Previous issue date: 2015-09-30 / This work aims to reflect on the discursive relations evidenced in newspaper editorials "Parana" with partisan politics. The study corpus refers to the reading and analysis of fifteen editorials have stated regarding the hydroelectric plant Itaipu Binacional in the years 1979, 1984 and 2007. The entire study was based on the archaeological method advocated by Michel Foucault (2013) which allowed recognize the most varied emergency conditions and production of speech and respect beams contributing to the construction of favorable partisan discursive relations, or not, the federal government above us. To this end, it started with the assumption that the mass media constitute in oligopolies because defend their interests through the editorial, which propagates the discourse of these groups. As noted in this context the news can be seen as a product and market-driven. In the description of statements, it appears that the various linguistic marks corroborate the newspaper's intention to manifest their political position. In 1979, the newspaper company inclined to the interests proposed by the Federal Government that Itaipu would be national development reference, silencing the Discourse Formation in relation to the movement of struggle for land, which permeated society at that time. It is observed that in 1984, the country experiencing the transition from dictatorship to democracy, and "Paraná" explicit, in its editorial, the political clashes of this period and, through discourse, approaching opposition from FD to the regime current, showing the dispersion of speech. However, at times, editorials express regularity in his speech, directing it to the vainglorious FD uttered by the military. Already in 2007, in full democracy, the discourse presents a regularly when his editorials refer to Itaipu Binacional, as a synonym for development. By analyzing the statements, which address the issues on the plant, it can be seen that the regularity of the speech was given by bundles of relations in the political sphere that the news organization had in production periods of the studied editorials.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, not only in Europe, but also in America, occurred a change in the cultural paradigm that lifted up the science as the noblest of the human achievements. Inserted in this modernizing context of the cult of science, the men of letters who discoursed about science in the periodicals looked for to disseminate the seed of technical-scientific knowledge to the whole population. Such vulgarizing practices had as a background a civilizing project that linked not only the material development but also the moral development of nineteenth-century society. This dissertation starts of this universe and aims to approach the similarities of the periodicals that aimed to popularize the science during the second half of the nineteenth century, from ideas, beliefs and common themes. By rescuing the discourses, the linguistic repertoire and the interests disseminated in this press, it is possible to capture a connection of the periodicals that shared the same scientific culture, despite the heterogeneity of the publications. All these scientific journals that manifested themselves in different ways were immersed in a sociocultural ocean, which aimed the science as a moral progress of the society. In addition, we will promote the analysis of the interaction of this press with society. In the intention to encourage the technical and scientific application, the press has opened a way to contact with their readers in order to establish as a medium for the people to present their inventions, machines and industries.

The South African Commercial Advertiser and the Eastern Frontier, 1834-1847: an examination of the ways in which and the sources from which it reported frontier conflictsFrye, John January 1968 (has links)
[From Introduction]. The name of John Fairbairn is remembered with honour in South Africa for the part he played in the achievement of a freer press in the Cape Colony, in the campaign to prevent Britain from establishing a convict station on Cape soil, and in the movement which resulted in the establishment of a form of representative government in the Cape in 1853. More controversial is his share, as the editor of the first modern newspaper in the Colony, in a campaign to secure just treatment for the natives both inside and outside of the Colony. It is with his treatment of the conflicts, both small and great, between the Colony and the AmaXhosa tribes on its Eastern Frontier that this study is concerned.

The anatomy of panic: the impact of naval scares and public opinion in late nineteenth-century BritainO'Shea, Iain 29 August 2017 (has links)
Popular navalism in nineteenth-century Britain was a natural but not inevitable outcome of the geographical reality of an island nation possessing a large maritime empire. The long-term evolution of democracy and the rapid growth of the mass-circulation press transformed the civil-military relationship in the last decades of the century, leading to a series of naval scares. These were episodes of intense public interest and engagement in naval affairs, manifested through Parliamentary speeches, newspaper and periodical contributions and in private correspondence. Naval historians have emphasized technological and strategic narratives in the modernization of the Royal Navy, and in the process neglected the dramatic political struggles in 1884–94 that provided the vital precondition for naval reform and expansion — money. The relevant question is not whether the naval scares were objectively justified, but how public discourses were employed by individuals and interest groups to transform the naval political economy by creating a ‘blue-water’ strategic common sense that would support the creation of ocean-going battlefleets designed to win and maintain ‘command of the sea.’ A triangular relationship between the Government, the navy and the public, connected largely through the press, rapidly evolved over the course of three naval scares, in 1884, 1888 and 1893. A pro-navy political equilibrium was constructed that raised peacetime naval expenditure to unprecedented heights and laid the foundations for the more widely known reforms of the twentieth-century ‘Fisher Era.’ / Graduate / 2018-08-21

