EMONAS : Evolutionary Multi-objective Neuron Architecture Search of Deep Neural Network / EMONAS : Evolutionär multi-objektiv neuronarkitektursökning av djupa neurala nätverk för inbyggda system

Feng, Jiayi January 2023 (has links)
Customized Deep Neural Network (DNN) accelerators have been increasingly popular in various applications, from autonomous driving and natural language processing to healthcare and finance, etc. However, deploying them directly on embedded system peripherals within real-time operating systems (RTOS) is not easy due to the paradox of the complexity of DNNs and the simplicity of embedded system devices. As a result, DNN implementation on embedded system devices requires customized accelerators with tailored hardware due to their numerous computations, latency, power consumption, etc. Moreover, the computational capacity, provided by potent microprocessors or graphics processing units (GPUs), is necessary to unleash the full potential of DNN, but these computational resources are often not easily available in embedded system devices. In this thesis, we propose an innovative method to evaluate and improve the efficiency of DNN implementation within the constraints of resourcelimited embedded system devices. The Evolutionary Multi-Objective Neuron Architecture Search-Binary One Optimization (EMONAS-BOO) optimizes both the image classification accuracy and the innovative Binary One Optimization (BOO) objectives, with Multiple Objective Optimization (MOO) methods. The EMONAS-BOO automates neural network searching and training, and the neural network architectures’ diversity is also guaranteed with the help of an evolutionary algorithm that consists of tournament selection, polynomial mutation, and point crossover mechanisms. Binary One Optimization (BOO) is used to evaluate the difficulty in implementing DNNs on resource-limited embedded system peripherals, employing a binary format for DNN weights. A deeper implementation of the innovative Binary One Optimization will significantly boost not only computation efficiency but also memory storage, power dissipation, etc. It is based on the reduction of weights binary 1’s that need to be computed and stored, where the reduction of binary 1 brings reduced arithmetic operations and thus simplified neural network structures. In addition, analyzed from a digital circuit waveform perspective, the embedded system, in interpreting the neural network, will register an increase in zero weights leading to a reduction in voltage transition frequency, which, in turn, benefits power efficiency improvement. The proposed EMONAS employs the MOO method which optimizes two objectives. The first objective is image classification accuracy, and the second objective is Binary One Optimization (BOO). This approach enables EMONAS to outperform manually constructed and randomly searched DNNs. Notably, 12 out of 100 distinct DNNs maintained their image classification accuracy. At the same time, they also exhibit superior BOO performance. Additionally, the proposed EMONAS ensures automated searching and training of DNNs. It achieved significant reductions in key performance metrics: Compared with random search, evolutionary-searched BOO was lowered by up to 85.1%, parameter size by 85.3%, and FLOPs by 83.3%. These improvements were accomplished without sacrificing the image classification accuracy, which saw an increase of 8.0%. These results demonstrate that the EMONAS is an excellent choice for optimizing innovative objects that did not exist before, and greater multi-objective optimization performance can be guaranteed simultaneously if computational resources are adequate.

The effect of eicosapentaenoic acid on brain and platelet produced bioactive lipid mediators : the effect of eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid and other polyunsaturated fatty acids on the eicosanoids and endocannabinoids produced by rat brain and human platelets using electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry-based analysis

