Wideband Digital Filter-and-Sum Beamforming with Simultaneous Correction of Dispersive Cable and Antenna Effects

Optimum filter-and-sum beamforming is useful for array systems that suffer from spatially correlated noise and interference over large bandwidth. The set of finite impulse response (FIR) filter coefficients used to implement the optimum filter-and-sum beamformer are selected to optimize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reduce interference from the certain directions. However, these array systems may also be vulnerable to dispersion caused by physical components such as antennas and cables, especially when the dispersion is unequal between sensors. The unequal responses can be equalized by using FIR filters. Although the problems of optimum-SNR beamforming, interference mitigation, and per-sensor dispersion have previously been individually investigated, their combined effects and strategies for mitigating their combined effects do not seem to have been considered. In this dissertation, combination strategies for optimum filter-and-sum beamforming and sensor dispersion correction are investigated. Our objective is to simultaneously implement optimum filter-and-sum beamforming and per-sensor dispersion correction using a single FIR filter per sensor. A contribution is to reduce overall filter length, possibly also resulting in a significant reduction in implementation complexity, power consumption, and cost. Expressions for optimum filter-and-sum beamforming weights and per-sensor dedispersion filter coefficients are derived. One solution is found via minimax optimization. To assess feasibility, the cost is analyzed in terms of filter length. These designs are considered in the context of LWA1, the first ``station'' of the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) radio telescope, consisting of 512 bowtie-type antennas and operating at frequencies between 10 MHz and 88 MHz. However, this work is applicable to a variety of systems which suffer from non-white spatial noise and directional interference and are vulnerable to sensor dispersion; e.g., sonar arrays, HF/VHF-band riometers, radar arrays, and other radio telescopes. / Ph. PREDETECTION RECORDING TECHNIQUES FOR GPS SIGNALS

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 13-16, 1986 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / Predetection recording of spread-spectrum (SS) signals such as GPS transmissions is a desirable objective for both users and developers of equipment designed to receive such signals. (GPS user-equipment development is a lengthy process during which signal simulators are only partially useful.) Upon playback, GPS signals are used by the same or modified receivers so that acquisition, processing, detection and tracking loops can be altered to optimize the receiver parameters. Development of predetect SS signal recording systems is difficult to achieve in practice. Such systems not only must be of suitable phase linearity to preserve the signal content to be extracted but sometimes must also preserve the exact signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) characteristics of the recorded signals. Existing conventional test equipment is unsuitable for deriving value judgments of the quality of a predetect recording system’s output because the SS signal has a negative SNR. This paper reveals that it is possible to use, for this purpose, tape recorders now available on many test ranges in combination with auxiliary equipment similar to that designed for the U.S. Navy’s TRIDENT Program (recording C/A-code data from in-flight missile translators). The basic techniques are described in some detail to enable potential users to understand the necessary equipment concepts and evaluate the author’s approach in terms of their own applications.

Feasibility of Optimized Bridge Weigh-in-Motion Using Multimetric Responses

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an emerging field in civil engineering in recent years. The main objectives of the SHM are to identify structural integrity issues at early stage and improve the structural safety through measuring and analyzing structural behaviors. Sensing systems for SHM can be used to identify applied vehicle loads for bridge structures. Bridge weigh-in-motion (BWIM) is one type of such vehicle load identification. As a tool to monitor the vehicle weight moving on the bridges, BWIM uses the structural responses induced by moving vehicle on the bridge to back-calculate vehicle information. In this thesis, optimized BWIM systems using multimetric measurements will be investigated. In Chapter 1, the concept and background of BWIM systems will be introduced. The objective of this research will be also demonstrated in this chapter. Chapter 2 is the literature review section. In Chapter 3, the finite element bridge model adopted for this study will be described. In this section, the moving-load time history analysis, sectional properties for bridge members, and other structural parameters of bridge model will be introduced. The methodology of BWIM systems used in this study will be demonstrated in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5, optimized sensor locations for BWIM using normal and shear strain measurements and acceleration measurement will be discussed for the case without measurement noise. In Chapter 6, sensor location optimization for the case considering measurement noises will be investigated. A new acceleration-based BWIM method is proposed in this section. Non-drift displacement reconstruction technique using acceleration measurement and FIR filtering is applied for BWIM. Finally, Chapter 7 is the conclusion part of this thesis.

