MEN'S MAGAZINES AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF MASCULINITY IN TAIWAN

JIANG, CHINGSHAN 01 May 2012 (has links)
In the context of globalization, commercialization, and the increasing presence of Western and Japanese male images in Chinese society, this study is an attempt to examine how local and global force interact and how masculinities are constructed in men's magazines in Taiwan. Methodologically, this study sees in-depth interviews, content analysis, and semiotic analysis as complementary methods in the study of construction of masculinity in Taiwan. Results of the interviews showed that multiple types of masculinity exist in Taiwan and traditional Chinese masculinity has evolved and changed in the contemporary Taiwanese society. Based on the male images (N=1,284) from a stratified sample of four months in 2009 in four men's magazines, results of the study showed that editorials and male images in Western and hybrid men's magazines were also different from those in the local men's magazine. Close examination of individual advertisements form semiotic analysis showed that advertisers try to relate muscle building to Wu masculinity; athleticism, male bonding, feminine masculinity are promoted by advertisers; metrosexuality seems the ideal masculinity in Taiwanese society. In conclusion, the study suggested that (1) international men's magazines, either from the West or Japan, can be seen as culture hybrid to construct masculinity in their contents. Although international men's magazines are all hybrid, hybridity in men's magazines that are from countries that are geographically close are much influential than hybrid magazines from geographically far away; (2) the Chinese masculinity should not be labeled as feminine masculinity because it is ordinary manhood from the Chinese Wen tradition.

Digging up the kirkyard : death, readership and nation in the writings of the 'Blackwood's group', 1817-1839

Sharp, Sarah Elizabeth January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines the use of images of graveyards and death in the writings of the ‘Blackwood’s group’, a coterie of authors and poets who published their writing either within the influential Tory periodical Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine or with the publisher William Blackwood and Sons in the early decades of the nineteenth century. I argue that Blackwoodian texts like Lights and Shadows of Scottish Life (1822) by John Wilson imagined the rural Scottish graveyard as a repository for the traditional values and social structures which appeared to be under threat in the rapidly modernising British nation. In these texts the kirkyard functions as a key symbolic space, creating an imagined national ‘home’ for British readers in the idealised Scottish village graveyard. This nostalgic pastoral image of the eternal kirkyard is however in opposition to Blackwood’s Magazine’s reputation for violent, urbane wit and sensational gothic stories. The Noctes Ambrosianae and Tales of Terror articulate a modern, masculine and elite image of the magazine which seem at odds with the domestic, pastoral Scottishness offered in the ‘Scotch novels’ and regional tales. William Blackwood’s publishing house and magazine are at once synonymous with two apparently opposing world views and target readerships, and this tension is most strongly articulated in the tidy Scots graves and unburied corpses of the magazine’s fiction. I examine works published by John Wilson, J.G. Lockhart, James Hogg, D.M. Moir, Henry Thomson, Robert McNish, John Galt, Samuel Warren, James Montgomery and Thomas de Quincey, between the magazine’s foundation in 1817 and the increasing defection of these original Blackwoodians to other periodicals and the retirement of the Noctes Ambrosianae series in the late 1830s. I identify a series of conventions associated with an idealised Blackwoodian rural death before examining the ways in which tales where the conventions of this 'good death' and burial are disrupted by crime, bodysnatching, epidemic disease and suicide challenge or reinforce the world view the rural texts articulated. Chapter one focuses on eighteenth-century ideas about death and sociability. Looking at a group of texts which span from Robert Blair’s The Grave (1746) to Edmund Burke’s revolutionary period writings of the 1790s, it traces what Ester Schor has termed a ‘transition from the “natural” sympathies of the Enlightenment to the “political” sympathies of a revolutionary age’ (75). I argue that in particular Edmund Burke’s creation of a conservative image of nation based on tradition and ancestry acted as a foundation for the type of politicised engagement with the dead which characterised the work of the Blackwood’s group. Chapter two builds upon recent identifications of a Blackwoodian regional tale tradition by highlighting the crucial role of death and the kirkyard in this provincial fiction. Placing John Wilson’s highly popular story series Lights and Shadows of Scottish Life in relation to contemporary debates about Evangelical religion, readership and nation, reveals a series of ideas and conventions which can be identified in other rural writing by John Galt, J.G. Lockhart and James Hogg. Having established an image of what a ‘good death’ might look like and stand for within the Blackwoodian imagination, I turn my attention to deaths which do not follow these conventions. Chapter three explores Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine’s well-documented fascination with spectacular violence in three of the magazine’s signature Tales of Terror and Thomas De Quincey’s ‘On Murder’ essays (1827, 1839). Chapter four looks at three stories from the magazine which feature bodysnatching, focusing on the role which doctors and provincial communities play within these texts. Chapter five compares responses to the 1832 cholera epidemic by James Montgomery and James Hogg. Finally, Chapter six argues for a reading of James Hogg’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) which foregrounds the role of the suicide’s body within the narrative based on the representations of suicide in contemporary discussion and in Galt’s Annals of the Parish (1821).

