Islamic Authority and the Articulation of Jihad: Approaching Jihadist Authority through the Islamist Magazine Inspire

LaChette, Aleisha 15 June 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the impact of changing views of legitimate Islamic authority on conceptions of jihad. Spearheaded by militant Sunni movements, jihad in the modern era has taken on new purposes and practices that more closely resemble general understandings of terrorism than the regulated forms of warfare cemented during the classical period of Islam. Contrasting the historical authority of the caliph or political leader and the ulama over the concept of jihad with the modern state and ulama's lack of control over the concept offers a partial explanation of the divergence of contemporary jihad from the classical or traditional views. This thesis uses the concept of individual jihad as communicated through the jihadist magazine Inspire, to counter the dismissal of radical articulations of jihad as un-Islamic and therefore illegitimate, and to demonstrate how such forms instead reflect the opportunistic replacement of traditional political and religious authority by the jihadist as the true defender of Islam and consequently the rightful interpreter of Islamic law. / Master of Arts

A TEI Transcription of Conversations with Lord Byron

Smith, Melissa Ann 09 June 2010 (has links)
This project accompanies a TEI transcription of Lady Blessington's Conversations with Lord Byron, currently available on the Life and Times of Lord Byron online archive. Although often cited in biographies of Lord Byron, Lady Blessington's Conversations of Lord Byron has received little critical attention. Further, the genre of Blessington's work, the conversation as a biographical form, suffers the same dearth of critical material. My aims, then, are to 1) present a brief history of the conversation as biographical form; 2) examine the publication history of the Conversations and underscore the social dimensions of its publication; and 3) evaluate Blessington's rhetorical strategies in the Conversations and to argue that Blessington's work is superior to two other accounts of Byron (by James Kennedy and Thomas Medwin) in terms of its psychological depth. / Master of Arts

A l’ombre du roman-feuilleton : Marie Aycard et la circulation internationale du feuilleton-nouvelle parisien et de la variété (autour de 1840) : Un acteur oublié de la communication de masse dans la sphère médiatique de son temps / In the Shadow of the Serial Novel : Marie Aycard and the international circulation of the Parisian short story and miscellanies (around 1840) : a forgotten actor in the mass media of his time

Buard, Jean-Luc 17 December 2015 (has links)
As a novelist and newspaperman, Marie Aycard (1794-1859) has been considered as a minor and obscure writer, but he undoubtedly belongs to the literary history. A witness of the great changes in the press world of his time (1830-1848), he is actively involved in the development of a new kind of contents, more devoted to entertainment, in publishing weekly chronicles and short stories, from 1837-1842 and after, which gain a large audience in being widely reproduced in Paris newspapers and magazines, in provincial papers, or foreign ones, in French but also in translation, which found their way in all the major European languages, on all the continents. This massive international circulation makes their author a kind of unofficial ambassador (and often anonymous) of the French and Parisian culture all over the world and in many periodicals and media of his time. The recent digitization of these periodicals and newspapers offers a unique way to clearly measure this phenomenon, and an opportunity to take in consideration a new tool to gauge the "popularity" of such contents. It also offers new approaches and insights in the newspaper network, organized and world-connected, ready for its continuous expansion, as early as the 1840s.

The focus of this work is the analysis and discussion about how women's magazines, constantly criticized by feminist movements, were important in the breakdown of paradigms by inserting in their pages issues discussed by feminism that was forged in Brazil in the period, bringing them to the fore, out of academic and political debates. Grande Hotel magazine, following the transformations that were provoked by the social movements, brought discussions about female sexuality, equality between men and women, and women's rights. We started the study through the magazine's trajectory to try to understand the changes that the magazine spent in its years of circulation. Later, we followed the analysis of the contents that approached the themes discussed by the feminist movements in Brazil, and finally we observed how the fotonovelas, a perennial element in the publication, expressed these themes and the changes arising from the context in which the journal was inserted / O objeto de estudo desta pesquisa são as mudanças pelas quais passou a revista Grande Hotel, concentrado o estudo a partir da efervescência das pautas do movimento feminista no Brasil nos anos 1970.

This work describes Revista USP trajectory across its several historical phases and analyses the main characteristics that make it a unique publication among the university magazines. During this process, Revista USP is being consolidated as a periodical with innovative aspects, thus being characterized as a hybrid medium, which makes it difficult to be ranked in a specific classification, such as a cientific, a straight academic or a technical magazine. As an institutional magazine, it accomplishes more than one function and is permanently identified with Universidade de São Paulo.

Leão, Callenciane Ferreira January 2015 (has links)
Storytelling is part of journalistic practice, and the digital storytelling enables the construction of stories prepared for the digital environment. This dissertation aims to investigate how the magazine Época - pioneered the use of digital media in Brazil - tells stories on the tablet. For this, it is taken into account the revised conceptual contours about magazine in this context, from characteristics of the print media and digital media, following authors like Benetti (2013), Scalzo (2011) and Cunha (2011), and of journalistic product types in digital format, as quoted categories by Pellanda (2012), Souza (2013), Canavilhas (2014) and, above all, Dourado (2013). Then, there is an observation about the general parts of storytelling, according to Pinto (2012), associated with the use of structures for magazines on the tablet, as shown by Garcia (2012), and digital elements, according to Silvia and Anzur (2011). To achieve the goal, it was established an observation sheet that has been made to the study of the seven editions published in 2014 presenting cover and cover story with dynamic and multimedia features. In the results, there is contribution of parts, structures and digital storytelling elements to deepen themes, the contextualization of information and experience with the story.
