Sustaining digital products in the museum sector : balancing value and resources through good decisions

Digital products are an increasingly significant part of the output of museums in the UK, but the rationale behind them and the long term plans for them are not always clear. This thesis argues that to consider such a digital product to be sustainable, the value it creates must justify the resources it requires. The decisions involved in building and supporting these products affect both the value proposition and the resource requirements, but also reflect the way that museums and their stakeholders see the balance between the two. At the same time, this balance is under the influence of a constantly changing environment. The study proposes a model of sustainability as a cycle of value, resources and decision-making, and three case studies are used to examine how decisions are reached in the face of flux and uncertainty. Some ways in which decisions can be biased or distorted are identified, and finally some approaches are offered for museums seeking to improve the balance of value and resources, and increase the quality of the decisions that underlie them.

Reducing Food Waste with a Sustainable Lunch Concept : A Service Design Project

Environmental problems such as pollution and overconsumption is something that is mentioned often in the news as this thesis is written. Food waste is a problem that causes valuable resources to be lost, as on average one third of all food globally is being wasted. The food chain is complicated, from the farm to the table, and innovations in all parts of the chain could help reduce the waste. We have aimed our scope to the end of the chain, when food is made at a restaurants to be served to customers. Figures say that about 23% of food in the restaurant business in Sweden is being wasted. To try to solve this problem, we have turned to service design and the methodologies presented there, to find a potential solution that could help reduce food waste. An extensive service design process was made with many interviews with restaurants to find where a solution could be made. The whole design process is presented in the report, and the final concept resolves around a sustainable lunch dish that can be made out of ingredients that would otherwise be thrown out. The dish would be sold at lunch restaurants for a reduced price since it is cheap to make, and would make more people act sustainable. A concept test was made to evaluate the the sustainable dish concept with the help from the public. The main question was: Is this concept something that could be adopted by people who buy lunch on a regular basis in Sweden? The concept test resulted in 165 respondents that were asked what they would choose to eat from a given menu. 32% chose the sustainable dish, and although biases were believed to have played a role in the decision, the concept was deemed successful. A website was then designed, aimed towards restaurants that wanted to adopt the concept and to get started in an easy way.

The (un)Sustainable Business of Business : Hållbart Företagande

Businesses have historically had a negative impact on the environment by contributing to pollution, the increase of greenhouse emissions, neglection of responsible waste disposal, and deforestation among other things. Governments around the globe have been trying to align to goals and principles to decrease the negative impacts of humans, and it is now time for companies to step up and contribute to a more sustainable society. The research question for this study is “what can be the challenges when working with sustainability frameworks as an IT consultant firm?”. To answer this, research within Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), green ICT, and sustainable business have been conducted. In addition to this, the relation of two sustainability frameworks within IT consultant strategies have been assessed. Other than that, a case study have been carried out at an IT consultant firm. A result of this case study is a mapping of processes and their work with digital sustainability and sustainability frameworks. Two of the greatest challenges discussed in this study are about measuring and communicating the sustainability impact of projects. / Historiskt har företag haft en negativ påverkan på miljön genom att bland annat bidra till föroreningar, ökade växthusgasutsläpp, försummelse av ansvarsfull avfallshantering och avskogning. Regeringar runt om i världen har försökt att justera sina mål och principer för att minska människans negativa påverkan på klimatet, och det är nu hög tid för företag att börja bidra till ett mer hållbart samhälle. Forskningsfrågan för denna studie är “vilka utmaningar kan uppstå när en IT-konstulfirma arbetar med hållbarhetsramverk?. För att besvara denna fråga har forskning inom Informations- och kommunikationsteknik (IKT), grön IKT, hållbart företagande kombinerats och redovisats. Utöver detta har integrationen av två hållbarhetsramverk i en IT-konsultfirmas arbetsprocess undersökts. Studien har genomförts hos en IT-konsultfirma, och deras processer och arbete med digital hållbarhet och hållbarhetsramverk har kartlagts genom efterforskningar och intervjuer. De två största utmaningarna som diskuteras i denna studie är att mäta och kommunicera projekts hållbarhetseffekter.

