A POMBA-DE-BANDO (ZENAIDA AURICULATA - AVES, COLUMBIDAE) NAS PAISAGENS AGRÍCOLAS DO SUDOESTE DO BRASIL: DISTRIBUIÇÃO, ABUNDÂNCIA E INTERAÇÕES COM A AGRICULTURA / Eared dove (Zenaida auriculata - Aves, Columbidae) in agricultural landscape in southwestern of Brazil: Distribution, abundance and interactions with agricultureSilva, Giliandro Gonçalves 26 February 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Agriculture expansion and intensification reassemble bird communities, including the loss of
species, reduced diversity and the population increase of some species able to use the novel
resources available. In some circumstances these species may be perceived as overabundant
and conflict with human activities. This dissertation examines 1) the influence of the land use
in agricultural landscapes in the abundance of eared dove and 2) the recognition of eared
dove's populations as overabundant in the Southwestern of Brazil. The study was conducted
in grain-producing regions comprising the part of the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa
Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo. We counted birds along 50 routes, each comprising 12
counting stations, placed on secondary roads and relate occurrence and abundance with land
uses. We applied questionnaires to farmers record their perception about damages by eared
doves in agriculture. Our data demonstrated that the eared dove was the most abundant
species, representing 48% of total individuals counted and also one of the most common,
being found in 93% of samples. At the landscape scale, the abundance of eared doves was
associated positively with routes crossing landscapes dominated by plantations in winter and
negatively associated with routes with large tracts of forests and mixed farming in summer. At
the local scale the abundance of doves in winter was greater in routes with higher frequency
of maize plantations and in summer in routes with higher frequency of sugar cane and
soybean plantations. Thus, the type of land use influenced the abundance of doves. Of the
farmers interviewed, 41% claimed some kind of damage to their crops. Among these, 70%
reported damages of less than 10% of the planted area. The highest percentage of positive
responses about damages occurred in Paraná, with 54% of complaints. Sixty seven percent of
the reported damages were located up to 100 km from nesting colonies. The probability of
reporting damages decreases 1% every 10 km away from a colony. We consider that eared
doves can be classified as overabundant in parts of the States of Paraná and São Paulo, where
the agricultural landscape favor high abundance of this species all over the year and risk of
conflicts with agriculture is higher.
A pomba-de-bando
agropecuária e remanescente florestais no verão.

Empowering Strategies at Home in the Works of Nikki Giovanni and Rita DoveProitsaki, Maria January 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the presence of Black women characters in domestic contexts in the early poetry of African American poets Nikki Giovanni and Rita Dove and examines the strategies these women employ, individually and in close relationships, in order to empower themselves and sustain those around them. It provides a joint exploration of the work of two major contemporary poets from a literary and interdisciplinary perspective, mapping instances of the poetic expression of Black feminist politics. The theoretical approach builds on a range of understandings of empowerment, strategy, and the central importance of home in an African American context, as conceptualized primarily in the work of Black feminists, in particular Patricia Hill Collins and bell hooks. Structurally, the study follows the cycle of a woman’s life from girlhood to old age. Thus, poems involving the empowerment strategies of girls at home are explored first. They are followed by poems where the domestic lives of adult women and then elderly women are addressed, with a focus on their respective empowering strategies. Discussed last are strategies of empowerment evident in the interactions of (largely) Black women of different generations in poems depicting intergenerational contacts and relationships. Homeplaces created by Black women have historically been experienced as sheltering African Americans from the perils of the dominant white society and thereby Black women’s domestic experiences have generally been linked to privilege rather than to confinement and victimization. In the poems, when at home, Black women utilize different strategies to assert themselves and each other, implicitly or explicitly, emerging strong and resilient, even though sometimes they may merely derive satisfaction from their poor circumstances. Strong connections to the past and a sense of belonging, partaking in legacies and storytelling, as well as memory, imagination, dreaming and hiding, are recurring elements of their empowerment processes. However, their enjoyment of loving bonds and their sharing of African-derived knowledges and ways of being emerge as the most significant aspects contributing to their empowerment.

Speaking Out: How Women Create Meaning from the Dove Campaign for Real BeautyInfanger, Valori 16 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty could be used to effectively expand the media-narrowed definition of beauty. This study focused on the Onslaught video and corresponding message board. The sample included 119 posts written by 85 different message board users. Both a descriptive and interpretive content analysis based on reception analysis was used to deconstruct the message posters' interpretation and construction of individual beauty. The posters used the board primarily to express themselves, attach blame to the media and arrive at consensus. Overall, the users responded positively to the campaign. Twenty themes emerged from the posts, with the most prevalent attaching blame to the media for societal problems. The findings of this study suggest that Dove effectively created an online community where women could find a voice to express themselves and share experiences. More importantly, Dove initiated a public discussion that is a preliminary step in changing social norms. As such, the campaign should be viewed as having been effective.

