Social art practices as feminist manifestos : radical hospitality in the archive

The research presents a practice-based examination of the politics and poetics of the manifesto form, drawing on feminist theoretical writing and activism alongside contemporary iterations of socially engaged art. It offers feminist manifestos as a lens through which to reconsider the form and intentions of socially engaged art, which is reframed in the light of these feminist insights as social art practice (Ross, 2000). To draw feminism alongside social art practice the research occupies the metaphorical territory of the manifesto in order to open up a dialogue with, and directly experience, unfolding forms of social art practice. The thesis is structured in the form of an archive, consisting of three distinct but interrelated concepts – the manifesto, hospitality and archives. This structure sets out to highlight the relational and political nature of archives suggesting their potential to be reimagined as manifesto forms. In addition the structure reveals how both manifesto and archive function as explicit, politically radical forms of hospitality. These topics are discretely contained in physical form within three archival boxes, one for each concept, and in an online audio archive ‘giving voice’ to each of the concepts. Taken as a whole the thesis articulates a missing feminist history within current critical discourse around social art practice -­ despite the early presence of important feminist artists like Lacy and Ukeles. This research explores the implications of this absence, seeking to acknowledge the effects it could have not only on feminism as a political and intellectual practice but on the criticality and depth of social art practice. It is possible to encounter the archive as a cartography that can be laid out, navigated and read in any order. This movement between forms of knowledge mirrors the subjects it approaches which are conceived as interstitial forms, negotiating multiple perspectives to produce active subjectivity. Each section juxtaposes knowledge about practice, engaging with history to search for precedents, and knowledge with practice as a generative method, curating events and producing written contributions. Moving between these two methodologies the research sets out to find an appropriate voice to articulate the complexities of social art practice and its feminist histories.

A poética social de Patativa do Assaré / The Social Poetic of Patativa do Assaré

O propósito do presente trabalho é apresentar uma leitura de seis poemas do poeta sertanejo Patativa do Assaré, partindo de um estudo de sua dicção social, tendo em vista a recorrência de elementos de denúncia e de contestação em seus versos. Sendo agricultor no interior do Ceará, o poeta observou e vivenciou a dramática realidade da região nordestina, reconhecendo-se, dessa forma, como porta-voz de seu povo. Com sua visão de um mundo solidário e justo, o poeta documenta o sofrimento e a precariedade das condições de vida dos sertanejos. O grau de consciência que se esconde por trás de sua posição, muitas vezes considerada como rústica ou atrasada, é notável em versos nos quais o poeta aponta a ausência do Estado como principal responsável pelo atraso no sertão, diferentemente da grande mídia que estigmatiza a região em virtude de fatores climáticos, notadamente, a seca. Patativa do Assaré ressalta a perversa relação entre privilégio e privação como condição fomentadora do desequilíbrio e da desigualdade. Logo, a sua poética é marcada por um claro eixo antagônico, no qual a temática social se configura segundo oposições de classes. Com base em tal premissa, propomos uma análise do relevante caráter social da poesia crítica de Patativa do Assaré, ainda pouco debatida nos meios acadêmicos. / The purpose of this dissertation is to present an interpretation of six poems from the Brazilian Countryside\'s poet Patativa do Assaré, starting from a study his social expression, bearing in mind the occuring complaint and contestation elements in his verses. Being a farmer from the countrysde of Ceará, the poet observed and lived the harsh reality of Northeast of Brazil, recognizing himself, this way, as a spokesperson of his own people. Having this view of a solidary and fair world, the poet documents the suffering and substandard life conditions of the people of Northeast. The degree of conscience that is hidden behind his position, many times considered as rustic or obsolete, is clear in verses in which the poet points out the lack of the government as the main responsible for the lack of progress in Ceará\'s countryside, differently from the mainstream media that stigmatises the region due to weather factors, clearly, the drought. Patativa do Assaré highlights the perverse relation between privilege and deprivation as a factor that triggers the imbalance and inequality. Thus, his poetic is determined by a clear antagonic pillar, in which the social issues are configured according to the social classes opposition. Based on this premise, it is proposed an analysis of the relevent social character of the critical poetry of Patativa do Assaré, still not very discussed in the Academy.