Mir, Adnan Ahmed January 2009 (has links)
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with neuroprotective and cardioprotective properties. It is thought that some of the actions of EPA may be attributed to its elongated metabolite, the PUFA docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA) are bioactive PUFA ubiquitously expressed in neural tissues. EPA and AA can be converted by cyclooxygenase (COX) to prostanoids and by lipoxygenase (LOX) to hydroxy fatty acids. PUFA can also be converted to ethanolamides in the brain. These mediators are involved in physiological and pathological processes in many bodily systems. The purpose of this study was to examine the production of eicosanoids, hydroxy fatty acids and fatty acid ethanolamides in young and aged rat brain following EPA or DPA enriched diets. The effects of specific PUFA on human platelet eicosanoid production were also investigated as these mediators play a role in adhesion and aggregation. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) assays were developed and used to measure lipid mediators in rat brain and human platelets. Ageing in rat brain was accompanied with several changes in the prostanoid and hydroxy fatty acid profiles. Supplementing the diet with EPA or DPA at a daily dose of 200 mg/kg for 8 weeks prevented these changes and decreased levels of PGE2. DPA changed the profile of hydroxy fatty acids synthesised in the brain tissue of young animals. This study has shown that levels of eicosapentaenoylethanolamide (EPA-EA) increase in the brain as a result of ageing and that this is accompanied by an increase in levels of anandamide. Feeding aged animals EPA or DPA further increased the levels of EPA-EA but prevented any change in the level of anandamide. Niacin is used to treat hypercholesterolaemia although it is associated with an unpleasant PGD2 mediated skin flush. This exploratory study has shown that human platelets treated with niacin did not show any changes in their prostanoid and hydroxy fatty acid profiles. Platelets treated with EPA showed increased production of TXB3 and 12-HEPE. Niacin augmented the effects of EPA on human platelet mediator synthesis. Overall, this study has demonstrated that EPA can change brain and platelet lipid mediator synthesis and has provided evidence that could explain some of the neuroprotective and cardioprotective actions of this PUFA.

STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT IN A COUNTRY OF TRANSITION:

Iryna, Usava January 2005 (has links)
Abstract SEA is currently becoming an important tool for sustainable development. The main principles of SEA are to incorporate environmental considerations to the process of development of strategic documents and to make the process of the decision-making more transparent. Over the past years, there have been an increasing number of countries especially transitional and developing countries such as Belarus that consider joining the international conventions for SEA such as EU Directive 2001/42/EC (the SEA Directive) and UNECE SEA Protocol. This research focuses on the capacity assessment for SEA implementation in Belarus. The benchmarks for SEA capacity assessment were defined. For identifying the approaches for SEA implementation in the countries in transition, the experience of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe was analyzed. The capacity assessment for Belarus was made involved three levels, namely, system level, as well as organizational and individual levels. The paper analyses strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for SEA implementation in Belarus. The study concludes with some suggestions that might help to improve capacity for SEA implementation.

The Cinematisation of Computer and Console Games : Aesthetic and Commercial Convergence in the Film and Game Industries

Majek, Dee January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the growing trend of cinematisation in computer and console games, where both visual styles and industrial practices are concerned. The ever-increasing runtime of cinematic cutscenes in games, and the stylization of game graphics in accordance with established film genres are of primary focus regarding the gaming industry's absorption and interpretation of cinematic visuals. Comparisons of film-game convergence are based on the proliferation of non-gameplay promotional trailers and their role in hype-generation; as well as game producer strategies of franchising, cross-promotion, and initial-sales business model. Comparison is thus accomplished with regards to a number of fundamental similarities in both industries' business and commercial tactics, as stemming from the risk and reward-based investment financing system prevalent in both industries. Finally, a selection of user and industry professional video responses to the aforementioned trends are examined, both for their value in counter-balancing the assumptions of success which often follow staggeringly high initial sales figures; and for their value in layering the depth of film-game convergence even further, as they respond to the recent, filmic trends in games using the very language of film.

