Students' Perceptions Of College Technology Programs And Acquired Technology Skills

Students, the nation’s potential workforce, must acquire the needed entry-level technology skills demanded in the work environment. Business leaders question whether students are graduating from technology programs with appropriate and adequate technology skills. The purpose of this study was to determine how two-year and four-year college students assess their college technology programs and how they perceive the adequacy of the technology skills they had acquired in meeting workplace needs. A secondary purpose was to determine if differences existed based on demographic characteristics of participants. A survey research design was used in this study. The survey instrument consisted of three sections: Section I sought demographic information, Section II dealt with students’ perceptions of their technology programs, and Section III of the questionnaire was designed to have students assess their skills related to various computer applications and functions. Major skill areas include Word®, Access®, Excel®, and PowerPoint®. The findings indicated that participants were satisfied with the quality of their technology programs but they expressed some concern with the areas of instructional materials and integrating technology. Four-year college participants agreed that they had acquired the necessary Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access skills. Two-year college participants agreed that they have acquired the necessary Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills but did not express they had acquired the necessary Access skills. Recommendations included: (a) conducting survey research to identify businesses/industries’ technology needs, (b) improving the questionnaire, (c) interviewing faculty members and students for survey research, (d) conducting a pilot study, (e) establishing validity and reliability for the modified questionnaire, and (f) using research design.

Labyrinth Seal Preprocessor and Post-Processor Design and Parametric Study

Vibrations caused due to aerodynamic excitation may cause severe limitation to the performance of turbomachines. The force resulting from the non-uniform pressure distribution within the labyrinth cavity is identified as a major source of this excitation. In order to perform rotor dynamic evaluation of rotor-bearing-seal system, accurate prediction of this force is essential. A visual basic based front-end, for a labyrinth seal analysis program, has been designed herein. In order to accurately predict the excitation force, proper modeling of labyrinth leak path is important. Thus, the front-end developed herein incorporates a leak-path geometric diagram for visual analysis of labyrinth leak path and tooth location. Furthermore, to investigate influence of various operating conditions and gas properties on excitation force (effective cross-coupling stiffness), a parametric study is performed on both the eye seal and the balance piston labyrinth seal. / Master of Science

Excel i redovisningsutbildningar : En studie om svenska lärosäten

Det huvudsakliga målet med redovisning har alltid varit detsamma, att skapa och förse information till interna och externa beslutsfattare. Redovisningsyrket har förändrats i och med digitaliserings intåg. För en redovisningsekonom är det därför av hög relevans att följa med i de tekniska hjälpmedlens utveckling. Studier har visat att denmest efterfrågade kunskapen enredovisningsekonom kan besitta efter erfarenhet är Excel. Tidigare forskning har belyst att nyexaminerades Excelkunskaper inte motsvarar arbetsgivarnas krav. Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att kartlägga vadsvenska lärosäten gör för att tillgodose arbetsgivarnas krav gällande digitalisering i allmänhet och Excel i synnerhet. För att syftet skulle uppnås undersöktes kursplaner för 72 redovisningskurser på 22 lärosäten. Sedan intervjuades 10 kursansvariga på 10 olika lärosäten med hjälp av intervjufrågor som var utformade via Technology Acceptance Model 2. I denna uppsats valdes kvalitativ metod med kvantitativt inslag. Resultatet visade att Excel nämns i 1 av 72 kursplaner men användes på 6 av 10 intervjuade lärosäten i utbildningen. Vidare visade resultatet att arbetsmarknadens krav, arbetsrelavans och utmatningskvalitet var de huvudsakliga variblerna till att lärosätena inkluderar Excel i utbildningen. Uppsatsen bidrar med kunskap om vad som kan vara avgörande för om lärosäten väljer att införa ett tekniskt hjälpmedel eller inte. / The primary goal of accounting havealways been the same, to create and provide information to internal and external decision makers. The accounting profession have undergone change due to digitalization. Therefore it is of utmost importance to follow thedevelopmentof technological tools.Studies have shown that the most demanded qualities in an employee is Excel knowledge after experience. Previous studies have shown that newly graduated students donot meet the employers demand. The purpose of this study is to map what swedish universities do to cater for the Swedish labour market regarding digitalization in general and Excel specifically. In order to achieve the purpose 72 syllabuses in accounting courses were examined at 22 different universities. This was followed by interviews with 10 course coordinators at 10 different universities with questions formulated from Technology Acceptance Model 2. This essay had a qualitative approach in general with quantitative elements. Results show that Excel was mentioned in 1 of the 72 syllabuses examined but used in 6 of the 10 interviewed universities. Further resultspointed that labour markets demands, job relevance and output quality werethe main variables affecting Excel involvement at target universities. This essay contributes with knowledgeon what is decisive for universities when it comes to adopting technological tools or not.

