"I Wouldn't Change Anything": The Everyday Realities of Living with Autism from a Parent's Perspective

Molina, Rudy Modesto, Jr. January 2014 (has links)
Using qualitative methods, this study is about the attitudes and daily practices of parents who genuinely want the best for their children who have been diagnosed with autism. The study examined the everyday realities of living with autism from a parent's perspective. The purpose of this study was to describe the range of specific behaviors, practices, attitudes, and ways of being that families adopt when they engage in the world of autism. Three families were interviewed in these case studies. A content analysis of the interviews identified five thematic clusters that are described and examined in close detail. The five thematic clusters include (1) managing the diagnostic process, (2) child's behavior and educational needs, (3) impact on parent's well-being, (4) impact on the family as a whole, and (5) full integration into mainstream society. These themes were further categorized according to the "challenges" facing the families and the specific "strategies" families used to face these challenges. Parents shared their stories with the researcher with the hopes that their life experiences could be beneficial to other families facing the same challenges as they navigate complex educational, health, and social systems. The research presents a set of recommendations that were embedded in the participants' stories. These recommendations represent advice from the parents in the study to other parents with children diagnosed with autism. Their recommendations are based on what the participants have learned as they raised their own child with autism.

A Jester with Chameleon Faces: Laughter and Comedy in North Korea, 1953-1969

Mironenko, Dmitry 06 June 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of ordinary North Korean people who have persevered in the face of tremendous social, political, and economic trials throughout their country's modern history and a tribute to their unflagging ingenuity and good humor that allowed them to hold onto their humanity. Focusing on the question of agency within the realm of everyday living, my inquiry examines the emergence of a laughing subject during the post-Korean War period and the state's efforts to discipline him through cinema in the succeeding decade. A product of the new Soviet-sponsored cultural policy of the 1950s that promoted social and political satire across the socialist world, the jester became an identity tactically adopted by various individuals, which was responsible for the proliferation of nonconformist practices in North Korea. Using Michel de Certeau's concept of the everyday as a sphere of creative inventiveness, this work describes and analyzes the small acts of "comic disobedience" by means of which the ordinary person has been able to outmaneuver the existing order and create a thriving underground culture of antidiscipline. Spanning a variety of media from print cartoons to live-action cinema to animation, the official response to the jester's challenge, on one hand, sought to create identifiable comic characters and, on the other, effectively demarcate between humor and satire with a view of turning a jarring cacophony of laughing voices into a harmonious chorus of collective mirth serving the state's needs. Based on Bakhtin's notion of heteroglossia, my method of analysis suggests that, despite the government's attempts to eliminate any ambiguity from newly constructed ideological texts, the ordinary individual always finds myriad ways to exercise autonomy through his unending playful subversion of official discourse. By tracing the evolution of this dynamic in the North Korean streets, movie theaters, and film studios over the course of nearly two decades, I argue that the production of formal film comedy was inextricably bound up with the state's desire to interpellate a politically loyal and socially conformist subject and should be seen as part of the larger everyday aesthetic of living that took root within the socialist world. / East Asian Languages and Civilizations

Kemi i förskolans vardag : - En kvalitativ intervjustudie om förskollärares uppfattningar kring att uppmärksamma ämnesområdet kemi i vardagen

Weckéll, Gunilla January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine preschool teachers’ perceptions and experiences of acknowledging the field of chemistry in preschools everyday-life. A qualitative approach was used in which interviews were conducted with 6 preschool teachers at one preschool. All of the preschool teachers had a long experience of working in preschool. The phenomenographic approach is based on categorizing the preschool teachers’ answers, where experiences and personal opinions matter. The result show that the preschool teachers most often associated chemistry in preschool with their own memories of chemistry in school and experienced this as something hard and difficult. Although, a lot of examples where mentioned where the preschool teachers could see chemistry in the preschool on a day-to-day basis, from planned activities to spontaneous questions. The scientific approach and the preschool teacher’ role in this was visualized. Personal interest and a suitable level for the ambitions were noted as a factor for success.