Tissue-resident memory T cells in eczema : contribution and protective regulatory mechanisms / Lymphocytes T mémoires résidants dans l’eczéma : contribution et mécanismes de régulation

Gamradt, Pia 20 December 2017 (has links)
Eczemas are the prototype of skin delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions. Skin lesions are induced by the recruitment and activation in the skin of effector/memory T cells specific for environmental antigens that are innocuous to healthy non-allergic individuals. The aim of this work was to better understand the pathophysiology of eczemas by a comprehensive analysis of the contribution of skin resident memory T cells (Trm) to the chronicity and severity of these diseases.Capitalizing on relevant preclinical eczema models and on clinical samples collected from allergic patients, this work showed that: (i) numerous allergen-specific CD8+Trm colonize the eczema lesion, (ii) they accumulate in the epidermis in response to the long-term persistence of the allergen in the skin, (iii) they are instrumental for the recurrence of eczema, but (iv) theyexpress several inhibitory check point receptors (ICRs, such as PD-1, TIM-3) at their surface, which keep them in check to prevent the development of severe immunopathology. Thus, our work provides important information for considering the unique nature of hapteninduced CD8+ Trm and the mechanisms that prevent their unwanted reactivation and subsequent development of chronic or severe skin allergy. The development of therapeutic strategies targeting the reactivation of skin Trm in situ via their ICRs should open new avenues to restore tolerance in allergic individuals

The Role of Enterprise Architecture in Local eGovernment Adoption

Ask, Andreas January 2012 (has links)
Governments struggle with inefficiencies and an inability to achieve interoperable information communication technology (ICT) systems. Apparent issues include a failure of local government to realize the benefits of electronic government (eGov) initiatives, high project failure rates, administrations hampered with inefficiencies, and a lack of interoperability between systems within the local government. Thus, local governments need to address their eGov initiatives in a structured way to improve their chances of providing the benefits that are sought after. Sweden’s eGov model is decentralized, following a strict new public management (NPM) model. Whilst eGov ought to bring benefits to local government, Sweden is still hampered by inefficiencies and an inability to achieve interoperable ICT systems. This has been the case for quite some time. One reason why systemic gains from adopting eGov have not reached the levels sought after could be that, in many cases, ICT implementations are not enough. The transformation needed for eGov is not instantaneous; it requires various new ways of working. Enterprise Architecture (EA) has come to be seen as a possible solution to the apparent issues of developing, adopting and managing eGov successfully. By utilizing EA, it is argued that it is possible to bridge ICT systems and business processes, thus making the organization more efficient. However EA’s usefulness for eGov development and adoption is the subject of debate. Some researchers argue that EA lacks clearly defined scopes and concepts, which makes the use of EA in government difficult. Whereas other argues that although EA frameworks are comprehensive logical frameworks, they lack content that is related specifically to government organizations. The thesis posits the following research questions: What is the role of EA in eGov adoption in Swedish local government? together with three sub questions: What are the prerequisites for using EA in Swedish local eGov adoption? What has the Swedish local government in Örebro achieved with its use of EA in eGov adoption? And What problems have the Swedish local government in Örebro experienced in its use of EA when adopting eGov? To explore the role of EA in eGov adoption a longitudinal case study is carried out on the municipality of Örebro’s eGov project MovIT, a project launched in 2007 that ended in 2009. I study the prerequisites, results and problems associated with using EA in Swedish local government as part of eGov adoption. A comparative study is conducted of the goals of eGov, as stated in official eGov documents at EU and Swedish governmental levels will attest as to the supposed benefits of EA in contemporary EA-literature. From the study, it can be concluded that EA, as a phenomenon, is thought to be, if not a silverbullet, then at least a prerequisite to eGov success. In term of prerequisites, EA use cannot assist Swedish local government where there are more politicized objectives; in this situation, local government is required to look elsewhere to find support for its work. The study identify several critical issues from the empirical study of the prerequisites: distinction between administrative and political responsibilities; political mandate; political timing; resource allocation; coordination under NPM; dependence on providers; and choosing among standards and best practices. These issues need to be acknowledged and handled appropriately by Swedish local government in order to improve the chances for success in eGov adoption. The study also showed that NPM as governance model becomes a hindrance in eGov adoption, preventing the project from a more explicit use of an EA-framework and negatively affecting the projects possibility to adopt eGov. However, despite this structural problem, it is still possible – as observed – for a project that is based on EA-thinking to begin working. EGov, NPM and EA-thinking form a triad, with structural properties that, in some instances, correlate. In such cases, this can lead to positive changes. However, in other situations, they are contradictory, resulting in Swedish local government having a difficult time in adhering to the suggestions endorsed by the eGov project. This lead to incoherent progressions towards requested results. The existing structures hindered effective cooperation, both internally between different departments and externally with other local governments. This licentiate thesis has shown that the initial use of EA in local government eGov adoption is complex. Given the contradictory nature of NPM and eGov, local government has to acknowledge the negative impacts of NPM on eGov adoption. As well as acknowledging the issues that arise from EA use, a key area is a lack of support of local government in an area that is most likely to be endorsed by politicians. Politicians do not get re-elected based on efficient internal processes with a highly integrated ICT; rather, changes must be visible to citizens and businesses. This licentiate thesis has also shown that ‘EA-thinking’, as a means for local government, can move towards an EA without the explicit use of an EA framework or EA method. However, ‘EA-thinking’ may give rise to other issues that need to be acknowledged and dealt with. This licentiate thesis contributes to research by improving our understanding of the nature and importance of promoting and inhibiting different factors. Including critical issues for succeeding with eGov adoption, the negative effects of NPM and how EA-thinking can lead to positive changes, even though it cannot assist local government in all aspects deemed important to eGov adoption. In terms of practice, this thesis contributes by highlighting the problematic nature of institutionalized structures and the effect that this has on eGov adoption. It also contributes by enabling local governments to acknowledge the problems identified. This allows them to better understand their own development and possibly avoid similar problems or at least have a better understanding of how to handle the issues that arise.