MARCELO DE MELLO RANGEL 19 October 2011 (has links)
[en] For Gonçalves de Magalhães, Francisco de Sales Torres Homem and Manuel Araújo Porto Alegre, the Empire of Brazil should be civilized, that is to say he needed to overcome his way of being selfish, and that in favor of the éthos of love. It was, therefore, to overcome the colonial heritage more radical, namely the habit of thinking and acting from the inclinations, appetites, to the detriment of interests concerning the community or the nation. The early Romantics were dedicated, then the ethical reorientation of the good society, and this from a melancholic atmosphere based on the tension between pessimism and distrust on the one hand and optimism and hope for another. Now more pessimistic, sometimes desperate, sometimes more optimistic about the possibility of realizing their civilizing project, would produce his poetry and his studies of history and political economy from a two-pronged strategy, namely, to entice your readers causing them the assumption of how to be love, and this despite a rational decision originated, and at the same time, provide useful lessons fundamental to the achievement of moral and material progress of the nation, dedicated lessons, in particular, the logical demonstration the need to abolish immediately slavery.

Alberti, Lucimar January 2017 (has links)
In "Discourses on Health in the pages of Veja Magazine (1968 - 1974)" I deal with health discourses, published in a vehicle of communication that was emerging in Brazil in the late of 1960s, in this case, Veja Magazine. Taking into account the few health productions in Brazil during the selected period, this dissertation aims to verify and characterize the discourses on health existing in the period and linked in the Magazine, mainly in the section entitled "Medicine". For this, I use in this academic work some assumptions specific to Cultural Studies, such as the understanding that magazines educate people through their reports, offering not only information but also ways to understand the world. In addition, I use the concept of discourse to map what was thought and what was said, even broadly, about health in Brazil and in the world. I also try to demonstrate how Veja Magazine's reports and the discourses that articulated maintained a strong relationship with the historical moment of the analyzed period.

Silva, Tiago Cortinaz da January 2014 (has links)
This research analyzes the journalistic discourses of education in Veja, a Brazilian magazine, between 2002 and 2012. Journalistic discourses were taken as the object of this study due to the understanding of media and information as a social construction. Veja magazine was chosen as the field of this analysis because it is Brazil‟s biggest magazine in circulation, the third largest weekly news magazine in the world and the largest outside the United States. That period of time was chosen since it was an important moment for Brazilian economy, when a significant economic growth of the country‟s middle class – Veja‟s target readership – happened. I identified media as one of the social structures that has been continuously mobilized for education, under the assumptions of a deficit in Brazilian basic education, and low qualification of teachers – both in comparison to the rest of the world via rankings or, sometimes, to a certain selective past. Through the concepts of intertextuality and representation of social actors (FAIRCLOUGH, 2003), I realized that present and absent voices in Veja‟s journalistic discourses about education consider basic education as a public and collective national project that requires managerial inputs, considering the urgency of an economic development for the country. In this sense, Veja magazine presents the work of teachers, at the same time, as the problem and the solution. It is both critical - to formation and performance of teachers - and scrupulous - as it recognizes the need to value teachers. If we consider that all social problems and their possible solutions are partly discursive (RESENDE; RAMALHO 2013), hegemonic discourses built through the articulation of certain ideologies‟ alliances (HALL, 2009) with the common sense, even though never guaranteed, are powerful. This research conclusions suggest that counter-hegemonic alternatives to managerialist projects must always be accompanied also by discursive alternatives, and journalistic discourses about education, more than objects of study, should also be seen as objects of dispute.

A imprensa conselheira : comunicação de massa, indivíduo e cotidiano / The adviser press : mass communication, individual and daily life

Geraldo Garcez Condé 04 October 2004 (has links)
The intention of this work is to understand how pieces of advice, formulas and models offered by the press get into peoples daily life on the present days. These journalistic products typified by the prescriptive discourse would have the explicit purpose of teaching, guiding, directing, persuading, influencing, providing or modifying the behavioral patterns of the individuals who consume them in a situation of daily and normality experience. The phenomenas aspects are considered face to a broad social-historical context understood as an ideal-typical daily life of the individuals whose experiences are partially substantial mediated. On this situation, the advisory press products concern a map which can be used by the reader to achieve an operational knowledge of daily reality and about oneself and also a social imaginary narratives repertoire that plays the role of the present day search of happiness through mass communication. The material used at his work is composed by magazine articles and readers letters published at the magazines Claudia, Playboy and Veja. The theoretical referential tries to cope with getting the multiple dimensions of the advisory press, permitting its approach through a double key: as a source of symbolical resources which can be used by daily individuals at the process of daily reality construction and also like a set of narratives gathered around an idea of a soluble feeling sick overcame by the mandatory search of happiness

This research has the intension to study the characteristics of the journalistic information graphics (or just infographics). This tool links verbal and non-verbal languages in transmitting mass media information. A historical retrospective of infographics and press media will also be presented because these historical events are essential to contextualize the current mass media. A linkage between infographic and Peirce's Theory of Signs will be stablished in order to analyze the infographics that have been published in Mundo Estranho magazine. This work will be able to help in the construction of theoretical bases regarding journalistic infographics which is a little-studied subject in Brazil, even among communication courses.
