A Quantitative Analysis of an Eating Disorder Prevention Program

Doyle, Rachel Gayle 24 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a preventative curriculum entitled Eating Disorders: Physical, Social, and Emotional Consequences, A High School Curriculum about Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive Eating (EDPSEC), a preventative curriculum for eating disorders. Participants included an experimental group of 72 students enrolled in a ninth grade health class and a control group of 39 ninth grade students enrolled in a physical education class. The research examined the administration integrity of the curriculum and participating students' change in eating attitudes and behaviors according to group membership. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the Eating Survey (ES) were utilized in a pre-post test design to determine the participants' change. There was a high correlation between the students' scores on the ES and the EAT-26 (r = .873). Results indicated low treatment integrity and no significant change on students' EAT-26 or ES scores according to group. However due to low treatment integrity this study was unable to determine the effectiveness of this EDPSEC curriculum. There was a high correlation between the students' scores on the ES and the EAT-26 (r = .873).

The Relationship Between Religious Orientation, Age, and Eating Disorder Symptoms

Susov, Sara L. 20 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Eating disorders are public health problems that are becoming increasingly prevalent in the United States. Research has shown that the etiology of eating disorders is multifaceted, and includes physical, socioemotional, and generic risk factors. One area that predicts eating disorder behaviors is religious orientation; however, the literature on the relationship between eating disorder symptomology and religious orientation has been mixed. Religious orientation is defined as reason for engaging in religious practice. People who have an intrinsic religious orientation live their religion instead of using their religion, and people with an extrinsic religious orientation use their religion to help them achieve their goals instead of living their religion. To help fill this deficit, this study looked at the relationship between religious orientation (extrinsic vs. intrinsic), age, and eating disorder symptomology. Participants for this study included 213 adult women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attending a large western university. This study found a positive correlation between bulimic symptomology and an extrinsic religious orientation. No correlation was shown for age or intrinsic religious orientation, and age did not mediate eating disorder symptomology. No correlation was shown for oral control or dieting among participants. These findings can be used to inform therapists of the relationship between bulimic symptomology and an extrinsic religious orientation, and may inform interventions chosen in treatment for individuals with bulimia nervosa, particularly among Latter-day Saint women.

Cost-Effectiveness of Outpatient Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified

Horton, Dwayne M. 12 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This study examined the cost effectiveness of treating Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (NOS), as well as the effects that modality of therapy (i.e. individual, family, and mixed therapy), license of therapist, and secondary diagnosis had on recidivism and total cost of treatment in the care of these patients. One-thousand and thirty-eight patients (56 males, 982 females) diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa, 1,674 patients (56 males, 1,618 females) diagnosed with Bulimia Nervosa, and 1,997 patients (197 males, 1,800 females) diagnosed with Eating Disorder NOS were included in this study. Results revealed that family therapy was the least expensive form of therapy in average total cost of therapy. Individuals who had family therapy were 3.3 times less likely to recidivate than those who had individual therapy and 7.5 times less likely to recidivate than those who had mixed therapy. Having a secondary diagnosis on average increased the total cost of treatment by $437.34, irrespective of the type of secondary diagnosis (i.e. depression, anxiety, or substance-abuse). These findings suggest that modality of therapy should be considered in the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Eating Disorder NOS. Future research should examine the effects of treatment for individuals with a secondary diagnosis.

Föräldrars upplevelser av att leva med ett barn som diagnostiserats med en ätstörning : en litteraturöversikt / Parents' experiences of living with a child diagnosed with an eating disorder : a literature review

