Latter-Day Saint Fathers of Children With Special Needs: A Phenomenological StudyOlson, Michael M. 01 January 1999 (has links) (PDF)
This research, presents a qualitative study of six Latter-day Saint fathers of children with special needs. In-depth interviews were used to examine the demands and resources fathers draw upon in meeting the needs of their child(ren), the application of the conceptual ethic of fathering as generative work and crisis/stress theory, as well as an analysis of how fathers incorporated their religious beliefs, faith, and practices into fathering their special needs children. Narrative accounts are used to illustrate the results. These results are then applied to an integrated conceptual framework and clinical applications are made.

[en] TRANSITION TO PARENTHOOD DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC: PATERNAL EXPERIENCES AND REPERCUSSIONS TO THE CONJUGALITY / [pt] TRANSIÇÃO PARA A PATERNIDADE DURANTE A PANDEMIA DA COVID-19: EXPERIÊNCIAS PATERNAS E REPERCUSSÕES NA CONJUGALIDADEALESSANDRA FURTADO T H LASSEN 07 April 2022 (has links)
As
[en] This paper s general objective is to investigate the experiences of fathers of
small children during the isolation period imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and
the repercussion of this period in conjugality. Considering the couples and family
literature defines the transition period to parenthood as a particularly defying one
to both nuclear and expanded families, and that studies focusing on the fathers
experience are vastly outnumbered by those studying the mother child relationship,
10 subjects of first born children from Rio de Janeiro who are white, heterosexual
and middle class, were interviewed for this paper. The interviews were recorded,
transcribed and submitted to the thematic categorial content analysis method. The
analysis were conducted within the systemic family and couple perspective
articulated with psychoanalytical concepts. The results showed that the social
isolation imposed by the pandemic was perceived as being positive for fatherhood,
as subjects had more time available to interact with their children. In regards to the
couples relationship, the results show that the isolation imposed by the pandemic
was perceived as being an added stress factor to the already difficult period for the
subjects.

Mechanisms and consequences of DNA damage, response and apoptosis in spermatozoa.Laubenthal, Julian January 2011 (has links)
DNA damage in spermatozoa is a crucial contributor to spontaneous abortion, severe
genetic disease in the offspring and infertility. The chromatin of spermatozoa is highly
compacted, transcriptionally and translationally silent, hence lacking DNA damage response
(DDR). DDR foci follow within seconds after a DNA double strand break (DSB) and correlate
to an abortive topoisomerase-IIb activity during spermiogenesis.
When comparing the DSB frequencies at the two most fragile genomic loci (fragile sites
FRA3B, FRA16D) in human and murine spermatozoa with lymphocytes, significantly
increased DSB levels were detected in spermatozoa in both species. This corroborates that
spermatozoa are more prone to DSBs than somatic cells. When comparing the DSB
frequencies at FRA3B/FRA16D in spermatozoa of smokers with non-smokers, two-fold
increases were found, probably caused by cigarette smoke components triggering abortive
topoisomerase-II¿ activity. The phosphorylated DDR proteins H2AX and ATM were
identified in human spermatozoa and murine spermatids using multicolour immunostaining
with laser-scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and Western blots. Based on significantly
increased DDR foci in spermatozoa of smoking men, but lacking DDR foci in response to in
vitro challenge with H2O2, an abortive topoisomerase-IIb activity is the likely cause of DDR
foci in spermatozoa. As DDR foci are susceptible to cigarette smoke, they can potentially be
used as a novel biomarker. When comparing paternal spermatozoa, and lymphocytes as
well as maternal and cord lymphocytes from 39 families for DSBs (via high-throughput
LSCM pH2AX detection) and DNA fragmentation (Comet assay), significant increases were
found in newborns of mothers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke and smoking
fathers. When challenging lymphocytes and spermatozoa to different genotoxicants,
significantly increased DNA damage in newborns compared to adults was found. This
confirms an exceptional vulnerability in newborns, believed to cause increased susceptibly
to disease in later life, including cancer. / European Union¿s 6th Framework project Newborns and

Support systems in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus and the relationship to diabetes-related stress, conflict, and metabolic controlFoarde, Samuel 01 May 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this integrated review of the literature was to explore the effects of social support on diabetes-related stress, conflict, and metabolic control in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Social support was examined in four subgroups: adolescents with T1DM, family caregivers, peers, and teachers. Relevant findings in the literature revealed a significant deficiency of research devoted to adolescent males with diabetes as well as fathers as primary and secondary caregivers. Studies highlighted the importance of fostering autonomy and positive self-image in adolescents with T1DM and described effective interventions to improve diabetes-related stress, reduce disease-related conflict, and improve metabolic control. Findings suggested that nurses caring for adolescents with T1DM and their families should foster positive, open communication, while identifying barriers to problem solving, coping, stress, and optimal glycemic control. Interventions that educate caregivers and peers on how to better communicate and provide support are critical in fostering positive psychological and physiological outcomes in the adolescent with T1DM. The findings of this study may provide guidance in the way that nurses assess, identify, and counsel adolescents with TIDM regarding their disease management and access to support systems.

Writing HIStories – a contribution to the study of parental alienation. : Two fathers´ experiences: Rule #1 – Mum is always right. Rule # 2 – If Mum is ever wrong, see Rule # 1.Roswall, Sophie January 2019 (has links)
Parental alienation is when one parent denigrates the other to turn their children against that parent, often after a separation or divorce. It is well-documented but poorly understood as a form of domestic abuse. This study explores how one Austrian and one Swedish father experience parental alienation in the wake of false allegations of sex abuse, how they perceive their emotional situation after the separation, how their interactions with their children have been affected and what economic impact this has had on their lives. The study concentrates on white, heterosexual, agnostic men. It is based upon in-depth interviews, and analytically framed within the parental alienation theory. The analysis identified several core themes suggesting the need for better education and training on parental alienation, and strategies to enable effective change to public policies and family law.

holiness and other hauntingsArmstrong, Julia Diane 16 May 2023 (has links)
holiness and other hauntings is a poetry collection that seeks to understand other people. Armstrong uses her poems to track herself back through time to her cousins, her parents, her grandparents, her teachers, and friends. Her work explores queerness and Catholicism, family fraught and family found, love and grief and guilt and ghosts. Her poems lean towards music; internal rhyme, assonance and consonance, alliteration, and long strings of rhymed vowels that sit like pearls in the mouth. Her poems beg forgiveness in shouts; she writes as remembrance, as prayer, as missive, as an engine for hope. / Master of Fine Arts / holiness and other hauntings is a poetry collection.
