Hist?ria natural de uma comunidade de serpentes da serra do sudeste do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Pampa ? um importante bioma na por??o subtropical de clima temperado da regi?o neotropical, com forma??es predominantemente abertas, com a presen?a de floresta semidecidual e mata ciliar ao longo dos cursos d ?gua. Apresenta grande relev?ncia quanto a sua biodiversidade, mas ? praticamente desconhecido quanto a composi??o e estrutura de comunidades. O objetivo do presente estudo foi conhecer a diversidade, hist?ria natural e alguns aspectos ecol?gicos das esp?cies de uma comunidade de serpentes da Serra do Sudeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Registrou-se a presen?a das esp?cies de serpentes entre janeiro de 2000 e junho de 2003, com o uso simult?neo de quatro m?todos amostrais: procura visual limitada por tempo (a p? e de carro); armadilhas de intercepta??o e queda; coletores residentes e consulta em cole??es cient?ficas. A ?rea de estudo caracteriza-se pela presen?a de floresta semidecidual e forma??es de campos entremeados por matas ciliares. A riqueza dentro da ?rea de coleta foi igual a 28 esp?cies, outras quatro foram identificadas na cole??o do MCPRS (Museu de Ci?ncias da Pontif?cia Universidade Cat?lica do Rio Grande do Sul), totalizando 32 esp?cies. Os m?todos que apresentaram melhor desempenho em n?mero de esp?cies (riqueza) e indiv?duos (abund?ncia) foram coletores residentes (23/294) e armadilhas de intercepta??o e queda (16/140). A riqueza estimada (Jackknife 1 e 2, Chao 1 e 2) ficou entre 32 e 36 esp?cies. A composi??o das esp?cies de serpentes da Serra do Sudeste apresentou maior similaridade com outras taxocenoses que habitam ?reas com forma??es de campo (pampas), seguido por ?reas abertas com floresta semidecidual e de Mata Atl?ntica. As duas esp?cies mais abundantes foram Bothrops pubescens (21%) (Viperidae) e Philodryas patagoniensis (18%) (Colubridae). A riqueza de esp?cies obtida atrav?s das armadilhas instaladas na mata e no campo foram diferentes: a composi??o da mata apresentou riqueza (n=14), diversidade (H =2,46) e eq?itabilidade (E=79%) maiores que o campo (n=12, H =2,13, E=51%). Serpentes terrestres e diurnas foram as mais frequentemente encontradas. Locais onde houve maior n?mero de encontro com serpentes foram em estradas vicinais (n=60 em deslocamento) e ambientes peri-domiciliares (n=58). A atividade mensal das serpentes est? correlacionada ? temperatura (r2=0.52). As tr?s esp?cies mais abundantes apresentaram h?bito alimentar generalista. Os itens alimentares mais consumidos pelas esp?cies foram anf?bios anuros e lagartos, seguidos por moluscos, artr?podes e aves. A composi??o de esp?cies obedece ao padr?o conhecido e caracter?stico da coloniza??o e dispers?o das linhagens de serpentes que habitam a regi?o neotropical, refletindo assim influ?ncia de fatores hist?ricos, filogen?ticos e ecol?gicos.