Färnman, Rosanna, Flack, Camilla January 2022 (has links)
Background Eating disorders are potentially life-threatening mental illnesses that affect more and more young people. It is not only healthcare professionals who need to support those affected, since parents of children with an eating disorder have a crucial role to play in their recovery. Eating disorders can signify years of suffering for both children and their parents. There is limited research on parents' experiences and mental well-being in connection with their child’s care. For healthcare professionals to be able to respond to these parents, increased understanding and knowledge of their experiences is needed. Purpose The purpose was to shed light on parents' experiences of living with a child diagnosed with an eating disorder. Method A non-systematic literature review was conducted where 15 scientific articles were searched in the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The articles, which constituted the result, were quality reviewed and then analysed through an integrated data analysis. Results The results showed that eating disorders led to strained family relationships, conflicts over meals, and affected families socially, emotionally, psychologically, and financially. The parents experienced frustration over not being able to do enough, feelings of guilt, shame, anxiety, and loneliness. A knowledge gap was demonstrated among healthcare professionals regarding eating disorders and family treatment. Parents experienced an increased burden of having to coordinate care on their own. Meeting other parents in a similar situation and being involved in the care of the sick child proved to alleviate feelings of guilt and increased the understanding of eating disorders.  Conclusion Parents of children with eating disorders undergo a great deal of emotional strain. For healthcare professionals to be able to respond to relatives in a supportive and meaningful way, there is a need for further training in mental illness and eating disorders, as well as coordination of care to make it easier for parents to seek professional help. Participating in treatments proved to have a good impact on parents' mental well-being and contributed to an increased understanding of their children's illness.

Vuxna personers upplevelser av att leva med ätstörning : En litteraturöversikt / Adults' experiences of living with an eating disorder : A literature review

Andersson, Jill, Ask, Ida January 2023 (has links)
Background: Eating disorders are a mental illness that mainly affects young people but also adults. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the most common types of eating disorders, with anorexia having the highest risk of mortality. Eating disorder is a mental illness with visible physical symptoms that are easily focused on. The focus must be on the person and not just on weight and body. Aim: The aim was to explore adults' experience of living with an eating disorder. Method: The method used was a literature review where ten qualitative articles were selected and compiled into a new result according to five steps. The articles were retrieved from the databases Cinahl and PubMed. Findings: Eating disorder is a disease that puts life out of balance. It affects family and relationships as much as the person affected. The disease creates a mixture of emotions such as shame, anxiety and pride. Professional services are experienced both positively and negatively by those affected. A good treatment and confirmation of their feelings is important for their recovery. Conclusion: There are preconceived notions about what age it is acceptable to suffer from an eating disorder. Adults are often judged for their illness and are treated differently compared to young people. Here it becomes the nurse´s responsibility to treat the patient without prejudice.

Föräldrars upplevelser av ett barn med ätstörning : En litteraturöversikt / Parent's experience of a child with an eating disorder : A literature review

Lindman, Camilla, Åström, Mikaëla January 2022 (has links)
Background: Eating disorders not only affect the individual but also affect the family, the environment and society at large. Parental involvement is a significant part of recovery. Nurses need to take responsibility for promoting parents' health as well. Through in-depth knowledge of the parental situation, the nurse can provide better care and conditions for the parents' participation in the care of their children with eating disorders. Aim: The purpose of the literature review was to describe the experience of being a parent of a child with an eating disorder. Method: The method used is a literature review where the results have been compiled with the help of ten scientific articles. Results: The results are presented in three main themes: Information about the disease, lack of support and parents' experience of exclusion. Summary: The need for support from the care and to be able to participate in the care is of great importance for the parents to be able to continue to support their child. It is strenuous to be the parent of a child with an eating disorder and it can restrict both physical and mental health as well as quality of life.

Executive Functions of Adults with Binge-Eating Disorder: The Role of Weight Status and Psychopathology

Busch, Nele, Schmidt, Ricarda, Hilbert, Anja 02 May 2023 (has links)
Findings on executive functions (EFs) in binge-eating disorder (BED) are inconsistent and possibly biased by associated comorbidities. This study aimed to identify whether distinct levels of physical and mental comorbidity are related to EFs in BED. General and food-specific EFs in n = 77 adults with BED were compared to population-based norms and associations with weight status, depressive symptoms, and eating disorder psychopathology were analyzed. To detect within-sample patterns of EF performance, k-means clustering was applied. The results indicated that participants’ general EFs were within the average range with slight deficits in alertness. While depression and eating disorder psychopathology were unrelated to EFs, weight status was associated with food-specific attentional bias that was significantly higher in obesity class 2 than in overweight/obesity class 1 and obesity class 3. Four meaningful clusters with distinct strengths and impairments in general and food-specific EFs but without differences in clinical variables were identified. Altogether, adults with BED showed few specific deficits compared to normative data. Performance was unrelated to depression and eating disorder psychopathology, while weight status was associated with food-specific EFs only. The results highlight the need for longitudinal studies to evaluate the relevance of EFs in BED development and maintenance in neurologically healthy adults.
