Man, Society, and Knowledge in the Islamist discourse of Sayyid QutbBouzid, Ahmed T. 24 April 1998 (has links)
Sayyid Qutb's conceptions of man and society inform and are themselves informed by his theory of human and divine knowledge. Our aim in this dissertation is, first, to highlight the intricate relationships between Qutb's ontology and his epistemology, and, second, to point to the active context of Qutb's discourse: how did his theory of man, society, and knowledge relate to his language of political dissent and his strategy for change and revolution? Qutb remains an enduring influence on young Muslims and has left a deep mark on the discourse of politically activist Islamism. An underlying concern that runs through our analysis will be to address the question: why is Qutb still relevant? The answer we provide highlights the inseparability between Qutb's conception of human nature, his paradigm for the just and ideal society, his theories on mundane and revealed epistemology, and his strategy for social and political reform. We shall argue that the Qutbian discourse endures because Qutb offers his co-religionists a powerfully integrated conception of the "Islamic solution" that achieves a unique blending between the values of "authenticity" and those of "modernity". Qutb's writings articulate an unapologetic "life-conception" of Islam that insisted on standing on par with other "life-conceptions"; Muslims could take pride in knowing that Islam exhorted development, but with an eye towards maintaining a "balance" between the "material" and the "spiritual", unlike communism and capitalism, which neglected "spirituality" in favor of "animal materialism"; the "Islamic conception" outlined by Qutb provided the reader with a conceptual framework within which a sophisticated critique of colonialism could be carried out. Moreover, Qutb also provided the modern Islamist with a vocabulary that gives voice to the economic and social concerns of an emerging lower middle class aspiring to fulfill its mundane dreams in modern, mid-20th century Egypt. The language Qutb used in his works was not the language of the elite intellectuals, whether Westernized modernists or traditional 'ulema. Qutb consciously articulated his thoughts in a language easily accessible to a readership literate enough to read his works, but not necessarily trained to actively penetrate the arcane corpus of the 'ulema. Upon reading Qutb and contrasting his language with that of his predecessors, it becomes clear that Qutb, more than any other thinker in the Egypt of his days, articulated a conception of Islam that consciously attempted to lay the foundations for an Islamic epistemology on the basis of a putatively Islamic ontology, denied the authority of "foreign life conceptions", claimed for Islam universal validity, asserted the active character of the "truly Muslim", decried the economic injustices which the masses were enduring, and rejected the traditional conception of the state as intrinsically benevolent. In short, his was a powerful call to merge the values of authenticity - unapologetic anti-imperialism, anti-elitism, and the insistence on the centrality of Islam - with the values of modernity - the impulse for asserting a comprehensive world-view, the pretension to universal validity, and the positive valuation of action and change in the context of welfare liberalism beholden to the will of the people. / Ph. This thesis argues for a critical examination of the published writings of Le Sony'r Ra, also known as Sun Ra, a groundbreaking jazz musician and philosopher of the 20th century. Recent redistribution of Sun Ra's musical output, which includes hundreds of releases on many record labels from the 1950's onward, has prompted a critical renaissance towards his influence on jazz orchestration, band management, do-it-yourself ethics, and structured improvisation In spite of this resurgence of interest in his music, his written corpus has failed to produce a comparable level of criticism or discussion. It is my firm belief that it is the body of work's relative scarcity in print, not its value as literature, that has kept the material underground for such a lengthy period of time. With the recent republication of Sun Ra's daunting body of poetry and prose, the discovery of early manuscripts, and the surfacing of relevant critical essays, the time has come to analyze his poetic position within the context of African-American philosophical thought. / Master of Arts