A partir de 1950, passou a manifestar uma nova característica, de engajamento social e político, expressa em projetos sociais budistas que surgiram em diferentes continentes e países. Essa nova configuração, entretanto, ainda se baliza em conteúdos típicos da tradição milenar asiática, tais como a meditação, a não-violência, a compaixão, a não-identidade e a ênfase na vida humana preciosa e na interdependência. Tais concepções entraram em contato com a cultura racional e individualista da modernidade ocidental. Nesse contexto, as ações de engajamento, sustentadas em uma teoria social budista própria, interpelaram a percepção sociológica clássica a respeito do budismo, no sentido de constituir uma religião introspectiva, de renúncia contemplativa do mundo. Diante dessas questões, esta tese buscou verificar como a evolução histórica do budismo, em particular o budismo engajado, tem acarretado alterações na natureza dessa religião e como, em contrapartida e dentro de novos termos, o budismo engajado tem preservado e promovido a cultura e os valores budistas no mundo moderno. Em paralelo ao estudo do budismo engajado no mundo e no Brasil, uma pesquisa em instituição budista brasileira, por intermédio da pesquisa participante, buscou caracterizar essas práticas, identificar seus efeitos sobre seu público-alvo e avaliar sua contribuição para as iniciativas de promoção social. Concluiu-se que, a partir dos efeitos da colonização, modernidade e globalização, as instituições budistas vêm manifestando maior envolvimento social. O budismo, caracterizado por Weber como uma religião de renúncia contemplativa do mundo, assumiu uma feição de engajamento no mundo. Os projetos sociais budistas conciliam os elementos gnósticos milenares típicos do budismo com a ação social budista, que seguem as orientações do dharma budista aplicado ao campo social. Esse encontro do gnóstico com o racional pode trazer contribuições e inovações ao campo das ciências sociais aplicadas e também promover a preservação e ampliação do budismo. / Buddhism, one of the world?s great religions, met an expansion to the West since the nineteenth century, while in the East was at risk by a reduction on the number of followers and the ban on its practices by dictatorial regimes installed in the Asian countries during the colonialism and postwar periods. From 1950, it began to manifest a new feature of social and political engagement, expressed in Buddhist social projects that have emerged in different continents and countries. This new configuration, however, is still based in typical ancient Asian tradition, such as meditation, nonviolence, compassion, non-identity and focus on precious human life and interdependence. These concepts came into contact with the rational and individualistic culture of Western modernity. In this context, the actions of engagement, sustained in a Buddhist social theory itself, have approached the classical sociological perception about Buddhism of an introspective, contemplative renunciation of the world religion. Given these issues, this thesis sought to determine how the historical development of Buddhism, particularly the engaged Buddhism, has caused changes in the nature of this religion and how, in new terms, the engaged Buddhism has preserved and promoted, by contrast, culture and Buddhist values in the modern world. In parallel with the study of engaged Buddhism in the world and in Brazil, a research in a Brazilian Buddhist institution, through participant research, sought to characterize these practices, identify their impact on your public and evaluate their contribution to the initiatives of social promotion. It was concluded that, from the effects of colonization, modernity and globalization, the Buddhist institutions are showing greater social involvement. Buddhism, characterized by Weber as a religion of contemplative renunciation of the world, assumed a face of engagement in the world. The Buddhist social projects concile the typical ancient gnostic elements of Buddhism with Buddhist social action, which follow the guidelines of the Buddhist dharma applied to the social field. This meeting of the gnostic with rational may bring contributions and innovations to the field of applied social sciences as well as promote the preservation and expansion of Buddhism.