Everyday life in families with a child with ADHD and public health nurses’ conceptions of their role

Larsen Moen, Øyfrid January 2014 (has links)
ADHD is one of the most common behavioral disorders diagnosed in children. These children have difficulties regarding the regulation of emotions, maintaining attention and impulse control, all of which influence family and social life. The aim of this study was to describe and explore the everyday life of families with a child with ADHD and public health nurses’ role in relation to these families. The parents were contending with- and adapting to the parental role and social network. The family attempted to safeguard a functioning family in managing their everyday life, tuning themselves in on the child’s shifting moods, using strict boundaries and developing special skills. The family fought for acceptance and inclusion when interacting with their social network and professionals. Parents with ADHD and families with non-medicated children reported more problems in family functioning. Characteristics in parents and the child with ADHD, as well as support from the social network and community health services, all influenced family functioning. The PHNs described their role as both a peripheral and collaborating partner, asking for guidelines and multidisciplinary collaboration. The public health nurse is in a unique position to support and supervise these families. / Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to describe and explore everyday life in families with a child with ADHD and public health nurses’ role in relation to these families. Methods: An explorative and descriptive design with qualitative and quantitative methods was used. In Study I, data was collected with individual interviews with nine parents, and analyzed using phenomenology. In Study II, the data was collected with individual interviews with 17 family members, and analyzed with phenomenography. In Study III, data was collected with a questionnaire responded by 265 parents, and analyzed with statistics. In Study IV, data was collected with group- and individual interviews with 19 public health nurses, and analyzed with phenomenography.                                                                                                  Main findings: The families’ everyday life was influenced by living in unpredictability, though they were striving for predictability. The experience of being a parent was described as contending and adapting every day, like windsurfing in unpredictable waters (I). The family tried to safeguard a functioning family in managing their everyday life and developing special skills, within the family and the society. They fought for acceptance and inclusion in relation to the social network and professionals (II). Parents’ sense of coherence, children’s behavior, support from social networks and community health services had all an impact on family functioning (III). The PHNs described their role as both a peripheral and a collaborating partner and they asked for guidelines and multidisciplinary collaboration (IV). Conclusions: Everyday life in families with ADHD is both demanding and giving. Acceptance and support from the social network and supervision from the professionals are essential. The public health nurse is in a unique position to support and supervise these families.

Buities ir kultūros dvasia / The spirit of everyday life and culture

Švobaitė, Vika 02 February 2011 (has links)
People look at me like I'm stupid when I say that my child does not speak : A qualitative study of parents' dealing with difficulties in everyday life with children who have autism

Olsson, Emma, Andjic, Tina January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to understand how parents to children with autism handle difficulties in their daily lives. Previous research defines autism and shows how it can affect families but it doesn’t show how families handle autism. We have done eight qualitative interviews with parents to children with autism. The result shows similar forms of difficulties in families which children with autism, even though the degree of difficulties varies. The result furthermore shows that the parent handles these similar difficulties in similar ways. The parents may use a variety of forms of coping. Through coping as a problem-focused strategy the parents deal with the situation by actively prohibiting the child with autisms acting out. In other cases parents might have to deal mentally with a situation which signifies an emotional-focused coping where they passively manage the difficulties everyday life presents. For example, the parents may seek support by a family member who gives the parents alleviation of the burden the parents experiences. In this study the results are finally discussed in relation to the implications for further research and practical social work.

"a äter upp b" : hur gymnasieelever översätter mellanmatematiskt språk, symbolspråk och vardagsspråk

Karlbom, Joni, Norström, Mattias January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how upper secondary school students translate between three mathematical language forms (symbolic language, mathematical language and everyday language). The study used a test (a diagnosis), to investigate this. Upper secondary school students belonging to the same program in three different grades were given the opportunity to take part in the study. The diagnosis was divided into three translation areas: from mathematical language to symbolic language, from symbolic language to mathematical language and finally from symbolic language to everyday language. The result shows that upper secondary school students, regardless of grade, have problems with the translations. Among other things, the students used the wrong operation signs, missed writing crucial parentheses and in some cases, they mixed the various language forms in the same sentence. The students were most successful with the translation from symbolic language to mathematical language, and the vast majority had knowledge of the "less than" - symbol.

Sinister cine-scape: an ostranenie of the everyday through the films of Alfred Hitchcock

Wojnarski, Kelly 04 April 2012 (has links)
Formal education is primarily based upon learning about space through static two-dimensional representations, while landscape architecture responds to the ever-changing spatial and temporal conditions of the material world. The film medium, with its illusion of movement and three-dimensionality, offers an easily accessible antidote to this conundrum. Although cinematic settings are often constructed to promote a particular narrative rather than emulate physical reality, these filmic worlds trigger powerful imagery which overwhelms the lived experience of space. Through the analysis of three seminal films by director Alfred Hitchcock – Rear Window, North by Northwest and The Birds – this project represents an endeavour to deconstruct the haunting filmic atmospheres which transformed my perceptions of three familiar landscapes. Through the use of drawing and composite graphics, I have sought to understand this cinematic ostranenie – or defamiliarization – of the everyday and its underlying creative potential for the realm of landscape architecture.
