Young Adults' Perceptions of High School Graduation Success and Long-Term Juvenile Incarceration

Garwood, Simone Patricia 01 January 2015 (has links)
Officials in the juvenile and public education systems are working to address the education gap for incarcerated juveniles and to implement turning point programs. The purpose of the phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of previously incarcerated young adults and their perceptions of graduation success and long-term juvenile incarceration. Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory, Ryan and Deci's self-determination theory, Merton and Agnew's general strain theory, Homan's theory of exchange, and life course theory informed this study. Research questions were developed to understand the experiences and perceptions of young adults related to graduation success during or after juvenile incarceration. Convenience, purposive, and snowball sampling techniques were used to identify 10 young adults who experienced juvenile incarceration and completed high school with a high school diploma or GED. In-depth interviews were conducted to understand the participants' lived experiences and how they were able to overcome their challenges and succeed academically. A combination of a priori and open coding was used to support inductive analysis. Eight themes were identified: challenges of incarceration, support systems, overcoming patterns, turning points, juvenile justice staff, advice to other young offenders, experiences of incarceration, and graduation success. Recommendations include enhanced training for staff members in schools and facilities and conducting a follow-up study to assess the continued success of young adults in this study. Positive social change contributions include identifying ways incarcerated juveniles can be reengaged in schooling and continuing education to decrease recidivism and enhance productive citizenship.

Educating the Dietitian on Nutritional Counseling Principles in Diabetes Mellitus and their Application for Adolescents with Insulin-Dependent Diabetes: Use of a Learning Package

DeLeeuw, Eileen R. 01 May 1981 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop and test a Learning Package on nutritional counseling principles in diabetes mellitus with specific application for adolescents with insulin-dependent diabetes. The Learning Package was designed to be used as continuing education material for the clinical dietitian. It consisted of two audio tapes, 2 1/2 hours in length, recorded by the author and an accompanying handbook or resourcebook. The resourcebook materials were designed to give further details, provide resources and materials for future reference, visually reinforce the audio presentation, summarize information given in the presentation, and give a bibliography of the references cited. The presentation was divided into four sections: Guidelines for Education of Individuals with Diabetes Mellitus; Educational Program Planning in a Health Care Agency; The Adolescent with Insulin-Dependent Diabetes; The Educator-Client Interaction. Following initial formative evaluations, the Learning Package was field tested in a seminar for practicing clinical dietitians held in three locations with several subjects completing the test in the home setting. Pre and posttest scores and attitudes of the participants towards the Guidelines and Learning Package were collected and are reported. Suggestions for improvement of the Learning Package and demographic data were also collected and are reported. Only 13.8% of the subjects met the 90% criterion as determined on the posttest. There was improvement from both forms of the pretests to the posttest. Tests of statistical significance were not conducted. Participants indicated acceptance of the Learning Package as a continuing education tool and of the Guidelines as of practical value to them in their practices. Recommendations are made for improvement and revision of the Learning Package and final (summative) evaluation and testing before packaging and distribution by the American Dietetic Association. It is concluded that the Learning Package is acceptable to practitioners and, with the suggested revisions, can meet the continuing education needs of dietitians to improve nutritional education of persons with diabetes, as identified in the literature.

The Effects Of A Parent Training On Different Dimensions Of Parent Adolescent Relationships

Ozeke Kocabas, Ezgi 01 April 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the study was twofold, first to create an example of a parent training for parents of adolescents and second to explore the effects of a parent training on different dimensions of parent-adolescent relationships and communication skills of parents of adolescents. The participants of this study were the parents of 9th and 10th grade adolescents from two different lycees in Ankara / METU Foundation School and Deneme Lycee. 10 volunteer parents (mothers or fathers) from METU Foundation School and 11 parents from Deneme Lycee participated in that study as the members of the experimental group. In this study, an experimental design with treatment and control groups and 3 measurements (pre, post and follow up) was used. The 5-session training for parents generally consisted of activities aimed at developing their communication skills and their relationships with their children. The program mainly focused on social skills for parents to develop better communication and improve the satisfaction of parents and also to help parents improve their parenting skills. Data were collected through qualitative and quantitative methods. In order to assess the effects of training on parents, instruments called Parent Success Indicator and Communication Skills Evaluation Scale were used in the study. Moreover, an openended evaluation form was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. In order to explore the differences between experimental and control groups, two way repeated measures of analysis of variance was used. The results revealed no significant differences between groups, however, the qualitative findings indicated that the parent training in this study helped parents to develop positive interaction with their children.

