E-mail Prioritization through Social Network Analysis / E-mail Prioritization through Social Network Analysis

Rezaee, Shaliz January 2012 (has links)
Context. Trust and reliability are important issues in online communication. By rapid growth of online social networks (OSNs), online communication becomes richer by the integrating of social interaction into the communication model. However, E-mail communication systems concern about unsolicited messages. Objectives. In this thesis the aim is to investigate how to prioritize E-mails between recipients and senders by using information from OSNs. Methods. An algorithm is presented for computing trust by measuring users‟ interaction and similarity in online social networks and this trust is used by another algorithm for prioritizing the E-mail inbox. Results. An evaluation of the proposed method is performed via a case study and the prediction error of the method is compared with the prediction error of the random feedback. The error of the method is significantly lower than random feedback and is relatively low, given the small number of observations. Conclusions. This thesis contributes in its review and categorization of existing trust models. Furthermore, it provides an analysis on how to use social information for E-mail prioritization. Based on the analysis, a method is presented for improving the reliability of E-mail communication by extracting information from OSNs. The information is used for computing the trust score between two OSN friends. In this thesis, it is suggested that, inbox prioritization is achievable using the selected method. / This thesis has addressed E-mail prioritization through social network by using social information. The task has been done by focusing on the interaction and similarity between friends in the OSN. A theoretical analysis has been performed in order to identify the characteristic of suitable trust model. An algorithm (Algorithm 1) has been suggested to estimate weights of different criteria of social information. In order to have the trust predictions based on the user‟s preferences, the algorithm adjusted the weights based on the user‟s feedback. In addition, another algorithm (Algorithm 2) has been proposed to compute trust scores and prioritize E-mails inbox. Finally, an algorithm (Algorithm 3) has been presented to evaluate the error of the computed (predicted) trust scores. In order to display the applicability of the method as well as to motivate the theoretical foundation, a case study was reported in which the proposed method was applied to Facebook. The analysis showed that the proposed method was feasible to be used, and it provided users a mean to prioritize E-mail inboxes based on the social information extracted from Facebook. The analysis indicated that least squares method was a suitable approach to estimate weights that were used in computing trust scores and thus prioritizing E-mails inbox.

Nyhetsbrev för e-handeln : Vad man bör veta när man designar nyhetsbrev för modebranschen

Nilsson, Jessica January 2010 (has links)
This thesis gives the reader an understanding for newsletters within e-commerce, and how to work with them as a channel for marketing. Furthermore it explains the technical and graphical demands, and how to ensure that the newsletter reaches the intended receivers. A successful newsletter can entice people to shop, but can also help to strengthen a brand and the relationship between the customer and the company. During the writing of the thesis, it has emerged that the most important part of a newsletter (which also determine whether or not the receiver reads the letter) are the subject heading, sender, layout, headlines, images and the deregistration link. A part from working with the different parts of the letter, the sender should also be aware of the technical and graphical demands. Since the E-mail clients are looking out forimages, fonts that are not embedded in the computer, and for questionable words there’s a big risk for ending up in a spam filter when not considering the demands. To ensure that the letter reaches the receivers it is common to test it against spam filter, look at it in the different E-mail clients, use A/B split test and finally test what time and day that fits the receivers the best. One of the strongest arguments to use E-mail communication is because it is an extremely measurable medium. With help from special programmes one can easily find out which E-mails bounced, why they bounced, how many opened the E-mail, which links they clicked, who deregistered and who forwarded it. The answers to these questions are all valuable information since it gives an understanding for the customers and gives the sender a chance to improve the letters.

A systemic analysis of postgraduate students' experiences of computer mediated communication in a Web-based learning environment

Vandeyar, Kaminthia 06 September 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to describe and offer a description of postgraduate students' experiences of computer-mediated communication in an interactive web-based learning environment. This is relevant to the South African context regarding its appropriateness and feasibility as a distance-learning medium. In this research study the collaboration of offline and online learning as a dual medium is briefly looked at. Concepts involved in web interactions, such as computer-mediated communication, are reviewed and some of these experiences are described. A systems qualitative analysis was employed in the research design, and consequently a systemic lens was utilised as the theoretical perspective. This lens allowed for a revealing of interactional and communication patterns involved in web-based learning environments. The findings in this research study are discussed and some recommendations for web learners and course presenters are briefly highlighted. / Dissertation (MA (Research Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Psychology / unrestricted

This research aims to examine career counselling by e-mail. E-mail from a specific case has been examined. The research contained two parts; the aim of the first one was to consider the character of the incoming e-mail. The main focus of this research has been on the second part, where eight incoming and eight outgoing e-mails have been interpreted with a focus on communication skills. Our research is abductive, using qualitative data analysis. Amongst our conclusions are that the examined e-mail are mainly of information character and a smaller part of counselling character. The communication skills used in traditional career counselling are used even in this context, where the main part is found in the e-mail of counselling character.

A contextualized instructional design approach : integrating intercultural competence development into email computer training

Svensson, Susan Lynn 01 January 2012 (has links)
Email communication within a diverse workplace poses intercultural communication challenges (Martin & Nakayama, 2007). This study aims to make a contribution to the literature by examining how these challenges can be addressed through email computer training. For this study, I set out to understand and demonstrate how, within the instructional design process, contextualized curriculum can be created that integrates intercultural competency and email proficiency. This thesis includes a draft of an instructional plan and course outline for an email computer class that focuses on developing intercultural awareness and skills in the context of an email training course. First, I examined email computer curricula, specifically the topics, course goals, and course objectives common to the curricula. As a result of this examination, I discovered that email training is limited to the technical aspects of email communication. Additionally, I surveyed intercultural communication professionals about intercultural topics applicable to email communication. Their survey responses indicated cultural differences account for some, but not all email workplace challenges. For example, they believed it is important to address intercultural elements like low vs. high context when writing an email message, and power distance and levels of formality when writing greetings and closings. Additionally, their feedback indicated that it is important to address direct vs. indirect communication styles when writing the main point and linear vs. circular cognitive styles when organizing text within an email. I incorporated their perspectives in my course outline. Finally, experts from the fields of instructional design, intercultural communication, and computer training reviewed a draft of the plan and outline. Although their feedback indicated that the premise and approach were sound and achievable, they differed in their evaluation of specific elements of the course. In general, their perspectives reflected their professional focus. For example, they either recommended a stronger focus on the technical aspects or a stronger focus on the intercultural aspects of the course design. Detailed comments pertained to the fine-tuning of the objectives, timing of the individual lessons, and other instructional elements needed for any polished professional course outline