O presente estudo comparativo aproxima o discurso literário de O Tempo e o Vento, do escritor brasileiro Érico Veríssimo, e Levantado do Chão, do escritor português José Saramago. Observamos em O Tempo e o Vento que as relações humanas são focalizadas e desenvolvidas a partir do modo de vida e das preocupações das personagens proprietárias. Os conflitos existentes expressam o auge e a decadência moral de um estrato da sociedade brasileira e dão lugar a disputas políticas e ideológicas para a manutenção da ordem social vigente. Em Levantado do Chão o modo de vida e as preocupações das personagens são apresentadas ligadas diretamente aos interesses das personagens trabalhadoras do campo. O conflito social constitui o sistema opressor português e a resistência decorrente desafia a ordem. As ações políticas das personagens, no sentido de manter ou resistir à ordem social vigente, podem ser apreciadas a partir de uma longa época histórica integrante do tempo nas narrativas, que salienta a queda da monarquia, os grandes acontecimentos locais, a Primeira Guerra Mundial, a Revolução Russa, a Guerra Civil Espanhola, a Segunda Guerra Mundial e aborda o início e o fim do Estado Novo em ambos os países. Assim, visualizamos os aspectos semelhantes entre as personagens em atividade política e ressaltamos aspectos diferenciadores como classe social, ideal socialista e intensidade de atuação, a fim de acompanharmos a trajetória do engajamento durante o século XX. / The following comparative study approaches the literary speech of the books \"O Tempo e o Vento\", of the Brazilian writer Érico Veríssimo, and \"Levantado do Chão\", of the Portuguese writer José Saramago. We observe in \"O Tempo e o Vento\" that the human relations are focused and developed from the way of life and concerns of the proprietors personages. The existing conflicts express the height and the moral decay of a segment of the Brazilian society and yields to political and ideological disputes for the maintenance of the established social order. In \"Levantado do Chão\" the personages way of life and their concerns are presented directly connected to the interests of the fieldworking personages. The social conflict brings to the present time the constitutive deadlock of the Portuguese oppressing system and the resistance that comes from it defies the establishment. The political actions of the personages, in order to keep or to resist to establishment, can be taken into account from a long historical time which integrates the time in the narratives that brings out the fall of the monarchy, the great local events like the World War I, the Russian Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, World War II and approaches the beginning and the end of the New State in both countries. Thus, we visualize the similar aspects between the personages into political activity and stand out aspects which differentiate them like social class, socialist ideals and intensity of performance. This classification is to follow the trajectory of the political engagement during century XX.

Combining community-engaged research with group model building to address racial disparities in breast cancer mortality and treatment

Although patterns of African American and white women breast cancer incidence and mortality in St. Louis, Missouri is consistent with those seen elsewhere in the United States, rates vary greatly across zip codes within the city of St. Louis. North St. Louis, whose neighborhoods are primarily African American, exhibits rates of breast cancer mortality that are among the highest in the city and higher than the state as a whole. Based on information that up to 50% of women in North St. Louis with a suspicious diagnosis of breast cancer never enter treatment, we conducted three 2-hour group model building sessions with 34 community stakeholders (e.g., breast cancer survivors or family members or caregivers and community support members such as navigators) to identify the reasons why African American women do not begin or delay breast cancer treatment. Participant sessions produced a very rich and dynamic causal loop diagram of the system producing disparities in breast cancer mortality in St. Louis. The diagram includes 8 major subsystems, causal links between system factors, and feedback loops, all of which shed light on treatment delays/initiation. Our work suggests that numerous intersecting factors contribute to not seeking treatment, which in turn may contribute to African American and white disparities in mortality.

