A RIP IN THE SOCIAL FABRIC: REVOLUTION, INDUSTRIAL WORKERS OF THE WORLD, AND THE PATERSON SILK STRIKE OF 1913 IN AMERICAN LITERATURE, 1908-1927

Peterson, Nicholas L. January 2011 (has links)
In 1913, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) led a strike of silk workers in Paterson, New Jersey. Several New York intellectuals took advantage of Paterson's proximity to New York to witness and participate in the strike, eventually organizing the Paterson Pageant as a fundraiser to support the strikers. Directed by John Reed, the strikers told their own story in the dramatic form of the Pageant. The IWW and the Paterson Silk Strike inspired several writers to relate their experience of the strike and their participation in the Pageant in fictional works. Since labor and working-class experience is rarely a literary subject, the assertiveness of workers during a strike is portrayed as a catastrophic event that is difficult for middle-class writers to describe. The IWW's goal was a revolutionary restructuring of society into a worker-run co-operative and the strike was its chief weapon in achieving this end. Inspired by such a drastic challenge to the social order, writers use traditional social organizations--religion, nationality, and family--to structure their characters' or narrators' experience of the strike; but the strike also forces characters and narrators to re-examine these traditional institutions in regard to the class struggle. / English

The Eastman Kodak Co. and the Canadian Kodak Co. Ltd : re-structuring the Canadian photographic industry, c.1885-1910

Perry, Shannon January 2016 (has links)
Within the accepted historiography of photography, the importance of George Eastman and the Eastman Kodak Company (EKC) has become unassailable. They have been placed as the key, and often sole, agent in “revolutionizing” the amateur photography market in the late nineteenth century. While the photographic landscape and market of 1885-1914 was indeed radically altered, the historiographical dominance of what can be identified as the “Kodak story” has obscured the means through which EKC’s successful re-structuring of the existing manufacturing and distribution networks of photographic materials occurred. I argue that the changes effected by Eastman and the EKC began not with imaging desires, but with their acknowledgment, and profound understanding of the existing and competing interests within the photographic industry. This thesis focuses on the EKC’s re-structuring of the extant and evolving communities involved in the manufacturing and distribution of photographic materials in Canada between 1885-1910. Focusing particularly on the period immediately surrounding the establishment of the Canadian Kodak Co. Limited in 1899, I demonstrate the re-structuring processes at work, including: market and financial diversification; governmental lobbying; purchase and mergers; and other business and marketing-based strategies. I frame my theoretical positions and analysis of network re-structuring through the experiences of Ottawa professional photographer and photographic business owner William James Topley (active 1868-1907), and CKCoLtd manager John Garrison Palmer (active 1886-1921). Topley and Garrison’s professional experiences and interactions with expanded communities of photographic consumers and industry participants provide an opportunity for specific and detailed findings which challenge understandings of the evolution of the practice of photography during this transitional period. In doing so, I provide evidence of the primary role network re-structuring played in the EKC’s ability to shape the wider international photographic industry to their advantage in the early twentieth century.

Two Partnership Stories in Northeast Tennessee- 2015 HCS-ETSU MSP and Outcomes of Eastman Scholars MathElites

Tai, Chih-Che, Keith, Karin, Nivens, Ryan Andrew 29 May 2015 (has links)
This presentation tells the story of two partnerships co-initiated by the ETSU Center of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education. The first partnership, Eastman Scholar MathElites, demonstrates how a 7+ year partnership between business and an institute of higher education (Eastman-ETSU) has brought a regional impact in Grades 3-8 math. The second partnership, G6-12 Science and Literacy project, introduces how a local education agency and institute of higher education (Hawkins County Schools-ETSU) have worked together to provide teacher professional development (PD) that focuses on Grades 6-12 English Language Arts and Science. This PD seeks to build confidence and understanding about using reading as a tool to understand STEM literacies. These two programs do not only benefit K-12 education in the Northeast Tennessee region, but also bring practical implications for future development in state-wide and national issues.

