Cappelin, Erik January 2024 (has links)
In this project I investigate the impact of musical influences on listeners, particularly in performance and composition. The study is motivated by a personal quest to understand how musical inspirations shape proficiency on an instrument and compositional abilities. Five pieces with varied grooves, tempos, and harmonics were composed and performed on March 19, 2024, at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm to examine these influences. Audience feedback indicated recognizable connections to music from the 1950s and 1960s. Post-concert analysis revealed insights into the direct and indirect influences on the compositions, detailing the thought processes behind each piece. The discussion offers a comprehensive summary, linking the work to instrumental techniques and highlighting the development of skills in composition and leadership. This project has broadened my perception of composition, demonstrating increased versatility and providing new methods for future musical endeavors. /
Dark Keys - Erik Cappelin

Clownen Pucko - Erik Cappelin

Leach - Erik Cappelin

Song for Ture Björkman - Erik Cappelin

The Equalizer - Erik Cappelin

Medverkande musiker:

Eskil Larsson - Tenorsaxofon

Hampus Adami - Ventilbasun

Mattias Lindberg - Piano

Hugo Löf - Kontrabas

Erik Cappelin - Trummor

Selected works for solo frame drums by B. Michael Williams.

Nicholson, Jason Eugene 08 1900 (has links)
In 1993, American percussionist and composer B. Michael Williams published Four Solos for Frame Drums. This collection is considered the first work written exclusively for solo frame drum in Western notation. Williams primarily modeled his solos around traditional rhythms and techniques from Middle Eastern musical traditions as well as Glen Velez's virtuosic style of playing frame drums. He also drew influence from the music of South India and Sub-Saharan Africa. Williams intentionally combines the aforementioned elements as a means to expose his students and audience members to the music and drumming of these regions. The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of select compositions for solo frame drum by B. Michael Williams in order to assist future performers in making well-informed interpretive decisions. The analysis will highlight the compositional style, structural components, technical demands and important performance considerations of four pieces by Williams: Quatrinity, Etude in Arabic Rhythms, Another New Riq and Rhythmic Journey no. 1: (From Conakry to Harare).

No caminho de Georg Büchner: a recepção da obra de Georg Büchner nos dramas Tambores na Noite e Baal, de Bertolt Brecht / In the way of Georg Büchner: the reception of the Georg Büchner work\'s in Drums in the Night and Baal drama of Bertolt Brecht

Schwarz, Bernhard Johannes 29 September 2008 (has links)
This work analyzes the reception of Georg Büchner (1813-1837) by Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), focusing Brechts initial creative phase. In particular, the reception of the drama Woyzeck in Drums in the Night and of the novel Lenz, from Büchner, in Baal, from Brecht, is analyzed. Both works of Büchner, as is also the case for the majority of his remaining texts, were published posthumously: Lenz, in 1837, and Woyzeck, in 1878; the drama had its premiere only in November 1913. His works, close to unknown at his time, obtained some resonance in realism and in naturalism but the peak of the reception of his works occurred only in the beginning of the XXth century, with modernism and the expressionists. The present analysis investigates the impact of Woyzeck and Lenz and the specific form of Brechts reception of Büchner. Both these authors are important since they reflect critical positions within the political and ideological scenarios of their times, in Germany. Brecht used both works from Büchner as inspiration to put in evidence the position of the individual in a time of decadence, which, moreover was characterized by an authoritarian and repressive politics in Germany, as well as the lack of individual freedom. This analysis is based in the literary hermeneutics of Hans Gadamer, and the premises of the reader-response criticism of Hans Robert Jauss. The dramas Drums in the Night and Baal are examined taking into account the intertextuality with the drama Woyzeck and narrative Lenz of Büchner, with the help of reflections elaborated by Broich and Pfister, a method which allows to clarify the historic and textual relations of literary works. In this thesis we attempt to establish a direct intertextual relation between the dramas Woyzeck and Drums in the Night and also of Lenz and Baal, which had not been previously identified in literary research up to now.

Trummor i studiomiljö : Om trumsound och hur de går att påverka vid inspelning / Drums in a studio environment : About drum sounds and how to affect them in a recording studio

Lindh, Jonatan January 2018 (has links)
This study deals with the topic of drum sound in a studio environment and how I, as a drummer, can affect the sound. The purpose of the study is to understand and develop the various factors that together create a sound. The study involves technical areas such as timing and dynamics, material areas such as the choice of instruments and their design as well as the impact of microphone placement and the acoustics in a room. After transcribing and analyzing the drumming of six famous songs, I recorded myself in a studio and by way of previous experiences and new ideas I tried to recreate the drumming and the drum sound of these songs as far as possible. Attached to this study there are transcripts of the drums and two versions on each take where one is without effects and the other is with effects. The process in the studio was documented in the form of notes and a video camera which then became the basis for my analysis together with the recorded material. The result shows that accurate preparation and good knowledge of the instrument is a fundamental condition for a good sound. Choosing instruments with appropriate sound characteristics and taking time to tune and mic the drums makes the mixing phase shorter and easier. Because the perception of timing and dynamics is personal, the conditions for developing a unique sound are also created through the musician's way of interpreting and playing the music. /

Ferntoft, Gabriel January 2023 (has links)
This qualitative study aims to explore drum teachers' didactical perspectives on teaching high school drum students about the timbral sound world of drums. The study includes semi-structured interviews with four drum teachers to provide insights into their perceived experiences of the subject. The findings of the study suggest that drum teachers often work with the timbral sound world of drums in relation to primarily ensemble teaching, by working with the sound world based on a specific song or genre. Findings also show that according to drum teachers teaching about timbre can be challenging due to the students' general knowledge level being so low that other more basic skills behind the drums, such as technique and dynamic control, must be addressed first. Other challenges include a lack of resources and time constraints. The study emphasizes, in accordance with prior research, that working with the timbral sound world of drums is a central part of developing an artistic expression behind the drums, that this work should be approached from multiple perspectives and focuses if the goal is to create as broad a knowledge base as possible and that workshops can be both a developing and time-efficient way to work with the timbral sound world of drums.