The inflected genitive and the of-construction : A comparative corpus study of written East African, Indian, American and British English

Boberg, Per January 2007 (has links)
This quantitative corpus study discusses and compares the distribution of the inflected genitive (’s- or zero-genitive) with that of the of-construction in East African, Indian, American and British English using data collected from the ICE-EA, ICE-IND, Frown and FLOB corpora. This study also discusses the semantic categories of the inflected genitive in the varieties mentioned. The first conclusion of the study is that the distribution of tokens according to semantic categories is similar in all varieties examined. Furthermore, it is concluded for the modifier classes that animateness-biased classes are more common with the inflected genitive, while inanimateness-biased classes are more common with the of-construction; this distribution is similar in all varieties.

"Ci sono così pochi buoni amici..." Il carteggio tra Mary McCarthy e Nicola Chiaromonte (1946 - 1971) / 'THERE ARE SO FEW TRUE FRIENDS...' IL CARTEGGIO TRA MARY McCARTHY E NICOLA CHIAROMONTE / "There are so few true friends" The correspondence between Mary McCarthy and Nicola Chiaromonte (1946 - 1971)

SAVOLDI, ALESSANDRA 21 February 2020 (has links)
The dissertation deals with the correspondence between the writer, literary critic and American political activist Mary McCarthy and the Italian essayist and theater critic Nicola Chiaromonte: an epistolary exchange, their, still unpublished despite the growing number of publications concerning the two authors. The correspondence maintained with close friends is to be considered a fundamental element to shed light on the most intimate aspects of Mary McCarthy's life and artistic creation: in particular, this correspondence reveals the author's more human and personal side (rarely shown in public) and the devotion and respect he felt towards the one he considered as her mentor, critic and friend. The same feelings are reflected in the words of Nicola Chiaromonte, so austere and measured in his work as playful and passionate with his closest friends. The thesis consists of two main parts. The brief general introduction is followed by a first part of historical-narrative nature, in which the biographies of Mary McCarthy and Nicola Chiaromonte alternate up to the fundamental moment of their meeting, starting from which their experiences are intertwined in the events who saw them involved. The second part of the thesis is instead the actual correspondence: 115 among letters, telegrams and tickets, supplied with critical notes in order to allow a better understanding.
