Morissette, Jessica 04 1900 (has links)
Feu is an autofictional photo-text collection in which I revisited memories from a past relationship after a fire destroyed everything. Among a serie of short episodes, I tried to transmit the different emotions felt while mourning and to show my obsession for both the fire and my ex companion. I kept turning over souvenirs in a self-centered way until it lead to a deep emotional uneasiness. It started resorbing the moment an opening to others was made, but never ended. Pictures are used to illustrate the words as well as to participate in the exposure of loneliness. In addition to a few sub-headings relating my project to Sophie Calle’s work, I tempted to recuperate some of her characteristic traits. Sophie Calle: Soi en négatif is an essay about the self-performance. It involves an autobiographic contract between the performer and the public, a network of intertextuality and in this case, specific concepts like otherness, mourning and absence. I tried to show how she managed to expose herself by the negative. Not only does she take advantage of the most painful negative moments of her life and the ones of others, but she also reveals herself only through documents or others. In a way, her words and her photos develop her life contained into her personal archives. When she exposes herself, art blows way beyond literature, cinema, interviews and photography to because a self-performance, in negative.

Belonging-in-difference : negotiating identity in Anglophone Caribbean literature

Faulkner, Marie-France January 2013 (has links)
Through the critical discourse analysis of Anglophone Caribbean literature as a polyrhythmic performance, this research sets out to examine the claim that, in a world in a state of constant flux, emerging Caribbean voices are offering a challenging perspective on how to negotiate identity away from the binary constructs of centre and margin. It argues that the Caribbean writer, as a self-conscious producer of alternative discourses, offers an innovative and transcultural vision of the self. This research consists of three stages which integrate critical discourse and literary analysis with colonial/postcolonial and socio-cultural theories. Firstly, it investigates the power of language as an operation of discourse through which to apprehend reality within a binary system of representation. It then examines how the concept of discourse, as a site of contestation and meaning, enables the elaboration of a Caribbean counter-discourse. Finally, it explores the role, within the Caribbean text, of literary techniques such as narrative fragmentation, irony, dialogism, intertextuality, ambivalence and the carnivalesque to challenge, disrupt the established order and offer new perspectives of being. My study of Anglophone Caribbean texts highlights the power of language and the authority of the ‘book’ as subtle, insidious tools of domination and colonisation. It also demonstrates how, by allowing hitherto marginalised voices to write themselves into being, Caribbean writers enable linear narratives and monolithic visions of reality to be contested and other perspectives of understanding and of meaning to be uncovered. It exposes the plurality and the interweaving of discourses in the Caribbean text as a liberating, dynamic force which enables new subject positions and realities to emerge along the lines of similarity and difference. At a time when the issue of identity is one of the central problems in the world today, the research argues that this celebration of the plural, the fluid and the ambivalent offers new ways of being away from the stultifying perspective of essentialist forms.

Leal, Eduardo Martinelli January 2017 (has links)
The disappearance of people is a complex and polysemic phenomenon that can be connected to different historical conditions, knowledge, technologies and expertise. Through a multisituated ethnography, we propose to understand the power relations invested in the forms of government (Foucault, 2008) of disappearance, through the emergence of family militancy, modes of subjectification of experience, cases of disappearance, truth regimes and of the mediators' expertises. To do so, we use participant observation on events on the topic, semi-structured interviews with family and mediators, and bibliographical and documentary research. The militancy of relatives of disappeared persons emerged from the mobilization against violence in Rio de Janeiro in the 1990s, but was transformed by the image of maternal suffering in the public space. The family is fundamental in building social milestones from which disappearance is experienced as a social experience that involves time, suffering, gender and class relations and the search for truth. Although militancy and the work of state institutions are fundamental to the establishment of governance relations of disappearance, other human and nonhuman actors are potentially apt to engage and define new meanings, tactics or problematizations. The expertise constitutes as a technology of government for the mediators and officials of the State, producing the disappeared by means of associations with relatives, techniques and knowledge.