This paper aims to investigate the polarization present within the Design Thinking field ofresearch. Starting off from Johansson-Sköldberg et al. (2013), who first identified the distinctionbetween the two discourses Designerly Thinking and Design Thinking in 2010, we constructed a literature review and a framework of analysis based on conception of knowledge and its relationto the advancement of a research field. We claim that root-causes of the polarization derive from different knowledge bases, which then inhibit knowledge exchange as well as production. We conclude the paper by providing a suggestion for a way forward, claiming the applicability ofEngaged Scholarship within the realm of Design Thinking to make the field of research progresscreating relevance for both practitioners and scholars.

<p>The study findings were thematically grouped into three themes including the coordination and partnerships, culture and implementation challenges. Poor coordination and failure of systems in place appeared to characterise the many challenges. Gender inequalities and masculine dominated cultural practices like polygamy and widow inheritance are associated with consequences of ill health among women / including high HIV/AIDS prevalence, early marriage, high teenage pregnancies and high maternal mortality. Although these practices are in favor of men, they hardly protect them from the wrath of poor RH like STDS, HIV/AIDS, stressful big families and vast poverty. Hence, Tanzanian men are also victims of their own behavior.</p>

Exploring the Sources of Enterprise Agility in Software Organizations

Software is one of the core elements that drive the modern economy, with visible use in areas such as personal computing, telecommunications and banking, and background use in areas such as aircraft traffic management, nuclear power generation, and automotive control systems. Organizations that build software are unique in that they span industrial domains, and at their core of what they do is codifying human knowledge. When we talk about software organizations, we think of organizations that work in the three broad areas of shrink wrapped application software, software-intensive systems, or software services.  By shrink wrapped application software, we refer to the software that one can buy in a retail store for use on his or her computer. Software-intensive systems are part of a larger system such as air traffic management, and software services focus on making software work for other organizations. This thesis uses studies of eight software organizations to understand how these organizations are able to identify changes to their environment, and create the required capabilities to meet those changes – in other words, how these organizations gain enterprise agility. To understand enterprise agility, we ask three simple questions, namely how does the organization improve what it currently does? What does the organization do? and Who does the work that the organization chooses to do? By answering each of these questions in the context of software organizations, we identify the three mechanisms of Software Process Improvement (SPI), Creating Systems of Innovation (CSI), and Leveraging Globally Available Capabilities (LGAC). These three mechanisms are interconnected and interdependent. By creating rich descriptions of how these mechanisms are implemented in the organizations that we studied in the thesis, we are able to build confidence that these mechanisms are an accurate representation of the approaches that organizations use. In addition to identifying the mechanisms, by analyzing across the cases, we identify the four organizational enablers of stakeholder alignment, employee empowerment, group &amp; organizational learning, and governance. Organizations can create enterprise agility by ensuring the presence of the four organizational enablers and leveraging some combination of the three mechanisms. While it is possible for the organization to create enterprise agility in the absence of these mechanisms, we believe that the agility generated is not sustainable. To survive in the tough economic conditions of today, software organizations need to be aware of, and actively manage both the enablers and the mechanisms for sustained success. This thesis is a first step in finding more effective ways to manage software organizations as a whole, rather than as a collection of individual projects. It presents a philosophy of thinking about software organizations that addresses the uniqueness of these organizations while at the same time leveraging best practices and thought leadership from the disciplines of software engineering, quality,  knowledge management, strategy, organizational theory, and stakeholder theory.

Communicating collaboration and empowerment: A research novel of relationships with domestic violence workers

This dissertation is an experiment in thinking with the story, not about the story in order to erase the boundaries between analysis and narrative. CASA, Community Action Stops Abuse, is the context for this research on the lived realities and meaning of working with an empowerment philosophy. A University-Community Initiative (UCI) grant with CASA and the University of South Florida is the occasion to study the communicative aspects of individual and collective perceptions of empowerment. The dissertation focuses broadly on two UCI project goals: developing a collaborative relationship and producing a booklet of stories about the work of paid staff and volunteers. The heart of the dissertation is my relationship with the CASA workers and how scholarship and advocacy intersect with a philosophy of reciprocal and compassionate empowerment.
