Be a Champion! Practical Strategies to Improve Your Practice Using Implementation Science

Tolliver, Matthew, Polaha, Jodi, Jaishankar, Gayatri, Campbell, Freda, Selzer, Lauren 19 October 2018 (has links)
This presentation will feature real world implementation examples from a seasoned interprofessional team working in a high needs primary care clinic. In Part 1 of our session (approx. 30 minutes), we will define implementation science and familiarize the audience with the EPIS framework (Aarons, Hurlburt, & Horwitz, 2011). We will also describe champion teams as a practical and efficient way to conduct implementation science on the clinic level. Part 2 of our session (approx. 30 min) will be dedicated to translating concepts learned in Part 1 to audience members' personal work via individual worksheets, small and large group discussion, and a question and answer period. Additionally, participants will gain access to an electronic toolkit with relevant articles, worksheets and materials to and build on ideas generated during the session and support their project implementation after the conference.

Environmental performance indicators for the lower Mekong subregion development

Amawatana, Chonchinee January 2008 (has links)
The application of environmental performance indicators (EPIs) has received increasing attention by both governments and international organisations as a tool for assessing complex environmental scenarios in national and local decision making processes. However, at the regional scale there is a gap in the application of EPIs, as this has not been well understood and defined due to a limited theoretical foundation and often insufficient data from all participant countries. The regional scale is important because it can incorporate natural ecosystems which often transcend national boundaries. A case study is developed for the Lower Mekong Subregion (LMS), where four riparian Southeast Asian countries (Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia, and Viet Nam) share the Lower Mekong River. The research proposes a conceptual framework to identify approaches for developing criteria for acceptable and appropriate EPIs which can be used to support and implement decision making processes by relevant organisations at the regional level. This research evaluates the application of environmental performance indicators using methodologies that assess cross-national quantitative and qualitative data and existing decision support systems. In addition, global and national indicators are examined for application and relation to the regional context. The research finds that the application of EPIs varies according to spatial scale, and is diverse among the four countries. Data availability is also identified as a major problem encountered during the development and selection of EPIs. The study finds that the governance of the existing regional body is ineffective due to differing agendas pursued by each participating country. This is because the current regional body is structured only to facilitate information exchange and cooperation in a limited manner, focusing so far only on water management issues. LMS regional goals need to be set in order to guide the stakeholders in identifying an appropriate set of EPIs. Most importantly, the research is intended to be a catalyst for encouraging the participants to integrate methods and other species of EPIs proposed in this research in their environmental assessment policies.

O material do recipiente afeta a dissipação do temefós. The use of temephos is essential for larvae control. The control of adults is carried out by spraying malathion on buildings, which poses occupational risks to those who apply it. We aimed to evaluate the temephos’ residual period in containers made out of different materials through validation of the analytical method; to propose a level of acceptability of larvae control; to determine the residual period of control (PRC) in rubber containers (tires); to propose a procedure to monitor PRC in Strategic Points (PEs); to evaluate dermal (EDs) and respiratory exposure (ERs); to compute the need to control potential exposure (EPs); to compare the efficiency of two protective equipments; to classify the safety of working conditions with and without protective equipments; to calculate the need to control exposure and time of safe work (TTS) provided by the protective equipment. The validated method is suitable to determine the concentration of temephos in water. The material of the container affects temephos degradation. Larvae control in tires is acceptable (90%) for 22 days after application. The procedure with tire samplers is suitable to determine PRC of larvae in PEs. EDs was much higher than ERs. 91.34% of EPs need to be controlled. The Agro Light protective equipment is more efficient than that of SUCEN and activities are considered safe only with its use. Activities performed with the protective equipment provided by SUCEN are considered safe if exposure control is increased by 11.4% or working time is reduced to the TTS of 1.4 hours

IS LOVE and other conceptual metaphors we live by : The semantics and gramatical structure of translated metaphors

Brodell, Josefin January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis I have combined cognitive metaphor theory, based mostly on the theories of the book Metaphors we live by by Lakoff & Johnson, with translation theory in order to try and show how the former can contribute with useful analytical tools within me- taphor translation. More specifically, my objective is to try and show how the knowled- ge of how metaphor works according to the cognitive perspective can help translating metaphors in a way that corresponds to the recommendations established by Peter Newmark (1992), i.e. try to maintain, in as much as posible, both grammatical structure and semantics. Through a qualitative analysis I considered gramatical structure and se- mantics of three original literary metaphors taken from the swedish book ”Gösta Ber- lings saga” by Selma Lagerlöf, and their translations to spanish made by Slaby (1955). I identified how well the translations corresponded to the recommendations of Newmark, as well as suggested new translations based on the results of the cognitive analysis. As a result we could see the importance, not only of maintaining both source domain and tar- get domain of the original metaphor, or at least the epistemical correspondences in case the source domain changed, but also the ontological correspondences, the specific con- tact, that the original metaphor establishes between these two domains, for a translation that better follows the norms defined by Newmark. In other words, limited to these th- ree examples, I managed to confirm that a cognitive approach to metaphor can be very useful within translation.

No. of bitstreams: 1 PriscilaTM_DISSERT.pdf: 2986259 bytes, checksum: b2713c3bec2fea6430b0f74437631d89 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-04-27 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The caffeine is a mild psychostimulant that has positive cognitive effects at low doses, while promotes detrimental effects on these processes at higher doses. The episodic-like memory can be evaluated in rodents through hippocampus-dependent tasks. The dentate gyrus is a hippocampal subregion in which neurogenesis occurs in adults, and it is believed that this process is related to the function of patterns separation, such as the identification of spatial and temporal patterns when discriminating events. Furthermore, neurogenesis is influenced spatial and contextual learning tasks. Our goal was to evaluate the performance of male Wistar rats in episodic-like tasks after acute or chronic caffeine treatment (15mg/kg or 30mg/kg). Moreover, we assessed the chronic effect of the caffeine treatment, as well as the influence of the hippocampus-dependent learning tasks, on the survival of new-born neurons at the beginning of treatment. For this purpose, we used BrdU to label the new cells generated in the dentate gyrus. Regarding the acute treatment, we found that the saline group presented a tendency to have better spatial and temporal discrimination than caffeine groups. The chronic caffeine group 15 mg/kg (low dose) showed the best discrimination of the temporal aspect of episodic-like memory, whereas the chronic caffeine group 30mg/kg (high dose) was able to discriminate temporal order, only in a condition of greater difficulty. Assessment of neurogenesis using immunohistochemistry for evaluating survival of new-born neurons generated in the dentate gyrus revealed no difference among groups of chronic treatment. Thus, the positive mnemonic effects of the chronic caffeine treatment were not related to neuronal survival. However, another plastic mechanism could explain the positive mnemonic effect, given that there was no improvement in the acute caffeine groups / A cafe?na ? um leve psicoestimulante que em baixas doses tem efeitos cognitivos e mnem?nicos positivos, enquanto em altas doses tende a possuir efeitos prejudiciais sobre esses processos.