Digital Sustainability: How does digital transformation in the tourism industry affect sustainable development? : A case study of the Innovation Voucher Project in Korea

This paper examines how the adoption of a series of digital technologies in tourism companies affects economic, social, and environmental sustainability. This research conducted a quantitative survey on tourism companies in Korea to empirically explore the connection between digital transformation and its impact on sustainability. The survey questionnaire was generated under the six hypotheses, which categorized research questions in detail. As a result of the survey data analysis, the following three implications were derived. First, it was confirmed that the economic sustainability of a company increases as the size of digital transformation grows. This result connotes substantial meaning because the existence of economies of scale helps economic sustainability, but on the other hand, it can undermine social sustainability. Second, a marginalization of environmental sustainability issues in digital transformation was observed. Survey results statistically confirmed that the impact of digital transformation on environmental sustainability is smaller than on economic and social sustainability. Finally, digital transformation has the characteristics of a service. There are provider companies that create digital transformation services, and at the same time, there are beneficiary companies that receive and utilize digital services. The fact that the impact of the innovation voucher service expected by the provider company was accepted as a smaller impact on the beneficiary company means that digital transformation services should also be designed to be more customer-centric.  Economic, social, and environmental sustainability do not exist alone. Improving economic sustainability triggered by digital transformation has side effects that deepen social inequality, and business activities focused on economic and social sustainability make the mistake of minimizing environmental sustainability in corporate management decisions. Digital transformation is a service that creates value in the process of utilization. Our society should balance the value generated by digital transformation with economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

Understanding Cryptocurrencies from a Sustainable Perspective : Investigating cryptocurrencies by developing and applying an integrated sustainability framework

With the invention of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin in 2009, the world's first blockchain application was developed. While academic research gradually begins to investigate cryptocurrencies more closely and attempt to understand their functioning, technology is rapidly evolving and ecosystems grow exponentially. The research is still scattered and chaotic and has not produced common guidelines. Therefore, the question remains: how sustainable cryptocurrencies and their digital ecosystems are.Only a few models and frameworks take a holistic view on digital sustainability. Only two frameworks were identified that take distributed ledger technologies (blockchain) or cryptocurrencies into consideration: the three governance strategies for digital sustainability of Linkov et al. (2018) and 10 basic conditions of sustainable digital artifacts according to Stuermer, Abu-Tayeh and Myrach (2016). These two frameworks were combined into a new integrated sustainability framework for cryptocurrencies. The developed integrated sustainability framework consists of four dimensions and 12 categories.Existing secondary data, self-conducted social media interviews and practical insights gained through an ASIC mining experiment were used to fill the framework with sufficient data. It confirms Bitcoin's sustainability problems in energy consumption and scalability, highlights Ethereum's great potential as a blockchain platform and explains the higher scalability and faster payment of Ripple and IOTA.While 2017 marked the temporary peak of the cryptocurrency hype, 2018 was a transformative year in which the leading cryptocurrencies were increasingly occupying more specialised niches.

Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur svenska aktörer inom besöksnäringen arbetar med hållbarhet och på vilket sätt de kommunicerar ut detta genom digitala kanaler. Forskningsfrågor:Hur arbetar svenska aktörer inom besöksnäringen med hållbarhet?Hur väljer svenska aktörer inom besöksnäringen att kommunicera sitt hållbarhetsarbete? Metod: Studien bygger på en kvalitativ forskningsmetod med abduktiv ansats. De kvalitativa metoder som har genomförts består av semistrukturerade intervjuer med tio respondenter från nio företag, och observationer av respektive företags digitala plattformar. Vidare har det insamlade materialet tematiskt analyserats. Resultat & slutsats: Studiens resultat påvisar att det finns en medvetenhet kring vikten av hållbarhetskommunikation bland samtliga respondenter. Alla tillfrågade företag väljer att arbeta med hållbarhet på olika sätt, men de flesta respondenter kopplade hållbarhet i första hand till det miljömässiga perspektivet. De sociala och ekonomiska perspektiven upplystes däremot även mer eller mindre av flera av respondenterna. Vidare väljer de tillfråga företagen att kommunicera sitt hållbarhetsarbete utåt till skillnad från att enbart kommunicera internt, som tidigare var normen. Dock uppfattas det som en utmaning för företagen att använda digitala kanaler för att kommunicera sitt hållbarhetsarbete och skapa en tydlig ansvarsuppfattning hos konsumenterna. / Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how Swedish actors in the hospitality industry work with sustainability and in what way they communicate this through digital channels. Research question:How do Swedish actors in the hospitality industry work with sustainability?How do Swedish actors in the hospitality industry choose to communicate their sustainability work? Methodology: The study is based on a qualitative research method with abductive approach. The qualitative methods that have been conducted consist of semi -structured interviews with ten respondents from nine companies, and observations of the respective companies' digital platforms. Furthermore, the collected material has been thematically analyzed. Analysis & Conclusion: The study's findings reveal that all respondents recognize the importance of sustainability communication. All of the companies questioned chose to work with sustainability in different ways, although the majority of respondents associated sustainability primarily with the environmental perspective. Several respondents, on the other hand, provided information on the social and economic perspectives of sustainability. Furthermore, the companies questioned choose to communicate their sustainability work outward as opposed to communicating internally, which was previously the norm. However, it is perceived as a challenge for companies to use digital channels to communicate their sustainability work and establish a clear view of responsibility for consumers.

Unleashing the Awareness of Sustainable Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Among Youth: : Bridging the Knowledge Gap and EmpoweringFuture Sustainable Designers

This research paper aims to explore the knowledge gap among young designers in relation to sustainable human-computer interaction (HCI), focusing on Interaction Design, and investigating the necessary resources for designing sustainable HCI. Lack of knowledge among young designers regarding sustainable practices in digital design contributes to the overconsumption of energy, and increased carbon emissions, highlighting the need to raise awareness and bridge the knowledge gap in Sustainable Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design among youth. Using qualitative methods, including 14 semi-structured interviews with informatics students in Jönköping, Sweden, the study identifies three main themes: Lack of Knowledge, Resource Needs, and Concerns About the Design Process. The findings highlight a limited understanding of sustainable HCI among young designers, emphasizing the significance of educational modules in sustainability within digital design. This study provides insights and recommendations for digital designers, educators, and policymakers to implement sustainable digital design practices in order to lessen environmental impact and promote sustainability within the digital world. The implications of this study include addressing the knowledge gap, fostering educational initiatives, and serving as a foundation for future research in sustainable digital design and HCI. This study addresses the challenge of motivating young designers to learn more about sustainable HCI while identifying essential resource requirements, education, design tools, eco-feedback technology, and support.

