Family Social Capital and How it Affects the Family Firm Internationalization Strategy : An empirical study on the influence of family invovlement in family firms

Rönndahl, Christoffer, De Geus, Remmelt January 2022 (has links)
Recently the research on family firm internationalization has begun to consider socioemotional criteria (Debellis, Rondi, Plakoyiannaki, & De Massis, 2021). The effect of family social capital on internationalization strategies has received limited attention in the family business research (Debellis, Rondi, Plakoyiannaki, & De Massis, 2021). There are studies that focus on social capital and what role that has on operations in family firms. There is also a considerable amount of research regarding internationalization aspects connected to family firms (Arregle, et al., 2021). However, studies that try to link internationalization strategy with family social capital are lacking. This paper aims to fill that gap. The purpose of this study is to research how family firms’ social capital affects their internationalization strategy. The research strategy for this study was a multiple case study, using grounded analysis to analyze the empirical findings. The empirical data for this study has been collected through 8 semi-structured interviews with 7 family firms operating on an international level. The findings of this study show that family firms with strong family governance and social capital positively support internationalization strategy initiatives, especially in the relational dimension of family social capital. The cognitive dimension was not directly linked to as many of the themes that emerged from the data analysis as the relational dimension, but still proved to be of significant importance in the development of internationalization strategies.

CEO Succession Influence on Internationalization of Family Businesses : An Interview Study of Internal and External CEO Successors and their Influence on the Internationalization of Family Businesses

Weiß, Annik, Zolleis, Tim January 2024 (has links)
Background: CEO succession is a critical process in organizations, marked by its potential for disruption andstrategic changes. CEO succession can significantly influence corporate strategy, with the CEOwielding considerable power in shaping organizational direction. As part of corporate strategy, internationalization is considered one of the most important future priorities in many familybusinesses. It holds the potential to help those businesses survive in an increasingly competitivebusiness environment while also maintaining the business for generations to come. As the CEOsuccession entrusts a new person with a role that can have a significant influence oninternationalization, the challenge is to ensure that this person not only follows financial goalsin internationalization but also balances non-financial goals. This is because family businessesgenerally attach great importance to SEW, which are non-financial attributes. An influence ofthe CEO successor on internationalization that is not in line with the SEW could therefore beundesirable for the family businesses. Hence, choosing an appropriate CEO becomes crucial. Purpose: This study aims to examine how CEO succession influences the internationalization of familybusinesses. The study intends to contribute to the current literature by investigating theindividual influence of CEO successors on internationalization, offering both theoreticalinsights and practical implications. By identifying the diverse outcomes associated withdifferent succession types, this research intends to support family businesses to better predictand anticipate the consequences of CEO succession and internationalization. Method: The methodology of this study follows an ontological relativism approach, meaning weacknowledge that multiple truths exist. This further aligns with our epistemological stance onsocial constructionism. The basis of our master thesis is built on a qualitative study followingan inductive approach to generate new theories arising from the empirical data collected. Therefore, we conducted an exploratory interview study and analyzed the acquired dataaccording to the Gioia method. The sampling of our interviewees was done purposively byincluding predefined selection criteria. Conclusion: This paper examines how CEO succession in family businesses affects their internationalizationstrategies, considering successors from within the family, internal employees, and externalhires. It was found that all types of successors can influence internationalization, yet withvarying outcomes as a result. Intra-family successors, while not necessarily having a greaterinfluence on the board, often align with family values, leading to continuity in internationalstrategy. Internal employee successors tend to maintain existing strategies, benefiting fromfirm-specific knowledge, while external successors may bring about strategic changes due totheir outside perspectives and lack of familiarity with the family culture. Various factors caneither reverse or strengthen the successors' influence on internationalization.

Leadership in Family Businesses : Leadership Behaviour and their Influences on Socioemotional Wealth Preservation

Derkacz, Tobias Jan, Lundström, Melker January 2024 (has links)
This thesis explores uncharted territory by researching the relationship between leadership behaviours in family businesses and the preservation of socioemotional wealth (SEW). SEW, which encompasses the non-financial aspects that satisfy the emotional needs of family members, is crucial for the longevity and success of family businesses. The study addresses a significant gap in the literature by examining how leadership behaviours shape SEW preservation actions. Using a qualitative multiple-case study approach, the research investigates two cases to understand the antecedents, mechanisms, and outcomes of SEW preservation actions. The findings of this research are significant as they reveal that the perception of past SEW has a profound impact on current leadership behaviours and SEW preservation actions. The study offers valuable theoretical insights into the dynamics of SEW preservation in family businesses. It also provides practical strategies for family business leaders, emphasising the importance of assessing one's past and aligning leadership behaviours with SEW preservation actions. By doing so, leaders can enhance organisational performance and preserve SEW more effectively. These insights not only deepen our understanding of the complex interplay between leadership and SEW preservation in family businesses but also offer strategic guidance for practitioners and family business owners, potentially transforming the way they approach leadership in their businesses.

