Clustering Educational Digital Library Usage Data: Comparisons of Latent Class Analysis and K-Means Algorithms

Xu, Beijie 01 May 2011 (has links)
There are common pitfalls and neglected areas when using clustering approaches to solve educational problems. A clustering algorithm is often used without the choice being justified. Few comparisons between a selected algorithm and a competing algorithm are presented, and results are presented without validation. Lastly, few studies fully utilize data provided in an educational environment to evaluate their findings. In response to these problems, this thesis describes a rigorous study comparing two clustering algorithms in the context of an educational digital library service, called the Instructional Architect. First, a detailed description of the chosen clustering algorithm, namely, latent class analysis (LCA), is presented. Second, three kinds of preprocessed data are separately applied to both the selected algorithm and a competing algorithm, namely, K-means algorithm. Third, a series of comprehensive evaluations on four aspects of each clustering result, i.e., intra-cluster and inter-cluster distances, Davies-Bouldin index, users' demographic profile, and cluster evolution, are conducted to compare the clustering results of LCA and K-means algorithms. Evaluation results show that LCA outperforms K-means in producing consistent clustering results at different settings, finding compact clusters, and finding connections between users' teaching experience and their effectiveness in using the IA. The implication, contributions, and limitation of this research are discussed.

A user-centered usability and usefulness evaluation framework of digital libraries in the context of Ethiopia

Newayneh, Ketsela Gilats 03 1900 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 207-224 / Abstracts and keywords following the Appendices / This thesis evaluates Ethiopian higher learning institutes’ digital libraries (DLs) for their usability and usefulness. The outcome contributes knowledge by helping to propel development efforts; satisfy DL stakeholders; provide information and fill information gaps; serve as cross-reference for academicians and researchers in the discipline; make decisions and solve managerial issues in DLs of the developing world; and provide scientific interests and merits for the advancement of information systems. When undertaking usability and usefulness evaluation research in DLs, there is no agreed-upon established conceptual framework that guides researchers in the developing world. Therefore, the overall objective of this research is to propose a framework for DL evaluation that fits into the context of developing countries. As the study is concerned with users’ internal attributes, the interpretive research paradigm is applied. A qualitative research approach is employed and a case study research design is followed. Multiple data-collection techniques, namely semi-structured interviews (17 respondents), open-ended questionnaires (17 respondents) and observations (4 observations) are employed. The study encompasses four public university DLs in Ethiopia. The participants have a positive perception of all attributes of usability. Most of the attributes of usefulness are also perceived positively, except coverage. The major challenges encountered by participants are network accessibility, interruption and speed, and access restrictions imposed on some DL content. DL benefits include easy access to the DL content, enhanced teaching and research, lower cost and easy sharing of contents. The expectations of users are ensuring resource availability and sustainability, overcoming the absence of user feedback and federated search problems, and improving network infrastructure and speed. The interaction triptych framework (ITF), which is used in the current study, is a well-known framework that is commonly implemented by researchers. However, since it does not incorporate the contextual situation of developing countries, ITF has some limitations. Therefore, based on the output of this empirical research and considering the usability and usefulness themes of ITF and its relationships with other socio-technical and contextual themes, a contextual DL evaluation framework is proposed. The proposed framework emphasises the social, institutional and contextual aspects of DLs. The proposed framework has six DL components, namely: DL user; content and collection; system and technology; services and support; user interface; and context. The proposed framework is called a digital library components interaction evaluation framework. / Lo mqondo uhlaziya imitapo yolwazi yedijithali (i-DLs) yezikhungo zokufunda ephezulu zase-Ethiopia ngokusebenziseka kwazo nokuba wusizo. Umphumela unikela ngolwazi ngokusiza ukuhambisa imizamo yentuthuko; ukwanelisa ababambiqhaza be-DL; ukuhlinzeka ngolwazi nokugcwalisa izikhala zolwazi; ukusebenza okubhekiswe kukho kwezifundiswa nabaphenyi emkhakheni; yenza izinqumo futhi ixazulule izingqinamba zokuphatha kuma-DL wezwe elisathuthuka; futhi unikeze izintshisekelo zesayensi kanye nokufaneleka ekuthuthukisweni kwezinhlelo zolwazi. Izinselela ezinkulu ababambiqhaza abahlangabezana ngazo ukufinyeleleka kwenethiwekhi, ukuphazamiseka nejubane, nemikhawulo yokufinyelela ebekiwe kokunye okuqukethwe kwe-DL. Izinzuzo ze-DL zifaka ukufinyelela okulula kokuqukethwe kwe-DL, ukufundiswa okuthuthukisiwe nocwaningo, izindleko eziphansi nokwabelana okulula kokuqukethwe. Okulindelwe abasebenzisi ukuqinisekisa ukutholakala kwezinsiza nokusimama, ukunqoba ukungabi bikho kwempendulo yomsebenzisi nezinkinga zokusesha ezihlanganisiwe, nokwenza ngcono ingqalasizinda yenethiwekhi nejubane. Uhlaka lokusebenzisana lwe-triptych (ITF), olusetshenziswa ocwaningweni lwamanje, uhlaka olwaziwa kakhulu olusetshenziswa ngokuvamile ngabaphenyi. Kodwa-ke, njengoba lungafaki isimo somongo samazwe asathuthuka, i-ITF inemikhawulo ethile. / School of Computing / D. Phil. (Information Systems)