Recently, new taxonomic classifications, patterns and processes of speciation, reinterpretation of the evolution of phenotypic traits and evidence of various taxa traditionally regarded as a single species, were inferred by phylogenetic advances. However, only recently the Andean frogs associated with streams have been recognized as a monophyletic unit and grouped in the genus Hyloscirtus. Although there some previous studies on the systematics of Hyloscirtus, the phylogenetic relationships among many of its species still remain unresolved. Therefore here I present five chapters that provide the most important and systematic revision and comprehensive phylogenetic analysis for 29 of the 34 species using a maximum of 6,859 base pairs for four mitochondrial genes and seven nuclear genes from 157 specimens, considering the entire geographical distribution of the genus in the Neotropical Andes and Central America. Using maximum parsimony criterion and implementation of reconstruction of dynamic homology, phylogenetic analysis corroborate the monophyly of Hyloscirtus and recovered as closely related to Aplastodiscus, Bokermannohyla and Hypsiboas. The evolution of some phenotypic characters by in the context of the most parsimonious topology obtained here, show that the evolutionary history is more complex than previously suspected. From revision of 1420 specimens of 136 localities, the results suggest a diversity of species previously unknown to Hyloscirtus of which at least 15 lines are candidates for new species, and nine are formally defined and described from morphology, bioacoustics and molecular evidence. Additionally a new taxonomic rearrangement of the genus is proposed to include a definition of four species groups. The phylogenetic relationships inferred and knowledge generated here for Hyloscirtus open a window for understanding the evolutionary history and diversity of Neotropical tree frog. / A compreens?o das rela??es evolutivas tem aumentado significativamente nos ?ltimos anos para diferentes grupos de anf?bios neotropicais, principalmente baseada em hip?teses filogen?ticas bem suportadas com evid?ncia molecular e morfol?gica. The analysis explores the context of creation of local parties ? liberals and conservatives ? through three ways: the press, the Provincial Assembly and the local political elite. Thus, this study relies on the analysis of various political journals of the period, which were reached the main ideas, projects and policy languages of each party. From the information obtained was developing the profile of the local intellectual elite: the writers. We also observed in this work the analysis of discourses and conflicts that emerge in the Provincial Assembly from 1860 to 1880, addressing the political vocabulary of deputies, and exposure of their proposals facing the political unrest in the Court. Finally, in order to get as much information as possible, an analysis was made of the profile of provincial deputies, focusing on aspects such as education level, academic training, employment and place of birth. The study demonstrated that the province of the Esp?rito Santo has a different demeanor from other provinces when compared to the date of creation of the two major parties in the rest of the Empire. In addition, the province shows after 1860, new political practices and a political vocabulary permeated by new ideas that coming to the province from the new composition of the political and intellectual elite. / Este trabalho tem como objeto principal a din?mica pol?tica da prov?ncia do Esp?rito Santo a partir das transforma??es que emergem ap?s 1860, per?odo em que ocorre uma transforma??o dos grupos pol?ticos pessoais para os verdadeiros partidos pol?ticos de cunho ideol?gico. Internationalising English language education in Thailand: English language program for Thai engineers

This current research study is an outcome of the global expansion of English into the business world, the vigorous growth of the research in the area of English language acquisition as a second language and a global language, as well as of the researcher's passionate ESP teaching experience to university engineering students, and her pro-active engagement with Thai automotive engineers in the multi-national companies. Through investigating the English language learning and working experience of Thai automotive engineers, pictures about their needs on English language communication in the workplace are sketched; through looking into the perspectives of the university teachers and the international engineering professionals, the factors impacting on the needs of those automotive engineers in English language communication have been demonstrated. As a product of this research study, an ESP working syllabus has been designed to showcase the major findings of this stu dy, and to inform the current and future practices in English language learning and teaching for global engineers from the angles of program design. In light of the principles in second language learning and teaching, and of the theoretical framework in Global English, this research study has been designed with a multi-faceted research strategy, which interweaves qualitative and quantitative research paradigms, and consists of questionnaire survey, in-depth interviews and case studies. The data obtained through this research strategy are analyzed through SPSS statistics, content analysis and triangulation. The research participants were recruited from two settings: automotive engineering workplace and technological educational institutions in Thailand. They include: 1) automotive engineers from an automotive-parts manufacturer, 2) foreign engineering professionals who co-work with the engineers from that manufacturing company, and 3) ESP teachers from the two selected technology universities of Thailand. The results from this study indicate that proficiency in English communication has not only become a global passport for Thai automotive engineers, but also for the engineering organisations. It works as a source of power for both employees and employers, if they own it, in entering global automotive business to effectively function and compete, but as a challenge for those who do not possess this asset. It is believed that enhancing their English language proficiency for engineers is a key toward their generic skills building. On the basis of the findings of this study, a 90-hour sample ESP syllabus spread out over a course of three months is developed. It employs an integrated model of syllabus design, having incorporated and balanced learner-centred approach, communicative approach and task-based approach. It combines classroom-based training sessions, self-directed learning and advisory sessions to introduce and strengthen the knowledge and skills and to mentor the engineers grow through the self-directed English learning process. Thus, the objectives of this sample ESP syllabus are to foster Thai engineers as not only proficient English communicators, but also as autonomous English learners. Through this learning process, they could get themselves better prepared for the challenges posed by this ever-changing world, while sowing seeds for nurturing future global leaders in the engineering profession.

