Fioravante, Maria de Lourdes 08 November 1983 (has links)

We emphasized the relational field of History and Literature, notably the discursive practices of Era Nova, a magazine considered, at the time, as literary, illustrative and informative, meant for the urban middle classes. The texts we gave more attention in this work lead us to the displacement of affective relationships, especially, to the historical conditions that enable the diffusion of love as a reason for conjugal unions, as well as the association of romantic love centered on the consolidation of marriage and motherhood. We approached the intersection and influences occurred around the indications of modern, family values, gender identifications, sociability, sexual exercise and loving practices in daily life of people in the 1920s, in order to point out their social expectations.

Um réquiem feito de silêncios: suicídio, gênero e sexualidade na Era Digital / A Requiem made of silences: suicide, gender and sexuality in digital era

Thiago Nagafuchi 01 June 2017 (has links)
In this research, I aim to bring to light a relatively forgotten theme of inquiry, that is the intersections between suicide, gender and sexuality; and for doing such, the principles of the digital anthropology and ethnography are used as a lens to understanding the phenomenon. I try to comprehend how a contemporary interpretation of biopolitics, as in the names of social suffering, impacts on the forms the subjectivities are disputed and (re)made in everyday human experiences. This ethnography is based on materials, data, interviews and other information I gathered throughout these years to show how suicide is a giant terrae incognitae, full of vicissitudes and interstices that shape what Veena Das calls forms of life. This thesis has the following structure: first, I show the scenery though a description of the digital, suicide and the digital anthropology; then I report to the theoretical basis that will guide the analysis, from a general concept of life to the biopolitical frames of forms of life; following, there are some suicide cases and some possible views of understanding about the theme of suicide, with definitions and a critique through medicine anthropology; in what I call a second part, I introduce gender and sexuality as norms of regulations that connects directly the contemporary theories of social suffering and subjectivities; finally, the last part is based on a survey-like questionnaire posted on facebook groups, with answers, graphics and tables, and testimonies some respondents left; those who left a contact information and accepted telling me their stories, end the last part

Identificação modal de uma estrutura aeronáutica via algoritmo de realização de sistemas / Modal identification of an aeronautical structure via the eigensystem realization algorithm

Valdinei Sczibor 27 September 2002 (has links)
The determination of the dynamic characteristics of aircraft structures has become an extremely important issue in the aerospace industry, primarily due to the continuous demand for lighter and consequently more flexible structures. In this context, most aerospace structural system must be subjected to some form of modal verification prior to flight in order to ensure that the aircraft is free from any dangerous aeroelastic instability phenomena. The verification procedure often includes the experimental identification of structural characteristics such as the natural frequency, damping factors and normal modes using modal testing. In this work, a ground vibration testing (GVT) of a metallic wing of the Neiva Regente aircraft was accomplished in order to assess the frequency response functions. The basic identification method used for this study is the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm – ERA. It is an identification method, which is considered efficient and powerful, because it is capable to identify structures that present complex dynamic behaviour. The algorithm was valited through data obtained from a simulation of a hypothetical model and dynamic measurement accomplished in an aluminium beam. The experimental results, nevertheless, present computacional modes that must be removed from the model. Three confidence factors were used to qualify the results, namely the Modal Phase Collinearity – Weighted (MPCW), Extended Modal Amplitude Coherence (EMAC) and Consistent-Mode Indicator (CMI). The modes that presented higher confidence factor values were considered as the final result of the identification process. Then, the identificatin process was applied to a semi-wing of the Neiva Regente aircraft. This case has revealed a much harder identification procedure, where the complexity of the structure plus noisy data have led to a small number of identified modes

Analyzing Arctic surface temperatures with Self Organizing-Maps: Influence of the maps size

Mewes, Daniel, Jacobi, Ch. 26 September 2018 (has links)
We use ERA-Interim reanalysis data of 2 meter temperature to perform a pattern analysis of the Arctic temperatures exploiting an artificial neural network called Self Organizing-Map (SOM). The SOM method is used as a cluster analysis tool where the number of clusters has to be specified by the user. The different sized SOMs are analyzed in terms of how the size changes the representation of specific features. The results confirm that the larger the SOM is chosen the larger will be the root mean square error (RMSE) for the given SOM, which is followed by the fact that a larger number of patterns can reproduce more specific features for the temperature.