Sexual Harassment is a phenomenon that is widely disseminated around the globe. Sexual harassment has many forms not only physical but also verbal through unwelcomed comments. This thesis will focus on analysing the topic of sexual harassment from an Islamic perspective using Egypt as a case study to examine the phenomenon. The mentioned perspective will deliberately examine different apprehensions of Quranic verses in Islam related to roles and rights of women in society. In that context, the thesis will discuss how some interpretations, among the interpretations presented in the paper, for certain Quranic verses can pragmatically lead to inequality between males and females in Egyptian society, which, eventually might cause/ lead to sexual harassment; the thesis will also focus on the other interpretations provided by Quranic scholars that presents different meanings to these verses, which endorses women’s rights and consequently rebukes sexual harassment against women in society. This paper will narrow down the study to discuss the root cause that creates the culture of the epidemic of sexual harassment in Egypt in terms of linking other factors to interpretations of the certain Quranic verses as referenced earlier. The reasons as it will be indicated in the paper are education, social norms, weak law implementation, and controversial interpretation of Quranic verses related to women’s rights and obligation in the society or in the household. The main question that this thesis is aiming to answer is how can different interpretations of Quranic verses related to women rights and obligations provoke sexual harassment against women in the Egyptian society? Are these interpretations embedded within the cultural norms and traditions? The paper will also discuss the state’s legal frameworks and its implementation against sexual harassment and how can the state response be improved. Moreover, the role of NGOs will also be discussed and what hinders their action against this phenomenon. The thesis has two main theories that are used throughout the whole paper which are Islamic Hermeneutics and Islamic Feminism, which mainly contributes to providing different doctrine interpretations of controversial Quranic verses related to women rights and the relevance of the verses within a certain context. In addition to that, the paper aims to discuss the relevance of the idea of having an Islamic approach to combat sexual harassment in collaboration with NGOs, International organizations, and some religious institutions.

Each culture in the world has their own unique way of ensuring this transition. Tomb art is the common element that links the unique cultures of New Kingdom Egypt and Classic Period Oaxaca, Mexico. Each culture's tomb art has its own way of guiding the deceased into the world beyond this one. There are other common elements of the art, such as the idea of appeasement, that link the two civilizations that are thousands of miles apart as well as thousands of years apart. These commonalities can give researchers more insight on what is most important to gain access to the afterlife.

Compositional variation in aged and heated Pistacia resin found in Late Bronze Age Canaanite amphorae and bowls from Amarna, EgyptHeron, Carl P., Corr, L., Serpico, M., Stern, Ben, Bourriou, J. January 2003 (has links)
No / This study examines resinous deposits from the interior surfaces of sherds of imported Canaanite amphorae and locally produced bowls from the 18th Dynasty site of Tell el-Amarna, Egypt. Archaeological evidence indicates that the Canaanite amphorae were used for resin transport, whilst the bowls are associated with burning resin as incense. A number of characteristic triterpenoids identify all the resinous deposits from both vessel types as Pistacia spp. No other resins were observed and there was no evidence of mixing with oils or fats. The composition of the archaeological resins is more complex than that of modern pistacia resin, due to degradation and generation of new components. Experimental heating alters the relative abundance of the triterpenoid composition of modern pistacia resin. One component, the triterpenoid 28-norolean-17-en-3-one, is produced by such heating; however, an increase in its relative abundance in ancient samples is not matched by the archaeological evidence for heating. It is therefore not possible to use this component reliably to identify heated resin. However, additional unidentified components with a mass spectral base peak at m/z 453 have been associated with seven (out of 10) bowls and are not observed in resins associated with Canaanite amphorae. It is proposed that these components are more reliable molecular indicators of heating.

Yes / Vast numbers of votive mummies were produced in Egypt during the Late Pharaonic, Ptolemaic, and Roman
periods. Although millions remain in situ, many were removed and have ultimately entered museum
collections around the world. There they have often languished as uncomfortable reminders of antiquarian
practices with little information available to enhance their value as artefacts worthy of conservation or
display. A multi-disciplinary research project, based at the University of Manchester, is currently
redressing these issues. One recent aspect of this work has been the characterization of natural products
employed in the mummification of votive bundles. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and the
well-established biomarker approach, analysis of 24 samples from 17 mummy bundles has demonstrated
the presence of oils/fats, natural waxes, petroleum products, resinous exudates, and essential oils. These
results confirm the range of organic materials employed in embalming and augment our understanding of
the treatment of votives. In this first systematic initiative of its kind, initial findings point to possible trends in
body treatment practices in relation to chronology, geography, and changes in ideology which will be
investigated as the study progresses. Detailed knowledge of the substances used on individual bundles

The dissertation firstly looks at how the Arabic essay and short story developed in Egypt since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Then a discussion follows on the life and contribution of the Egyptian author, Mustafā Lutfī al-Manfalūtī, as representative of this literary evolution.
The general influences on Egyptian literature are discussed, and the general development of Arabic prose from 1850 onwards is then detailed, including the efforts to save Arabic literature from stagnation and degeneration. Following this, the focus is on the origins of the essay and short story. This leads to dealing with the growth and advancement of the essay and short story, together with the revival of the Arabic heritage and how the Arabic novel came into being.
Then Mustafā Lutfī al-Manfalūtīs biography, environmental circumstances and personalities that influenced his writings are focused on. Afterwards, the core discussion is Al-Manfalūtīs seven literary works, and his ideas and opinions as reflected in his writings.