In Hanoi alone, there are more than 20 universities and colleges in which English Foreign Language (EFL) is taught in the curriculum. Much has been done to improve the task of teaching and learning ESP. Not much work has been done, however, about ESP teachers, their roles, responsibilities and position in the process of learning and teaching. It is inevitable that the teacher plays a decisive part in English learning and teaching. It is therefore the purpose of this study is to explore and investigate the roles and functions of the ESP teacher. This investigation has been carried out through questionnaire, class observation and interviews with teachers. Factors are identified which make ESP teachers successful and effective. The study concludes by suggesting ways in which ESP teachers training in Vietnam could be improved

Meeting the need for business English in the new Vietnam

As a result of the New Economic Reform in Vietnam, the need for more business people proficient in the English language is constantly growing. This need requires the Hanoi Foreign Trade College, which is officially charged with the training of business people for the whole country, to devise relevant curricula for short courses in Business English. The purpose of this report is to examine some major theoretical and practical issues in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and in syllabus design that can provide course designers at the Hanoi Foreign Trade College with a deeper insight into the problems essential to the development of their work. The report consists of five chapters: (i) Chapter One is the Introduction. It gives the background to the study, pointing to changes in Vietnam and the role of the HFTC in adapting to meet the new need created by these changes. (ii) Chapter Two deals with the methodology employed in the data collection and discusses its findings. (iii) Chapter Three looks at some major theoretical issues in English for Specific Purposes with a view to applying this theory to the practical needs for Business English in Vietnam. (iv) Chapter Four is directly concerned with the planning of the short courses in Business English for Vietnam which are the central focus of this study. An investigation of the English language needs of Vietnamese studying overseas

Vietnam has been sending a lot of people overseas for study and training but the results obtained from overseas study and training are not satisfactory owing to language deficiency. This has prompted the present study which aims to investigate the language problems and language needs of Vietnamese going overseas for study and training. Chapter 1 presents the justification and objectives of this Study Project Report. Chapter 2 gives some insight into the definition of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), its development, and the situation of English language teaching and ESP teaching in Vietnam. Chapter 3 discusses the nature of analysis and its role in ESP course design, types of needs of learners of English, and the methods of collecting information for needs analysis. Chapter 4 examines the noticeable problems of Vietnamese learners of English in overseas settings in terms of difficulties in language, study skills, and cultural differences by carrying out through a survey and a case study. Chapter 5 specifies three kinds of English that Vietnamese in general will needs for study and training in overseas settings: English for survival needs, English for social needs, and English for descipline-specific needs. Finally, some conclusions and recommendations are presented in the last chapter.