Analýza obchodu s vybranými druhy z řádů Coraciiformes, Musophagiformes, Columbiformes a Piciformes / Analysis of Trade with selected species of Coraciiformes, Musophagiformes, Columbiformes and PiciformesZÁHOROVÁ, Lucie January 2018 (has links)
International trade in fauna and flora is curently considered as one of the greatest threats to populations of many wildlife species. According to available information, some species are declining mainly due to persecution by people for meat or for trade. Illegal trade is increasing as well. Its yearly turnover is estimated to be in the order of billions of US dollars. This diploma theses analyzes the international trade with selected bird species under the CITES Convention - Asian hornbills, African turacos, South American tukans and arassari, and pigeons and doves during the period from 1990 till 2015. Although the CITES Convention has proven to contribute to protecting biodiversity and protecting endangered species by monitoring and regulating the trade with them, it has its limitations and shortcomings. These are described in this diploma thesis on the example of some specific cases.

Extended performance techniques and compositional style in the solo concert vibraphone music of Christopher Deane.Smith, Joshua D. 08 1900 (has links)
Vibraphone performance continues to be an expanding field of music. Earliest accounts of the presence of the vibraphone and vibraphone players can be found in American Vaudeville from the early 1900s; then found shortly thereafter in jazz bands as early as the 1930s, and on the classical concert stage beginning in 1949. Three Pieces for Vibraphone, Opus 27, composed by James Beale in 1959, is the first solo concert piece written exclusively for the instrument. Since 1959, there have been over 690 pieces written for solo concert vibraphone, which stands as evidence of the popularity of both the instrument and the genre of solo concert literature. Christopher Deane has contributed to solo vibraphone repertoire with works that are regarded as staples in the genre. Deane's compositions for vibraphone consistently expand the technical and musical potential of the instrument. Performance of Deane's vibraphone works requires a performer to utilize grips and specific performance techniques that are departures from standard performance practices. Many of the performance techniques needed to successfully execute these pieces are not routinely found in either percussion pedagogy courses or performance ensemble situations. As a result, most percussionists are not familiar with these techniques and will require additional assistance, instruction, or demonstrations. The impetus of this document is to present explanations and solutions for performance areas that require extended performance techniques, to offer recommendations on the creation, choosing, and manipulating of special implements, and to propose varied choices related to artistic interpretation of three of Deane's vibraphone pieces: Mourning Dove Sonnet (1983), The Apocryphal Still Life (1996), and Dis Qui Etude (2004).

En fredsduva. Eller? : En semiotisk visuell analys av ukrainska krigstidsaffischer. / A Dove of Peace. Or Is It? : A Semiotic Visual Analysis of Ukrainian War-Time Posters.Mykhailetska, Nataliia January 2023 (has links)
This thesis has investigated the dove of peace as a symbol in Ukrainian war posters and what affect its depiction have for the final result. The aim of the thesis was to create a deeper understanding of how traditional symbols, in this case the dove of peace, can be used to create an opinion for a specific purpose. The study was performed through a qualitative method in the shape of a semiotic visual analysis where the material was analyzed by using denotation and connotation and finally put in relation to the theoretical framework. Applied theory includes representation, semiotics, and propaganda. The result shows that the dove of peace takes on different roles depending on the context it is depicted in, but all posters have one thing in common and that is that it takes a clear stand for Ukraine’s cause, and it becomes symbol to create sympathy in the western world. As part of my degree project, I have also done a media production. The objective of this was to redo the illustrations for Unicef Ukraine and Dzerelo's existing brochure "Children with Acquired Disabilities. Guidelines for Parents and Professionals" with more positive and inclusive portrayal of children with disabilities, as well as to inspire and create a feeling of hope among the target group through the illustrations.

Moaning like a dove : Isaiah's dove texts as the background to the dove in Mark 1:10Chamberlain, Peter January 2016 (has links)
There is no consensus regarding the interpretation of the "Spirit like a dove" comparison in Jesus' baptism (Mk 1:10). Although scholars have proposed at least fifty different interpretations of the dove comparison, no study appears to have considered Isaiah's three dove texts as the background for the Markan dove (cf. Is 38:14; 59:11; 60:8). This neglect is surprising considering the abundance of Isaianic allusions in Mark's Prologue (Mk 1:1-15), and the growing awareness that Isaiah is the hermeneutical key for both the Markan Prologue and Jesus' baptism within it. Indeed, Mark connects the dove image inseparably to the Spirit's "descent" from heaven, which alludes to Yahweh's descent in a New Exodus deliverance in Isaiah 63:19 [MT]. Furthermore, each Isaianic dove text uses the same simile, "like a dove" or "like doves," which appears in Mark 1:10, and shares the theme of lament and restoration which fits the context of Mark's baptism account. This study therefore argues that the dove image in Mark 1:10 is a symbol which evokes metonymically Isaiah's three dove texts. So the Spirit is "like a dove" not because any quality of the Spirit resembles that of a dove, but because the dove recalls the Isaianic theme of lament and restoration associated with doves in this Scriptural tradition. After discussing the Markan dove in terms of simile, symbol, and metonymy, the study examines the Isaianic dove texts in the MT and LXX and argues that they form a single motif. Next, later Jewish references to the Isaianic dove texts are considered, while an Appendix examines further dove references in Jewish and Greco-Roman literature. Finally, the study argues that the Markan dove coheres in function with the Isaianic dove motif and symbolizes the Spirit's effect upon and through Jesus by evoking metonymically the Isaianic dove texts.