A critical analysis of colonial and postcolonial discourses and representations of the people of Mozambique in the Portuguese newspaper ‘O Século de Joanesburgo’ from 1970-1980Da Costa, Dinis Fernando January 2014 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The aim of this thesis is to probe how Mozambican people were represented or constructed in the colonial and post-colonial periods through the columns of the Portuguese newspaper, ‘O Século de Joanesburgo’. The study examines a corpus of 58, 070 tokens (consisting of 100 articles, 50 for colonial and 50 for postcolonial periods), which were systematically selected from the political, sport, letters to the reader and editorial domains published from 1970 to 1980. The analytical framework for this study is threefold. It is informed by corpus linguistics (CL) as described by, amongst others, McEnery and Wilson (1996/2001) and Bennett (2010); critical discourse analysis (CDA), in particular the work of Van Dijk (1996; 2003), Wodak (1995; 2011) and Wodak and Meyer (2009) and multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) as used by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996; 1998; 2006), Kress (2010) and Machin and Mayr (2012)

Shaping public opinion : an investigation of media framing of Trevor Manuel in 1996 and in 2007, in the Financial MailMbunyuza, Lindani January 2011 (has links)
The discussion that follows seeks to critically examine the manner in which a South African financial publication, the Financial Mail (FM) magazine, reported on the country’s Finance Minister over two time periods. The specific time periods are April – June 1996, and February – April 2007. This will be done to assess whether the style of reporting changed over time. In order to accurately analyse the coverage, a content analysis of a number of articles published by the FM over two periods will be conducted. The first period to be examined correlates with Manuel’s first three months in office (April to June 1996) as finance minister, a role he took over after the resignation of then Finance Minister Chris Liebenberg, and the subsequent cabinet re-shuffle. This time period also coincides with the adoption of the internationally acclaimed South African constitution which pre-supposes, amongst others, freedom of the press. Manuel’s first three months in office furthermore coincided with the African National Congress’ (ANC) first period in government under the stewardship of President Nelson Mandela, having taken over power in 1994. The second time period selected is during Manuel’s 11th year in office (February to April 2007). The second time period coincides with a different economic and social situation, with the country’s economy having strengthened to the extent of recording a budget surplus. Relevant media theories and principles will be studied to evaluate which theories, if any, reflect the Financial Mail’s style of writing, language use and choice of stories to cover regarding Minister Manuel. An analysis of the first time period will include a look at the socio-economic conditions that prevailed at the respective times, against the background of the political situation during both periods. Dominant economic policies implemented and decisions taken during both periods relevant to the particular office Manuel held will be critically examined, since FM is a financial publication mostly covering financial and economic news. Research conducted will be qualitative in nature, and include an in-depth content analysis of articles.

The Future is Not Black and White: A Study of a Twitter-based Community of Practice on the Future of NewspapersKealey, Caitlin January 2012 (has links)
Social media has created a two-pronged dilemma for the journalism world. On one side is an attack of the basic notions of identity and authority for an age-old profession while on the other side supporting journalists by making available an endless amount of new tools and resources for them to work with. This thesis establishes and examines the online community of practice that has formed in the crosshair of the two sides, where the future of newspapers is a hotly debated subject. Using innovative data collection, the conversations of 20 experts is studied qualitatively through computer mediated discourse analysis to examine and explore the debate while providing consideration of the key issues to allow for an in-depth study.

A peculiar scenario is presented to the reader by the daily movement of the streets of Belo Horizonte/MG: the coexistence of morning rush and reading, this activity commonly thought of as action that requires silence and concentration. This panorama urges the reader to question explicit and recurrent discourses like that "Brazilian reads little" or overvaluation, also common, of some typesprinted genders over others. To this general and universal vision of the reading practice, we set another point of view that takes it and states it through its multiplicity of forms and possibilities. There are distinct objects to read, different readers, many ways of doing it, many motivations, etc.In this sense, we propose to find record and reflect upon the reading practices of the newspaper Super Notícia (Super News), experienced in a certain context of time and place, certain community of readers, in shared means and ways to read and to produce meanings to reading. We have followed the three poles that generally tense the printed word - its production, circulation and reception - trying to consider them interconnected and taking them as the horizons of our research.Along this research, we try to understand the reasons that led the newspaper, in a few years, to get to the level of centenarian papers of major Brazilian media groups, at least in quantitative terms. At the poles of circulation and reception of the printed word, we went in search of their forms of dissemination among the readers; their modes of reception, application and reading; representations at stake; as well as possible interactions existing from reading the newspaper Super Notícia. The main theoretical references that guided this research are Roger Chartier, Robert Darnton and their studies of cultural history. In Michel de Certeau we seek to the relationship between reader - text and everyday life as an analytic dimension. We put forward interviews, direct observations and photographs involving characters of the three poles. We used the transcripts of the interviews, of the written records in field diaries and photographic images to write down our final reflection / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutora em Educação