Aquest treball s'inscriu en el marc d'un grup de recerca interuniversitari (UAB i UCM), interessat per la docència universitària i liderat pels professors Domènech i Polaino, codirectors d'aquesta tesi. S'hi aborda la satisfacció docent del professorat universitari amb la intenció de ressaltar-ne la importància per a l'educació universitària de qualitat i, en definitiva, per l'excel·lència de la Universitat. Es pensa en un model d'universitat compromesa amb la societat actual a través de la formació de futurs professionals educant-los tant en coneixements, com en valors i actituds. D'altra banda, també s'hi vol ressaltar la satisfacció docent com una alternativa a la gran quantitat de treballs que posen l'èmfasi en el malestar docent. Així, es vol posar de relleu aspectes que són motiu de satisfacció docent i que, per tant, repercuteixen positivament en el benestar i en la salut del professorat. Part del treball està orientat a l'estudi de les propietats psicomètriques de l'Escala de Satisfacció Docent del Professorat (ESP), instrument de mesura dissenyat pels professors Polaino i Domènech. La psicologia humanista és el marc teòric que dóna suport a aquesta tesi, ja que hi encaixa perfectament el model de professor que es desprèn del constructe satisfacció docent base de l'ESP. Aquesta escala pretén ser un instrument d'autoavaluació i a la vegada una eina que faciliti la identificació d'aspectes que poden millorar la pròpia satisfacció docent. Per tal d'estudiar la fiabilitat i la validesa de l'ESP s'ha emprat una mostra de professorat universitari de diverses facultats de la Universidad Complutense de Mardrid (UCM), la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), la Universitat de Barcelona (UB) i la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). De les dades quantitatives i qualitatives aportades per aquests professors, s'ha pogut confirmar la multidimensionalitat del constructe satisfacció docent del qual s'ha partit, s'ha reestructurat la dimensionalitat dels factors en què inicialment s'havien organitzat els ítems de l'ESP i s'han posat de relleu aspectes significatius per a aquest professorat en relació a la seva satisfacció docent no previstos en l'ESP. / Este trabajo se inscribe en el marco de la actividad de un grupo interuniversitario (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona y Universidad Complutense de Madrid) de investigación interesado en la docencia universitaria y dirigido por los profesores Domènech y Polaino, codirectores de esta tesis. En ella se aborda la satisfacción docente del profesorado universitario con la intención de resaltar su importancia en la calidad de la educación universitaria y, en definitiva, en la excelencia de la Universidad. El modelo de referencia es el de una universidad comprometida con la sociedad actual mediante la formación de futuros profesionales, y la educación de éstos en conocimientos y también en valores y actitudes. Por otra parte, también se quiere hacer hincapié en la satisfacción docente como alternativa al gran número de trabajos que destacan el malestar docente. En este sentido, se pretende poner de relieve aspectos que son motivo de satisfacción docente y que, por lo tanto, repercuten positivamente en el bienestar y en la salud del profesorado.Una parte de este trabajo está orientado al estudio de las propiedades psicométricas de la Escala de Satisfacción Docente del Profesorado (ESP), instrumento de medida diseñado por los profesores Polaino y Domènech. La Psicología Humanista constituye el marco teórico en el que se apoya esta tesis puesto que en él encaja perfectamente el modelo de profesor que se desprende del constructo "satisfacción docente", fundamento de la ESP. Esta escala pretende ser un instrumento para la autoevaluación y, a la vez, un recurso que facilite la identificación de aspectos que favorezcan una mejora de la satisfacción docente. Para el estudio de la fiabilidad y de la validez de la ESP, se ha contado con la colaboración de una muestra de profesores universitarios de varias facultades de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPC), la Universidad de Barcelona (UB) y la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC). Los datos cuantitativos y cualitativos aportados por este profesorado han permitido confirmar la multidimensionalidad del constructo "satisfacción docente" del que se ha partido, reestructurar la dimensionalidad de los factores en que inicialmente se habían distribuido los ítemes de la ESP y poner de relieve aspectos significativos para estos profesores relacionados con su satisfacción docente y no contemplados en la ESP. / This work has been conducted within the framework of an interuniversity research group (UAB and UCM), focused on university teaching and led by teachers Domènech and Polaino, co-directors of this thesis. It tackles the issue of teaching satisfaction in university teachers with the aim of highlighting its importance for a high quality university education and, in short, for the excellence of the university. The model of university we have in mind is that of a university committed to the current society through the training of prospective professionals by educating them both in knowledge and in values and attitudes. Besides, teaching satisfaction is also an important factor as an alternative to the large amount of works focusing on teaching distress. This is why we want to show aspects that result in teaching satisfaction and, therefore, have a positive repercussion on the teachers' well-being and health. Part of this work aims at studying the psychometrical properties of the Teaching Satisfaction in Teachers Scale (ESP), a measurement tool designed by teachers Polaino and Domènech. Humanistic Psychology is the theoretical framework that supports this thesis, as the model of teacher resulting from the construct "teaching satisfaction" at the base of ESP fits this theory perfectly well. This scale is intended to be a self-assessment tool, as well as a tool to help us identify aspects that may improve one's own teaching satisfaction. In order to study the reliability and validity of ESP, a sample of university teachers from different Faculties in the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), University of Barcelona (UB), and Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) was used. From the quantitative and qualitative data provided by these teachers, the multi-dimensional nature of the construct "teaching satisfaction" has been confirmed, the dimensionality of the factors according to which the ESP items were initially organised has been restructured, and these teachers pointed at some significant aspects in relation to their teaching satisfaction, which the original ESP did not deal with.
