, Renata Runavicius 15 December 2017 (has links)
Entretanto, podem estar, simplesmente, em busca de completude e de satisfação nem sempre presentes nos relacionamentos institucionalizados / Passion, extramarital relationships, and marriage are intertwined themes that have instigated men since ancient times. Passion presents as its main characteristic excessive experience and is difficult to be controlled by reason. It will be approached in this thesis the concept of love to clarify that the passionate love has a structure that differs from the other modalities of love. Passion insert the individual into a thundering experience and has as na elementary characteristic the activation of creativity and desire. The objective of this study is to verify by means of a comparative study between married and married people living an extramarital relationship if the latter present higher indexes in the manifestations of distress, affection expression, impulsivity, risk propensity and sensation search. 40 (forty) adults were followed between 25 (twenty-five) and 60 (sixty) years of age, married, of both sexes, 25 (twenty) of whom were living in an extramarital relationship, and 20 (twenty) not living na extramarital relationship. The following research tools were used: Passionate Love Scale, Adult Attachment Type Scale, Social-Pelotas Classification, Mental Health Inventory (MHI), Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Risk Propensity Scale Specific (Epre), Barrat Impulsivity Scale, Arnett Sensation Search Inventory. The results of the two groups (married in extramarital relationship and married without extramarital relationship) were compared statistically. The data were analyzed by the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test. The analysis of the results allowed to verify that: (1) married persons living in an extramarital relationship are not compromised in terms of psychopathology; (2) are in search of sensations; (3) there is no different pattern of attachment in the two groups analyzed; (4) people are aware that they violate social norms and reflect on it; (5) to live this transgressive relationship these people have the characteristic to take risks; (6) those married in extramarital affairs are seeking something more idealized and more enduring as affection. However, they compensate less with other things and are not impulsive. It is concluded that there are no differences in the experience of the passion between the groups with and without extramarital relationship in relation to their characteristics. The group of people with extramarital relationship did not present any psychic or functional impairment. Therefore, people living in extramarital relationships are not compromised in terms of psychopathology, are not impulsive and are not in search of sensations. However, they may simply be seeking completeness and satisfaction not always present in institutionalized relationships

No. of bitstreams: 1 Vilcelia Di Pietro.pdf: 402031 bytes, checksum: 3c0d8ecb42e0bad4f148078bbd8ba1d1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-26 / This dissertation problematizes the notion of Masochism, opening it up to other meanings beyond its pathological enclosure. We affirm that Sacher-Masoch, as an artist, uses eroticism and sensuality in order to positively transgress a reality that does not satisfy him, thus producing other realities. He uses the contract, law, and humor in order to depersonalize his characters through the composition and shaping of different forms of subjectivity. Sacher-Masoch creates procedures, both in his life and work, whose power dilutes established forms. In order to illustrate the unfolding of Masochism as a creative field, we use Deleuze s theoretical perspective, Sacher- Masoch s biography, and his literary production. Deleuze performs a re-reading of Freudian Masochism and inflects it: he reevaluates the psychological dynamic, brings new understanding to assemblages of desire, and problematizes the complexity of subjective configurations / Essa dissertação problematiza a noção de masoquismo, abrindo-o a outros sentidos para além de sua clausura patológica.

How do people construct comfort within their interior spaces? : a study of objects and circumstances between clothes and the building skin that influence comfort and the use of energy

Oji, Obioma Elizabeth January 2017 (has links)
This interdisciplinary PhD-by-practice examines how people construct comfort within their interior spaces through the study of objects, structures, membranes, situations and circumstances between clothes and the building skin. (In)tangible efficiencies of comfort and movement are problematised in this research. It provides new insights into the desire-lines of comfort, which are the habitual routines and interactions that individual’s practice to control their everyday energy use. The audience for this research includes academics, professionals, and those interested in how objects and circumstances influence physical, physiological and psychological interior comfort. The research methods that were applied included novel experimental interior design techniques of data gathering, demonstrated in the GYRO, AMNIOTIC SAC and COSY workshops. Co-researcher responses were generated in text, image and three-dimensional form. These immersive workshops examined specific interior sites, including: the conceptualisation of a product based structure that utilised gyroscopic principles; the prenatal spatial interior of the amniotic sac membranes were studied to posit how this space of origin influences our lifelong comfort desires. In addition, a range of lifecycle scenarios were created to facilitate the understanding of comfort through various objects and circumstances e.g. a cot, pram, loftbed, train, wheelchair, lounge, ambulance, and coffin. Analysis of the data evidenced representations and patterns of comfort desire-lines. Relationships with animate and inanimate objects were identified, connecting with differing dependent and autonomous comfort aspirations. The outcomes of this research can aid investigations into energy use, relocating efficiency discourses from the building skin to interior interstitial space.

The weight of love : locating and directing the soul in Augustine's early works

Clausen, Ian Arthur January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the weight of love in Augustine’s early works (AD 386-95). By the weight of love, this thesis refers to the location and direction of the soul qua lover. According to Augustine, every soul has a journey to attend to, and every journey comes replete with obstacles on the way. To negotiate these obstacles involves attending to the weight of love, taking care to place the soul in relation to the truth. To achieve this, Augustine embarks on three pivotal early works to develop an itinerary for spiritual awakening. In De Academicis (AD 386), he forges a path “from Cicero to Christ” in order to deliver the soul from scepticism, and to present it to the true philosophy. In De vera religione (AD 390-1), he paves a way “from aversion to transcendence” in order to overcome Manichean pride, and to embrace the humility of Christ. Finally in De libero arbitrio (AD 388-95), he charts a course “from faith to understanding” whereby the soul overcomes temptation to blame God for sin, and gains awareness of its location as a sinner in Adam. By examining each itinerary in chronological order, this thesis establishes the place of love as a driving mechanism in the early works, and thereby reveals a profound continuity in Augustine’s early approach to the soul as lover.