Critical Digital Transmission through the Transcription of J. A. Nensén’s Records : A Review of the Tools / Kritisk digital textöverföring vid transkriberingen av J. A. Nenséns uppteckningar : En verktygsanalys

Vigilanti, Jacqueline January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to understand transcription as a critical transmission practice in the digital medium in order to add to the research surrounding digital library initiatives that make these research materials available and accessible. The project to transcribe the records of Lapland priest J. A. Nensén at Umeå University aims to publish the transcriptions in the cultural heritage database Alvin by Uppsala University Library. Looking at these two Swedish projects can better illustrate the issues surrounding digital tool application and integration. This thesis first explores the transcription practices of a group of scholars transcribing J. A. Nensén’s records. By understanding their model, a better picture of transcription as a scholarly practice can be achieved that can be useful when selecting a digital transcription tool. The study then identified appropriate transcription tools and reviewed the ones most applicable for the project based on the group’s paradigm. It was discovered that the main disparity in transcription practice is the balance between producing a diplomatic transcription and one that is readable. The primary consideration in transcription tool selection was found to be the goals of the project; in this case, those of the transcribers. This determined the tools to be reviewed. These were: FromThePage, Scripto, T-Pen, and Wikisource. All the tools are suitable to the editors, but they still present some obstacles in regards to diplomatic transcription.

Identification of correlation between the characteristics of document images and its impact in visual fidelity in function of compression rate.

Tsujiguchi, Vitor Hitoshi 11 October 2011 (has links)
Document images are digitized documents with textual content. These documents are composed of characters and their layout, with common characteristics among them, such as the presence of borders and boundaries in the shape of each character. The relationship between the characteristics of document images and the impact of the compression process with respect to visual fidelity are analyzed herein. Objective metrics are employed to analyze the characteristics of document images, such as the Image Activity Measure (IAM) in the spatial domain, and assessment of Spectral Activity Measure (SAM) in the spectral domain. The performance of image compression techniques based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) are evaluated from document images by applying different compression levels for each technique to these images. The experiments are performed on digital images of printed documents and manuscripts of books and magazines, exploring texts written from the 16th to the 19th century. This material was collected in the Brasiliana Digital Library in Brazil. Experimental results show that the activity measures in spatial and spectral domains directly influence the visual fidelity of compressed images for both the techniques based on DCT and DWT. For a fixed compression ratio for both techniques on a compressed image, higher values of IAM and low levels of SAM in the reference image result in less visual fidelity after compression.

No. of bitstreams: 1 MARIA RAQUEL GOMES DA SILVA.pdf: 4744339 bytes, checksum: 9fb594ad01da186a0439981d15b9b154 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-06-26 / This research thesis focuses on the relationship between the elementary school reader and the digital library, so that relevant information relative to literary formation can be accessed and easily managed by the student. This investigation can be characterized as a dynamic approach to Systemic and Integral Action Research (PAIS: Pesquisa-Ação Integral e Sistêmica). This forms part of Anthropological Pedagogy that has as its object an educational process that involves the principles of Anthropology and Pedagogy. Consequently, we have a methodological proposal of research action of the educational act in the classroom assessed by the library. The interpretation of this data considers the signs, indications, and evidence of the CEPAE-UFG Elementary School, Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil (Centro de Ensino e Pesquisa Aplicada à Educação - Universidade Federal de Goiás-Brasil). It also takes into account the schools physical structure: classrooms, school library, computer rooms. The interpretation of the data of this experience was based on categorical analysis relative to the following concepts: reader, information literacy, and information literacy applied to literature. The latter were the reference and object of researchers investigation. Conceptual approaches relative to information literacy and information literacy applied to literature, reader, and the reading of literature were thus constructed. So as to define the concepts of reader and reading, the theoretical works of Wolfgang Iser and Antonio Cândido were pursued. On literacy, literary and informational, Magda Soares, Jack Goody & Ian Watt, John R. Bormuth, Graça Paulino, Egon de Oliveira Rangel, Bernadete Campello, Kelly Cristine G.D. Gasque and Carol C. Kuhlthau were relied on. The readers experience, successes and failures, through dialogue, amidst a theoretical approach and results that have been evidenced along a journey with the students of the sixth grade classes of CEPAE-UFG Elementary School has been discerned. This allowed us to identify the practice of literary and informational reading in the classroom and library environment.