Background: Three mega trends are profoundly changing today’s market dynamics; climate change, digitalization, and globalization. The increasing interconnectivity and omnipresence of digital technologies are blurring the boundaries of the physical and virtual reality, implying a shift in how digital companies create value and internationalize. Also, new policies and higher customer demand in greener and smarter technologies have created new opportunities for value creation to develop cleaner technologies that foster the growth of clean-technology firms. To be competitive and persist in a sustainable and digital economy, firms must be able to cope with changing market conditions. Strategic agility can support to avoid rigidity and benefit from change, which is fostered by strong dynamic capabilities. Knowledge gaps: The study aims to address shortcomings of digital sustainability business models and specifically characterize the emerging sector of sustainable software companies offering Cleantech-as-a-Service applications. The international potential of these ventures recognizes the need to elaborate on internationalization drivers. The globally competitive environment enforces the need to be strategically agile, whereby applying agile principles to an international context can bring a comprehensive view of internationalizing digital sustainability ventures’ critical capabilities and business model characteristics. The study will also assert the role of collaborative ecosystems in an entrepreneurial internationalization. Purpose: This study will explore the emergence of Cleantech-as-a-Service and investigate how these digital entrepreneurs achieve strategic agility in global pivoting and competitive environments. Our exploratory research aims to apply agile principles to entrepreneurial internationalization strategies, where we through six in-depth interviews will discover the role of digital cleantech firms’ dynamic business models, capabilities, and ecosystems when entering a foreign market. Theoretical framework: The conceptual frame of references is based on two major sections where the first considers the context of digital and sustainable firms and exhibits the essences of digital and sustainable business model designs and how to sustain competitiveness through the interrelation of dynamic capabilities and strategic agility. In the second section the study brings forward theory supporting the exploration of an agile internationalization for digital firms, such as virtual markets and ecosystems. The key theoretical forthcomings are summarized into a conceptual framework that combines the role and interplay of entrepreneurs, business models, as well as networks and ecosystems on the basis of strategic agility and dynamic capabilities, that jointly foster an agile and virtual internationalization. Methodology: The interpretive research used an explorative and abductive approach to perform a qualitative multiple case design. The empirical study was based on six Cleantech-as-a-Service companies where in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with the informants of significant positions. The thematic and content data analysis supported the identification of common patterns and themes through coding which guided the subsequent analysis chapter. Findings: Our study revealed characteristics and success factors of Cleantech-as-a-Service ventures operating on global volatile markets, which adopt a leagile approach. The findings supported a definition of the concept but also identified the dynamic capabilities and flexible business models leveraged to sustain international competitive agility. The key agile capabilities relate to networking, experimenting, and learning whereas business model characteristics confer resiliency, interdependency, and efficiency.

Digital hållbarhet inom offentlig sektor : En fallstudie kring hur digital hållbarhet kan förstås och arbetas med inom offentlig sektor.

Digital sustainability is a concept that is increasingly used in today's society. There is still some uncertainty about how Swedish public sector should think and relate to the concept and what the meaning really is. The purpose of this study is to investigate how public enterprises can gain a better understanding of digital sustainability and thus create better conditions in their work towards working digitally sustainably. To answer this, a qualitative case study was conducted at the Swedish authority Bolagsverket. The case study was divided into two phases, where the first phase consisted of an analysis of the current situation in order to gain an understanding of how the authority relates to digital sustainability today. This followed the second phase where a focus group interview, observation and document analysis was conducted in order to analyze and together with the theory draw conclusions related to how the business can improve its current way of working regarding digital sustainability. The conclussion clarifies five aspects to describe how a public sector can continue its work and understanding of digital sustainability. For future research as a supplement to this study, it is recommended to investigate more than one public sector in order to create a general picture of digital sustainability in public sector in Sweden. / Digital hållbarhet är ett begrepp som används allt mer i dagens samhälle. Än finns dock en viss osäkerhet kring hur svenska offentliga verksamheter ska tänka och förhålla sig till begreppet och vad dess innebörd verkligen är. I denna studie är syftet att undersöka hur offentliga verksamheter kan få en bättre förståelse för digital hållbarhet och på så sätt skapa bättre förutsättningar i sitt arbete mot att arbeta digitalt hållbart. För att besvara detta genomfördes en kvalitativ fallstudie hos den svenska myndigheten Bolagsverket. Fallstudien delades i två faser där den första fasen bestod av en nulägesanalys för att få en förståelse för hur verksamheten förhåller sig till digital hållbarhet idag. Detta följt av den andra fasen där en fokusgruppintervju, observation och dokumentanalys genomfördes i syfte att analysera och tillsammans med teorin dra slutsatser relaterade till hur verksamheten kan förbättra sitt nuvarande arbetssätt gällande digital hållbarhet. Av slutsatsen tydliggörs fem aspekter för att beskriva hur en offentlig verksamhet kan fortsätta sitt arbete och förståelse kring digital hållbarhet. Inför framtida forskning som en påbyggnad på denna studie rekommenderas att undersöka mer än en offentlig verksamhet för att skapa en större generell bild av digital hållbarhet inom offentliga verksamheter i Sverige.