How does family governance shape corporate philanthropy? Interaction effects between family ownership and management controls

Park, Sang-Bum, Kim, H. 18 November 2020 (has links)
No / We examine the effect of family governance on corporate philanthropy by focusing on the motives of controlling families. We emphasize that controlling families have two different motives, namely, financial and socioemotional motives. On this basis, we argue that the two motives have contrasting effects on corporate philanthropy. Given that family ownership represents the financial motive of family principals, the first hypothesis posits that family ownership is negatively related to corporate philanthropy. Family management increases family visibility and thus encourages controlling families to be concerned with their socioemotional wealth. That is, the higher the visibility of controlling families in the firm, the more likely the overlap will be between family and firm identity. Thus, the second and third hypotheses predict that family involvement in management as a family CEO or director positively moderates the relationship between family ownership and corporate philanthropy. We test our hypotheses using fixed effects panel regression models and the sample of large nonfinancial Korean family firms listed in KOSPI, Korea’s major stock market. Test results support our hypotheses. We find that family firms become reluctant to engage in discretionary wealth transfer to nonfamily stakeholders as family ownership increases. However, this negative effect of family ownership on corporate philanthropy is weakened by family involvement in top management and the board of directors. Our findings reconcile the inconsistent results in the literature on family business and CSR, which is divided into positive and negative perspectives. In this manner, we revisit the assumption of prior research, which often treats family firms as homogeneous and reveals the limitation of a dichotomous approach to family business. We conclude by discussing the implications and theoretical contributions of this study and offering future research directions.

Conflitos em conselhos de empresas familiares: investigação sobre os antecedentes e consequências no processo decisório estratégico / Conflicts in family business board of directors: investigation of the antecedents and consequences in the strategic decision-making process

Karam, Pedro Braga Sotomaior 21 May 2019 (has links)
Conflicts are social phenomena liable to occur in any organizational type; however, they´re more intense (and less understood) in the dynamics of family businesses, due to the unique psychodynamic effects of the interaction between family, management and property. At the same time, conflicts can also be particularly salient in the ambiguous and complex context of boards (the \"black box\" of corporate governance), by the intimate connection with strategic decisions. Intersecting the areas, this study identifies and measures the impact of antecedents and consequences of the cognitive and affective dimensions of intragroup conflicts in the strategic decision-making process (regarding the quality and adoption of strategic decisions), in the particular and favorable context of Brazilian family firms´ boards of directors. Investigating 81 decision-making processes in boards of 81 different family businesses, through survey, it is verified that: i) the percentage of independent directors does not influence the intensity of cognitive disagreements; ii) while boards characterized by high \"trust based on competence\" tend to reduce affective (personal) conflicts, the percentage of family members has an opposite effect, raising them; iii) the quality of strategic decisions is not influenced by the cognitive conflicts, but by the affective facet, presenting negative and significant relation. Theoretical and practical implications, as well as research suggestions, are discussed at the conclusion

Internationalization of Family Firms : The effect of family-specific resourceson internationalization decisions

Vithanage, Radeeka, Oyuntugs, Solongo January 2019 (has links)
Background: Sweden is known for encouraging entrepreneurship where 99.9% of the business organizations are SMEs. Including Sweden, several other countries in the world provide significant importance to family firms, as their contribution is noteworthy to the global economy. Due to numerous reasons such as globalization and growth aspects, FSMEs are forced to gain competitive advantage through international diversification. Internationalization of FSMEs can be influenced by unique characteristics of family firms.Purpose: Internationalization is a process where the decision of internationalization can be affected by several factors including resources. Among unique characteristics of family firms, FSMEs also possess family-specific resources that may influence these decisions. Hence the purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding on which and how family-specific resources influence internationalization decisions.Method: With the use of a single case study method, we gained valuable insight of a Swedish candy manufacturing family firm which engaged in internationalization successfully. The data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, company website, published press interviews, press articles and other databases. Conclusion: Internationalization can be a daunting decision for family firms where availability of resources play a major role. The key family-specific resources that influenced the decision of internationalization of the family firm studied in this thesis were bridging social capital, human capital and governance capital. The remaining capitals may have contributed to the internationalization process. Other than the family-specific resources, factors such as generational change and ability to gain substantial financial support in further influenced their internationalization decisions. These findings likewise confirm the existence of heterogeneity of family firms which makes them unique.

Samspelet mellan familjeföretag och kluster : En studie av Lammhult- och Gnosjöklustret.

Bui, Henrik, Jansson, Niklas, Kanstedt, Anton January 2019 (has links)
Family-owned businesses seems to play a particular role in clusters and therefore the interplay between clusters and family-owned businesses will be examined.   Purpose: To create an understanding for the interplay between family-owned businesses and clusters.   Methodology: To answer the purpose this study was based on unstructured interviews as well as a modified version of an inductive approach. The interviews were completed with four family-owned businesses in the region Lammhult and Gnosjö, as well as with the CEO of Värnamo Näringsliv.   Conclusion: The interplay between family-owned business and cluster does exist. For some businesses, the interplay is stronger than with other. A lot of the interplay depends on if the industry of the family-owned businesses is reflecting the industry of the cluster. Furthermore, the private relations and the local anchoring that the family-owned businesses have in a cluster does contribute to the clusters prosperity and the interplay for all family-owned businesses in the cluster.
