The Rise and Fall of ThisDay Newspaper : The Significance of Advertising to Its Demise

Bassey, Eno Abasiubong 31 October 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 0413406F - MA dissertation - School of Journalism and Media Studies - Faculty of Humanities / This study examines the rise and fall of ThisDay newspaper by examining its strategies to break into the South African media market. The study places ThisDay in the context of certain factors of the political economy of the South African media and examines how the dynamics of advertising contributed to the collapse of the newspaper. By analysing perspectives from Bagdikian (1983) among others, that the success and failure of the media depends on its success or failure to attract advertising revenue. The study examines the specific strategies used by ThisDay’s management to attract advertising as a key source of revenue to determine how the failure or lack of such strategies could have played a contributory role in the collapse of the newspaper. Among the factors examined is the further consolidation of ownership in the competing media companies. The intricacies and complex relationships that existed between the South African media its owners and advertisers are examined, to determine whether the actions of the competition contributed to ThisDay’s failure. The findings of this study show that ThisDay’s entry met what was arguably a major need for quality news in South Africa’s daily newspaper market; this however, did not prevent its closure. It had to grapple with too many challenges, most of them internal. The underlying reason for most of the problems management encountered was the unavailability of financial resources to run a paper of ThisDay’s magnitude. However the strategies that its management adopted as well as the business plan were way off the mark. The demise of ThisDay newspaper is a loss to South African journalism in two aspects; the industry lost a quality newspaper which greatly improved the level of South African journalism (the quality of which many now say is in a decline). Secondly, its failure will serve as a deterrent to any aspiring entrepreneur who would like to put together a quality product, the perception being that quality newspapers are not profitable. With the demise of ThisDay newspaper and recently the Nova, it seems that the South African print media environment has closed its doors to new entrants.

[en] THE MEASUREMENT OF LIBERTY: THE COURT PRESS DURING THE REGENCY PERIOD (1831-1833) / [pt] A MEDIDA DA LIBERDADE: A IMPRENSA DA CORTE NO PERÍODO REGENCIAL (1831-1833)

FERNANDA COSTA CARVALHO DE ANDRADE 10 January 2007 (has links)
[en] The dissertation analyses the role of the press during the Brazilian Regency Period (1831-1840), based on the periodical publications Aurora Fluminense and A Torre de Babel, respectively edited by the politically moderate Evaristo Ferreira da Veiga and the Restoration partisan José Ignácio de Abreu e Lima, identifying the political projects that, more than being propagated by said publications, motivated their creation. Additionally, the dissertation focuses on the conceptual matrices handled by said writers: the constitutionalism and the civic humanism. The theme brings to life a link between Imperial Brazil and the rest of the American Continent through liberal institutions and through the attempt to emphasize the contrast with the Old Continent, in spite of the difference in the political regimen. Finally, the dissertation analyses the debate that had just started in the press, present in both publications: the civility in journalism agenda, aimed at creating an horizontal control stance, by demanding the observation of a certain behavior by the journalists, and, simultaneously, focused on clearing the definition of the range of action of public writers, in one side, and the State, in the other.

Le journal littéraire au XVIIIe siècle : une nouvelle culture des textes et de la lecture (1711-1777) / The Literary Newspaper in the XVIIIth Century : a New Culture of Writing and Reading (1711-1777)

Dumouchel, Suzanne 04 December 2012 (has links)
The doctoral thesis is interested in the practices of reading and writing introduced in the literary newspapers of the XVIIIth century. It leans on five representative periodicals : « the Nouvelliste du Parnasse » de Desfontaines and Granet, « the Pour et Contre » de Prévost, « the Mercure de France », « the Année littéraire » of Fréron, and « the Journal des Dames ». Three characteristics distinguish them from the other newspapers of that time : the place granted to the readers, the variety of the subjects treated in this newspapers, and finally their critical vocation. In the first part we will consider the literary periodical as a new means of information and communication, which redefines the auctoriales practices of the editors and which draws the outlines of a reader society. The second part of the thesis shifts the interest of the editor to the reader. He is introduced to the critical practice of texts. This training of the reader contributes to the implementation of a space of dialogue within the literary journal. All the readers bind together and become a community, which has very specific characteristics, that will be the object of the third and last part. Periodicals recreate a virtual space of sociability which gets organized in a new mode of relation to the world and of relation to oneself, prefiguring the role of internet today. The readers appropriated a new object, the potentialities of which are yet to be invented. The literary periodical appears as a tool of broadcasting a culture and as a demonstration of a cultural evolution with social dimension. They are established in a media space which testifies of the meeting between a technical device and cultural uses.