Digitalt ansvarstagande som stöd till en hållbar arbetsmiljö / Digital responsibility in support of a sustainable work environment

Den fysiska arbetsmiljön är ett känt fenomen där arbetet kring förbättring har pågått under en längre tid. Den digitala arbetsmiljön är dock något nyare som blir allt mer påtaglig med den digitala utvecklingen. Vilka begrepp som bygger upp fenomenet digital arbetsmiljö samt deras funktion och påverkan är något som denna studie kommer undersöka för att bidra till hållbarhet på arbetsplatsen. Studien kommer undersöka vad företag gör för att bidra till en hållbar digital arbetsmiljö samt hur arbetsmiljön kan förbättras genom digitalt ansvarstagande. Undersökningens resultat baseras på studerande av befintliga teorier om ämnena: digital arbetsmiljö, digital integritet, digital funktionalitet och digital hållbarhet samt kvalitativa intervjuer. Intervjuerna ger dels information ur ledningens perspektiv samt medarbetarnas på operativ nivå. De två respondenterna inom ledningen arbetar som digitaliseringsansvariga på ett privatägt IT-företag respektive i en större kommun i Sverige, medans de två respondenterna som representerar den operativa nivån arbetar som IT konsult respektive Digital modellerare. Efter undersökning framkommer ett tydligt större intresse och fokus på den digitala arbetsmiljön. Teknikens möjligheter har i många år styrt utvecklingen som lett till att användarna fått anpassa sig efter tekniken. Allt större fokus har nu skiftat till att se tekniken som ett hjälpmedel som ska stötta och anpassa sig till verksamheten och medarbetarnas behov. Studiens resultat beskriver ett flertal olika saker som de studerade verksamheterna gör för att bidra till en bättre arbetsmiljö, men vi ser att det även finns många utmaningar i den digitala utvecklingen. Med hjälp av det digitala ansvaret har vi listat ett antal punkter som verksamheter bör sträva efter för att kunna uppnå en bättre hållbar digital arbetsmiljö. Några av slutsatserna som kan nyttjas av verksamheter för att bidra till bättre digital arbetsmiljö är att skydda medarbetarnas integritet, utbilda i ny teknik och informationshantering samt stötta och underlätta arbetet när tekniska problem inträffar. / The physical work environment is a well known phenomenon where the work of improvement has been going on for a long time. The digital work environment on the other hand is a newer concept and is more recognicable due to the digital development. The concepts that make up the phenomenon of the digital work environment and their function and impact is something that this study will examine to contribute to a sustainable workplace. The study will examine what companies do to contribute to a sustainable digital work environment as well as how the work environment can be improved through digital responsibility. The result of the study is based on earlier research and theories about digital work environment, digital integrity, digital functionality, digital sustainability, and also qualitative interviews. The interviews provide information from a management perspective as well as from an operational level. The two interviewees on a managerial level are both digital managers, one for a privately owned IT business and the other one in a large county in Sweden. The two respondents who represent the operational level are working as an IT consultant and a digital modelar respectively. After research, a clear greater interest and focus emerges on the digital work environment. The technique itself has for many years been controlling the development which has led to the users having to adapt to the technique, instead of an interplay. The focus has now shifted to treat the technique as an aid to support and adapt to the organisation, its users and their needs. The results of the study describe several things that the studied companies are actively doing to contribute to a better work environment, but there are also challenges along with the digital development. With digital responsibility as a standing point, we came up with a list of points which companies should strive for in order to achieve a sustainable digital work environment. Some of our conclusions for businesses to use to contribute to a better digital work environment are to protect the integrity of employees, educate in new technology and information management as well as to support and facilitate work when technical problems occur.