Aplikace data miningu v marketingu / Data Mining Aplications in Marketing

In my work I deal with the issue of data mining and its use in the commercial sphere. Specifically, I focused on marketing and sales forecast. The aim of my work was first to assemble knowledge from data mining and then use it to create sales forecasts using data mining add-on for Excel. In the first part I gather the theoretical information about data mining. I focused on definition, the methodology, algorithms and of course on the most frequent usage. The second part consists of the practical application of acquired knowledge. I focus on making the sales forecast of HERO CZECH company. I used data mining add-on for Microsoft Excel 2007. Results are compared with real forecasts prepared by the Key Account Manager. Results of my work proved that forecasts from data mining add-on for Excel were not more accurately than the existing ones from Key Account Manager. Nevertheless, I believe that the use of data mining methods have found use in preparing the forecast, at least as a means of support.

I en värld full av data är felaktiga eller inkonsekventa data oundvikliga, och datarensning, en process som rensar sådana skillnader, blir avgörande. Syftet med studien är att besvara frågan om vilka kriterier datarengöringsverktyg kan jämföras och utvärderas med. Samt att genomföra en jämförande analys av två datarengöringsverktyg, varav ett utvecklades för ändamålet med denna studie medan det andra tillhandahölls för studien. Analysens resultat bör svara på frågan om vilket av verktygen som är överlägset och i vilka avseenden. De resulterande kriterierna för jämförelse är exekveringstid, mängden RAM (Random Access Memory) och CPU (Central Processing Unit) som används, skalbarhet och användarupplevelse. Genom systematisk testning och utvärdering överträffade det utvecklade verktyget i effektivitetskriterier som tidmätning och skalbarhet, det har också en liten fördel när det gäller resursförbrukning. Men eftersom det tillhandahållna verktyget erbjuder ett GUI (Graphical User Interface) finns det inte ett definitivt svar på vilket verktyg som är överlägset eftersom användarupplevelse och behov kan väga över alla tekniska färdigheter. Således kan slutsatsen om vilket verktyg som är överlägset variera, beroende på användarens specifika behov. / In a world teeming with data, faulty or inconsistent data is inevitable, and data cleansing, a process that purges such discrepancies, becomes crucial. The purpose of the study is to answer the question of what criteria data cleaning tools can be compared and evaluated with. As well as undergoing a comparative analysis of two data cleansing tools, one of which is developed for the purpose of this study whereas the other was provided for the study. The result of the analysis should answer the question of which of the tools is superior and in what regard. The resulting criteria for comparison are execution time, amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) and CPU (Central Processing Unit) usage, scalability and user experience. Through systematic testing and evaluation, the developed tool outperformed in efficiency criteria like time measurement and scalability, it also has a slight edge over on resource consumption. However, because the provided tool offers a GUI (Graphical User Interface), there is no definitive answer as to which tool is superior as user experience and needs can outweigh any technical prowess. Thus, the conclusion as to which tool is superior may vary, depending on the specific needs of the user.

I denna rapport undersöks olika system för hanteringen av forskning och utvecklingsprojekt som Stockholms stad kan använda som en gemensam plattform med syfte att sprida information och kunskap gällande projekt. Målet med rapporten var att hitta en anpassad kravspecifikation som summerade de tre kontorens gemensamma arbetsprocesser. Kravspecifikationen var ett hjälpmedel för att finna och utvärdera olika system som främjar hanteringen av Stockholms stads forskning och utvecklingsprojekt. En kravspecifikation har tagits fram i syfte att informera Stockholms stad om hur ett generellt arbetssätt ser ut bland de olika forskning och utvecklingskontoren. Genom informationsspridning internt pa kontoren kan effektiviteten öka då målkonikter kan undvikas och ett samarbete kan leda till ett bättre resultat. Att lagra informationen kopplade till ett projekt i en relationsdatabas visade sig passa kontoren bäst och skulle kunna möjliggöra vidare anpassning. Ytterligare en aspekt med systemen som utvärderades i rapporten var att de skulle kunna förbättra Stockholms stads kunskapsöverföring. Det kan medföra att innovativa och hållbara ideer sprids i större utsträckning än med kontorens nuvarande hantering av forskning- och utvecklingsprojekt. Resultatet av rapporten var två rekommendationer som togs fram utifrån utvärderingen av de utvalda systemen. Den kortsiktiga lösningen var att använda Excel med delad arbetsbok och den långsiktiga lösningen var att använda SharePoint Server som en gemensam kommunikationsplattform. / The purpose of this report is to find and evaluate different systems that can be used as a central platform for publishing information and knowledge about Stockholms stad's various projects spanning several agencies. The goal of this report was to present a requirement specification which summarize the three chosen agencies common work pattern. The requirement specification was used to find and evaluate the different systems that improves Stockholm's stads management of research and development projects. A requirement specification has been defined to help Stockholms stad to acknowledge a common work pattern for the three agencies presentation of project information. By increasing the dissemination of information internally, the efficiency will increase when goal conflicts are avoided and a formal cooperation can lead to better work results. A relational database was proven to be the best option for the agencies and could allow further development and adjustments to the agencies. One advantage with the systems evaluated in this report is that they could help Stockholms stad's transferal of knowledge. This could result in a wider spread of innovative and sustainable ideas than Stockholms stad's current system for managing research and development projects. The final recommendation from the evaluation of the selected systems gave Stockholms stad two possible solutions. The short-term solution was to use Excel with a shared workbook and the long-term solution was to use SharePoint Server as a common platform for communication.