The expousal, examination through experience, and renunciation of communism by Emma Goldman, Benjamin Gitlow, Max Eastman and Louis Budenz

Bitts, Clarence A. 01 January 1952 (has links) (PDF)
The objective of this thesis is to present a study of the political impact of Communism on four individuals who at one stage in their lives thought that Communism was the best political system on earth, and who subsequently became disillusioned ot the point where they considered Communism the worst political system on earth. This thesis tries to answer some of the questions arising from such a study. How did these four people become so enamoured of Communism and later so thoroughly disillusioned with it? What is there about Communism which could so strongly attract and later so thoroughly repel intelligent people? Was disaffection due to the weakness of the people involved, or was it due to weaknesses in the Communist system? Where is the truth to be found regarding the essential nature of Communism: in the official reports and propaganda of the Russian government, or in the opinions of the Communist Party members, or in the writings of those who have been in close contact with the system? The problem is to determine the nature of the attraction of Communism and the nature of its repellent aspects as seen by four of those who have strongly felt, in turn, that attraction and that repulsion.

Patrícia Luise Scabell Evans 04 November 2011 (has links)
Results for IB showed statistically significant differences as: GI>GIII (p=0.0002); GI-c>GI-a (p=0.042). Males showed higher frequency of IB (3.6%+1.7) than females (0.8%+0,5), p<0.01. In conclusion: Data of the 2 populations of athletes showed that there is a great variance on the oral health among the evaluated individuals. Several conditions that might have a potencial influence on the performance of the athletes were detected with the aid of digital panoramic radiographs, and this suggests that an oral health program should be included as part of the preparation of those individuals. The evaluation of the frequency and distribution of interdental gingival bleeding in a population of athletes that participated in the III Parapan-American Games, revealed that the kind of physical impairment is a factor that influences the gingival health of these individuals. The planning of an oral health program for this population should be adapted to the different limitations of each athlete.

[pt] ESTUDO DE TÉCNICAS DE APRENDIZADO POR REFORÇO APLICADAS AO CONTROLE DE PROCESSOS QUÍMICOS / [en] STUDY OF REINFORCEMENT LEARNING TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO THE CONTROL OF CHEMICAL PROCESSES

30 December 2021 (has links)
[en] Industry 4.0 boosted the development of new technologies to meet current market demands. One of these new technologies was the incorporation of computational intelligence techniques into the daily life of the chemical industry. In this context, this present work evaluated the performance of controllers based on reinforcement learning in industrial chemical processes. The control strategy directly affects the safety and cost of the process. The better the performance of this strategy, the lower will be the production of effluents and the consumption of input and energy. The reinforcement learning algorithms showed excellent results for the first case study, the Van de Vusse s reactor. However, to implement these algorithms in the Tennessee Eastman Process chemical plant it was shown that more studies are needed. The weak Markov property, the high dimensionality and peculiarities of the plant were factors that made it difficult for the developed controllers to obtain satisfactory results. For case study 1, the algorithms Q-Learning, Actor Critic TD, DQL, DDPG, SAC and TD3 were evaluated, and for case study 2 the algorithms CMA-ES, TRPO, PPO, DDPG, SAC and TD3 were evaluated.

Effets thermoélectriques dans des liquides complexes : liquides ioniques et ferrofluides / Thermoelectric effects in complex liquids : ionic liquids and ferrofluids

Salez, Thomas 10 November 2017 (has links)
Complex liquids are promising material for low cost and wide scale conversion of thermal energy to electric energy, within a context of global warming and control of the energy consumption. In this work we showed that with a redox couple, ionic liquid (EAN and EMIMTFSI) based thermogalvanic cells present remarkable thermoelectric properties such as the Seebeck coefficient over 5 mV/K (Eu³⁺/Eu²⁺ in EMIMTFSI). Moreover, we demonstrated for the first time that ferrofluids, colloidal solutions (aqueous or organic solvent based) of magnetic nanoparticles (maghemite), can be used to increase both the Seebeck coefficient and the electric current in liquid thermoelectric generators through unknown physical processes. The importance of reversible adsorption phenomena of the nanoparticles on the electrodes’ surface for the thermoelectric properties of these solutions was revealed. That can be further modified by a homogeneous magnetic field applied perpendicular or parallel to the temperature gradient. Without a redox couple, ionic liquids can be used to build thermally chargeable supercapacitors. They take advantage of temperature dependent electrical double-layer formation at liquid/electrode interfaces. Here, we studied these double-layer modifications in EMIMBF4/platinum through Monte-Carlo simulations. The results show substantial modifications in the thermoelectric properties when the ionic liquid is diluted in an organic solvent, acetonitrile. These results are qualitatively consistent with experimental measurements.