Men Like Us

Mears, Nicklaus 09 May 2015 (has links)
Men Like Us is a novel about David, a factory worker in Comstock, Michigan in his late twenties, who attempts to understand the death of his friend, Ben, and choose a future for himself, even as all the paths leading into his future seem to become more and more desolate. David faces the challenges of his life with his friends and roommates Mark and Andy, who also work in the local factory. In addition to Mark and Andy, David’s father plays an integral role in the plot as the head factory supervisor. The story is written in the first person and is recollected by David from a point in the future. The critical introduction for the novel examines the way in which the Great Recession in the Midwestern United States has provided the region’s writers with a unique voice, and how Men Like Us adds to that voice.

Stress experienced by the female participants in the primary and secondary educational milieus

Klos, Maureen Lilian 30 June 2003 (has links)
Stress, a feeling of pressure, tension, strain or threat, is a problem for contemporary female participants in the primary and secondary educational milieus who automatically respond to stressors (causes of stress), in the same way as women and girls in the past, since human beings have not changed psychologically and biologically over the millennia. Like their ancestors many female educators, learners and caregivers today do not return to a calm mental and physical state after an initial stress reaction. They often remain under stress, which results in emotional, behavioural, physical and cognitive manifestations of stress. Moreover, females may be predisposed to stress because of psychological, biological and social factors that have underpinned their response to time-related stressors that have faced them throughout history. Yet, history has also shown that women and girls taught and learnt successful stress coping mechanisms. Insight into these universal truths may provide educational solutions to a universal problem / Educational Studies / D.Ed. (History of Education)

The British state and the natural environment : with special reference to the Alkali Inspectorate, circa 1860-1906

Garwood, Christine January 1998 (has links)
The central intention of this thesis is to analyse a body of Victorian legislation, which was enacted to control atmospheric pollution by the chemical industry. Its concern is predominately with enforcement, and the principal aim is to assess the role and effectiveness of the British State and its agencies in this respect. The major focus is a somewhat neglected body of legislation - the Alkali Acts of 1863-1906. These initiated the State regulation of noxious emissions from the early heavy chemical (alkali) industry, and set up a central government body, the Alkali Inspectorate, to this end. The major focus is the ability of Victorian institutions to formulate and implement environmental reforms, especially those which necessitated the increased control of industrial behaviour. It will explore the enforcement and decision making processes, assessing how priorities were set and whose interests were served. Furthermore, it examines the influence of economic, legislative, social, ideological and political factors upon inspection and prosecution. This study also assess whether the control of industrial atmospheric pollution was the consequence of a Victorian regulationist fervour or an example of utilitarian concern with environmental degradation. The main body of the thesis is constituted by chapters on biography, the fiscal context and enforcement. These themes are drawn together by an assessment of the extent and effect of various constraints upon the Alkali Inspectorate. Throughout, some vital comparisons and contrasts with the inspectorates of factories and mines are made, in order to gauge State support for the Alkali Inspectorate. This assessment of the effectiveness of the Alkali Inspectorate and the legislation which created it, facilitates broader insights into the relationship between the State and industry and the extent of State intervention in nineteenth-century Britain

Agents of change : Enlightened, HBO and the crisis of brand identity in the post-network era

Swords, Collins David 10 October 2014 (has links)
As a result of changing cultural, economic and technological factors, television always exists in a perpetual state of transformation. The fragmentation of the mass audience and the disintegration of the network oligarchy catalyzed the emergence of a multi-channel universe and niche cable markets in the post-network era. HBO, perhaps the most successful premium cable channel to emerge during the changing TV landscape, implemented a subscription-service economic model, enabling it to produce uncensored, commercial free content unavailable on broadcast television. HBO has since been labeled as the leading purveyors of quality, auteurist-centered TV. For this report, I analyze how HBO has been constructed in the realm of academic discourse. Using Enlightened and showrunner Mike White as a case study, I examine how the series conforms to and deviates from HBO's established brand and reflects the network's struggle to redefine itself in the post-network era. Ultimately, I aim to reveal the mythologized, idealized and manufactured culture of production at HBO and examine how journalistic discourse surrounding the series presents the HBO brand identity in a state of crisis and transition. / text