Soluções que facilitem o acesso e a integração de grandes bases de dados analíticos, desta forma, agregam muito valor a este cenário. Neste trabalho propomos um arcabouço de software que permite com que dados estatísticos sejam eficientemente transformados e representados no formato de triplas RDF. Utilizando como base o DataCube Vocabulary, padrão W3C para o processo de triplificação de informações, a solução proposta facilita a consulta, análise, e reuso dos dados quando no formato RDF. O processo inverso, RDF para Excel, também é suportado, de modo a oferecer uma solução para a integração e consumo de dados RDF a partir de planilha. / [en] Statistical data represent one of the most important sources of information both for humans and organizations alike. However, accessing, querying and correlating statistical data demand a great deal of effort, especially in situations that involve different organizations. Therefore, solutions to facilitate the manipulation and integration of large statistical databases add value to this scenario. In this dissertation we propose a framework that allows statistical data to be efficiently processed and represented as RDF triples. Based on the DataCube Vocabulary, W3C s triplification standard, the proposed solution makes it easy to query, analyze, and reuse statistical data in RDF format. The reverse process, RDF for Excel, is also supported, so as to offer a solution for the integration and use of RDF data in spreadsheets.

Estas novas características condicionam a bacia hidrográfica a um novo regime das variáveis hidrológicas. Desse modo, antecipar o comportamento das variáveis hidrológicas passou a ser o desafio dos planejadores urbanos, pois com a redução de áreas permeáveis o volume que antes infiltrava passa a escoar superficialmente requerendo espaços para ser locado. Com o intuito de locar este acréscimo problemático da vazão as pesquisas em hidráulica e hidrologia passaram a recorrer aos modelos de previsão de vazão. Aos modelos de previsão de vazões somou-se o advento dos programas de geoprocessamento, possibilitando a estruturação de bancos de dados mais detalhados. Assim, este trabalho configurou um banco de dados no ArcMap 9.2 utilizando cartas temáticas confeccionadas no AutoCAD 2000 e planilhas cadastrais sobre o uso e ocupação da terra no Excel 2003 para a sub-bacia hidrográfica do Córrego Sem Nome, localizada no município de Ilha Solteira – SP. Esta bacia hidrográfica tornou-se um caso interessante para estudo, pois além de ser de pequeno porte, área de 3,47 km², em 45 anos deixou de ser rural e passou a ser 100% urbana, sofrendo com intensos processos erosivos. A aplicação do ArcMap 9.2 na determinação dos parâmetros da bacia de drenagem forneceu uma estimativa mais acurada dos coeficiente de runoff, parâmetros da fórmula de Horton e coeficientes de Manning. O Método do Balanço de Massas foi empregado para o cálculo das vazões, a fórmula de Horton para a determinação da infiltração e o método da onda cinética para o cálculo dos tempos de concentração dos trechos a serem analisados. Dessa forma, confeccionou-se um ferramental computacional que possibilitou simulações dos efeitos da urbanização ao longo dos anos... / The urban areas expansion brings significant changes in use and land cover watershed. These new features make the basin to a new system of hydrological variables. Thus, the challenge for urban planners was anticipate the behavior of hydrologic variables because the decrease of permeable areas decreased the volume that infiltrate, increasing runoff, requiring space to be leased. In order to resolve this flood's increase problem researches in hydraulics and hydrology are turning to predictive modeling of flow. Models for forecasting stream flow added to the advent of GIS programs, enabling the structuring more detailed databases. This paper set up a database in ArcMap 9.2 using thematic maps prepared in AutoCAD 2000 and cadastral spreadsheets about the use and land cover in Excel 2003 for the catchment area of the Sem Nome Stream, located in Ilha Solteira- SP, Brazil. This basin has become an interesting case to study, as well as being small, area of 3.47 square kilometers, in 45 years no longer rural and has become 100% urban, suffering from severe erosion. The application of ArcMap 9.2 on watershed parameters determination provides a more accurate estimate of runoff coefficient, of the parameters of the Horton’s formula and of the Manning coefficients. The method of mass balance was used to calculate the flow, the Horton’s formula for determining the infiltration and wave kinetic method for calculating time of concentration of watercourses to be analyzed. Thus, a simulations tool has been concocted turning possible to know the effects of urbanization all over the years, providing the peak flow for each stage of the occupation in the runoff launch. Finally, with the peak flows determined, we evaluated the efficiency of the existing drainage system in the watershed, since it was built along with the city's projected deployment Ilha Solteira – SP, Brazil