Education for sustainable living: exploring the landscape of one urban high school’s sustainability practices and values

Eckton, Heather Murphy 14 January 2016 (has links)
Education for Sustainable Living (ESL) requires a whole-system pedagogical shift that changes the discourse from a positivistic worldview into one founded on ecological principles. The emerging environmental and sociopolitical challenges of the 21st century are complex, and schools present an important platform embracing sustainable changes. This participatory action research surveyed staff attitudes and student values from one Manitoban urban high school, to better understand the school culture of sustainability. In addition, a school wide Equity Conference was profiled for contributions to ESL through student exit slips; and a focus group with teachers where survey data was discussed also became part of the data corpus. The intent of this research was to understand on a deeper level how sustainability projects and initiatives are related to a culture of sustainability school wide. From these findings, recommendations to improve a whole-school approach to sustainability are provided. / February 2016

This research aims to know and understand the concepts and practices narrated on the care / education by the teachers of Rio Branco / AC crèche de and brings the central question: What concepts and practices on the care / education are narrated by the teachers? The qualitative research approach is anchored in studies Biklem and Bogdan (1994), with the option, the case study, based on André (1986, 2005). Data collection occurred through semi-structured interviews and observations of moments of the practice of the four surveyed teachers. The theoretical framework brings in conceptions of childhood: Kulhman (2012), Aries (2006), Farias (2005); Conceptions of child development: Oliveira (1992.1999); Vigotsky (2001) and Leontiev (2001); Care / education: Kramer (2005), Didonet (2011); Boff (1999), Azevedo (2013); Joke and Interactions: Corsino (2009), Borba (2009), Moura (2009), Oliveira (2011), Moyles (2002), Rabbit and Pedrosa (1995), Cruz and Santos (2006); Sarmento (2002, 2003, 2005 , 2009), which also deals with conceptions of childhood and interactions; Professional Identity: Dubar (1997), Ciampa (1994) and Teacher Training, Garcia (1999), Nóvoa (1992, 1995, 1999), Oliveira (2001), Kramer (2005), Willow (2009) and Gomes (2009) .Das interviews and observations revealed three axes of analysis dealing with the following points: personal and professional life of teachers and the establishment of the identity of the same; Conceptions about childhood care / education and on the play and interactions. The results show the following evidence: the identity of teachers is becoming an every day, the intersection of the personal and professional dimensions, due to their lived experiences and continuing education. About play and interactions became explicit in the narrative that teachers conceive them as important elements in the development of children of nursery and this fact is evident when they speak with an emphasis on these two aspects, revealing that seek to prioritize these actions in pedagogical practices. With regard to the care / education, the narratives suggest that when teachers started teaching in the nursery, only brought expertise on working with children from 2:03 years, too, brought only their personal experiences of caring through of experiences with children or with other children of the contexts from which they were inserted. Because they are in a continuous process of professional development, the concepts and practices on the care / education, are also constituting themselves. About this constitution, we can infer that in some lines, they understand it is a unique aspect of their teaching actions in the nursery, which points to a conception of binomial. However, some lines refer to an understanding that reflects, at certain times, disregard the aspect of care as teaching, which reveals a dichotomous conception between care and education. So narratives have some conflict in relation to the concepts and practices, however, this conflict is justified when we consider that the social function of the nursery has a whole historical constitution. Also, the little time that daycare centers are linked to education, is expressed in the concepts and practices narrated by teachers. Accordingly, we find that even in the face of conflicts of professionals, their data show progress in bringing concepts, showing different from those that supported the service that small children were, where they were present, basically, the welfare and philanthropic aspects and institutions were seen as a place of custody and their professional caregivers.