Veículos de comunicação comunitários e jornais de bairro na cidade de São Paulo / Communitarian media anda local newspaper in the city of São Paulo

Giovancarli, Luiza 17 October 2017 (has links)
Conclui-se que, apesar das diferenças entre eles, os veículos de comunicação locais vêm atuando como canais com relevante discussão política, desafiam a crise do impresso e reinventam as formas de se fazer comunicação local, o que demonstra a necessidade de mais estudos sobre a produção e a recepção dos mesmos / The research aims to map experiences of local communication in São Paulo, that is, communitarian media and local newspapers, and analyze their performance in the territories in which they are inserted. For this, a technical survey and two content analyzes of the selected media were carried out. As a result, it is noted that communitarian media are not a phenomenon of the 1970s and that communication groups in the city are not necessarily linked to social movements, neighborhood associations or NGOs. They do not have wide popular participation, although there are residents in the management and writing / production of content, especially of young communication activists and have a great involvement with digital networks, websites and blogs. In relation to the local newspapers these are not migrating to the digital medium. Although they have sites and digital version, the printed ones continue with force in the territories. There are new formats, such as local online portals, with new logics involving advertising, the participation of readers and journalists. They do not have merely informative content, but also work with guidelines that encourage popular mobilization and informal education, in part with conservative values. It is concluded that, despite the differences between them, the local media have been acting as local channels with relevant political discussion, defying the printing crisis and reinventing the ways of doing local communication, which demonstrates the need for further studies on their production and reception

Framing Climate Change : A study of the climate change coverage in a Swedish daily newspaper between 1992-2018 / Framing Climate Change : A study of the climate change coverage in s Swedish daily newspaper between 1992-2018

Englund, Niklas January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how Dagens Nyheter uses frames when covering climate change between 1992-2018. Reports from IPCC has shown that the scientists has become more convinced over the years about the causes and effects of climate change. That makes it relevant to study if Dagens Nyheter has changed their coverage as media has the power to convey their content in many ways. This study uses framing theory which suggests that media can select some aspects of the reality, thus making them more salient in text. A quantitative content analysis was used on 550 articles, which answered to multiple questions in a coding-manual to see which frame, out of five, was used in that article. The five frames in the coding-manual was The responsibility frame, The conflict frame, The human interest frame, The economy/consequence frame and The ecology/science frame. The study showed that there were a wider spread of frames between 1992-1998, with The responsibility frame, The economy/consequence frame and The conflict frame most frequently present. However, 2000-2018 was dominated by The responsibility frame which means that the government is responsible, suggests solutions to the climate change or calls for urgent actions.

Humour, a tool to write History : Forges and the contradictions of Francoist Spain.

Ruaud, Olivier 13 December 2017 (has links)
In 1977, two years after General Franco has died, in a transitional process Forges,a drawer, published comics in Los Historiciclos, a story of Spain under Franco’s regime. Resuming apparently the organization of historiographical publication and focusing on a lack of information or simply disinformation, the drawer ironically plays with official and non-official aspects of the history he relentlessly questions. Beyond the historical aspects he emphasises, his work is also the opportunity to explore different narrative technics, either graphic or textual so as to challenge, with humour, Spain under almots 40 years of Franco’s dictatorship.

Vanessa Gama.pdf: 2544191 bytes, checksum: 011f71b6daed3f1347957ef226df861b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-14 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / Change is undoubtedly a fundamental phenomenon, which allows the renewal and preservation of the language over time. As a product and producer of a given society, it is natural for language to accompany her dynamism. Linguistic changes take place primarily in speech, especially in informal contexts, where there is a lower level of monitoring and a reduced distance between the speaker and his interlocutor. It is in everyday speech that the sender has the freedom to access the potentialities of the system and to dare in the elaboration of new words, aiming at the improvement of the communication. This process of linguistic creation and renewal is called neology. Its product, in turn, is called the neologism. In this perspective, when adopting the neologism as object of study, we look for a corpus that would allow the extraction of a significant number of neological lexias present in the present Portuguese. Thus, we selected 70 copies of the popular Bahia Massa! newspaper, referring to the months of January to March of 2015, which present in their headlines, calls and titles several neological lexias constant in the speech of their public-reader. We base the research on the analysis and classification of the 203 new words detected, based on theoretical studies based on neology and lexicology of the Portuguese language. The identification of the neological character was made from current dictionaries, such as Houaiss (2009), Aur?lio (2010) and Dicio (online). The parameter for the organization of the data consisted of: a) grammatical classification, b) meaning, c) type of formation process, d) contexts in which they appear along the copies. This procedure allowed us to observe that the most frequent type of neologism in the corpus is the formal one, and the most productive lexical process is the semantic one. In addition, it was possible to verify that the creation of neologisms by the speakers occurs in a systematic way, in informal contexts of communication and with a definite purpose, that is, of propagating ideas and concepts.

O estudo / In the present historical moment we are living, the search for knowledge and information about what is happening in our neighborhood, city, country or even ever part of the world, seems to be running along with our basic needs. To improve the media quality and keep its social responsibility, Press Councils appeared, opening space to its audience to raise quality. From this point on, this research consists in a study in the Reader’s Council of the Zero Hora newspaper, the most important newspaper in the State of Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil, to describe and to analyze the dynamics operations of this Council, observing if it interferes or not on the elaboration process of the newspaper’s editions.