<p>During test flights SAAB uses the data acquisition system COMET 16. The part of the system that receives the signals from the sensors and converts them is called KSM 15. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a data acquisition module on stacked PC/104 modules with a lower production cost. </p><p>Our work has been divided into one part about analog signal conditioning and a second part with digital filtering and memory management of the sampled data. The analog part, designed of regular components like instrument amplifiers, voltage references, operational amplifiers and multiplexers, adjusts the sensors signal levels for the ADC’s that converts the signals. In the digital part the sampling frequency is decimated by digital FIR filters in several stages down to 16 Hz. All the resulting data is temporarily stored in a SDRAM memory before being recovered by the HL-11 board that handles the communication with the other parts of the COMET system. </p><p>We have made a design proposal that needs some additional work and testing before a prototype can be made. It’s primarily the C code in the digital part that needs further development. </p><p>Our result and conclusions should be a great help in the future when developing a small,cheap data acquisition system.</p>

<p><p>Benchmarking of DSP kernel algorithms was conducted in the thesis on a DSP processor for teaching in the course TESA26 in the department of Electrical Engineering. It includes benchmarking on cycle count and memory usage. The goal of the thesis is to evaluate the quality of a single MAC DSP instruction set and provide suggestions for further improvement in instruction set architecture accordingly. The scope of the thesis is limited to benchmark the processor only based on assembly coding. The quality check of compiler is not included. The method of the benchmarking was proposed by BDTI, Berkeley Design Technology Incorporations, which is the general methodology used in world wide DSP industry.</p><p>Proposals on assembly instruction set improvements include the enhancement of FFT and DCT. The cycle cost of the new FFT benchmark based on the proposal was XX% lower, showing that the proposal was right and qualified. Results also show that the proposal promotes the cycle cost score for matrix computing, especially matrix multiplication. The benchmark results were compared with general scores of single MAC DSP processors offered by BDTI.</p></p>

Discovering unknown equations that describe large data sets using genetic programming techniques

<p>FIR filters are widely used nowadays, with applications from MP3 players, Hi-Fi systems, digital TVs, etc. to communication systems like wireless communication. They are implemented in DSPs and there are several trade-offs that make important to have an exact as possible estimation of the required filter order. </p><p>In order to find a better estimation of the filter order than the existing ones, genetic expression programming (GEP) is used. GEP is a Genetic Algorithm that can be used in function finding. It is implemented in a commercial application which, after the appropriate input file and settings have been provided, performs the evolution of the individuals in the input file so that a good solution is found. The thesis is the first one in this new research line. </p><p>The aim has been not only reaching the desired estimation but also pave the way for further investigations.</p>

Design and analysis of FIR filters based on Matlab

In digital control system, interference, which is mixed in the input signal, has a great influence on the performance of the system. Therefore, processing of input signal has to be done to get useful signal. Finite impulse response (FIR) filter plays an important role in the processing of digital signal. Designing the FIR filter by Matlab can simplify the complicated computation in simulation and improve the performance. By using the methods of window function, frequency sampling and convex optimization techniques, the design of FIR filter has been processed by Matlab. In the view of the designed program of Matlab and I can get the amplitude-frequency characterization. By using the FIR digital filters which have been designed to process the input signal based on the Matlab function, the filtering effect of different digital filters is analyzed by comparing the signal’s amplitude-frequency diagrams which have been generated. The experimental results show that the FIR filters designed in this paper are effective.

A study on the decimation stage of a Δ-Σ ADC with noise-shaping loop between the stages.

The filter complexity in the multi-stage decimation system of a Δ-Σ ADC increases progressively as one moves to higher stages of decimation due to the fact that the input word length of the higher stages also increases progressively. The main motivation for this thesis comes from the idea of investigating a way, to reduce the input word length in the later filter stages of the decimation system which could reduce the filter complexity. To achieve this, we use a noise-shaping loop between the first and later stages so that the input word length for the later stages remains smaller than in the case where we do not use the noise-shaping loop. However, the performance (SNR/ Noise-level) level should remain the same in both cases. This thesis aims at analyzing the implications of using a noise-shaping loop in between the decimation stages of a Δ-Σ ADC and also finding the appropriate decimation filter types that could be used in such a decimation system. This thesis also tries to compare the complexity introduced by using the noise-shaping loop with the reduction achieved in the later decimation stages in terms of the input word length. Filter required in the system will also be optimized using minimax optimization technique.
